John Lacore, 47
John Kenneth Lacore was born December 15, 1950 at Luverne, Minnesota, the son of Kenneth and Colleen (Kontz) Lacore. He attended St. Anthony's Catholic School in Lismore and graduated from Adrian High School in 1968. He then continued his education at Worthington Junior College and St. Cloud State University. Jack served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. Following his discharge from the Navy he attended the University of Minnesota at Morris and the University of Minnesota at St. Paul, graduating with a degree in soil science.
Jack was united in marriage to Agnes "Aggie" Wagner on September 8, 1973 at Millerville. They lived in Floodwood where they renovated an old farmhouse and buildings. From 1977 to 1980 he was employed by the Soil Conservation Service in Little Falls and Aitkin. While in Aitkin he managed Pro Farm Supply. In 1984 they moved to Arkansas where Jack worked for the Farmer's Home Administration. They moved to Sioux Falls in 1985 and Jack continued working for FmHA in Parkston, South Dakota. Later in 1985 he became employed by the Corps of Engineers in Idaho, where he conducted elk mitigation studies. He then managed a limestone quarry for the Nez Perce Indian Tribe in Idaho. They moved to Golden Valley, North Dakota where Jack was an environmental specialist for the Indian Head Mine in Zap, North Dakota. In 1992 they returned to Aitkin where he was engaged in organic farming on their acreage. He was also an organic farm certification inspector and conducted soil surveys and mappings.
Jack enjoyed reading, playing cards and many outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, camping and gardening.
Jack died Wednesday, January 14, 1998 near St. Cloud having attained the age of 47.
He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth P. Lacore in 1994.
Those grateful for having shared his life are: his wife, Aggie, Aitkin; his mother, Colleen Lacore, Sioux Falls, SD; one brother, Kevin and his wife Sheri, Denver, CO; four sisters: Jeanne Obele and husband Bob, and Ann Marie Sehr and her husband, Richard all of Sioux Falls, SD; Lisa A. Waldkirch and her husband, Mark, Winchester, KY, and Shannon Lacore, Mankato; 25 nieces and nephews; and five great nieces and nephews.
Christian Memorial Mass was held on Monday, January 19, 1998 at 10 a.m. at the Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with Monsignor James Andraschko and Father David Krogman officiating.
Special music was provided by Barb Evans, Carol Nasser and Susie Rallis.
Pallbearers were his nephews. Interment was in St. Anthony's West Catholic Church in Lismore. Graveside services were conducted by servicemen of the VFW and American Legion.
Arrangements were with the Heritage Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Dorothy Eilers, 85
A funeral service For Dorothy Eilers was held Monday, January 19, 1998 at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Alexandria, Minnesota. Pastor Dan Christ officiated and Kim Byrne served as soloist and pianist.
Honorary pallbearers were Curt and Lila Drager, Herb and Anice Beseman, Lowell Drager and Kayla Sobiech. Interment will be at the Springbrook Cemetery in Swanville.
Dorothy was born to Daniel and Clara (Edden) Campbell on June 5, 1912 on her grandparents' homestead in Culdrum Township near Little Falls. She attended a neighborhood country school through grade 8. Upon graduation she devoted her time to caring for her elderly parents.
Dorothy was married to Emmett Eilers on October 2, 1940 and together continued farming the original Campbell homestead until their retirement. At that time Dorothy assumed a part-time position at the Swanville post office in Morrison County.
Dorothy especially loved spending time with her grandchildren and traveling the country, both with her children and brothers and sisters. The family shared many years of happy memories with Dorothy from family gatherings at the home place. She enjoyed camping and fishing at Lake Winnebigoshish and tending to her garden and yard. She remained on the Century Farm until the fall of 1995 when she moved to Bethel Manor in Alexandria. At the time of her death on January 17, 1998 she was a resident of Bethany Home.
Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Emmett; and brother Howard Campbell.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Terry and wife Pauline Eilers; daughter, Clarice and husband Gerald Getz, all of Alexandria; a brother Leland and wife Vollie Campbell of St. Cloud; two sisters: Mabel Drager of Swanville; Evelyn Christle of St. Cloud; sister-in-law, Iris Campbell of Sauk Centre; four grandchildren: Amber Getz and Jason Eilers both of Alexandria; Coreen Schoep of Montevideo and Taryn Gease of Coon Rapids; and two great grandchildren, Danielle and Colton Schoep.
Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.

