Emil M. Olson, 85, of Preston
Emil M. Olson, 85, of Preston, died Saturday, Oct. 11, 1997, at the Good Samaritan Care Center in Preston.
Mr. Olson was born July 8, 1912, in Holt Township, rural Whalan, the son of Andrew and Mathilda (Evenson) Olson. He grew up in the Lanesboro and Whalan area, attended Diamond Creek rural school and later worked on area farms.
He married Fern L. Klompenhower on May 29, 1948, in Spring Valley and the couple made their home in Preston. He worked at the Preston soybean mill, and then for Morris Bjork Construction, assisting on the building of Christ Lutheran Church in Preston. In 1960 he began employment at Meadowland Dairy in the dry milk packaging division and later became custodial engineer until retiring in 1974. Mrs. Olson died Feb. 22, 1981.
His hobbies were his garden and the sport of fishing.
He is survived by three sons, Arlyn and wife, Marianne, of Minnesota City, Norman, and Jerry (Opey) and wife Diane, both of Preston; two daughters, Roxie (Mrs. Paul) Danielson, and Lois Olson, both of Preston; nine grandchildren, Kim and Jeremy Olson, Jodi Olson, Michael, Nicole and Shannon Danielson, Brandi and Trevor Olson and Ashley Olson, and two step-grandchildren, Teri and Daniel Root; four brothers, Irving and Henry of Lanesboro; Vernon of Minnesota City, and Melvin of Minneapolis; two sister, Melda (Mrs. Harley) Olson, and Verna (Mrs. Goldie) Haugen of Lanesboro.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Fern, a son Kim, three brothers, and two sisters.
Services were held Tuesday at Christ Lutheran Church in Preston with the Rev. Harold Deye officiating. Burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery.

Henry M. Olson, 76, of Lanesboro
Henry M. Olson, 76, of Lanesboro, a retired Department of Natural Resources employee, died Tuesday evening, Nov. 4, l997, at Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Rushford where he had been a patient one week.
He was born March 31, 1921, in rural Whalan. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II. On May 16, 1945, he married Marjorie Ivey in Tallahassee, Fla., and they lived in Whalan until moving to Lanesboro in 1959. Before beginning his employment with the DNR, he was a mechanic at Dietz Chevrolet in Lanesboro, and worked for the Milwaukee Railroad and Fillmore County Highway Department. He was employed by the DNR for 35 years and worked for the Department of Fisheries. He was a member of the Peterson and Lanesboro American Legion posts.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Ronald of Lanesboro; two daughters, Patricia (Mrs. Curtis) Olsted of Rochester and Sherry (Mrs. Wayne) Kingsbury of Chatfield; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Erving of Lanesboro, Vernon of Minnesota City and Melvin of Minneapolis; and two sisters, Milda (Mrs. Harley) Olson of Whalan and Verna (Mrs. Goldie) Haugen of Lanesboro. Four brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
The funeral was held Friday at Bethlehem Lutheran in Lanesboro with the Rev. Kerry Eversole officiating. Burial was in the Lanesboro Cemetery with military graveside rites by the Lanesboro American Legion.
Johnson-Riley funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to Bethlehem Lutheran Church.

Irving S. Olson, 87, of Lanesboro
Irving S. Olson, 87, a retired Whalan area farmer, died Sunday, Dec. 7, 1997, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford where he had resided since April.
He was born Nov. 8, 1910, in rural Whalan, grew up in the area, and served in the Army Air Force from February 1942 to November 1945. On March 23, 1946, he married Hilda Johnson at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church and they farmed in the Whalan area until moving into Lanesboro about seven years ago. His wife died Jan. 27, l995. Mr. Olson was a member of the American Legion in Peterson.
Survivors include two brothers, Vernon of Minnesota City and Melvin of Minneapolis; and two sisters, Milda (Mrs. Harley) Olson of Whalan and Verna (Mrs. Goldie) Haugen of Lanesboro. Five brothers and two sisters preceded him in death.
The funeral was Wednesday at Highland Prairie Lutheran Church in rural Peterson with the Rev. Stephen A. Fiksdal officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery with military graveside rites by the Peterson American Legion.

