Joseph S. Larson, 83, former SV resident
Joseph S. Larson, 83, of Eagan, Minn., formerly of the Spring Valley area, died Saturday, Dec. 6, 1997, at the Bloomington Good Samaritan Home.
He was born Feb. 16, 1914, in Hardin County, Iowa, to John and Julia Larson. On Jan. 30, 1941, he married Anna Soderberg in Forest City, Iowa. He served in the Army during World War II from 1941 until 1945 and was a member of American Legion Post 164. He was a machine operator for General Electric.
He is survived by his wife, Anna, of Eagan; two sons, Darrell and wife Retha of DeKalb, Ill., and Daniel and wife Lisa of Minneapolis and a daughter-in-law, Sheryl Larson; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Bernice Osterhus and Charlotte Christopherson of Spring Valley and Velinda Tangen of Brownsdale; and a nephew, Don Larson of Spring Valley. He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Larry, and two sisters, Gladys and Agnes.
The funeral will be 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley with the Rev. Jon Olson officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Hindt-Hutchins Funeral Home in Spring Valley and an hour before the service at the church.
Betty Jane Lee, 59, sister of SV woman
Betty Jane Lee, 59, of Owatonna, died Thurday, Dec. 18, 1997, at her home following an extended illness.
Betty Jane Lee was born Dec. 5, 1938, in Algona, Iowa. At an early age her family moved to a farm near Sargeant. She attended Austin schools and graduated in 1956. Following graduation she worked for Austin Savings and Loan. On Aug. 10, 1959, she married Willard N. Lee at St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Sargeant. Following their marriage, the couple moved to Hampton, Va., where Mr. Lee was stationed in the U. S. Air Force. In 1960, they returned to Sargeant and then moved to Owatonna in 1962. Mrs. Lee worked for Josten's for several years, for Owatonna Airport, and Office World in Owatonna. From 1988 to the present time, she has worked in the accounts/bookkeeping department at the Owatonna People's Press. Mrs. Lee was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church where she was active in the Altar Guild, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, and a member of the church choir. She was also a member of Via de Cristo group and had been a lecter, and a member of the Owatonna Elk's Club. She enjoyed reading, music, camping, Friday night couples club, and her family.
Survivors include her husband, Willard "Willy" Lee; two sons, Michael of Rapid City, S. D., and Roland of Elizabethton, Tenn.; four grandchildren; her mother, Mary Broadwell of Hayfield; two sisters, Shirley Sargeant of Austin, and Darlene (Mrs. Harold) Orman of Spring Valley; and a brother, Alan Broadwell of Austin. Her father, stepfather, and a twin brother preceded her in death.
The funeral was Tuesday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Owatonna with the Rev. John Kallio officiating. Burial in Owatonna Memorial Gardens.