Robert Gylsen, 20
Robert Shawn Gylsen was born June 12, 1977 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria, Minnesota, the son of Gary and Susan (Peterson) Gylsen. Bobby lived his very earliest years in Anchorage, Alaska and then moved to the Alexandria area with his parents and brother Jason.
Rob attended Central Junior High School and Jefferson Senior High School in Alexandria. After turning 18 he was employed at various jobs in the area including packaging and custodial work and as a machinist.
His hobbies included target shooting, painting, snowboarding, swimming and listening to music. Spending time with his friends and family was special to him.
Rob died January 18, 1998 at the age of 20. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Lawrence and Doris Gylsen.
Surviving him are his mother Susan (Mrs. Steve) Anderson of Farwell; father, Gary Gylsen of Alexandria; brother, Jason Gylsen of Carlos; grandfather, Dean Peterson of Alexandria and grandmother Arlou (Mrs. Marlin) Mjoen of Alexandria.
Funeral services were held at the Anderson Funeral Home on January 22, 1998 with Reverend Allen Travaille officiating. Vocal soloist was Shelli Johnson.
Serving as pallbearers were Chad Iverson, LeRoy Gylsen, Jason Gylsen Doug Hines, Darrin Hanson and Shawn Peterson. Interment was in Rose City Cemetery at Holmes City.
Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.

Claire Hammer, 64
The time has come to say good-bye. My heart finally gave out on December 23, 1997. Please don't miss me too much, it was a good life. Claire Irene Bartholomew Hammer was born to wonderful parents, Earl Willis Bartholomew and Florence Margreta Nightingale Shaver on December 11, 1933 in Alexandria, Minnesota. I grew up surrounded by my loving brothers, Ralph, Earl and Johnny Bartholomew, and my sweet sisters, Peggy Jalbert, Jean Keller, Betty Lohse and Delicia Dixon.
I'm finally reunited with the love of my life, DeVon. We were married for time and eternity on July 15, 1952 in the Idaho Falls Temple. He left to prepare the way on December 24, 1984. I have missed him greatly. We were blessed with six angelic children, DeVon (Julie) Hammer, Jeff (Debbie) Hammer, Nathan (Joan) Hammer, DeLicia (Dean) Leach, Julia (Dan) Francom, and Carrie (Kelly) Gill. I have also been blessed with 19 beautiful grandchildren and one precious great grandchild.
I am so happy to finally again be with my loving parents, my special grandson David Israel Hammer and my sweet friend Melva Nelson.
My membership in the LDS Church has always meant a great deal to me. I have held many wonderful positions such as primary teacher, young women's leader, ward librarian, and visiting teacher. I've relied so much on my strong testimony and have been so grateful for the gospel.
If you remember me for anything, let it be my sense of humor and love of children. As a school cook in the Box Elder School District for many years I have enjoyed the association of many friends and all the wonderful children.
Let's get together one last time. My funeral services will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Brigham City 18th LDS Ward Chapel.

Ann Taylor, 54
Ann Marie S. Taylor, 54, died at her home in Widefield, Colorado on January 9, 1998. She was a teacher's assistant at the S.A. Wilson School in Security for 14 years.
Ann Marie was born on August 25, 1943 in Glenwood, Minnesota to Lillian and the late Leonard Moen. She graduated from Glenwood High School in 1961. On February 17, 1962 she married Fred E. Taylor in the United Methodist Church in Villard. After their marriage they lived in Minneapolis for several years and later moved to Widefield, Colorado, where they have lived for the past 25 years.
She is survived by her husband, Fred of Widefield; a son, Fred D. and wife Jennifer of Colorado Springs; three daughters, Dawn Deutsch and husband John D. of Mountain Home, Idaho, Kelly Daughtery of Colorado Springs and Brigette Bellow and husband Jerald of Security; five grandchildren, Brandy and Dakota Deutsch, and Brittany, Brianna and Bethany Bellow; mother, Lillian Moen of Glenwood, MN; a brother Curtis Moen of Glenwood, MN; two sisters, Judy Henrich of Morris, MN; and Lou Ann Moen of Glenwood, MN.
She was preceded in death by her father Leonard Moen and three brothers, LeRoy, Bruce and Larry Moen.
Memorial services were held on Wednesday, January 14, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Fountain, Colorado with Reverend Nikki Johnson officiating. Interment followed at Fairview Cemetery in Colorado Springs.
Arrangements were with the Dove-Witt Family Mortuary in Fountain.

