Marie Burrell
Marie Frances Burrell, 94, Pequot Lakes, formerly of Crosby, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at Cuyuna Regional Care Center, Crosby.
She was born Aug. 22, 1905, in Oberlangen Beloiu, Germany, to Joseph and Theresa (Petzel) Ullrich. She married Everett Francis Burrell on Oct. 20, 1923, in Boone, Iowa. She was a member of Bible Baptist Church, Crosby.
Survivors include four sons, Richard Burrell, Peachtree City, Ga., Gene Burrell, Golden Valley, Teerry Burrell, Golden Valley, and Wayne Burell, Waite Park; three daughters, Ann Vaux, Pequot Lakes, Loretta Swanson, Swanville, and Wilma Luoma, Saginaw, Mich.; one sister, Lena Roush, Perry, Iowa; 36 grandchildren; 73 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-granchildren.
One daughter, Delores Gay, one brother and two sisters died earlier.
Services were Wednesday, Nov. 17 at Bible Baptist Church, Crosby, with Rev. Gerald Fisher officiating.
Arrangements were with Koop Funeral Home, Crosby.
James H. "Jim" Gilbert
James H. "Jim" Gilbert, 83, of Rice Lake, Wisc. died November 10, 1999 at his home.
Jim was born to William and Susan (Kinler) Gilbert on September 14, 1916 in Pine River, Minn. He spent his childhood and teen years in Pine River, where he attended public schools. After graduating from the Pine River High School he attended the Normal School, taught elementary education for one year, then moved to Wadena, Minn. where he worked with his father in an International Harvester Dealership.
On July 10, 1939 he was married to Carol Peterson at Swanburg. They lived in Wadena where he was employed by the J.C. Penney Co. and was later transferred to Grafton, N.D. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he returned to Grafton where he continued his employment with J.C. Penney Co. Jim then became employed as manager of the Erickson Store in Blooming Prairie, Minn. prior to moving to Rice Lake in 1950 where he continued as manager of the Erickson Store and later Holiday Store until retiring in 1981. Jim was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and the Rice Lake Elk's Lodge.
He is survived by his wife Carol Gilbert of Rice Lake; two sons and daughters-in law Don and Betty Gilbert of Coon Rapids and Bill and Corinna Gilbert of Springboro, Ohio; daughter and son-in law Jan and Bruce Anderson of Appleton, Wisc.; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; sister Jeanne Edwards of Tulsa, Okla.; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by granddaughter Jolene Anderson, his parents and a brother.
Funeral services for Jim Gilbert were November 13 at Bethany Lutheran Church with Rev. Rick Lund officiating.
Stewart T. Hanks
Stewart T. Hanks, 76, Altoona, died Sunday, Nov. 14, 1999, at his home.
He was born in Nebraska City, Neb. He worked as a district manager of sales for Iowa Kemper Insurance Co. He retired in 1985. He had lived in Altoona since December of 1998. He lived in Merrifield during the summer. He was a member of the Elks Lodge for 45 years, the Moose Lodge, and the SAL American Legion Post 255 of Brainerd.
Survivors include his wife, Karen, of Altoona; two sons, Tom, Ontario, Ore., and Dave, Urbandale, Iowa; four stepchildren; three sisters, Betty Donat, Brainerd, Barbara Hanks, Cherokee, Iowa, and Nancy Tillotson, Wayzata; five grandchildren; and three stepgrandchildren.
His first wife, Marcella, died earlier.
Services will be conducted at a later date in Merrifield.
Memorials are preferred to Mercy Hospice, American Legion Post 255 Color Guard, Brainerd, or the American Legion Post 627 Color Guard of Nisswa.
Arrangements were with Altoona Funeral Home.
Katherine L. Powell
Katherine L. Powell, 79, died November 10, 1999 at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri.
She was born on January 6, 1920 in Minneapolis to Henry and Tekla (Johnson) Johnstone. She attended Brainerd High School, graduating in 1937. She married Richard R. Powell on July 3, 1943. After the death of her husband in 1976, she continued to operate the small lake resort on the Whitefish chain of lakes built by her parents in the 1920s, which remains in the family today.
Survivors include three sisters Betty Lawson, Villefrance-de-Conflent, France; Donna Floyd, Scottsdale and Greta Johnston, Scottsdale; seven nephews and one niece.
Her cremation on November 12 will be followed by a private memorial service in the spring of next year at her lake home near Pine River.
Hazel L. Wedell
Hazel L. Wedell, 92, Backus, died October 26, 1999, at Baylor Medical Center in Grapevine, Texas.
She was born August 14, 1907, in Miller, SD, to John and Jessie Keller. She graduated from Miller High School and lived in the Backus area for 50 years.
Survivors include a daughter, Theo Thibado of Homosassa, Florida; 10 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; and dear companion Roy Tilbury.
She was preceded in death by two husbands and a grandson.
Services were held Nov. 11, 1999, at Riverside Cemetery in Monticello with the Rev. Wetterstrom officiating.
Ronald Wold
Ronald Wold, 58, Backus, died Tuesday, Nov. 9, 1999, at his home.
He was born Nov. 26, 1940, in Grantsburg, Wis., to Louis and Lenore Wold.
Survivors include his wife, Marlys; a daughter, Roxanne Schmidt; three sons, Scott Wold, Ken Wold and Wayne Wold; seven grandchildren; and three sisters, Marlys Matthews, Karen Larson and Doreen Gurtler.
Services were Monday, Nov. 15 at Fort Snelling National Cemetery of Minneapolis.
