Thelma Marie Deibel
Thelma Marie Deibel, 83, Walker, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at the North Country Hospital in Bemidji.
Thelma Marie Deibel was born on February 3, 1916 in Palmyra, Nebraska, daughter of the late Wilbert and Julie Mary (Hart) Deibel. She moved with her family to a small farm southwest of Walker and attended the Walker Public School System. Thelma helped on the farm and then worked at Ah Gwah Ching for several years, retiring in 1975.
She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Walker, where she was very active, teaching Sunday School and working in the nursery. She enjoyed visiting with friends, relatives, and growing flowers.
She is survived by her sister, Beulah Hendricks of Walker; a nephew, Wilbert Hendricks of Pine River; two grand nieces, eight cousins and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbert in 1939 and Julia in 1964.
Funeral services were held Thursday, April 22, 1999 at the Assembly of God Church in Walker with Pastor Steve Snead officiating with burial in the Evergreen Cemetery of Walker.
Arrangements were with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.

Mary M. Doerfler
Funeral services for Mary M. Doerfler, 90, were held Saturday, April 17, 1999, at Church of the Assumption in Richfield.
A former Crosslake resident, she died April 14, 1999 at St. Mary's Nursing Home and Hospice in St.Paul.
She will be remembered by many for the years she chartered buses to the Shrine at Neceda, WI.
She was the oldest of Charles and Agnes Reimer's 14 children.
Survivors include her six children, Richard, Rosalyn Duren, Dorothy Fezler, Donald (Debbie), Joseph (Shirley), and Phillip; 36 grandchildren; 85 great grandchildren; 1 brother and 6 sisters. Preceded in death by her husband, Phillip.
Interment in Assumption Cemetery, Richfield.
The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Mary's Nursing Home, St. Paul and Hospice East.
Memorials preferred to Assumption Church.

Francis Franklin
Francis Eugene Franklin, 83, North Richland Hills, Texas, formerly of Crosslake, died Thursday, April 22, 1999, at Bishop David Center in Hurst, Texas.
He was born March 21, 1916, in Dodge Center to George and Isabelle (Weaver) Franklin. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Crosslake Lutheran Church, Crosslake.
Survivors include a son, Vernon Franklin, North Richland Hills, Texas; two sisters, Irene Moreland, Pine Island, and Zelma Schlief, Virginia, Wis.; and a grandchild.
His wife died in June 1997. A son, Darrel, died in 1971. Two brothers and four sisters also died earlier.
Services were Monday, April 26 at Crosslake Lutheran Church in Crosslake with the Rev. Leonard Anderson officiating with burial in Pinewood Cemetery, Crosslake.
Arrangements were with Koop Funeral Home, Crosby.

J. Willard Johnson
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 am, Saturday, May 1 for J. Willard Johnson, at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pine River.

Alice Newton
Alice Newton, 79, Nisswa, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby.
She was born Feb. 18, 1920, in Bangor, Wis., to Clarence and Amalia (Conrad) Hodge. She married John Newton following the death of her first husband, Harvey Eaglin. She had been a resident of Nisswa for the past 24 years. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, John, Nisswa.
Services were Friday, April 23 at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Nisswa with Pastor Delbert C. Ring officiating.
Arrangements were with Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Nisswa.

Howard W. Paulson
Howard W. Paulson, 81, Pine River, died Wednesday, April 21, 1999, at St. Cloud Hospital.
He was born July 10, 1917, in Stillwater. He was a World War II veteran. He retired from the Minnesota secretary of state office. He was a member of the VFW and Masons.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy; stepchildren, Pat Gallagher, Dennis Bolstad, Lisa (Bolstad) Griess, Bruce Bolstad and Brian Bolstad; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
His first wife, Barbara (Campbell) Paulson, and step-daughter, Lea (Bolstad) Gallagher, died earlier.
Services were Saturday, April 24 at Pine River Baptist Church of Pine River with the Rev. Jim St. Marie officiating. Memorials preferred.
Arrangements were with Northland Funeral Home in Pine River.

Harold L. 'Heavi' Pearson
Harold L. "Heavi" Pearson, 59, Pequot Lakes, died Monday, April 19, 1999, at his home.
He was born Oct. 31, 1939, in Duluth to Leonard O. and Astrid (Anderson) Pearson.
Survivors include his wife, Bev; four daughters, Kim Hemmerich, Nisswa, Wendy Pearson, Pequot Lakes, Sandy Anderson, Ramsen, Iowa, and Kathy Newton, Nisswa; a son, Butch Pearson, Jenkins; seven grandchildren; and his mother, of Duluth.
A daughter, Sheryl, and his father died earlier.
Services were Thursday at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Nisswa with Pastor Frank Milo officiating.