Virginia Bergerson, 76
Virginia Ann (Borg) Bergerson, 76, of Alexandria, Minnesota, died on Wednesday, January 21, 1998 at the Community Memorial Home in Osakis, Minnesota.
Virginia was born on July 23, 1921 in Omaha, Nebraska to Wilhelm and Judith (Holm) Borg. She attended Myrtle Creek country school and graduated from Wakefield School in Wakefield, Nebraska in 1937. She was united in marriage to Wilbur Bergerson on November 29, 1941 in Glendale, California where she worked at Lockheed Aircraft as a secretary. They moved to Nebraska in 1953, to Iowa in 1954 and then to a farm near Rose City, Minnesota in 1957 where she worked as a homemaker and farm wife.
She was a member of the Evangelical Covenant Church in Wakefield and an active parishioner of the Rose City Evangelical Free Church of Rose City, where she participated in White Cross, WMS, Sunday School, Bible School, Adventure Club and other activities. She was the leader of the Rose City Rockets 4-H Club for 30 years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, crafts, gardening, and traveling with her husband. She provided many beautiful wedding and birthday cakes for friends and family. She was a loving, caring, giving person to all who knew her.
She will be dearly missed by her husband, Wilbur; her sister Elvera Borg of Concord, Nebraska; her brother Marvin (Lois) Borg of Concord, Nebraska; sons: Gary Bergerson and Steven (Maureen) Bergerson both of Minneapolis; daughters: Debra (James) Mayworm of Lakewood, Colorado; Dieane (Charles) Webb of Miltona; seven grandchildren; four step grandchildren and one great grandson.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brother William Borg.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 24, 1998, 2:30 p.m. at the Rose City Evangelical Free Church of Rose City with Reverend James Brown officiating. Also, funeral services were held on Monday January 26, 1998 at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Wakefield, Nebraska with Reverend Ross Erickson officiating. Interment was at the Wakefield Cemetery.
Pallbearers were James Mayworm, Charles Webb, Terry Borg, Lyle Borg, Mark Borg and Joey Borg.
Services were directed by Petermeier's Alexandria Funeral Home and Bressler and Humlicek Funeral Home.

C. Wayne Carter, 91
On August 13, 1906, a son C. Wayne Carter was born at Gardner, North Dakota to Samuel and Hannah (Wolden) Carter. Following graduation from Gardner High School Wayne attended business college in Fargo and began working for the Manchester Biscuit Company, now known as the Keebler Corporation. He was transferred to Denver, Colorado in 1960 and to Chicago in 1964.
Wayne and Gertrude Moffett were united in marriage on September 16, 1931 in Fargo. They were the parents of three children. Upon retirement in 1971, the couple made their home in Alexandria, Minnesota.
Trudy died August 6, 1996 and Wayne passed away January 20, 1998 at Bethany Home where he had been a resident the past eight months. He was 91 years of age. In addition to his wife, Wayne was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ira; and sister, Edith.
He is survived by a son, Larry Carter of Breckenridge, CO; two daughters: Deanne (Nan) and husband, Gary Folsom of Alexandria; Phyllis and husband David Krogh of Chula Vista, CA; nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
A funeral service was held January 23, 1998 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Alexandria where he was a member. Officiating clergymen were Reverend Lanning Johnson and Reverend Steven Krogh. Audrey Palmquist was the organist and Mary Lou Moll, the vocal soloist.
Interment was in Kinkead Cemetery with Wayne's grandchildren, David Krogh, Steven Krogh, Connie Krogh, Karen Graham, Mark Folsom, Daniel Folsom, Beth Kuhn, Simeon Carter and Arianne Carter serving as pallbearers.
Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.

Esther Daum, 72
Esther E. Daum was born December 20, 1925 at Sandstone, Minnesota, the daughter of Alex and Clara (Arbo) Thorne. Because her parents were unable to care for her, she was adopted by a family in Brunswick. She attended school through the 8th grade and at the age of 16 left home to work in Minneapolis. She worked as a housekeeper and attended trade school to learn factory sewing. In 1946, Esther married Verid Deerring. Following his death in 1947 she continued to make her home in Minneapolis.
Esther was married to Edwin Daum in 1950. The couple lived in Minneapolis where they raised their four children. Edwin died in 1982 and Esther became a resident of Viking Towers in Alexandria in 1990. She lived there as long as her health permitted and then was cared for at St. Williams Nursing Home in Parkers Prairie and Bethany Home, Alexandria.
In addition to caring for her family, Esther enjoyed sewing and gardening. She also liked working on crafts and puzzles.
Esther died at the Douglas County Hospital on January 19, 1998. She was 72 years of age.
Surviving her are her children: Douglas Deerring of Cambridge; Marlys Daum of Minneapolis; Laura (Mrs. Kent) Glover of Alexandria; Donald Daum of Minneapolis; six grandchildren; Hanni and Genna Deerring and Tia, Trent, Kelly and Kory Glover; and a great grandchild, Kaylee Jo Glover.
A memorial service was held at Bethany Home Chapel on January 26, 1998 with Reverend Dan Christ officiating. Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.

