William H. Groves
William H. Groves, 69, of Spencer, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at his home.
He was born April 29, 1933, at Clio, a son of the late Theodore E. and Gracie Mae Carpenter Groves. He was a retired heavy equipment operator, member of the I.U.O.E. Local 132, Charleston, member of the Blue Grass Riding Club, Spencer, and attended the Spencer Baptist Temple, Spencer.
Survivors include his wife, Opal Cantrell Groves of Spencer; children, David Groves of Gandeeville, Brenda Samples and Sharon Atkinson both of Spencer, Barbara Lesher of Reedy, and Tim Groves of Spencer; two brothers, Earl J. Groves of Blue Creek and Dwight Groves of Rainelle; six sisters, Audrey Beasley of Wheeling, Wilma Mabry of Morehead, KY, Barbara Jones of Elkview, Ora Mae Elmore of Clendenin, Carolyn Daugherty of Elkview and Shirley Stump of Frame; 13 grandchildren, six great grandchildren, two step grandchildren, four step great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul E. Groves and Maywood Groves.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29.
A funeral service will be conducted Wednesday, April 30 at 1 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Basil Hershberger officiating. Burial will be in the Groves Cemetery, Vineyard Ridge.

Virginia Edith “Granny” Lloyd
Virginia Edith “Granny” Lloyd, 76, of Spencer, died Saturday, October 11, 2003, at home.
She was born September 30, 1927, at Grannies Creek, Roane County, a daughter of the late Cecil and Clara Runnion Nichols. She was a retired employee of the Roane General Hospital and a former employee of the Spencer State Hospital. She was a member of the Linden Chapter No. 152, Order of the Eastern Star, Linden and the Zion Hill Baptist Church, Elana.
Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Freeland of Spencer; two sons, Allen Lloyd of Newton and Virgil Lloyd of Spencer; one brother, Harold Nichols of Harmony; six grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Velbert V. Lloyd; one son, Harold Lloyd; one daughter, Joyce Lloyd; two brothers, Paul and Tim Nichols; one sister, Ruth Henry.
A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, October 14 at 11:00 a.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Jack Roberts officiating. Burial will be in the King-Kirkhart Cemetery, Newton.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Monday.

Stephen Allen Martin
Stephen Allen Martin, 49, of Cross Lanes, died Monday, June 16, 2003, at his home from complications of diabetes.
He was born November 8, 1953, a son of the late Ralph D. and Zella Craddock Webb Martin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, Charles Lewis Webb.
Stephen was raised in Spencer. He attended Spencer High School and Glenville State College. He worked with Special Olympics throughout W.Va. and was recognized for his dedication. He was an avid sports enthusiast and spent time playing and watching may kinds of sports.
Also, he was employed by Bob Evans of Cross Lanes and Wal-Mart of Nitro.
Survivors include three sisters and brothers-in-law, Diana and Bill Morrison of Kingwood, TX, Martha and David Cooper of Spencer, Tammy and Marc Roberts of Charleston; one sister-in-law, Adah Webb of Spencer; three nieces, three nephews, one grandniece and one grandnephew.
Friends may call at the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer on Thursday, June 19 from 6-9 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted Friday, June 20 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with the Rev. Randy Whited officiating. Burial will be in the Clover Cemetery, Clover.

Sharon A. Abbott
Sharon A. Abbott, 44, of Amma, died Saturday, June 21, 2003 in CAMC - Memorial Hospital, Charleston.
She was born October 24, 1958 at Spencer, a daughter of the late Oral Ray and Helen Irene Price Carper.
She was an employee of the West Virginia DEP, Waste Management Division, in Charleston. She was a member of the Bethel Baptist Church, Amma, and attended Henry's Fork Baptist Church, Tariff. She was an avid collector of primitive crafts.
Survivors include her husband, Kenneth R. Abbott; a daughter, Erin Raye Abbott at home; a son, Brett Ray Abbott at home; sisters, Karen Lemon of Akron, OH, Angie Abbott of Amma, April Payne of Clendenin; brother, Bob Carper of Orlando, FL.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Billy Ray Carper and Charles Michael Carper.
The funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, June 24 at 1:00 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Michael F. "Mike" King officiating. Burial will be in the Amma Cemetery, Amma. Friends may call at the funeral home Monday from 5-9 p.m.

