Ray Lund, 79
Ray Milton Lund was born in Alexandria Township, Douglas County, Minnesota, on September 10, 1918. Ray, the son of John W. and Nettie (Knudson) Lund was baptized and confirmed at Calvary Lutheran Church. He attended School District 83 near Nelson and Central High School in Alexandria.
Ray was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years. He joined the National Guard and in 1940 entered the US Army, stationed at Camp Hahn, California. He fought and was wounded in action at the Battle of Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. After receiving his honorable discharge in 1943, Ray worked in Minneapolis. He then returned to Alexandria where he owned and operated a resort on Lake Cowdry. He also worked construction in Wisconsin, Illinois and Minnesota.
Ray and Mary Ostrom were united in marriage in Iowa on May 14, 1953 and made their home in Alexandria. Ray established the Alexandria Hearing Aid Service for 28 years and for the past 14 years operated a book store, specializing in out-of-print collectable books. Customers from 40 states and seven foreign countries took advantage of his expertise as they built their collection of books. Reading and studying history were special interests of Raymond.
Ray had served as a Boy Scout leader for several years. He enjoyed reading and playing guitar for his own enjoyment and was also willing to share his talent with the Bethany Home residents. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and active in the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars for 50 years.
Ray died January 28, 1998 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in St. Cloud. He was 79 years of age. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers: Norman and Clinton Lund; three sisters: Rose Lund, Myrtle Clark and Florence Franzen; and a nephew, David Clark. Surviving him are his wife, Mary Lund of Alexandria; a sister Mable Peterson of Alexandria; sister-in-law, Evangeline Lund of Alexandria; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service was held January 31, 1998 at Fahlun Lutheran Church, Nelson with Reverend Merlin Bartelt officiating. Barb Sather was the organist and violin music was played by Linda Iverson.
Interment
followed in the Nelson Cemetery with Curt Berger, Jaime Warnert, Scott Berger Richard Peterson, Phillip Peterson and Mark Peterson serving as pallbearers. Military honors were provided by American Legion Post #87 and VFW Post #936.

Leslie Mattson, 79
Mr. Leslie L. Mattson, 78, of Kensington, Minnesota passed away in Glenwood on Friday, January 30, 1998. Funeral services were held on Monday, February 2, 1998 at Solem Lutheran Church, Kensington with Reverend James Radatz officiating. Burial was at the Wennersborg Cemetery, Kensington. Music was provided by LaVonne Rosdail, organist and Maynard Nordquist, soloist.
Casketbearers were Lyle Mattson, Earl Thompson, Noel Doran, Joel Blank, Daniel Blank and Roger Blank.
Leslie LaVerne Mattson was born February 25, 1919 in Forada, the son of John and Ellen (Johnson) Mattson. Mr. Mattson was baptized and confirmed as a youngster and attended rural school near Forada. On August 24, 1940, he was united in marriage to Ethel Nordin in Alexandria. The couple farmed for 17 years in the Hoffman area. Mr. Mattson then worked for the Conner Company of Bloomington in the shipping, receiving and engineering departments. The couple lived in Belgrade and moved to Kensington in 1989. Leslie enjoyed fishing and crossword puzzles.
Mr. Mattson is survived by his wife Ethel of Kensington; daughter Joyce Pasche of Tucson, Arizona; son Gene Mattson of Edina; three grandchildren: Kelly Mattson and Nicole Mattson, both of Grand Forks, North Dakota; Lezlee Pasche of Albuquerque, New Mexico; brother Dale of Arizona and sisters Veonna of Oklahoma and Ardell of Florida. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Ellen Mattson, brother Clair and sister Adeline.