Darrel Flaig, 92
Darrel V. Flaig, 92, died at Bethany Home in Alexandria, Minnesota on January 19, 1998. He was born August 18, 1905 in Redwood County, Minnesota, the son of George and Helena (Ryan) Flaig. Following graduation from high school in Springfield, Darrel continued his education at the University of Minnesota, earning his degree in Mortuary Science. He then began employment with the Anderson Funeral Home in Alexandria serving as a caring and well-respected funeral director for 51 years.

Darrel was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, active in the Men's Club and the 3rd and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was also active in community and professional organizations including the Minnesota Funeral Directors Association; the Bethany Home Board; the Golden K's; and the University of Minnesota Alumni Association. He was the recipient of the Service to Mankind Award presented by the Sertoma Club in 1986 and named Outstanding Senior Citizen in 1985. Darrel was inducted into the Older American Hall of Fame in 1991.
Darrel was united in marriage with Adeline Berberich on October 21, 1930. Seven children were born to them.
Surviving him are his wife, Adeline of Alexandria; children: Majel and husband Jack Laimer of Brainerd; Margaret and husband Dick Flynn of Bloomington; Carol Osterberg of Oakland CA; Bob and wife, Anne Flaig of Walnut Creek, CA; Tom and wife, Karen Flaig of Atlanta, GA; Dick and wife, Verleen Flaig of Atlanta, GA; Bill and wife Barbara Flaig of Alexandria; 34 grandchildren; 39 great grandchildren; and sister Mary Leary of Marshall.
Darrel was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers and two sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated January 24, 1997 with Reverend Al Ludwig officiating. Lynn Lynch served as organist and Richard Osterberg was the vocal soloist.
Interment followed in the St. Mary Church Cemetery with Darrel's grandsons: Bill Laimer, Tim Flynn Tom Flynn, Peter Flynn, Michael Osterberg, David Osterberg Dan Osterberg, Bob Flaig, Bryan Flaig, Mike Flaig and Tom Flaig acting as pallbearers.
Honorary pallbearers were Lloyd Johnson, Silas Naas, Carl Roers, Cyril Nelson, Don Hoplin, Nicky Otto, Mike Lanigan, Norb Berberich and Gladys Linser.
Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.

Vivian Halverson, 82
Vivian H. Halverson, 82, of Alexandria, Minnesota and formerly of Kerkhoven, died Thursday at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Funeral services were on Monday, January 26, 1998 at Salem Covenant Church, rural Pennock with Pastor Lloyd Melvie of Salem Covenant and Pastor John DeLancey, Evansville Covenant Church officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Vivian (Anderson) Halverson was born August 11, 1915 in Brandon, the daughter of Emil and Hannah (Peterson) Anderson. In 1928 she moved with her family to the Kerkhoven area where she attended District #15 North, Mamre Township for her education. On October 10, 1936, Vivian was united in marriage to Wallace Halverson at Salem Covenant Parsonage. Following their marriage they lived and farmed in the Kerkhoven area, retiring in 1977 and moving to Alexandria. Wallace preceded her in death on November 7, 1992.
Vivian was baptized at Lake Chippewa Covenant Church in 1915 and confirmed at Salem Covenant Church in 1930 where she remained a member until the time of her death. She was active with the Salem Church Women and Lake Chippewa Church Women. While living in Alexandria she attended Alexandria Covenant Church. She was active with the Young at Heart. She also volunteered at the Knute Nelson Home in Alexandria.
Surviving are her children, Ralph (Jean) Halverson, Kerkhoven; Ardis Kelly, Centuria, Wisconsin; Gene (Judy) Halverson, Sunburg; nine grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and sister, Judith Anderson, Alexandria.
In addition to her husband, Wallace, she was preceded in death by her parents, her twin brother, Vernon and her sister, Evangeline.
Arrangements were with the Harvey Anderson Kerkhoven Funeral Home.