George L.C. Leistikow, 89, of Burr Oak
George L. C. Leistikow, 89, of Burr Oak, died Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at his home.
George Louis Carl Leistikow was born April 15, 1908, near Donnan, in Fayette County, Iowa, the son of Herman and Ida (Warnke) Leistikow. He was baptized May 31, 1908, at the Windsor Church in Fayette County. He moved to Winneshiek County March 1, 1920, at the age of 11.
Leistikow was confirmed May 20, 1923, at St. Paul German Evangelical Church in Burr Oak by the Rev. Christian Pieper. He received his education in the rural schools of Fayette and Winneshiek counties.
Leistikow was united in marriage with Minnie Nelson Feb. 17, 1933, at the Lutheran parsonage in Harmony, Minn. by the Rev. O. C. Brenna. George was a farmer until his retirement in 1973.
He was a charter member of Burr Oak Lutheran Church, organized in 1928, held various church offices and served on many committees. He was a member of the building committee when the church building was doubled in size.
Leistikow was a longtime member of the Board of Hesper School, District No. 4, a Farm Bureau member, a 4-H leader for many years and belonged to the Heartwood Club of Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital. He was honored in 1991 by the State of Iowa for his volunteer work.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie; six children, Donald and Joanne Leistikow of Decorah, Joanne Engebretson of Edina, Norman and Marty Leistikow of Bloomington, Carole and Loren Evenrud of Minneapolis, Mary and Charles Casterton and Doris and Randy Patterson of Decorah; one brother, Carl and Lenora Leistikow of Decorah; one sister, Helen and Charles Fravel of Preston, one sister-in-law, Winifred Leistikow of Canton; and one brother-in-law, Arnold Osenga of Cresco; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-grandchildren.
Leistikow was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Frederick, Herman and Ervin; one sister, Amelia Smith; one grandson, Randy Leistikow; one great-granddaughter, Erin Engebretson; and one sister-in-law, Olga Osenga.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 3, at Burr Oak Lutheran Church with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Renae McIntosh was the organist. Soloist Harold Pederson sang "In the Garden" and "How Great Thou Art." The congregation sang "My Hope is Built on Nothing Less" and "Rock of Ages."
Casket bearers were his grandchildren. Burial was in the Burr Oak Cemetery. The Fjelstul Funeral home handled the arrangements.
Helen Lewis, 86, of Mabel
Helen Kephart Lewis, 86, of Mabel, died Monday, Dec. 1, 1997, at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.
Helen was born on June 6, 1911, in Preble Township, Fillmore County, to Cornelius and Olena (Hogenson) Erickson. She graduated from the Mabel High School and attended the Winona Teachers College in Winona. In 1930 she married Clarence "Ray" Kephart in Mabel. The couple resided in the Mabel area until 1957 when Mr. Kephart died. In February, 1959, Helen married Arthus Lewis in Hesper, Iowa. In 1961 the couple moved to Rochester where she worked as a psychiatric technician at the Rochester State Hospital. Arthus died in June 1987. In 1990 Helen returned to Mabel and became a resident at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home where she has been since. She was a former member of the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper and the Bethel Lutheran Church in Rochester.
Helen is survived by two daughters, Karen (Mrs. Donald) Bently of Farmington, Minn., and Linda (Mrs. Arthur) Nash of Spring Hill, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Jason Kephart, a grandson, Joel Nash, one sister, and five brothers.
Funeral services were Friday at the Hesper Lutheran Church in Hesper with the Rev. Hans Floan officiating. Burial was in the Hesper Lutheran Cemetery.

Verna Grace Lillie, 81, of Spring Valley
Verna Grace Lillie, 81, died Friday, Nov. 21, 1997, at Spring Valley Care Center in Spring Valley where she had resided for a short time.
Verna Guy was born Jan. 14, 1916, in Bennington Township in Mower County to Fred and Anna (Cooper) Guy.
She graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1934 and later graduated from cosmetology school in Minneapolis. She worked for Granum's Spring Valley Bakery, Agnes' Beauty Nook in Spring Valley and then worked for DeLuxe Beauty Shop in Austin as operator and manager.
She married Orville Skare in 1935, and they later divorced.
She married Lloyd Lillie on May 28, 1949, in Spring Valley. Mr. Lillie died on Aug. 16, 1971.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Spring Valley, First Baptist Church Ladies Mission Aid and Sunshine Helpers of Spring Valley.
Survivors include three sons, Rodney Skare, Gerald Skare and Bob Lillie, all of Spring Valley; one daughter, Eileen (Mrs. Jim) Alloy of Poncho Springs, Colo.; one stepdaughter, Verona (Mrs. Edward) Winslow of Chatfield; one stepson, Lyle Lillie of Jacksonville, Ark.; 12 grandchildren; 10 step-grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; several step-great-great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Myrtle McClary and Evelyn Leslie, both of Spring Valley.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and three sisters, one grandchild, and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. today (Wednesday) at First Baptist Church in Spring Valley with the Rev. Scott Nupson officiating. Burial in the Fillmore Cemetery in Fillmore.