Elmer Peterson, 83
Elmer C. Peterson, 83, was born January 8, 1915 in Alexandria, Minnesota and died January 26, 1998 in Spokane, Washington.
He is survived by his wife Marilyn at the home; step-daughter, Anna Stephens of Spokane; step-son, Mark Gorski of Billings, MT; four grandchildren, Desiree Faller of Palmer, AK; Bryan Stephens of Everett, WA; Michael Gorski of Redlands, CA and James Gorski of Billings, MT; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Mabel Engen of Waite Park, MN and Selma Wilke of Mesa, AZ; two brothers, Axel Peterson of Seattle, WA and Clarence Peterson of Rochester, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was a 52 year resident of Spokane, and a former 23 year resident of Alexandria. He was a WWII U.S. Army veteran, life member of the VFW Post #1435, Spokane, member of the American Legion Post #87, Alexandria and sheet Metal Worker's Union Local #66.
A memorial service was on Friday, January 30, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Hazen & Jaeger Valley Funeral Home, Spokane, with Pastor Gregory Smith officiating. Military honors were by VFW Post #1435.
Bernice Baker, 87
Bernice W. Baker, 87, resident of Boulder, Colorado, died on January 27, 1998 at the Frasier Meadows in Boulder.
Bernice was born on May 20, 1910 in Balaton, Minnesota to Nels and Ella (Swanson) Johnson. She was united in marriage to Max Baker on February 27, 1937 in Slayton. He preceded her in death in 1976. She had lived in Boulder since 1995 coming from Alexandria. She was a retired school secretary.
Bernice was a member of the First Congregational Church of Alexandria and of Eastern Star. Among her hobbies were gardening, square dancing, bridge, needlework and sewing. She was a devoted mother and grandmother.
She is survived by two daughters: Sandra Backlund of Boulder, CO; Drexel Pearson of Dallas, TX; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one son, David in 1985.
Memorial services were held in the Philips Chapel, Frasier Meadows Manor in Boulder on Friday, January 30, 1998 at 7 p.m. with Chaplain Jean Scott of Hospice of Boulder County officiating. Services were concluded at the Kinkead Cemetery, Alexandria, MN.
Arrangements were with the Crist Mortuary in Boulder, Colorado.

Nina Jamison, 83
Nina Katheryn Jamison was born January 5, 1915 in Rockford, Illinois, the daughter of Melvin and Bertha (Gibbs) Strang. She attended school and was married in Rockford to Norman Bleile in February of 1932. A daughter Norma was born to the couple.
In August of 1939, Nina and Vivian were married at Dubuque, Iowa. The couple moved to Alexandria in 1966. Vivian died in 1987 and Nina became a resident of Bethany Home in March of 1991.
Nina died at Bethany Home February 2, 1998 shortly after her 83rd birthday. She lived an active life, enjoying fishing, dancing and playing bingo. She liked being a homemaker and particularly enjoyed canning and preserving foods.
In addition to her husbands, Nina was preceded in death by her parents, three sisters, three brothers, a great grandchild and a great great grandchild.
Surviving her are her daughter, Norma and husband Rudy Nelson of Alexandria; step-daughter Berneda and husband Nicholas Silletti of Rockford, IL; two brothers, Fred Strang of Rockford, IL and Melvin (Bud) Strang of New Milford, IL; four sisters: Jane Krieg and Mildred Godfrey of Rockford, IL; Helen Fulfer of Miami, FL; Francine McCloud who lives in WI; three grandchildren; six great grandchildren; three great great grandchildren; and a special friend, Wally Bergstrom.
A funeral service was held at the First United Methodist Church of Alexandria on February 4, 1998 with Reverend Bill Rowan and Reverend Dan Christ officiating. Music was provided by Kathleen Haining and Darlene Hendricks.