Idella Peterson, 78
Idella Mae Peterson died at St. Cloud Hospital on January 23, 1998.
Idella was born to Erick and Mary (Fritz) Floding on August 22, 1919 in Nelson, Minnesota. She attended Nelson School and graduated from Alexandria High School. She graduated with honors from Rochester Junior College and worked at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. During this time she met and married Bruce Towers. This union produced a daughter and two sons.
In 1954 she returned to Nelson with her family and began 25 years of employment at the Douglas County ASCS office. On August 1, 1958 Idella was united in marriage to Kenneth Wayne Peterson. This union produced one daughter.
She was a member of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Nelson where she served as treasurer for several years and was active in women's activities. She was a member of the Knute Nelson Auxiliary, the Douglas County Hospital Auxiliary and the Osakis VFW Post Auxiliary. Idella contributed 2,900 hours of volunteer service at the Douglas County Hospital Gift Shop. She enjoyed gardening, square dancing, fishing and spending time with her family. She rarely missed a Twins game on television.
Idella is survived by her husband Kenneth, daughters Lynda (Gary) Boster of Minneapolis and Kristin (Brian) Schwartz of Alexandria, sons Michael (Lizabeth) Towers of Alexandria and Tim (Sandy) Towers of Nashville, Tennessee, nine grandchildren and one sister Violet (Melvin) Eastlund of Osakis.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her former husband Bruce Towers, her sisters Helen Floding and Minerva Paulson, and her brothers Roy, Sidney and Clarence Floding.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, January 27, 1998 at 11 a.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Nelson with Reverend Merlin Bartelt officiating. Pallbearers were Robert Ferris, Tony Rassat, Melvon Miller, Robert Krueger, Jerry Jensen and Carl Steuck.
Interment was at the Geneva Cemetery in Alexandria. Services were directed by Petermeier's Alexandria Funeral Home.

Ole Rosby, 88
Ole was born on June 19, 1909 in Mohall, North Dakota, the son of John and Nicolene (Krogness) Rosby. At the age of three Ole and his family moved to Pope County. He attended School District #28 in Pope County and graduated from Fergus Falls High School.
Ole was united in marriage to Rosella Larson on October 6, 1938 at the Farwell Parsonage. After their marriage Ole and Rosella went into partnership with his father at the Phillips "66" Station in Farwell. In 1950, Ole took over the station which the family ran until 1971.
Ole also worked for the Phillips "66" Station in Alexandria from 1954 to 1960. In August of 1960, Harvey Gloege hired him and Ole retired from Gloeges on August 30, 1985.
Mr. Rosby died on Thursday, January 15, 1998 at the Glenwood Retirement Center. He is survived by his wife Rosella of Glenwood; one daughter, Arlene Kirkwold and husband Larry of Hot Springs, AR; one son: Stan Rosby and wife Mary of Minneapolis; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Kenneth.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 24, 1998, 11 a.m. at Nora Lutheran Church with Reverend James Radatz officiating. The organist was Marlene Maanum.
Pallbearers were Stan Rosby, Larry Kirkwold, Tom Kirkwold, Trent Rosby, Tory Belgum and James Belgum.
Interment was at the Nora Lutheran Cemetery. Services were directed by Petermeier's Alexandria Funeral Home.

George Schuneman, 66
George Edwin Schuneman was born May 5, 1931 in Belle River Township to Charles and Clara (Roth) Schuneman. George was baptized and confirmed at Immanuel Lutheran Church at Carlos and attended rural school in Belle River. Following graduation from Alexandria High School in 1951, George entered the U.S. military, serving in the Army as an aircraft mechanic from 1954 to 1956.
He worked road construction during his high school years and also after his marriage. George was married to Irene Carlquist on June 23, 1956 at Fahlun Lutheran Church in Nelson. The family resided in Belle River Township and Spruce Hill Township where George farmed. In 1980, he began working for the R & R Redi-Mix Company.
George and his family were members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Carlos where he was active in many areas. He enjoyed farming, working with tractors, traveling and spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren.
George was a loving husband and father. He was known for his sense of humor which will be missed by many people. George died at his home in Spruce Hill Township January 23 1998 after a short battle with Cancer. He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant brother and an infant son.
Surviving him are his wife Irene of Carlos; sons: Gary and wife Karen of Kensington; Robert and friend Lisa Good of Torrance, CA; three brothers: Harlan and wife Lillian Schuneman of Carlos; Merle and wife Barbara Schuneman of Carlos; Richard and wife, Gloria Schuneman of Alexandria; two sisters: Eleanor and husband Dean Yohnke of Carlos; Dorothy and husband Robert Pederson of Miltona; and three grandchildren: Craig Jennissen of Portland, OR; and Connor and Bennett Schuneman.
Funeral services were held January 26, 1998 at Trinity Lutheran Church of Carlos with Reverend Robert Petersen officiating. Joan Petersen was the organist and Gene Inwards, the vocal soloist.
Interment was in the Trinity Church Cemetery with George's nieces and nephews Karen, Linda, Rachel, Mark, David, Melissa and Scott Schuneman, Dale, Scott and Matthew Carlquist, Rebecca Ritter, Debra Carlson, Jane Pederson, Bret Pederson, Kimberly Deniswicz, Charles and Ronald Yohnke, Pamela Engstrom, Nancy Collins and JoAnn Dalen serving as pallbearers.
Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.