Ruby Mae Stotts
Ruby Mae Stotts, 81, of Bluefield, formerly of Looneyville, died Saturday, August 22, 2003, in the Bluefield Regional Medical Center, Bluefield, after a brief illness.
She was born August 29, 1921, in Charleston, a daughter of the late Edward Osborne and Eva Mae Mays Ferguson. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Richard Stotts; brother, Edward "Bill" Lee Ferguson; and sister, Beatrice Ruth Ferguson.
She was retired from the West Virginia ABCC. Mrs Stotts formerly served as a member of the Roane County Democrat Committee and was a member of the Epling Chapel Baptist Church, Looneyville.
Survivors include a son, Charles Paul "Chuck" Stotts of Grand Rapids, MI; a grandson, Ian Paul Stotts of Columbus, OH; a sister, Betty L. Macomber of Bluefield.
A funeral service will be conducted Tuesday, August 26 at 1:00 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Robert A. "Bob" Keen officiating. Burial will be in the Spring Hill Cemetery, Charleston. Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Monday.
Either floral tributes or donations, in memory of Mrs. Stotts, to a charity of the donor's choice will be appreciated.

Rhoda Maude Whitlock Moss
Rhoda Maude Whitlock Moss, 81, of Parkersburg, died Wednesday, June 25, 2003, in St. Joseph's Hospital, Parkersburg, after an extended illness.
She was born February 25, 1922 at Carl, Nicholas County, a daughter of the late Perry W. and Orpha Mae Haynes Whitlock. Mrs. Moss retired in 1986, as a social worker for the WV Department of Health and Human Resources. She was a graduate of the Charleston Business College.
She was a member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church, Frozen Camp, where she was active in missions work. Also, she attended the Vienna Baptist Church, Vienna and the Rockport Full Gospel Church, Rockport. She was a member of the Wetzel Chapter No. 27, Order of the Eastern Star, Spencer.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy and Larry Conant of Belleville, Lydia and Roger Crislip of Gandeeville, Margaret L. and Bob Bee of Lansing, MI; three sons and daughters-in-law, Ronald Michael and Sandy Moss of Cypress, TX, Woodrow W. and Debbie Moss, Jr of Walker, Floyd H. and Mary Moss of Ripley; sister, Lura Mae Grose of Walla Walla, WA; two brothers, Leonard Whitlock of Rainelle and Brooks Whitlock of Apple Valley, CA; ten grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Moss, Sr. October 2, 1971; a brother, Alvin Whitlock; a brother and sister, who died during childbirth.
The funeral service will be conducted Monday, June 30 at 1:00 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer with the Rev. Everett Snyder and the Rev. Bob Keen officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Gay. Friends may call at the funeral home from 2-8 p.m. on Sunday, June 29.
Memorial contributions may be made to the W.Va. Chapter Alzheimer's Association, 508-A Columbia Ave., Williamstown, WV 26187.

Phyllis Joanne Cicchetto
Phyllis Joanne Cicchetto, 69, of Spencer, formerly of San Diego, CA, died Sunday, May 4.
She was born December 17, 1933, at Harrietta, MI, a daughter of the late Sidney and Lula Porter Wright. A U.S. Air Force veteran, she was the former business manager for Seaport Village in San Diego, a member of South Western Yacht Club, and the Rhythmaires Off-Broadway Theatrical/Musical Group. She was a member of CSCM (Certified Shopping Center Managers Association), and St. Francis Catholic Church at Sacramento.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Sal Cicchetto; two daughters, Lisa Nazzaro of Spencer, WV and Tara Allmon of San Diego; three sons, Marc and Jay, both of San Diego, and Brent of Manassas, VA; 14 grandchildren; and siblings of Fowlerville, MI.
A memorial service will be held Tuedsay, May 6 at 7:00 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with Rev. Lee "Tom" Cook officiating.
Friends may call at the funeral home at 6:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Nicholson Alan "Pappy" McIntosh
Nicholson Alan "Pappy" McIntosh, 80, of Tariff died May 25, 2003.
Survivors include his wife, Annie Haynes McIntosh; two daughters, Leona Price and Mary Ann Yevuta; two sons, James David and Newman Alan "Rusty" McIntosh; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services will be 11 a.m. today, May 28th, at John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer. Burial will be in the Lynch Cemetery, Arnoldsburg. Visitation will be one hour prior to the services today at the funeral home.