Glen Johnson, 83
Glen H. Johnson, 83, of Evansville, Minnesota, passed away Sunday, February 1, 1998 at Crestview Manor in Evansville.
Funeral services were held on Thursday, February 5, 1998 at 11 a.m. at the Erdahl Lutheran Church with Reverend Allyne Holz officiating. Burial was at Erdahl Lutheran Cemetery, rural Elbow Lake. Julie Ritter was the organist and Scott Swenson was soloist.
Casketbearers were Jeffrey Ostenson, Curtis Ostenson Tony Zickur, Jerry Wiese, John Wiese and Mike Christianson.
Glen Harold Johnson was born January 26, 1915 in Pelican Lake Township, Grant County, Minnesota to Andrew and Hulda (Thornberg) Johnson. He was baptized as an infant and confirmed in 1928 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Evansville. He attended country school in District #38. On November 23, 1938 Glen was married to Liela Mahla in Elbow Lake. He farmed in Erdahl Township all of his adult life, retiring in 1980. He and Liela remained in their home on the farm until 1987 when the moved to Alexandria.
Glen was a natural at mechanics and could repair anything. He completely restored two old tractors, was an excellent welder, enjoyed carpentry and working in his shop. He also enjoyed fishing. Glen was a member of the Erdahl Lutheran Church and served on the church council and cemetery board.
Glen is survived by his wife, Liela Johnson of Evansville; son Larry Johnson of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, daughter Gwynne Nichols of Spicer; grandson Troy Johnson; one great granddaughter, Brittany; brother Vernon Johnson of Ashby; two sisters, Hazel (Walter) Ostenson of Elbow Lake; Gloria (Kermit) Zickur of Evansville and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Andrew and Hulda Johnson, an infant brother Vernie and one infant grandson.
Arrangements were with the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake.
Jack Mooney, 34
Jack LeRoy Mooney was born March 20, 1963 in Alexandria, Minnesota. He died on January 24, 1998 in Kent, Washington.
He attended schools in Lowry, Minnesota and North Hollywood, California. He graduated from Alexandria Technical College in Alexandria in 1987/88 with a degree in Hydraulics, Pneumatics and Robotics. In March of 1989 he relocated to Fresno, California and was employed as a sales representative for Hydraulic Controls, Inc.
In May of 1997 he relocated to Kent, Washington and at the time of his death, which was caused by a massive coronary, he was employed as a sales representative for Berendsen Fluid Power.
He is survived by his maternal grandmother, Myrtle Kalina; mother Shirley Eaton; sons: T.J. and Travis Mooney; twin sister Julie Porter; brothers: Mike Hodges, Tim Hodges and Aaron Eaton, as well as his girlfriend of nine years, Andrea Calabretto, along with numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. Jack was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather Wencil Kalina and father Jack Mooney, Sr.
Memorial services are pending in California and Lowry, Minnesota. He will be greatly missed by all.
Ethel Olson, 96
Ethel Evelyn Olson was born May 5, 1923 in Moe Township of Douglas County, Minnesota, the daughter of Albert and Jenny (Johnson) Julin. Ethel was baptized as an infant and later confirmed her faith at the First National Evangelical Lutheran Church of Moe Township.
On June 30, 1943, Ethel and Morris Olson were united in marriage by Reverend A.J. Scheldahl at the Farwell church parsonage. They resided near Holmes City and were members of Solem Lutheran Church where Ethel was active in the Ladies Aid. Caring for her garden and flowers were among her favorite tasks.
Her husband died in 1984 and for the past 12 years Ethel has been a resident of the Hoffman Good Samaritan Home. Ethel died on Sunday, February 1, 1998 at the Good Samaritan Home. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three sisters, two brothers and several nieces and nephews including Mae and husband Vern Pocharst of Barrett.
A funeral service was held February 4, 1998 at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel in Alexandria with Pastor Jim Radatz officiating. Interment
was in Solem Lutheran Cemetery at Holmes City.

Sue Remarcik, 56
Sue Remarcik, 56, of Alexandria, Minnesota died on February 1, 1998 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Services will be held Saturday, February 7, 1998 at 11 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alexandria with Reverend Greg Mastey officiating. Interment
is in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation is at the Anderson Funeral Home, Alexandria, from 5 to 8 p.m. on Friday with a 7 p.m. prayer service.
Francis Roering, 33
Francis C. Roering, age 33, of St. Cloud, Minnesota, formerly of Osakis, passed away on Monday, February 2, 1998 at the St. Cloud Hospital.
Francis Clarence Roering was born on May 18, 1964 in Alexandria to Richard and Irene (Feldewerd) Roering. He attended school in Alexandria and graduated from Jefferson High School in 1983. He attended St. Cloud Tech School for Auto Body work and was hired by Kline Motors in St. Cloud.
Francis was baptized and confirmed at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis. He had many hobbies and interests. He was an avid snowmobiler who looked forward to each winter snow season to get out and go sledding. He also liked to hunt each fall and was an avid Vikings football fan.
He is survived by his parents, Richard and Irene Roering of Osakis; six brothers: Donald Roering of Alexandria; Marvin and Nila Roering of Osakis; Roger and LeAnn Roering of Richfield; Darwin Roering of Osakis; Dean Roering of Alexandria; Mark Roering of Prior Lake; his grandmother Veronica Feldewerd of Sauk Centre; a special friend, Julie Thompson of St. Cloud; and many nieces and nephews.
Francis is preceded in death by his grandfather, Henry Feldewerd and his grandparents, Nick and Bernadine Roering.
A Mass of Resurrection was held on Thursday, February 5, 1998 at 10:30 a.m. at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Osakis with Father Victor Kinzer officiating. Music was provided by organist Charmaine Hartmann and the adult choir. Interment
was at the Calvary Cemetery in Osakis.
Pallbearers were Donald, Marvin, Darwin, Dean and Mark Roering and Kenny Marthaler.

