Verna Mae Zahlout
ZAHLOUT, VERNA MAE, passed away on March 2, 2005, at home with her family in Highland, NY, at age 89. The daughter of David and Emma (Wedel) Schrag, Verna Mae Schrag was born on August 24, 1915, and was raised in Kansas. As both a prolific choral and keyboard music arranger and accomplished pianist and organist, her musicianship encompassed many venues. She was staff pianist for WMBI radio station, she toured as accompanist for the New England Fellowship Trio from 1934 and 1941, and for violinist Alfred Zahlout, whom she married in 1941. Al and Verna's performances were featured regularly on Percy Crawford's "Young People's Church of the Air" national radio broadcasts and at his Pinebrook Conferences in New England. As a performance team, the couple had several syndicated radio and television shows and toured extensively, with Verna later utilizing her skills for the Zahlout family ensemble. She also later held the position of choral arranger, staff pianist and secretary for the Covenant First Presbyterian Church in Cincinnati, OH, between 1967 and 1992. Verna was a great lady whose strong character rendered her incapable of malice, self-pity or vanity. Her modesty, generous and unsuspecting good nature, industriousness, composure in the face of hardship, and her kindly and dignified bearing were qaulities that elicited respect, love and admiration from those who worked with and knew her. Her elegant and classic pianistic style, coupled with the ability to transpose to any key at will, along with her compositional skills, formed the basis for the unique inspirational nature of the Zahlout team performances. For both her musical contributions and her graciousness, Verna Zahlout will long be remembered and revered. Verna Zahlout is survived by four daughters and one son, one sister and two brothers, and two granddaughters. She was predeceased by her husband, two sisters and one brother. Arrangements are by the Sutton Funeral Home of Highland, New York. Services are private. Entombment is at the Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati, OH.

George R. Ruebel

Ruebel, George Richard beloved husband to Violet F. Ruebel (nee Gray) devoted father of James (Connie), Richard, daughter-in-law Diane and Michael, loving grandfather of Matthew (Christy), Jason (Tina), Jeffrey and Steven, loving great-grandfather of Kendall, dear brother of Marian (George) Gosey. Died after a long illness on Friday February 25 2005. He was 82 years old and can be best described as a gracious and kind gentleman with a great sense of humor. George was a native of Cincinnati and a 1940 graduate of Hughes High School, where he played football. After graduating with honors, he attended Yale University, Class of 1944, where he participated in Yale's Varsity Football Team. In 1942, as our country was at war, George enlisted in the Army Air Force, where he was an instructor for 1½ years in advanced single engine fighter planes at Williams Field, Arizona, and was later changed to B-17 bombers. He and his wife Vi were married in Hemet, California in 1943. At the end of the war, George completed his senior year at Yale and after graduation; he joined the family business of S. A. Ruebel & Co. a general construction company that built many roads and other projects in the Cincinnati area, including portions of Interstates 75 and 74. He ran and worked the business from 1946 to 1986 with his brother-in-law, George Gosey, Together; they built one of the largest and most successful construction companies in Cincinnati, dealing with highways and streets, sewer systems, and heavy grading for subdivisions, shopping centers, and other commercial projects. They continued as business partners for 40 years and maintained a life-long friendship. George was an avid golfer and played until he was 80 years old. He and Vi spent their winters in Florida and were residents and golf members of Foxfire Country Club and Bonita Bay Country Club in Naples. In May of 2003, George was inducted into the Finneytown High School Hall of Fame for his dedication and contributions in the 1960s to the community, particularly the Finneytown High School football field, to which he donated his time, energy, and construction equipment. He and the Finneytown Booster Club made it possible to obtain lights and bleachers for the field.