Margaret Olson, 76, of Grand Meadow
Margaret Olson, 76, of Grand Meadow, a former secretary at the Kahler Hotel in Rochester, died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, at Meadow Manor Nursing Home in Grand Meadow.
Margaret Svean was born April 12, 1921, in Chicago. On June 28, 1941, she married Orville Olson at Bear Creek Lutheran Church in rural Grand Meadow. Her husband died in 1995. Mrs. Olson enjoyed playing cards and working crossword puzzles. She spent the winters in Arizona for 22 years.
Survivors include two daughters, Orienne Bennett of Petaluma, Calif., and Glenda (Mrs. Ozzie) Spohr of San Mateo, Calif.; two sons, Bob of Grand Meadow and Orin of Blue Earth, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Svean of Norridge, Ill.
The funeral was Monday at Bear Creek Lutheran Church in Frankford Township, Mower County, with the Rev. Thomas Hughes officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Myrtle O. Olson, 86, of Lanesboro
Myrtle O. Olson, 86, of Lanesboro, a retired care center dietitian, died Monday, Nov. 10, 1997, at Good Samaritan Care Center in Preston where she had resided since 1996.
Myrtle O. Jenson was born July 9, 1911, in rural Lanesboro, graduated from Rushford High School in 1928 and attended St. Olaf College in Northfield and Winona State Teachers College. On March 18, 1933, she married Selmer "Sam" Olson at Highland Lutheran Church in rural Lanesboro. They lived in Highland before moving to Lanesboro in 1952. Her husband died March 17, 1982. Mrs. Olson was a cook-dietitian at two rest homes in Lanesboro and then, for 23 years, was a dietitian in the kitchen of the Preston Nursing Home, which was operated by her sister and three doctors. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, its ladies' groups, the American Legion Auxiliary and was a former member of Highland Lutheran Church.
Survivors include a son; Samuel of Dawson, Minn., two grandchildren; and a sister; Adeline Lillejord of Preston. A brother and five sisters preceded her in death.
A memorial service was held on Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lanesboro. A private burial service was on Thursday in Highland Lutheran Cemetery in rural Lanesboro.

Nansen H. Olson, 73, formerly of Mabel
Nansen H. Olson, 73, of La Habra, Calif., formerly of Mabel, died Oct. 6, l997, of a massive heart attack at Friendly Hills Hospital in La Habra.
He was born Sept. 9, 1924, in Mabel to Leo H. and Agnes (Holter) Olson. He graduated from Mabel High School in 1941. The day after Pearl Harbor, Nansen and Merlin Ford, also of Mabel, enlisted in the U. S. Navy. He spent about two-and-a-half years overseas in the South Pacific.
In October of 1945, he married Mary Proctor of Ottumwa, Iowa. He worked for John Deere in Ottumwa for several years. He then lived in Covina and Laverne, Calif., where he worked for Fortress Co. He later moved to Denver, Colo., where two of his daughters were living. He worked for Western Iron Works in Denver for seven years before moving back to California. He was living in La Habra when his wife passed away in May of 1986. In 1987, he married Margaret Smith of La Habra. He was retired from Adams Campbell, in the city of industry, as manager of methods quality and design engineer.
He is survived by a son, Nansen Jr. (Dana) of Wasilla, Alaska; three daughters, Nancy (Steve) Christensen of Monument, Colo., Charlotte (David) Hatch of Roseburg, Ore., and Linda Olson of Denver, Colo.; two brothers Arden Ladue (Sylvia) of LaCrescent and Quentin of Chicago, Ill.; one sister Darlene (Floyd) Strinmoen of Decorah; a brother-in-law, Leland Morken of Spring Grove; ten grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Mary, a sister, Beverly Morken, and a granddaughter, Dawn Olson.
Nansen attended Hope Lutheran Church in Whittier, Calif., where he was very active with a seniors and fellowship group and transcribing Braille for the blind.
Services were held Oct. 13 at Rainbow Chapel, Rose Hills, in Whittier, Calif. with Pastor Timothy Beyer officiating. Services were concluded at graveside in Rose Hills Memorial Park.