Joan Rutgerson, 55
Joan Olson Rutgerson was born August 21, 1942 in Alexandria to Donald L. and Evelyn (Schultz) Olson. She graduated from Alexandria High School in 1960 and continued her education at the University of Minnesota.
Joan was married to Kern Rutgerson in 1965 in Richfield. They made their home in the Twin Cities area and were the parents of two children, Bradley and Angela. Following Kern's death in 1990, Joan returned to Alexandria where she resided until her death.
Joan was blessed with a beautiful singing voice. She won the talent competition as she represented Alexandria as Viking Queen and Miss Alexandria in the Minneapolis Aquatennial festivities and the Miss Minnesota pageant. She had a special love of animals and enjoyed caring for her pets. She especially enjoyed her travels to Mexico.
Joan died unexpectedly on January 29, 1998. She was 55 years of age. Preceding her in death were her father Donald L. Olson and husband Kern Rutgerson.
She is survived by her mother Evelyn Olson of Alexandria; Bradley Rutgerson of Rochester; daughter, Angela Rutgerson of Minneapolis; sister Judy and husband Blake Jaskowiak of Bloomington; and her special friend Darrell Freidlund of Alexandria. She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.
Memorial services were held Wednesday, February 4, 1998 at the First Congregational United Church of Christ with Reverend Lanning Johnson officiating. Audrey Palmquist was the organist and soloist. Interment
was in Kinkead Cemetery.

Baldwin Svendsen, 76
Baldwin Warren Svendsen, age 76, of Ashby, Minnesota, passed away Friday, January 30, 1998 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Peace Lutheran Church in Ashby with Reverend Allyne M. Holz officiating. Burial was in the Erdahl Cemetery at Erdahl.
Baldwin Warren Svendsen was born February 14, 1921 in St. Paul, Minnesota, to Baldwin Peter and Marie Veronica (Fadden) Svendsen. He attended Farnsworth grade school, Cleveland Jr. High and St. Paul Johnson High School. Like his father, brother and uncles, Baldwin went into the electric trade after two years of technical school and completing his apprenticeship. During WWII Baldwin served in the Seabees 75th Naval Construction Battalion in the South Pacific. He was a 35 year member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, the VFW Post #1635 in St. Paul and the Ashby American Legion Post #357. He had a passion for old cars and loved collecting them. His restored 1931 Model A Ford earned Outstanding Vehicle Award in 1995 at Alexandria from the Vintage Car Club of which he was a member.
On June 15, 1946, Baldwin was married to Lillian Eloise Alvstad in St. Paul at Arlington Hills Presbyterian Church. They made their home in St. Paul and raised five children there. Summers were spent at the cabins he and his family built on Big Pelican Lake north of Brainerd. He kept his wife and children busy with the many projects he concocted. A horse, motorbike, canoes and boats were added to make these years rich in memories. He took a deep interest in his nine grandchildren and encouraged them in their ventures and schooling.
Baldwin was actively involved in the T.B.E.W. local union over the years and also helped out in his brother-in-law, Reverend Emery Barrette's campaign for the Legislature.
He is survived by his wife, Lillian of Ashby; children, Kathryn Marie (Carter) Watkins of White Bear Lake and their two children, Jonathon and Allison; Karen Svendsen of Dellwood and her daughters, Erin and Sarah Notley; Karla (Kenny) Johnson and their three children, Jesse, Jacob and Megan of St. Paul; Kay (Owen) Hall and their two children, Nicholas Zisk and April Hall of Lino Lakes; son, Keif of White Bear Lake; an aunt, Ruby Svendsen of Maplewood and a sister Audrey Barrette of Mahtomedi and her children, Michelle, Grant and Scott Barrette.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Baldwin Peter and Marie Svendsen and a brother, Howard. Baldwin was loved deeply and dearly by his family and they will all miss him daily.