Wayne Wormsbecker, 54
On December 6, 1943, Wayne Douglas Wormsbecker was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of Ralph and Agnes (Caba) Wormsbecker. He attended school in Robbinsdale and graduated from the Robbinsdale High School. He continued his education at the University of Minnesota for two years and then entered military service with the U.S. Navy Air Corps stationed at Key West, Florida.
Wayne and Joan Jans were united in marriage December 29, 1973 in Hopkins. They made their home in Plymouth where Wayne worked in real estate sales. In 1974 he attended school to become a certified auctioneer, a trade he practiced both in the Minneapolis area and in Alexandria.
Wayne and Joan moved to Alexandria in 1978 where Wayne was employed as manager of the Culligan Water Conditioning Service until 1988. He also worked for the JV Schmidt Heating and Air Conditioning business.
Wayne was active in both church and community organizations. He served as a Deacon and in many other capacities at the First United Congregational Church. He was a member of the Sunrise Lions Club and served on the Park Board for the city of Alexandria.
In August of 1996, Wayne was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Throughout his battle with the disease, he was active in ALS support groups.
Wayne died at his home in Alexandria on January 21 1998 at the age of 54. He was preceded in death by his father, Ralph.
Surviving him are his wife Joan of Alexandria; mother: Agnes of Golden Valley; sister: Dorothy and husband Wayne Hume of Colorado Springs, CO; brother: Raymond and wife Catherine Wormsbecker of Crystal; and two nephews: Scot Hume of Colorado Springs and Chad Hume of Chicago, IL.
A funeral service was held at the First Congregational United Church of Christ on Saturday, January 24 at 2:30 p.m. with Reverend Lanning Johnson officiating. Audrey Palmquist was the organist, Richard Osterberg the soloist and vocal duet music was provided by Kayla Koep and Jeremy Hanson.
Members of the Sunrise Lions Club were named Honorary Pallbearers. Interment took place on January 26, 1998 at the Bethlehem United Church of Christ Cemetery in rural Maple Lake with Reverend Kathy Gibson Christensen officiating.
Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria.

Genevieve Aslagson, 81
Genevieve Aslagson was born November 7, 1916 on the family farm in Holmes City Township of Douglas County, Minnesota. Genevieve was baptized and confirmed at Trysil Lutheran Church and attended the Pocket Lake School District #4. Following graduation from Alexandria Central High School in 1935, Genevieve was employed at Bethany Nursing Home until 1941. At that time she moved to Port Orchard, Washington and resided with her aunt and uncle, Reverend A.T. and Ida Moen.
Genevieve was united in marriage with Edwin Loftus on February 7, 1945 at First Lutheran Church of Port Orchard by her uncle, Reverend Moen. A daughter and son were born to the couple. In addition to caring for her family, Genevieve worked at the Retsil Nursing Home and later at the Puget Sound Navel Shipyard.
Following Edwin's death in 1972 Genevieve was reacquainted with Alden Aslagson. They were married March 25, 1978 at the home of her daughter Cheryl. The couple returned to Minnesota and made their home in Holmes City Township. They would have observed their 20th wedding anniversary in a short time.
Genevieve's Christian faith was evident in her daily life. She was involved in many church activities including choir, the Ladies Aid, and sewing quilts for mission projects. Genevieve enjoyed doing handwork, crocheting, embroidery and working crossword puzzles.
A quiet, peaceful death came to Genevieve at her home in Holmes City Township. On January 19, 1998 she was received into the loving arms of her Savior with the confidence of eternal life.
Preceding her in death were here parents; her first husband Edwin Loftus; three brothers: Orville, Milford and Vernon Gulbranson.
She is survived by her dear husband Alden Aslagson of Holmes City Township; daughter Cheryl and husband Ron Kinney of Port Orchard, WA; son, Noel and wife Pat Loftus of Cibolo, TX; a step-son, Paul and wife Joni Aslagson of Alexandria; two step-daughters: Joan and husband Jerry (Albers) of Villard; Carol and husband Gerald Garrelts of Alexandria; two brothers: Iver and wife Evelyn Gulbranson of Alexandria; Irvin Gulbranson of Port Orchard, WA; four grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; and 9 step-great grandchildren.
A memorial service was held January 24, 1998 at Trinity Lutheran Church of Holmes City with Reverend Shelly Olson officiating. Jan Myhr served as organist and Harland Angen was the vocal soloist. Honorary pallbearers were Iver Gulbranson, Irvin Gulbranson and William Guiles. Interment will be in the Sunset Lane Cemetery in Port Orchard, WA.
Arrangements were with the Anderson Funeral Home Alexandria.