Eva Liverance, 79, of Spring Valley
Eva Liverance, 79, of Spring Valley, died Saturday afternoon, Nov. 21, 1997, at the Stewartvilla Care Center.
The former Eva Smith was born Jan. 5, 1918, in rural Spring Valley, the daughter of Nathaniel and Jennie (Richey) Smith. She lived all of her life in or near Spring Valley. She married Wesley Liverance June 26, 1940, at her parents' home. The couple made their home on a farm in rural Spring Valley and moved into Spring Valley in 1954. She cooked at Spring Valley restaurants, the Root River Country Club, and for 15 years at the Spring Valley High School. Later she cooked for the Spring Valley Kiwanis and Commercial clubs. She retired in 1986 due to ill health. Mr. Liverance died Dec. 3, 1978.
She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and George Speer of Chester; four grandchildren, Craig and Corey Speer both of the U.S. Navy, stationed in Florida; Sheila Smith of LeRoy, and Russell Speer of Chester; 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Albert and Harold Smith, both of Spring Valley; and one sister, Edna Hazelton of Rochester, Minn.
She was preceded in death by an infant son.

Marilyn "Mort" Lund, 52, of Lanesboro
Marilyn Lund, 52, of Lanesboro, a partner in the Trail Inn, died Wednesday morning, Oct. 22, 1997, at Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel where she had been a patient two weeks. She had been ill with lung cancer the past year and had previously resided at Valley View Nursing Home in Houston and LaCrescent Health Care Center.
Marilyn Torgerud was born Dec. 31, 1944, in rural Peterson and graduated from Lanesboro High School in 1962. On Aug. 25, 1962, she married Lendell Lund. Her husband was in the military and they lived in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Okinawa, Germany and Virginia. She had resided in Lanesboro since returning here after her husband's death in a car accident on June 16, 1973. Before going into partnership with Alice Iverson in the Trail Inn, she was a secretary at a sewing machine company in St. Paul, a realtor, a veterinarian's assistant and worked at several area factories.
Survivors include her mother, Mildred Torgerud of Lanesboro; two brothers, Roger Torgerud of Lanesboro and Kenneth Torgerud of Rushford; three sisters, Ilene (Mrs. Richard) Peterson of Mabel, LeAnne Lauden of Hokah and Deborah (Mrs. Mark) Rasmussen of Rushford; and her companion, Charles Betts of Lanesboro. She was preceded in death by her father, a brother and a sister.
The funeral was Saturday at Elstad Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro with the Rev. Stephen A. Fiksdal officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Carrol Morris Main, 80, of Ostrander
Carrol Morris Main, 80, of rural Ostrander, a retired Bennington Township farmer, died Tuesday morning, Aug. 26, 1997, en route to a Rochester hospital.
He was born Feb. 26, 1917, in Colfax, Iowa, to Emory and Mary Main. On Dec. 25, 1942, he married Mildred Allen in Tucson, Ariz. During World War II he served in the Army Air Corps. He farmed in Bennington Township, Mower County, from 1945 until his retirement in 1984. He worked with the American Sunday School with the Rev. John Larson in Elkton for 20 years and he and his wife worked at Taopi Covenant Church for 21 years. Also, he worked with the Mojave Indians in Needles, Calif., for the Nazarene Church for five years and he and his wife conducted home Bible study for many years. He served on the Bennington School Board at the time of the school consolidation, served on the Bennington Township Board for many years, worked at the ASCS office and did odd jobs in the area. He and his daughter sprayed road ditches. He was a leader of the Frankford Boosters 4-H Club. He was a member of the Ostrander American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Karol Jeannie (Mrs. Frank) Krahn of Ostrander and Rebecca (Mrs. David) Pearson of Austin; a son, Paul, of Ostrander; nine grandchildren; a brother, Everett, of Ostrander; and three sisters, Gladys Main of College, Alaska, Odessa (Mrs. William) Mahlum of Longview, Wash., and Hilda (Mrs. Art) Fulsaas of Haines, Alaska.
The funeral was Thursday at First Presbyterian Church in LeRoy with the Rev. Gordon Larson of Grace Baptist Church in Austin officiating. Burial was in Grand Meadow Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Ostrander and Grand Meadow American Legion posts.