Mary Ann VonDerHeide, 83
Mary Ann VonDerHeide, 83, of Pekin, Illinois died on Tuesday, February 3, 1998 at Pekin Hospital. She was formerly of Alexandria, Minnesota. Born May 19, 1914 in Pekin, she was a daughter of William J. and Marie E. Albertsen Reardon. Her marriage to Richard E. VonDerHeide occurred on April 2, 1964 in Alexandria.
Surviving are her husband of the Veterans Home in Minneapolis, MN; three sons: Michael Carrington Simpson of Fayetteville, NC; Peter Reardon Simpson of Fairfax, CA; Vincent William Turner of Ivanhoe, MN; three daughters: Anne Marie Turner of Redwood City, CA; Jane Turner of St. Paul, MN; Barbara Elizabeth Sampson of Minnetonka, MN; one step-son, Charles Daniel VonDerHeide of Manito, IL; seven grandchildren; and one brother William J. Reardon of Pekin.
Mrs. VonDerHeide was a 1931 graduate of Pekin Community High School and received her bachelor of science degree in home economics from St. Mary of the Woods College in St. Mary of the Woods, IN. She served her dietitian internship at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D.C. She worked as a registered dietitian for hospitals in New Jersey, California and at the Station Hospital at Ft. Benjamin Harrison in Indiana. For many years she was a dietitian at Pekin Hospital.
There will be no service or visitation. Cremation will be accorded and inurnment will be in Alexandria, Minnesota. Memorial contributions may be made to the Pekin Public Library or the Douglas County Public Library in Alexandria.

David Wahlin, 95
David F. Wahlin, age 95, of Evansville, Minnesota, passed away Friday, January 30, 1998 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
Funeral services were held on Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Evansville with Reverend Irving Arnquist officiating. Burial was in the Mound Grove Cemetery in Evansville.
David Francis Wahlin was born November 10, 1902 in Lund Township of Douglas County, to Frank and Amanda (Johnson) Wahlin. He attended Kron country school in Lund Township and also attended Northwestern College in Fergus Falls for three years.
On August 26, 1926, he married Hermina Johnson at the home farm in Lund Township. They lived in Minneapolis where David was a street car conductor. They returned to the Evansville area and farmed. David worked for Land O Lakes Dairy in Alexandria for five years, then returned to Evansville and operated Wahlin's Grocery Store. He retired in 1962 and moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, returning to Evansville in 1972 where he has lived since. David worked for Bruce and Rudi Nilson at the Nilson Funeral Home in Evansville for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Hermina of Evansville; two daughters, Delores Wahlin of Evansville and Shirley (William) Hart of Las Vegas, Nevada; three grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandsons; three sisters and five brothers.

Gordon Anderson, 76
Gordon Philip Anderson was born October 30, 1921 at Granite Falls, Minnesota, the son of Hans and Mary (Bothum) Anderson. He attended school in Granite Falls, graduating in 1940. Two years later, Gordy entered the U.S. Navy where he served as a Navy pilot and instructor. In 1946, he became a member of the Naval Reserve.
On May 10, 1945, Gordy was united in marriage with Jeanette Haugum in Atlanta, Georgia. Four children were born to them. They made their home in Montevideo where Gordy taught flying and later worked at the Canton Lumber Company. He then became a sales representative for the BF Nelson Roofing Company which was later known as the Certainteed Company. Alexandria has been the family home since 1956. Gordy retired in 1983. Since 1986 he and Jeanette have wintered at McAllen, Texas.
Gordy belonged to First Lutheran Church, the Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star. He was also a 54 year member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars and belonged to the Elks Lodge.
Gordy passed away at McAllen, Texas on January 28, 1998 at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters. Gordy will be deeply missed by his loving family and many friends.
Surviving him are his wife Jeanette; children: Bonnie and husband Keith Melville of Brandon; Grady and wife Belinda of Big Lake; Caryn and husband, Mark Bongard of Eden Prairie; Julie and husband David Palloch of Owatonna; brother Alvin Anderson of Granite Falls; sister Hazel Halvorson of Montevideo; six grandchildren: Heather and Amber Melville; David and Ali Bongard; and Ashley and Brittany Palloch.
A funeral service was held February 2,. 1998 at First Lutheran Church in Alexandria with Pastor Ron Otterson and Pastor Keith Lentz officiating. Music was provided by Marlene Lentz and Pastor Lentz.
Interment
was in Kinkead Cemetery with Warren Halvorson, Gary Halvorson, Larry Halvorson, Pete Anderson, Michael Halvorson and John Anderson serving as pallbearers. Military Honors were provided by American Legion Post 87 and the VFW Post 936.