Kenneth U. Randolph
Kenneth U. Randolph, 85, of Washington, WV, formerly of Harmony, WV, died Friday, July 11, 2003 in the Sunbridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Parkersburg.
He was born September 24, 1917 in Roane County, a son of the late James Issac and Edith Daisy Douglas Randolph. He was a farmer and a member of the Mt. Herman Church, Harmony.
Surviving relatives include one sister, Elva Full of Washington, and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter Guy Randolph and Ofa Randolph; four sisters, Anna Whited, Evelyn Randolph, Artie Harris, and Emie Ball.
A funeral service will be conducted Monday, July 14 at 11:00 a.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, WV, with Pastor Sinnette Summers officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Herman Cemetery, Harmony. Friends may call from 2-6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Juanita Lee Hunt
Juanita Lee Hunt, 86, of Walton, died Sunday, October 26, 2003, in the Charleston Area Medical Center, Memorial Hospital, Charleston, after a short illness.
She was born June 24, 1917, at Walton, a daughter of the late Howard Elsworth and Lillie Mae Harper Lee. She was a homemaker and mother. She was a lifelong resident of Roane County. She enjoyed sewing, quilting, and gardening.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Eugene Hunt, whom she married June 1, 1940; children, Doris Harden of Byron, GA, Arlen Hunt of Las Vegas, NV, Carl Hunt of Congress, AZ, Patty Hubbard of Annandale, VA, and Charles Hunt of Byron, GA; sisers, Ruby Brannon of Gandeeville and Violet Weaver of Liberty; brothers, Elmer Lee of Loncoln Park, MI, Carl Lee of Spencer, and Oral Lee of Old Town, FL; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Aaron Lee.
A funeral service will be conducted Friday, October 31 at 11:00 a.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Jerry Board officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Walton.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Thursday.

Johnnie M. Tatterson
Johnnie M. Tatterson, 59, of Spencer, died Friday, April 25, 2003, in the Roane General Hospital, Spencer.
She was born July 23, 1943, in Spencer, a daughter of the late Roma J. and Alice G. Casto Webb. She was a homemaker and attended the Keffer United Methodist Church, Clover.
Survivors include her husband, David S. Tatterson of Spencer; four daughters, Rebecca "Becky" Rexroad of Clay, Sheila Haverty and Brenda McCune both of Spencer; Sarah Smith of Evans; one son, David A. Tatterson of Spencer; two sisters, JoAnn Whiting of Spencer and Nancy Rexroad of Gassaway; three brothers, Roma Webb, Jr. of Akron, IN, Freddie Webb and Henry Webb both of Spencer; six grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by five sisters.
Friends may call at the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, on Saturday, April 26 from 6-8 p.m. A graveside service will be conducted Sunday, April 27 at 2 p.m. in the Clover Cemetery, Clover, with the Rev. Jackie Roberts officiating.

John Delbert Smith
John Delbert Smith, 80, of Alliance, Ohio, formerly of Akron, Ohio, died Sunday, May 18, 2003 in the Akron City Hospital, Akron.
He was born March 26, 1923, at Newton, Roane County, a son of the late James and Bertha Keen Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Rose Carper Smith on the 26th of December 2000; one sister and ten brothers.
Mr. Smith was an Army veteran of World War II and a retired employee of the Goodyear Aerospace Plant in Akron.
Survivors include three sons, Johnny Lee, Ronnie Keith and Roger Neal Smith all of Akron; three daughters, Brenda Kay Davoli of Shinnston, Patricia Ann Crihfield of Akron and Deborah Lynn Webb of Alvarado, Texas; one brother, Homer Smith of Ransonville, N.Y.; 17 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 21 from 5-8 p.m.
A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, May 22 at 11 a.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, W.Va. with the Rev. J. Herbert Smith officiating. Burial will be in the Amma Cemetery, Amma, W.Va.