John R. 'Bob' Majors, 65, Spring Valley
John R. "Bob" Majors, 65, longtime resident of Spring Valley, died Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997, at Meadow Manor Nursing Home in Grand Meadow after a lengthy illness.
He was born March 14, 1932, in Duluth, the son of Bill and Agnes (Roberts) Majors. He attended Spring Valley schools, Hamline University and the University of Minnesota. During the Korean War he was in the Army with duty in the United States and Europe. On Oct. 10, 1952, he married Marilyn Finke in Spring Valley, where they made their home. Mr. Majors was employed by the Standard Oil Company and later IBM Rochester, where he retired in 1987 after 30 years of service. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and sons-in-law, Robyn and Dan Anderson and Carol and Dave Thouin; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Tim and Val Majors and Steve Majors; seven grandchildren, Jordan and Kyle Anderson, Nick and Chris Thouin and Katie, Grant and Carolyn Majors; all of Spring Valley. He was preceded in death by his parents.
The memorial service was 2 p.m., Tuesday, at Faith United Methodist Church with the Rev. James Ross officiating. Burial will be in Spring Valley Cemetery. His body was cremated.

Glenn Maland, 91, formerly of Peterson
Glenn V. Maland, 91, a retired area farmer, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997, at Gundersen Lutheran Hospital in LaCrosse.
He was born November 16, 1905, on the family farm near Peterson and farmed all his working life. On June 17, 1931, he married Violette Anderson of Mabel. She died June 1984. Maland was a member of Arendahl Lutheran Church and served on the Fremont Township Board. He enjoyed fishing in the creek on the farm, woodworking and traveling.
Survivors include a son, Eric of Las Vegas, Nev.; five daughters, Gwen Curtis of Sacramento, Calif., Ellen Overland of Rushford, Joanne (Mrs. Norman) Ellertson of Billings, Mont., Rose Marie (Mrs. Daniel) Hughes of Rochester and Sharon (Mrs. Paul) Banitt of Creighton, Neb.; 19 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren and a sister, Lillian Markegard of Rushford. A brother and five sisters preceded him in death.
The funeral was last Wednesday at Arendahl Lutheran Church in rural Peterson, with the Rev. Frank Kerkemeyer officiating. Burial was in the Arendahl Lutheran Cemetery.
Doris McCallson, 83, of Mabel
Doris G. McCallson, 83, of Mabel, died Friday, Dec. 26, 1997, at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel.
She was born Sept. 29, 1914, in Amherst Township, Fillmore County, to Rueben and Florence (Gordon) Capron. She attended country schools and then on Oct. 21, 1933, she married Alton McCallson in Decorah. They lived their entire married life in rural Mabel where she was a homemaker and Alton was a farm laborer and also worked for the Fillmore County Highway Department. Alton died in 1964. Doris moved to Canton in 1966 and then to Caledonia in 1979. In 1985 she moved to Cambridge Health Care Center in Cambridge, Minn. She had just recently moved to the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel. She was a member of the Newburg United Methodist Church of rural Mabel.
Doris is survived by two sons, Duane (Pat) of Cambridge and Larry of Brooklyn Park; six grandchildren, Mike, Mark, Tim, and Brian McCallson, Terri Kotek, and Keri Thompson; and six great-grandchildren, Samantha, Mitchell, and Emily McCallson, Kelly and Amy Kotek and Felicia Elftman. Doris was preceded in death by a grandson, Wayne; daughter-in-law Cathy; a brother, Orvy; and two sisters, Marian and Carrie.
Funeral services were Dec. 30, 1997, at the Newburg United Methodist Church in rural Mabel with the Reverend Leonard Wildes officiating. Burial was in the Newburg Methodist Cemetery.