Harold Hertel, 68
Harold (Bud) W. Hertel, 68, of Alexandria, Minnesota and formerly of Bertha passed away at the Community Memorial Home in Osakis on Saturday, January 24, 1998.
Harold was born in Moran Township near Bertha on August 25, 1929, the son of Harold H. and Carrie A. (Dittus) Hertel. He spent his grade school years in country schools, graduating from Bertha High School. Before and after serving 21 months in the Army in Korea he worked with his father as a carpenter/mason.
On June 17, 1956, Harold was joined in marriage to Evelyn Voge of Bertha. He worked for a wholesale grocer in Wadena, later Bertha for a few years before moving to Alexandria where he worked for Ludke Co., Inc. Wholesale Grocer for over 30 years delivering to stores in Alexandria and working in the warehouse and freezer departments.
He has been a member of the Methodist Church all his life, first at the Moran Church, the South Bertha Church and later the Alexandria United Methodist Church.
His hobbies were gardening, fishing and being outdoors watching nature. Spending time with his family was very important to him.
Preceding him in death were his parents Harold H. and Carrie A. Hertel and two brothers, Phillip and Robert.
Harold is survived by his wife Evelyn; daughter, Alice of Plymouth; three sons: Calvin (Mary) of Sauk Rapids; Richard of Brooklyn Center; Douglas (Wendy) of Pensacola, FL; three grandchildren: David, Lorena and Jessica; one sister Katherine Sanderson of Lakeland; and one aunt Wilma Swanson of Eden Prairie.
Funeral services were held at the United Methodist Church on Wednesday, January 28 at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Bill Rowen officiating.
Pallbearers were Roger Hertel, Mike Bernstetter, Dale Paine, Tony Faust, Bernie Korkowski, and Lamont Mounsdon. Honorary pallbearers were family and friends.
Interment was in the Kinkead Cemetery. Services were directed by Petermeier's Alexandria Funeral Home.

Mathias Klimek, 94
Mathias Klimek, age 94, of Urbank, Minnesota, passed away on Saturday, January 24, 1998 at the Veterans Hospital in St. Cloud.
Mathias Joseph Klimek was born on August 12, 1903 in Leaf Mountain Township, Otter Tail County, Minnesota, to Peter and Lucy (Klimek) Klimek. He was the first boy baptized at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Urbank by Father Urbanke. He attended Sacred Heart Elementary School. He attended Little Falls Business College and graduated in 1922. He served for 22 years in the Army Air Force, achieving the rank of Master Sergeant. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the American Defense Service Ribbon during WWII as a Communications Chief, serving in Honolulu and the Fiji Islands. After his retirement from the military, Math worked as a motel clerk in Kansas City for many years. He retired and had spent the last 27 years back in Urbank.
He was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish. Math was the one who sent in the daily cards with poems or riddles for the KXRA radio birthday club. He was an avid football and baseball fan, who had played a lot of baseball himself when he was young.
He is survived by his brother, Nicholas Klimek of Sauk Rapids and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents, four brothers: Theodore, Paul, Alexander and Andrew Klimek; four sisters: Anne Guenther, Theresa Woida, Sr. Perpetua, O.S.F., and Mary Klimek.
Mass of Resurrection was held on Tuesday, January 27, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church in Urbank with Father Jeff Ethen officiating. Lector was Joe Dorn Jr. and crossbearer was Kevin Suchy. The giftbearers were Kayla Kelly. Melissa Waldorf, Julie and Kami Jesnowski. The Eucharist minister was Joseph Klimek, and the servers were Isaac Dorn, Ryan Suchy, Jason and Justin Fiedler. Musicians were organist, Tonya Klimek who also sang a duet with the soloist, Lisa Bitzan.
Pallbearers were Vernon, Dennis and Tobby Klimek, Maynard Guenther, Wilfred Woida and Matthew Kelly.
Interment was at the church cemetery with military honors provided by the Millerville Legion.
Arrangements were with the Markham-LaMere Funeral Home in Parkers Prairie.

