Marie O. Helberg, 90
Marie O. Helberg, 90, of Kensington, Minnesota, died Wednesday at the Stevens Community Medical Center in Morris.
Marie Olivia (Larson) Helberg was born in Nora Township, Pope County, January 27, 1910 to the parents Olaus and Ruby (Hagen) Larson. She was baptized February 20, 1910 with sponsors being Grandpa and Grandma Hagen, Mina Braaten and Knut Larson. She was confirmed at Nora Lutheran on October 5, 1924. She was united in marriage to Emil Adolph Helberg on March 29, 1933 at the Cyrus parsonage.
Marie's mother and aunts taught her the fine arts of being a strong woman, a true help-mate to her husband and a loving and caring mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Marie was, above all things, a woman devoted to her Triune God and lived her life in a quiet, conservative and God-fearing manner. She repeatedly answered her call to serve by being an active member in the Nora Ladies Aide, holding offices including president of the organization; teaching Sunday school for many years as well as being superintendent of Sunday school, Luther League advisor, singing in the church choir, sewing countless quilts for missions and making wonderful baked goods and hearty dishes for church events. Marie truly enjoyed being a part of the Kensington area community which, in her later years, included the companionship of peers at the local 50+ Club where she volunteered often for kitchen duties. Marie and her husband Emil were named Douglas County Senior Citizens for their active roles in the local and county community.
Marie loved to go fishing with her husband, Emil, and made the most wonderful fried sunfish and crappies. She had a green thumb that was second to none as anyone who ever saw her gardens could attest. Marie was a hard-working woman who always had time to help someone else. She loved family gatherings and was truly in her element surrounded by her relatives and friends while serving them her wonderful comfort foods of hot dishes, meats, home-grown vegetables, fresh-from-the-oven white bread and sweet desserts including Jello with fruit in it. Marie was the ultimate hostess, always ready and waiting for guests to drop by.
Marie is survived by her daughter, LaVerne (Marvin) Edblom of Hoffman; son, Roger (Audrey) Helberg of Hoffman; seven grandchildren: Sheila Haack, Nancy (Bryan) Anderson, Paul Hagstrom, Cynthia (Matt) Revering, Mark Hagstrom, Darwin (Sue) Helberg and Jeanine (Joe) Peyerl; eight great-grandchildren: Crystal (Matt) Gapp, Kyle Haack, Ashley, Joshua, Lindsey Satre, Darion and Colden Helberg and Brandon Anderson; four sisters: Myrtle Luthi of Hancock, Pearl (Omer) Christianson, Emma Barsness of Bloomington and Florence (Norman) Schwendeman of Inver Grove Heights; brother-in-law Harold (Bonnie) Backlund; two sisters-in-law, Mabel Helberg and Beverly Larson; and several nieces and nephews.