Chester C. McClary, 87, once of area
Chester C. McClary, 87, of Austin, a retired Hormel Foods Corp. employee, died Nov. 2, 1997, at St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.
He was born June 6, 1910, in rural Fillmore County and attended rural Spring Valley schools. A resident of Austin since 1942, he worked at Hormel for 30 years before his retirement in 1972. On Oct. 26, 1929, he married Eva Bonner in Spring Valley. She died in May 1997.
Survivors include four daughters, Marilyn Pack of Austin, Marleen Huddy and Charlene (Mrs. David) Heinz, both of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Sharon (Mrs. Wes) Inman of Northridge, Calif.; a son, Wayne of Issquah, Wash.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Three brothers and five sisters preceded him in death.
The funeral was Thursday at Evangel Assembly of God Church in Austin with the Rev. David Harms officiating. Burial was Friday in Chester Hill Cemetery in Chester, Iowa.

Mabel McElhose, 87, mother of SV woman
Mabel Edith McElhose, 87, of the Denver Sunset Home, Denver, Iowa, and formerly of Waterloo, Iowa, died early Friday morning, Dec. 19, 1997, at the home from natural causes.
Mabel Edith Fleming was born Jan. 27, 1910, in Marathon, Wis., the daughter of Gordon and Helen (Uecker) Fleming. She was the oldest of five children. After Gordon's death in 1919, Helen married Henry Marsceau and they had eight more children.
Mabel Fleming married Herman William McElhose. To this union were born Kim Irene (Mrs. Milton Happel) of Orlando, Fla., Sally Annette (Mrs. Edward Ahrens) of Spring Valley, Alan Fleming of Atlanta, Ga., and Barry Brian (married to Karin) of Readlyn, Iowa.
Her entire life was devoted to her family. She shared her deep faith with them and instilled in them responsibility to God, family and kindness to others. She also loved gardening.
When the children were older, she worked at Black's Department Store Tearoom and at Allen Memorial Nursing Home, both in Waterloo, giving "caring" as well as physical care to the elderly. She made many friends at these places of employment, one special one was Mrs. Maurine Blanford.
Mrs. McElhose is survived by her four children; four sisters, Violet (Mrs. Ed) Treu, Dorothy Fleming, Dawn (Mrs. Henry) Hettinga, and Suzanne (Mrs. Norman) Adamsheck; seven brothers, Robert (Rose) Fleming, Elroy (Mary-Ann) Marsceau, Eugene (Kay) Marsceau, Harold (Lois) Marsceau, David (Melva) Marsceau, Henry "Bud" (Sharon) Marsceau of Readlyn, and Richard (Miriam) Marceau; a sister-in-law, Hattie Fleming, as well as eight grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Herman, one brother, Orville "Boots" Fleming, and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were Monday at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Readlyn with the Rev. Alfred Kruse officiating. Burial in Waterloo Cemetery.