Mildred C. Olson, 85
Mildred C. Olson, 85, of Evansville, Minnesota, died on October 25, 1999 at the Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria.
She was born June 23, 1914 in Elbow Lake Township, Grant County, to Sever C. and Liva (Hanson) Nohre. She was baptized August 30, 1914 by Reverend H.M. Thoresen and confirmed May 5, 1929 by Reverend O.G. Aasen. She graduated from the Elbow Lake High School and then worked at Morris Agriculture School for a number of years prior to her marriage.
On April 3, 1947 she married Joseph A. Olson in Elbow Lake. They lived and farmed in Evansville Township. After retiring they moved into Evansville. Mr. Olson died June 24, 1999. She has been a resident of Crestview Manor Nursing Home in Evansville for the past few years.
She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and Circle. She enjoyed crocheting, going along with Joe and watching him fish and her sons and their families.
She is survived by three sons: John (Eileen) Olson of Plymouth, Dennis (Kathryn) Olson of Nashua and Harvey (Betsy) Olson of Elbow Lake; eight grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer, Julie, Renee, Jeff, Sarah, Rachel and Elizabeth; two great-grandchildren, Jacob and Jordan; and two brothers: Clifford Nohre of Alexandria and Orville (Alvina) Nohre of Elbow Lake. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph; brothers, Joe, Sam, Thomas and Melvin and a sister, Rose.
Funeral service was held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at Faith Lutheran Church in Evansville with Reverend Irving J. Arnquist officiating. Burial was in the Mound Grove Cemetery, Evansville.

Jean E. Anderson, 77
Jean E. Anderson, nee Jeanne Emily Hamre, died October 27, 1999 at Douglas County Hospital.
Jean was born November 1, 1921, in Minneapolis to Ole J. and Pearl J. (VanDevere). She grew up in South St. Paul where she attended grade and high schools and later graduated from Bethesda School of nursing in 1943.
She married Roy. E. Fladwood in 1942. They moved to Alexandria in 1955. He died in 1967. In 1973 she married Walter H. Anderson. He died in 1995.
Besides being a homemaker, Jean was active in nursing for 43 years, working at Knute Nelson, Douglas County Hospital and 17-1/2 years as a Public Health Nurse for Douglas County before retiring in 1986. She was instrumental in starting the first diabetic classes and the "I Can Cope" classes for cancer patients and their families.
Following her retirement from nursing, Jean volunteered at the Knute Nelson Home. For 43 years she was an active member of the First Lutheran Church, serving as a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Ladies Aide. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion.
She loved to travel, play cards and was a formidable Scrabble opponent.
Survivors include a son, Delmer (Roxanne) Fladwood, Minneapolis; daughters, Kay Harder, Minneapolis; Mary Jo (Mike) Baglio, Fridley; Patti Lu Fladwood, Alexandria; seven grandsons; four granddaughters; two great-grandchildren; a special cousin, G. Sherman VanDevere; a sister Karen McRunnels, Washington, D.C.; and sisters-in-law; a brother-in-law; many nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
She is further survived by step-daughters, Elaine Olive, Florida and Carol (Pat) Reed, Leonard; step-sons: Ronald Anderson, Tennessee, Glen (Susan) Anderson, Tacoma, Washington; Dave (Debi) Anderson, Alexandria; 15 step-grandchildren; six step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Connie Lee; a son, James; her parents; a brother Delmer Hamre; and a stepfather, Charles Campbell.
Jean was blessed with two wonderful marriages and a rich circle of family and friends. The void of her absence will be filled by the legacy of love and laughter she leaves to all who love her.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 30, 1999 at the First Lutheran Church in Alexandria. Pam Noetzelman was the organist, Harland Angen and Jack Trumm, soloists and a prayer was read by a family friend, Holly Haanen.
Pallbearers were her grandsons. Honorary pallbearers were members of her bridge club, including Dice Gange, Rose Ann Maloney, Estelle Farley, Doris Reznecheck, Pat Ripley and Sy McPhee. Cremation is planned followed by inurnment at a later date in Union Cemetery, St. Paul.