Arrangements were with Northland Funeral Home of Pine River.
Roy K. Blowers
Roy K. Blowers, 92, Crosslake, died April 5, 2000 at his home.
He was born August 6, 1907 in South Haven, Minn. to Frank and Bertha (Crossman) Blowers. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes, and former treasurer for the Ideal Corners school board.
He is survived by four sons, Roy K. (Patricia) Jr. of Danbury, Wisc., Del R. (Marilyn) of Clearbrook and summer resident of Crosslake, Larry K. (Tudy) of Anoka and Michael M. (Carol) of Baxter; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Ida, two brothers Fay and Glen; two sisters Helen and Beatrice.
Services were April 8 at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes with Pastor Frank Milo officiating. Interment
was at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Brainerd.
Arrangements were with Northland Funeral Home of Pequot Lakes.
Marie Buraas
Marie Buraas, 75, Pequot Lakes, died April 6, 2000 at the St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd.
She was born February 16, 1925 in Larimore, N.D. to Otto and Clara (Musolf) Nickel.
Marie was united in marriage to Andor Buraas on October 17, 1948 in Larimore. She was employed at the World of Christmas in Pequot Lakes and was a member of the American Legion Post #49 Auxiliary and a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes.
She is survived by her daughter Clara (Dick) Moore of Mile City, Mont.; seven grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; 11 step-great grandchildren and one step-great great grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her husband and her parents.
Funeral services were at the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes with Pastor Frank Milo officiating. Burial was in the Pequot Lakes City Cemetery.
Memorials are preferred to the Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Pequot Lakes.
Arrangements were with Northland Funeral Home of Pequot Lakes.
Marise Crackel
Marise (Dwire) Crackel, 79, Pine River, died April 7, 2000 at Whispering Pines Good Samaritan Center in Pine River.
She was born February 26, 1921 in Walker to Harry and Florence Staimbrook. She graduated from Backus High School. She went to college in Bemidji and later taught school in Federal Dam.
She married Herman Dwire in 1942. They lived in McKinley Township and farmed there. She worked at Badoura Nursery.
They moved to Pequot Lakes in 1963 and raised dogs and operated a boarding kennel.
Herman died in 1988. She married Herb Crackel in 1991. He died in 1995.
Survivors include daughters Nicole Wenger of Park Rapids and Carmen Swendsen of Pine River; son Roger of Pequot Lakes; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services were held April 11 at First Lutheran Church of Pine River with Pastor Jim St. Marie officiating.
Arrangements were with Kline Funeral Home of Pine River.
Harvey L. Derfler
Harvey L. Derfler, Pequot Lakes, died April 7, 2000 at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd as a result of a heart attack.
He is survived by his wife Regina; son Daniel (Cindy) of Pequot Lakes; daughter Mary (Donald) Snyder of Pequot Lakes; one grandson.
A memorial service will be held at Northland Funeral Home in Pequot Lakes for the immediate family.

Cassius H. 'Mac' McChesney
Cassius H. "Mac" McChesney, 81, Breezy Point and Sun City West, AZ, died April 6, 2000, at Sun City West.
He was born December 4, 1918 in Packwood, Iowa. He was a graduate of the University of Iowa.
He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, Ret.CWO4, Minnesota Army Reserve. He received the Bronze Star and Combat Infantry Badge. He was a member of American Legion Post 428 in Waite Park, VFW #4847 in St. Cloud, and life member of BPO Elks Lodge 2251 in Tempe, AZ.
He was a music therapist and director of voluntary services at the Veterans Administration in St. Cloud. He owned Mac's Music Store in St. Cloud.
He and his wife, Jean, bought the fifth unit sold in what is now known as The Lodge at Breezy Point, approximately 35 years ago during the Ginny Simms era.
Mac was the founder of the Breezy Point golf outings held each winter in the Phoenix area.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Ann (Wold); daughters Patricia DeZurik of St. Cloud and Mary L. McChesney-Garcia of Glen-dale, AZ; son, Cassius J. McChesney of Phoenix, AZ; sister, Louise Jones of New Orleans; grand-children, Janet, Alan, and Andrew.
A brother, Raymond McChesney, died earlier.
A memorial service was held April 8, 2000, at Camino Del Sol Chapel in Sun City West.

Denise D. Zapffe
Denise D. Zapffe, 85, long time Gull Lake summer resident, died April 5, 2000, at her daughter's home in Albuquerque, NM.
Denise and her late husband, Carl, were well known lake country residents. Carl was a distinguished scientist who received many awards and honors. He said that his greatest accomplishment was, "winning the hand of my wife, Denise."
A gracious lady, Denise took an active part in the activities around Nisswa. One summer she pumped gas at Martins.
She was born Feb. 28, 1915, in Wilmington, DE, to Alfred and Jessie (Ball) DuPont. She married Carl Zappfe in 1937.
She was a member of Rotary Anns, Nisswa Garden Club, and the Grand Dame Bridge Club.
Survivors include seven daughters, Denise Park of Falls Church, VA, Jessie Zappfe of Mt. Shasta, CA, Carlotta Tutor of Conway, SC, Barbara Vielma of Edinberg, TX, Augusta Benavides of Austin, TX, Elsie Verdeja of Albuquerque, and Christina Anderson of Bozeman, MT; a son, Carl Zappfe of Lake Bluff, IL; 28 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Carl, died in 1994. She also was preceded in death by four grandchildren.
Services were held Sunday, April 9, at Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd. Burial was in Evergreen Cemetery.