LeRoy S. Oviatt, 83, Wykoff area native
LeRoy S. Oviatt, 83, of Chosen Valley Care Center, Chatfield, died Monday, Sept. 1, 1997, in Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester after a one-day illness.
He was born Aug. 10, 1914, in rural Wykoff. He married Marion Gray on June 30, 1938, in Harmony. She died in July 1986. He was raised in Wykoff and lived in Chatfield, Utica, St. Charles and Faribault before returning to Chatfield in 1977. He was a farmer and owned and operated the Little Acorn Cafe in Utica. He worked at the state school in Faribault until retiring in 1976. He was a lifetime member of the Hunters and Trappers Association.
Survivors include a son, Larry, of Portland, Ore.; a daughter, Sharon (Mrs. Bernard) Bachtold of Longmont, Colo.; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Verleen (Mrs. Ervin) Borgen of Rochester. He was preceded in death by a son, a brother and three sisters.
The funeral was Friday at Chatfield United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dennis Cox-Townsend officiating. Burial was in Chatfield Cemetery.

E. 'Peggy' Paulson, 81, once of Lanesboro
A former beauty shop owner in Lanesboro, Evelyn "Peggy" Paulson, 81, died on Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, at the Gundersen Lutheran Memorial Center, LaCrosse.
She was born June 26, 1916, in Lanesboro to Julius and Clara (Sorum) Skarie. She was a 1933 graduate of Lanesboro High School. She married Archie M. Paulson on March 14, 1941, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 2, 1991. She owned and operated the Beauty Spot Hair Salon.
She is survived by a daughter, Linda (Jerry) Thompson of LaCrosse; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; a sister Verna (George) Barry of Holmen, Wis., and a very special friend, Carol Abraham of LaCrosse.
She was preceded in death by a sister and a brother.
The funeral was Friday, Nov. 28, at Trinity Lutheran Church, LaCrosse. Burial was in Oak Grove Cemetery, LaCrosse.

Milton Paus, 80, stepfather of Preston woman
Milton L. Paus, 80, of Eitzen, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 1997, at his home.
He was born Oct. 10, 1917, in Eitzen. He graduated from Elmhurst College in Illinois in 1940 and was a lieutenant in the Army from 1941 to 1946. On May 24, 1951, he married Lorraine Beardmore and she preceded him in death on February 9, 1982.
He and Ruth Halvorson Bucholtz were married March 30, 1985. She survives. Paus was postmaster in Eitzen from 1946 until 1982 and also during that time owned and operated Paus Grocery Store. He was a member of St. Luke's United Church of Christ, served on the church council and on the Eitzen Lions Club.
In addition to his wife, survivors include a stepdaughter, Geri (Mrs. Dick) Hellickson of Preston; a step-son, Bob Engebretson of Ely, Minn.; six stepgrandchildren; six stepgreat-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harold of Eitzen and Glenn of Lakeville, Minn.
The funeral was Thursday at St. Luke's United Church of Christ in Eitzen, with the Rev. Thomas Laufer officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Edith Pederson, 92, of Harmony
Edith L. Pederson, 92, Harmony, Minn., died Wednesday, Oct. 1, 1997, at the Harmony Nursing Home.
Edith L. Goldsworthy was born Dec. 9, 1904, in Winneshiek County, Iowa. She attended country schools and graduated from Harmony High School in 1923. On Dec. 9, 1926, she married Oliver Pederson in Cresco, Iowa. He preceded her in death.
In the early years of their marriage, they farmed in Winneshiek County, later moving to a Niagara Cave farm, where they lived until 1951 when they moved to Harmony. Mrs. Peterson worked for several years at the Harmony Nursing Home and Mr. Pederson was a custodian at Harmony High School and Greenfield Lutheran Church. She resided at Harmony Manor for a time before moving to Harmony Nursing Home on April 6, 1996. She was a member of Greenfield Lutheran Church and the Mary Circle.
Survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Grooters of Harmony and Dorothy Glynn of Staples, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson and two sisters, Eunice Jarland of Harmony and Elise Ratcliff of Gardena, Calif. She was preceded in death by a son, two grandsons and a great-granddaughter.
Services were conducted on Friday, Oct. 3, at Greenfield Lutheran Church in Harmony, with Rev. Jonathan Sorum officiating. Burial was in Greenfield Cemetery.