Adeline Walberg Nordlund
Adeline Walberg Nordlund, formerly of the Evansville/Alexandria area passed away on Sunday, October 10, 1999. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, October 12, 1999 at Zion, Illinois. Adeline was preceded in death by her husband Arvid Nordlund on March 29, 1997 and is survived by their four children and their families, as well as several friends and relatives in this area.
Daryl James Haack, 42
Daryl James Haack was born August 16, 1957 to James and Gwendolyn (Braun) Haack at Douglas County Hospital, Alexandria, Minnesota. He was baptized and confirmed at the Lands Lutheran Church in Hoffman. Daryl graduated from Hoffman Public Schools in 1975, graduated from Canby Area Vo-Tech in 1976 and attended University of Houston-San Jacinto. Daryl was united in marriage to Sheila Hagstrom on June 12, 1976 at Nora Lutheran Church, rural Kensington.
Daryl managed the Osakis Creamery Fertilizer Plant in Osakis for five years during which time he and Sheila built their first home and welcomed the birth of their daughter, Crystal Joy. The family belonged to the Osakis Lutheran Church in which Daryl was very active and especially enjoyed the Young Couples Club.
Daryl and his family then moved to the Houston, Texas area in 1981 where he was employed by Exxon Pipeline Company. He truly enjoyed his work and the travel and diversity that it brought into his life. Daryl and his family were active members of Hope Lutheran Church, Friendswood, Texas where he served in many capacities. During this time their son, Kyle Daryl, came home.
He was transferred to Bridger, Montana in 1988 during the height of the '88 Yellowstone forest fires. Daryl continued his employment with Exxon Pipeline Company while in Montana serving the Montana-Wyoming Line. He so truly enjoyed life in the mountains and surrounding valleys. He was a member of the Bridger Volunteer Fire Department and Yellowstone Valley Ambulance Service. Daryl and family were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Bridger where he served as president of the congregation.
Daryl and his family made the decision to return to their roots and "came home" again to Minnesota in 1992 when he became employed by Douglas Machines in Alexandria. He always welcomed and enjoyed the challenges and opportunities presented to him while in his Douglas employment. Daryl was so excited to go overseas representing Douglas Machines to work in Corby, Northamptonshire, Great Britain. The traffic accident which resulted in his death on October 26, 1999 was untimely and left all his family and many friends with a void that will not be filled. However, those who had crossed his path know that he would want us to carry on and live life in a good and Godly manner until we meet him again.
His most joyous moments were spent with his family, experiencing the outdoors including hunting and fishing, scuba diving, computers and working on his hobby farm. Daryl had an appreciation and concern for life and all people that was evident to anyone who ever met him and was a great example of how to live. We will miss him greatly.
Daryl was preceded in death by his father James Haack, grandparents, Emil and Amanda Haack, grandfather Albert Braun and uncle Elmer Haack.
Survivors include his wife, Sheila, their children: daughter Crystal (Terry) Gapp and son Kyle Haack; his mother Gwendolyn Haack, grandmother Gladys Braun, sister Vickie (Rick) Birdsall, nephews Bob, Derek, Trevor and Blake Birdsall, father-in-law David Hagstrom (Ann), mother-in-law LaVerne Edblom (Marvin), sister-in-law Nancy (Bryan) Anderson, nephews Bryan Christopher and Brandon Anderson, brother-in-law Paul Hagstrom, sister-in-law Cynthia (Matthew) Revering, nieces and nephew Ashley, Joshua and Lindsey Satre and brother-in-law Mark Hagstrom as well as several aunts, uncles and cousins and a host of extended family and friends.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, November 2, 1999 at Nora Lutheran Church, rural Kensington with Reverend James R. Radatz officiating. Burial was in Lands Cemetery, Hoffman. Music for the service was provided by Laverne Olson, organist and Sue Helberg, soloist.
Casketbearers were nephews Bob, Derek, Trevor and Blake Birdsall, Ashley, Joshua and Lindsey Satre, and Bryan Christopher and Brandon Anderson.
Arrangements were with the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake.
Josephine Theisen, 82
Funeral services were held on Friday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Sartell, Minnesota, for Josephine Theisen, age 82, of Sartell, who died on Monday at St. Cloud Hospital.
Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Josephine Theisen was born on June 28, 1917 in St. Stephen to Frank and Regina (Smoley) Vouk. She married Alphonse Theisen on July 7, 1942 in St. Stephen. She was a homemaker and lived in LeSauk Township all her married life. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and St. Francis Xavier Christian Mothers.
Survivors include son, daughters and sons-in-law, Dolores and Norbert Mick of Sartell, Richard Theisen of Sartell, Kathleen and Kenneth Colgrove of Alexandria, Donna and Douglas Novak of Sartell, Laura Burns of Sartell; brothers and sister, William Vouk Sr. of Sartell, Leona Lepinski of St. Cloud and John Vouk of St. Stephen; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Alphonse on June 5, 1986; sisters, Evelyn Vouk, Sally Kosel, Isabelle Legatt, Frances Staller, Marie Merkling and Antoinette Thometz.
Casketbearers were Jason and Troy Theisen, Allen Mick, Chadd and Shanna Novak, and Tracy and Tim Burns.