Fred J. Kuhn, 89
Fred was born on November 17, 1908 in Millerville, Minnesota, the youngest son and last survivor of John and Mary (Renkes) Kuhn. Fred was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith and attended Catholic School in Millerville through the ninth grade.
Fred was united in marriage to Julitta Otto on March 30, 1937 in Urbank. The couple farmed for many years and Mr. Kuhn also did some carpenter work. In 1972 he sold the farm to his son, Ken, but continued to help him until 1980. In 1980 he took over full time as janitor at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church.
One of Mr. Kuhn's proudest accomplishments was upgrading the Millerville Cemetery. He and Julitta spent many hours trimming trees and fixing monuments. He retired as janitor and caretaker two years ago.
Fred was a member of the Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus. He also enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Mr. Kuhn died on Saturday, January 24, 1998 in Alexandria. He is survived by his wife, Julitta; five children: Howard and wife Gladys of South Charleston, West Virginia; Leon and wife Carol of Palmer, Alaska; Ken and wife Mary Ann of Millerville; Greg and wife Mary of Cambridge; Melissa and husband LeRoy Bitzan of Alexandria; 13 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Mary Jane Koep on August 9, 1966; parents; and eight brothers and sisters.
Parish Prayer service was held on Tuesday, January 27, 1998, 8 p.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church and a Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus Rosary at 8:30 p.m.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday, January 28, 1998, 10:30 a.m. at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Church with Father Eugene Lemm officiating. Musical selections were by Greg and Mary Kuhn, Rosella Korkowski and Carol Hughes.
Honorary Pallbearers were Phil Roers, Ralph Roers, Nick Otto, George Bitzan, Herb Haiden, Verle Moore, Dick Schnettler and George Holthaus.
Pallbearers were his grandchildren Steve Kuhn, Dan Kuhn, Jeff Kuhn, John Kuhn, Joel Kuhn, Michelle Behm, Lisa Bowman, Lori Evers, Tanya Smith, Karen Kuhn, Aaron Kuhn, Matthew Kuhn and DeAnna Kuhn.
Interment was at Our Lady of Seven Dolors Catholic Cemetery. Services were directed by Petermeier's Alexandria Funeral Home.

Velma Seaman, 87
Velma Florence Seaman, 87, of 800 East 14th Street, Sioux Falls, South Dakota, died January 24, 1998 in Good Samaritan Center where she had been a resident for one and one-half years. Velma Churchill was born November, 1, 1911 in Maidenrock, Wisconsin. She graduated from Red Wing High School and later attended Teacher's College in Winona, Minnesota and business school in Minneapolis, Minnesota
She married Kenneth Seaman June 2, 1933 in Red Wing. She worked at International Multifoods as a telephone operator for three years and later was a real estate agent for Spring Realty in Minneapolis. Velma lived in Edina, Minnesota for 20 years. She and her husband retired in 1969 and moved to Lake Carlos where they lived for 25 years before moving to Sioux Falls in 1994.
In addition to her husband of 64 years, survivors include: one daughter, Lynne Mall of Hemet, California; two sons, Richard of Sioux Falls and Ron of Minneapolis; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Memorial services were held Monday, January 26, 1998, 10 a.m. in Miller Funeral Chapel with burial of the cremated remains in Woodlawn Cemetery.
The family requests that memorials be directed to The Good Samaritan Center in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Arrangements are with the Miller Funeral Home in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Vernon Lehn, 78
Vernon C. Lehn was born on March 2, 1919 at the home farm in Brandon Township, the son of Mike and Bertha (Pehan) Lehn. Vernon was baptized and confirmed at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Brandon. He attended and graduated from the Brandon High School.
Vernon was united in marriage to Joyce Strom on February 17, 1958 at Brandon. He spent his whole life farming the home farm. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards and visiting with family and friends. He also served 30 years on the Brandon Township Board as Treasurer.
Mr. Lehn died at his home on Tuesday, January 27, 1998 at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife, Joyce of Brandon; two sisters-in-law: Alice Lehn of Bloomington; Ruby Lehn of San Antonio, TX; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Leo and Denis.
Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, January 31, 1998 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Brandon with Father Eugene Lemm officiating. The organist was Evelyn Lanners and the soloist was Bernie Thoennes.
Pallbearers were Clarance Lehn, Paul Lehn, Jack Korkowski, Steve Myrin, Paul Strom and Todd Strom.
Interment was at Chippewa Cemetery in Brandon. Services were directed by Petermeier's Alexandria Funeral Home.