Gary McGhie, 59, once of Spring Valley
Gary McGhie, 59, of Santa Clara, Calif., died at Kaiser Hospital of a massive heart attack Dec. 16, 1997.
Born June 19, 1938, to Elmer (Riley) and Loraine McGhie, he attended school in Spring Valley and Luther College in Decorah. He then served two years in the Armed Forces, after which he worked as a computer program analyst in Florida, Minneapolis and California. He married Pamela Johnson on March 18, 1972. They had four sons: Josh, Luke, Zachary and Drew.
He is survived by his wife and four sons who are at home; his mother, Loraine Sikkink of Mesa, Ariz.; two brothers, Curtis of Belvedere, Ill., and Steve of Rochester.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1975.
Funeral services were held at Lima Family Chapel. Interment
at Mission City Memorial Park in Santa Clara, Calif.
Elaine McKay, 71, formerly of Harmony
Elaine Elizabeth McKay, 71, of Byron and formerly of Harmony, died Wednesday, Nov. 12, 1997, at Charter House Health Center in Rochester after a courageous five- month battle with cancer.
Elaine Badger was born Feb. 2, 1926, to Verna (Searles) and Robert Badger in Cascade Township, Olmsted County, Minn. She graduated from Rochester High School in 1944. She married Merton McKay on Sept. 6, 1947, in Rochester. They farmed in Harmony until moving to Byron in 1974.
She was employed at Seneca for 12 years. She was a member of the Byron Methodist Church and the Byron American Legion Auxiliary. She was an avid bowler, golfer, and walker.
She enjoyed life to the fullest. She was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and friend to everyone she met. Her memory will be cherished by all who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her husband; a son, Milford and his wife Vicki of Houston; three grandchildren, Todd, Erik, and Sara McKay; one sister, Ione Colburn of Reseda, Calif., and one brother, Richard Badger of Rochester. Her parents, a sister and a brother preceded her in death.
The funeral was Saturday at the Byron United Methodist Church with the Rev. Bernard Lewellin officiating. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Gardens, Rochester.

Frieda Meisner, 85, once of area
Frieda Meisner, 85, of Eau Claire, Wis., formerly of southeastern Minnesota, died Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997, at Sacred Heart Hospital in Eau Claire. She had been residing at Oakwood Villa Nursing Home.
Frieda Born was born Nov. 20, 1911, in Fairwater, Minn. On Sept. 6, 1933, she married George Meisner in Rochester and they lived in southeastern Minnesota most of their married lives. Mrs. Meisner owned and operated a cafe in Park Rapids, Minn., for 14 years and had also lived in Osseo, Wis.
Survivors include a son, Merle of Somerset, Wis.; a daughter, Evelyn (Mrs. Harold) Mulhern of Eau Claire; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a brother, Vernon Born of Spring Valley and two sisters, Helen Root of Spring Valley and Margaret Russert of Winona.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at First Lutheran Church in Lake City. Burial will be in Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester.
Curtis Mensink, 58, Wykoff native
Curtis J. Mensink, 58, of Hastings, Minn., a veteran of the U.S. Navy, died unexpectedly Monday, Nov. 17, 1997, at St. Joseph's Hospital in St. Paul.
Mr. Mensink was born Sept. 22, 1939, in Wykoff, the son of Darrel and Doris (Kruegel) Mensink. He married Sharon A. "Sherri" Weiler on May 16, 1964, in Fosston. He retired from retail grocery in 1992.
He is survived by his wife; two children, Keith Mensink and his friend, Donna, and daughter Stacy and husband Ken McCloud, all of Hastings; two granddaughters, Tabitha and Sabrina McCloud; his parents, who live in Spring Valley; two sisters, Adonna and husband Eugene Cook of Hollister, Calif., and Yvonne Iverson of Bloomington, and aunts, nieces and nephews.
The funeral was Thursday at St. Philip's Lutheran Church with interment
in Lakeside Cemetery. The Rev. Phil Walen officiated. Casketbearers were Keith Mensink, Ken McCloud, Dave Weiler, Tom Schweich, Dan Iverson and Darrik Iverson.