LaVonnie Atlanta Moon, 90
LaVonnie Atlanta (Johnson) Moon was born on July 13, 1909 in Lamberton, Minnesota the daughter of Joe and Margaret (Brewer) Johnson. At the age of 16 she was out on her own working as a waitress and kitchen helper in a restaurant in Tracy. There she met her future husband Millard Moon. They were married November 13, 1927 and farmed near Tracy until 1948 when the couple moved to the Nelson area.
In the early 50s they moved to Minneapolis where LaVonnie worked for Donaldson's Department Store for many years. When LaVonnie and "Moonie" retired, they traveled throughout the United States, parts of Mexico and Canada and spent the winters in Florida, Arizona, California and 20 years in Texas. In 1991 they permanently moved back to Minnesota and lived with their son Robert. The couple celebrated 65 years together before "Moonie's" death in 1993. LaVonnie enjoyed sewing, needlework, card games especially bridge, gardening, reading and fishing.
LaVonnie died at the Knute Nelson Home in Alexandria on October 23, 1999. She is survived by two sons: George (Joy O'Brien) Moon of Nelson and Robert Moon of rural Nelson; five grandchildren: David (Lana) of Sartell; Dawnette Moon of Alexandria; Donald (Jennifer) of Seattle, WA; Sally Moon of Yonkers, NY; Janice Moon of Bainbridge Island, WA; three step-grandchildren: Mike (Dottie) Markuson of Fayetteville, AK; Jackie (Stuart) Workman of Hampton; Paul Markuson of Dallas, TX; four step-great-grandchildren: Joy Noelle and Elliot Markuson and Evan and Nicholas Workman; four sisters: Lollie of Santa Ana, CA; Natalia of Farmington; Peggy of Owatonna; Donna Rose of Mountain Lake; and a brother Donald of Mountain Lake.
LaVonnie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Moonie, two brothers and one sister. LaVonnie always said, "When I go, don't weep for me; I had a wonderful life."
Memorial services were on October 28, 1999 at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Merlin Bartelt officiating. In spring, the inurnment will be at the Nelson Cemetery.

Mary E. Breitkreutz, 24
Mary E. Breitkreutz, age 24, of Alexandria and formerly of the Cloquet/Carlton/Esko, Minnesota area, died Wednesday, October 27, 1999 at St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
She was born October 28, 1974 in Duluth to Richard and Mary (Glowacki) Breitkreutz. She was raised in the Cloquet/Carlton area and graduated from Carlton High School in 1994. She loved being an artist and moved to Alexandria and attended Alexandria Technical College for one year. She presently worked as a team leader in plastic mold injection for Donnelly Manufacturing in Alexandria.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, Richard and Alice Breitkreutz; and her maternal grandparents, Chester and Rose Glowacki.
She is survived by her parents, Richard and Mary Breitkreutz of Esko; one sister Tanya Breitkreutz of Cloquet; her maternal great-grandmother Martha Finka of Zimmerman; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and very special friends, Gary Hoepper of Villard and Debbie Swant of Alexandria.
Funeral Mass was on Monday, November 1, 1999 at 1 p.m. at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Cloquet. Interment
service followed at New Calvary Cemetery.