Evelyn E. Premer
Evelyn E. Premer, 84, Lincoln, NE, formerly of Auburn, NE, and Nisswa, died Thursday, Dec. 24, 1998 in Nebraska.
Survivors include three daughters, Marilyn, Anita and Ilene; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Marlin J. "Doc" Premer, died earlier.
Services will be at 10 am, Saturday, May 1, at St. Christopher's Catholic Church in Nisswa with Father George Zeck officiating.
Interment in Greenwood Cemetery of Nisswa.
Arrangements with Nelson-Doran Funeral Home, Nisswa.

Guy Speaker, Jr.
Services for Guy Speaker, Jr., 81, of Minnetonka and a former area summer resident, died Tuesday, April 27, 1999.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel; children, Guy (Skip), Stacey Hakala and husband Robert, Leslie Speaker-Olson and husband Jim, Sheldon Speaker, and Amy Nelson and husband Martin; five grandchildren; sister, Reva Proctor of Saginaw, MI.
Memorial service will be held on Saturday, May 1, at 2:30pm at Mizpah United Church of Christ, 712 5th Ave. N., Hopkins. Private interment.
Memorials preferred to Mizpah Church.

Kyle Patrick Walter
Kyle Patrick Walter, 29, of North Branch, formerly of Crosslake, died on April 21, 1999.
He was born in Minneapolis on June 6, 1969.
He attended Pequot Lakes High School and Hutchinson Vo-Tech and was employed at LaCalhene Inc. in Rush City, MN as a welder.
Kyle was preceded in death by grandparents Elmer and Evelyn Walter and Cecil and Dorothy McDonald; sisters Cathryn and Suzette Walter; aunt, Mary Ann Dosch.
He is survived by a daughter, Ashley Walter; fiancee Mindy McNurlin and son, Justin Murphy; father David and wife Shirley Walter, and mother Carolyn and husband David Carlson; brothers Tim (Cindy) Walter and Jacob Walter; sisters Melissa (Troy Britton) Walter and Beth Walter; and other nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and godparents.
Funeral services were April 23, at St. Gregory's Catholic Church in North Branch, Mn. with burial in the Swanburg Cemetery in Timothy Township near Crosslake.
Arrangements were with the Grandstrand Funeral Home in North Branch, MN.

Etta M. Wolhart
Etta M. Wolhart, 92, Brainerd, died Monday, April 26, 1999, at Woodland Good Samaritan Village.
She was born Dec. 24, 1906, in Lynd to Ray and May (Moore) Robertson. She had been a Brainerd resident since 1934. In the 1920s, she worked as a correspondent for the Winnebago Prairie News. She was a member of Florence Rebekah Lodge, Degree of Honor, Past Noble Grands, and Peppie Prairieites of Pine Point Club.
Survivors include two sons, Wayne Wolhart, East Gull Lake, and Lowell Wolhart, Brainerd, three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Rube, two daughters, Sharon Wolhart and Linda Cummings, and a brother, Lawrence Robertson, died earlier.
Services will be at 10:30 am Thursday, April 29, at First Baptist Church in Baxter with Pastor David Grotzke officiating. Interment in Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
Friends may call at the church one hour before the service.
Arrangements by Nelson-Doran Funeral Home, Brainerd.

Patricia Johnson
Patricia Johnson, 60, Merrifield, died Friday, Sept. 24, 1999, at her residence.
Survivors include her husband, Richard; one son, Craig; a daughter, Cindy Anderson; and five grandchildren, all of Lakeville.
Services will be at a later date.
Arrangements are with Brenny Funeral Chapel, Crosslake.

Lila Phelps
Lila Phelps, 82, of Pequot Lakes, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at her home.
She was born March 31, 1917 in Sacred Heart, MN to Inar and Laura (Knutsen) Listrude.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William Edward Phelps, and her parents.
She is survived by three sons, Edward L. (Sharon) of Pequot Lakes, Charles R. (Brenda) of Tennessee, Robert L. (Jan) of Phoenix, AZ; two daughters, Lorna (Robert) Kevelin of Pine River, Sharon Heitz of Pine River; 14 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren; and a sister Pearl Rassesen of Sacred Heart, MN.
Funeral services are scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 2, 1999, 11 am, at the Northland Funeral Home in Pine River with Rev. Terrill Haddix officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial services will be in Eden Prairie, MN.
Arrangements are by the Northland Funeral Home in Pine River and Pequot Lakes.