Anna S. Merrill, 86, of Spring Valley
Anna S. Merrill, 86, of Spring Valley, died Monday, Sept. 8, 1997, at Saint Marys Hospital.
Anna Souhrada was born Dec. 23, 1910, in rural Cresco, Iowa. On Jan. 5, 1929, she married George D. Merrill. The couple worked on the family farm in rural Cresco until 1952 when they purchased a farm northeast of Spring Valley. In 1978, they retired and moved into Spring Valley. Mrs. Merrill, a farm wife and homemaker, was active in 4-H with her husband and children. She was a member of Faith United Methodist Church. Mr. Merrill preceded her in death in 1989.
She is survived by a son, Richard of Chatfield; two daughters, Elaine (Mrs. Cyrrel) Radechel of Grundy Center, Iowa, and Deanna (Mrs. Rodney) Comstock of Excello, Mo.; a sister, Emma Stevenson of Waterloo, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She was also preceded in death by a son, a daughter, three brothers and a grandson.
The funeral services was Monday at Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev. James Ross officiating. Burial was in Saratoga, Iowa, Cemetery.

Elaine Miller, 71, of rural Mabel
Elaine Ada Miller, 71, of rural Mabel, a farm homemaker, died Wednesday, Nov. 19, 1997, at Winneshiek County Memorial Hospital in Decorah.
Elaine McKay was born July 25, 1926, the daughter of Clara and Clarence McKay, in Preston Township, Fillmore County on the family farm. She was a Harmony High School graduate and attended Winona Business College for a year. On Sept, 6, 1946, she married Robert C. Miller at the Richland Prairie Church. They farmed in Fillmore County on the family farm. She was a loving wife, business partner and, most recently, a devoted caregiver to Bob.
Survivors include her husband, Bob; a son, Larry (Margaret) of Mabel; two daughters, Pam (Ben) Mason of Apple Valley, Minn., and Julie (Gary) Saboe of San Antonio, Texas and her mother-in-law, Frances Miller of Harmony. Her source of pride was her seven grandchildren, Jenny and Jeff Mason, Mat, Chris, and Andy Miller, and John and Kristin Saboe. She is also survived by her brothers, Merton and C.A. (Betty) McKay. She was preceded in death by her parents.
The funeral was held Saturday at Canton-Scotland Presbyterian Church in Canton with the Rev. James Scaife officiating. Burial was in the Burr Oak, Iowa, Cemetery.

Robert C. Miller, 72, of Mabel
Robert C. Miller, 72, of rural Mabel, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, in the Harmony Community Nursing Home in Harmony.
He was born Aug. 13, 1925, in Winneshiek County, Iowa. He married Elaine McKay on Sept. 6, 1946, in Richland Prairie Presbyterian Church. The couple farmed and raised purebred Angus cattle on their farm near Prosper. She died Nov. 19, 1997.
Surviving are a son, Larry of Mabel; two daughters, Pamela Mason of Apple Valley and Julie Saboe of San Antonio, Texas; seven grandchildren and his mother, Francis Miller of Harmony. He was preceded in death by his father.
The funeral was Saturday in the United Methodist Church in Harmony with the Rev. James Purdham officiating. Burial was in Burr Oak Cemetery in Burr Oak, Iowa.

Howard E. Milne, 82, formerly of Prosper
Howard Elden Milne, formerly of Prosper, died Friday, Aug. 1, at the Shakopee Friendship Manor at the age of 82.
Milne was survived by a daughter and husband, Mary Jean and Charles Ogee; granddaughters, Johanna and Molly Ogee; a sister, Audrey, and her husband, Phil Ford; brother-in-law Robert Gabrelcik and wife, Joyce; his aunt, Anna Vail; special friends, Sam and Eleanor Eastey, Lyle and Dorothy Crivits and Gene and Eleanor Heighberger; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Angeline; his second wife, Helen; his parents, Peter and Inez Milne; and brothers Richard and Raymond.
A memorial Mass was held for Milne at the Historic Fort Snelling Chapel on Friday, Aug. 22 with the Father James DeBruycker officiating. Interment
was in the Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
Harold Mohs, 74, of Postville
Harold Mohs, 74, of Postville, father of Mary (Mrs. Greg) Braun of Harmony, died Oct. 21 at his home.
He is also survived by his wife, Eileen; three sons; another daughter; seven grandchildren; three brothers and two sisters. He was preceded in death by an infant son and a sister.
The funeral was Saturday at St. Paul Lutheran in Postville, with the Rev. T.M. Marks officiating. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Brian A. Nelson, 23, of Fountain
Brian A. Nelson, 23, recently of Fountain, and formerly of Chatfield, died Saturday morning, Sept. 13, 1997, of injuries suffered in a one-car accident on Highway 80, four miles west of Fountain.
He was born May 27, 1974, in Anoka, Minn., he moved to Albert Lea with his family in 1977 and to Chatfield in 1979. He graduated from Chatfield High School in 1992 and from the University of Minnesota in 1996 with a civil engineering degree. He had been assistant highway engineer for Fillmore County since June 1996. He was a member of ASCE and Chi Epsilon Fraternity.
Survivors include his parents, Bruce and Judy Nelson of Chatfield; and two sisters, Julie (Mrs. Adam) Seurer of Brooklyn Park, Minn., and Brenda (Mrs. John) Schroedle of Eau Claire, Wis. His grandparents preceded him in death.
The funeral was Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Chatfield Lutheran Church. Burial was in Chatfield Cemetery.