Gene F. Elmore, Sr.
Gene F. Elmore, Sr., local historian and genealogist, died Friday, May 9, 2003, in Welcome Home Care, Spencer.
He was born August 14, 1910, at Tariff, a son of the late Jacob Ott and Mary Jane Looney Elmore. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son, Gene F. Elmore, Jr.; three brothers, Joseph Otmer, Paul and Earle; one sister, Ula Maxine.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Hunt Elmore, whom he married May 17, 1935; two daughters, Sondra Leigh Reger of Finksburg, MD and Virginia Lynn Vine of Pawleys Island, SC; one sister, Mary Louise Rardon of Indianapolis, IN; five grandchildren and four great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
Mr. Elmore was a 50 year member of the Linden Lodge No. 83 A.F. & A.M., Linden and the Wetzel Chapter No. 27, Order of the Eastern Star, Spencer.
Mr. Elmore was graduated from Spencer High School in 1932 and was a member of the Harmony Boys local singing group. He attended Glenville State College and West Virginia University where he majored in journalism, joined Kappa Delta Psi, and was a member of the marching band and the ROTC.
Mr. Elmore worked with the CCC throughout WV. He took many photographs of this work, which have been combined into a book. He joined the Navy during WW II and trained at the Great Lakes facility. He then served at Corpus Christi, TX, as an artc/3c and attended Houston University. He was a member of the local amateur radio club. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 21, Spencer.
Mr. Elmore was employed as an Internal Revenue Agent from the Charleston-Ripley-Parkersburg region. After his retirement, he worked for a time with Hays and Company, Spencer.
Mr. Elmore has researched many branches of his and his wife's families and has generously shared this information with others throughout the United States. He was also a member of the Roane County Historical Society.
A funeral service will be conducted Monday, May 12 at 2 p.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. J. Herbert Smith and the Rev. Lester Walker officiating. Burial with Masonic graveside rites will be in the Clover Cemetery, Clover. Friends may call at the funeral home on Sunday, May 11 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Roane General Hospital Auxiliary.

Gatha Hill Berry
Gatha Hill Berry, 92, of Walton, WV, died Thursday, October 9, 2003, in the Westwood Medical Center, Bluefield, VA.
She was born March 12, 1911, at Boyd, WV, a daughter of the late Theodore Wallace and Emily Virginia Anderson Hill. She retired as a schoolteacher from Roane and Kanawha Counties in WV. She was a Baptist and had attended the Walton Union Church, Walton.
Survivors include two daughters, Carolyn M. Scott of Bluefield and Marjorie Haymaker of East Bank; five grandchildren, Brian Haymaker of Chico, CA, Melanie Haymaker of Hansford; “Bud” Meyer of Chatham, VA, Eric Meyer of Lawrence, KS, Beth Meyer of Bluefield; and five great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cleo “Bud” Berry; two brothers, Charles and Dennis Hill; five sisters, Maysel Tolley, Docie Whited, Myrtle Harper, Lucy Hunt, and Ora Hannaman; and an infant granddaughter.
A funeral service will be held Monday, October 13 at 11:00 a.m. in the Walton Union Church, Walton, with the Rev. Jerry Board officiating. Burial will be in the Droddy-Canterbury Cemetery, Walton.
Friends may call at the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, WV, from 6-8 p.m. Sunday.

Franklin R. Miller
Franklin R. Miller, 70, of Spencer, WV, died Tuesday, September 16, 2003, at Eldercare of Ripley after a long illness of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
He was born in Spencer, Roane County, on September 12, 1933, to the late Theodore Johnson and Elsie Casto Miller. He served four years in the United States Air Force. He worked 23 years at Kellwood Company and retired from Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home after 17 years. He was a member of the Spencer Church of the Nazarene where he served on the church board as a trustee for many years.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Oeta Truman Miller; one son and daughter-in-law, Gregory K. and Debby Miller of East Lynn, WV; three grandsons, Daryl Kevin, Elliott Ray, and Gregory Seth Miller of Linden; three step grandchildren and two step great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Dolan of Ripley; two brothers, Jack Miller of Spencer and Bill Miller of Parkersburg; mother-in-law, Oma Truman of Left Hand; several brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Garnet Jones and Dorothy West; a twin brother, Johnny Miller; five half sisters and three half brothers.
Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 18, at 11:00 a.m. in the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, with the Rev. Tim Bess officiating. Burial will be in the Spencer Memorial Cemetery, Spencer, WV. Friends may call from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