Arthur Ray
Arthur Ray, 52, of North Long Lake, rural Brainerd, died September 19, 1999 at his residence.
Arthur Ray was born May 7, 1947 to Arthur and Imogene (Freund) Ray Sr. in Jerseyville, Ill. Arthur volunteered for the United States Marines and served in Vietnam. He received two First Marines Division Presidential Unit Citations, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Presidential Unit Citation with one Bronze Star, Republic Vietnam Muc Gallantry Cross, Republic Vietnam Muc Civil Actions Medal, the National Defense Service Medal.
After his honorable discharge he was united in marriage to Donna Manley on January 30, 1976 in Sarasota, Fla. Arthur was in the concrete and truck leasing business for many years until his retirement. They moved to North Long Lake 1 1/2 years ago. He was a member of St. Alice Catholic Church in Pequot Lakes, a life member of the VFW, the First Marine Division Association and the Australian Vietnam Veterans. Arthur enjoyed fishing and cooking.
Arthur is survived by his wife Donna; son Preston Ray of Brainerd; two daughters, Mary McCarthy of Littleton, Colo. and Jane Ray of Branson, Mo.; two stepsons, Jeff Gullickson of Minneapolis and Joel Gullickson of Minot, N.D.; four stepdaughters, Jill Reynolds of St. Cloud, Jamie Caughey of Bemidji, Jorie Lindner of Breezy Point and Jean Gullickson of Brainerd; his mother Imogene Winegarner of Crosby; brother David Ray of North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, LeRoy.
A Mass of Christian burial was September 24 at St. Alice Catholic Church in Pequot Lakes with Fr. George Zeck officiating. Burial was in the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Camp Ripley. Arrangements were with the Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter.

Elene Mary Shamp
Elene Mary Shamp, age 76, of Pine River, passed away Thursday, Sept. 23, at her home. She was born Sept. 21, 1923 in Brainerd to Glen and Melissa (Siltman) Smith.
She married Archie Paul Shamp Dec. 29, 1943.
She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pine River, a former Welcome Wagon hostess in Pine River, member of the Pine River Legion Auxiliary, former President of the Ladies Aid at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, and a 4-H leader and catechism teacher.
She is survived by her husband, Archie; five daughters, Elizabeth Clodfelder and husband Lynn of Pine River; Isabella Carlson of Pine River, Agnes Farnam and husband Keith of Pine River, Darlene Oseien and husband Ben of Henning, and Patricia Melby and husband Keith of Backus; two sons, Michael Shamp and wife Melanie of Pine River, Archie Shamp Jr. (Skip) and wife Sherrie of Pine River; one sister, Beth Stehr of Pine River; 28 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Her parents, Glen and Melissa Smith, one aunt, Isabella Darrington, one sister, Agnes Whitted, two brothers, Kenneth Smith and Floyd Smith and one grandson, Robert Paul Oseien died earlier.
Services were Monday, Sept. 27, 1999 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Pine River with Father Edward Foster officiating with burial in the Shamp Family Cemtery of Pine River.
Northland Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Mahlon P. Swentkofske
Mahlon P. Swentkofske, 92, of Remer died September 21, 1999 at the Leisure Hills Health Care Center in Grand Rapids, Minn.
He was born September 20, 1907 in Superior, Wisc. to Fred and Jessie (Rowe) Swentkofske. He moved with his parents to Lake Nebagamon, Wisc. He attended school there until the age of nine when he moved with his parents to Remer, where he graduated from Remer High School in 1925. He attended the University of Minnesota for three years and later worked for Standard Oil Company. He was united in marriage to Opal Vanesse in 1935. He also logged and operated heavy equipment on highway construction until 1953 when he became owner of Royal Chevrolet in Remer until his retirement in 1974.
He was elected to the Cass County Board of Commissioners in 1963 and served as commissioner of the 4th District until 1984. He has since served on various boards and committees throughout his retirement. He was a former mayor of Remer, a member of Northland Lions Club and St. Paul's Catholic Church all of Remer. Preceding him in death was his wife Opal in 1978 and one brother, Claude.
He is survived by two daughters: Paula (Elvin) Joslin of Minneapolis and Nancy (Thomas) Hicks of Remer; three sons John (Jan) Swentkofske of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Raymond (Joy) Swentkofske of San Diego, Calif. and Paul (Maureen) Swentkofske of Remer; 14 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial was September 25 at St. Paul's Catholic Church in Remer. Rev. Fr. Bruce Engen and Rev. Fr. Roland Antus officiated.
Burial was at the Fairview Cemetery in Remer.
Arrangements were by Rowe Funeral Home of Remer.