Hope Newhouse, 89, once of Spring Grove
Hope M. Newhouse, 89, of Rochester, died Thursday, Dec. 4, 1997, at Maple Manor Nursing Home.
Hope M. Struble was born Aug. 27, 1908, in Mora, Minn. On July 9, 1933, she married James E. Newhouse in St. Paul. They lived in Spring Grove from 1933 to 1943 and then in Mora until moving to Rochester in 1959. Her husband died Nov. 15, 1997. While living in Mora, Mrs. Newhouse worked at Kanabec State Bank and after moving to Rochester was employed at the Knopf Insurance Agency. She was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy (Mrs. Wayne) Sather of El Paso, Texas; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Three brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church with the Rev. Steven Ronnigen officiating.

J. E. Newhouse, 93, formerly of Spring Grove
James E. Newhouse, 93, of Rochester, formerly of Spring Grove, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 1997, at the nursing home.
He was born Feb. 10, 1904, in Spring Grove. On July 9, 1933, he married Hope M. Struble in St. Paul. They lived in Spring Grove until moving to Mora, Minn., in 1943 and had resided in Rochester since 1959. He was a retired Minnesota Highway Department employee. He was a member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Nancy (Mrs.Wayne) Sather of El Paso, Texas; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a sister, Nancy Garness of Spring Grove. A sister and five brothers preceded him in death.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church with the Rev. Thomas Koellin officiating.

Lawrence O'Connor, 65, Preston native
Lawrence Michael O'Connor, 65, of Austin, died Sunday morning, Nov. 30, 1997, at his home.
Born Feb. 20, 1932, in Preston, he attended Preston Elementary School for five years and after moving to Austin with his family, attended Columbus Grade School and graduated from St. Augustine High School in 1949. On Oct. 20, 1991, he married Viola Harrington of LeRoy at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Austin. Mr. O'Connor worked at Hormel from 1950 until his retirement in 1986. He sang in the choirs at St. Augustine and Queen of Angels Catholic churches for 18 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Eagles and Elks lodges and Local P-9. He enjoyed yard work, family outings, golf, wine making, and traveling, including a trip to Ireland.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Dennis of Minneapolis, Joseph of Duluth, Shawn of Austin and Timothy of Savage, Minn.; three daughters, Nancy (Mrs. Joe) Rasmussen of Lakeville, Minn., and Peggy (Mrs. Jim) Cummings and Tamara O'Connor, both of Austin; 15 grandchildren; and two sisters, Marion (Mrs. Allerd) Johnson of Stewartville and Charlotte (Mrs. Harold) Dreyer of Austin. He was preceded in death by a son, a sister and an infant brother.
A Mass of Christian burial was Wednesday at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin with the Revs. Virgil Duellman and Paul Nelson co-officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Austin.