Theodore L.'Ted' Potthoff, 26, formerly of SV
Theodore Lance "Ted" Potthoff, 26, of Minneapolis, formerly of Spring Valley, died Thursday, Dec. 11, 1997, following a one-year illness.
Born Dec. 13, 1970, in Spring Valley, he graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1989, received a bachelor of arts degree in sociology and government from St. John's University and a master's degree in public administration from Montana State University. On July 16, 1994, he married Deanne Ruth Lange of Spring Valley. He was employed by the state of Minnesota and worked in the children, families and learning department. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors.
Survivors include his wife; his parents, Ray and Barbara Potthoff of Spring Valley; a brother, Tony of Fargo, N. D.; a grandfather, Raymond Sr. of Maplewood, Minn.; his in-laws, Ray and Marilyn Lange of Spring Valley, Dawn and Matthew Feirer of Rochester, Dan Lange of Minneapolis, a niece and nephew; aunts; uncles; cousins; a countless number of friends; and his devoted dog, Muffy.
He was preceded in death by two grandmothers and a grandfather.
The funeral mass was Monday, Dec. 15, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Spring Valley, with the Rev. Russell Scepaniak officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.

Marion Prestby , 92, mother of Canton man
Marion Olive Prestby of Boulder, Colo., died Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, at the Boulder Community Hospital. She was 92.
She was born Oct. 21, 1905, in Oslo, Minn., to Peder Oseth and Mina Nelson Oseth. She married Hans Prestby on Nov. 28, 1924, in Thief River Falls, Minn. He died in 1968.
She was a homemaker and moved to Boulder in 1980 from Thief River Falls.
She attended Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Boulder where she was active in women's organizations.
Survivors include a son, Hanlon Prestby of Canton, a daughter Eileen Johnson of Broomfield, Colo., four sisters, Ruth Morgando of Beaverton, Ore., Evelyn Greskowiak of Hibbing, Geraldine Satrk of Hastings, Neb., and Pauline Johnson of Menomonie, Wis; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Saturday, Dec. 20., at Mount Calvary Lutheran Church in Boulder with the Rev. Mark Peterson officiating. Interment will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls.

Alvina M. Randall, 75, area native
Alvina M. Randall, 75, of Maple Manor Nursing Home, Rochester, died on Tuesday, Sept. 23, 1997, of a heart condition.
She was born Alvina Muriel Rassmuson on July 31, 1922, near Peterson and grew up in that area. She was married to Morris Paulson and later divorced. She married Austin Randall on April 29, 1944, in Spring Valley. They farmed in the Lanesboro area and he also worked at the Lanesboro elevator. Her husband died on May 26, 1990, after which she moved to Rochester. She did private housekeeping and was a member of the Women's Auxiliary at Bethlehem Lutheran Church.
She is survived by one son, Merlin Paulson, Rochester; one daughter, Penny Laganiere (Mrs. Bryan Lerdall), Ramsey, Minn., 10 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren; one brother Orlie Rassmuson, Milwaukee; two sisters, Betty Cordes, Lewiston, and Eva Randall, Austin, Minn. A sister preceded her in death.
Services were held Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Lanesboro, with the Rev. Kerry Eversole officiating. Burial in Lanesboro Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or the American Heart Association.

Barney W. Reed, 82, of Spring Valley
Barney W. Reed, 82, of Spring Valley, a retired area cement mason, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, at his home following a long illness.
He was born Oct. 12, 1914, in LeRoy and grew up in the Taopi-LeRoy area. He moved to Spring Valley as a child. He married Helen M. Wilson on Aug. 17, 1936, in Cresco, Iowa. The couple made their home in LeRoy and for the last 40 years in Spring Valley. He was a cement mason for more than 50 years. After retirement he bought, restored and sold antique furniture. He enjoyed having coffee downtown and visiting friends. He enjoyed his family and the music they played together.
He is survived by his wife; two sons, Kenneth of Brownsville, Minn., and Wayne of Rushford; four daughters, Sherry (Mrs. Dale) Nelson of Rose Creek, Carol (Mrs. David) Olson of Inver Grove Heights, Minn., Glenda (Mrs. Leslie) Hillman of Austin and Candace (Mrs. John) Snyder of Spring Valley; 14 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a brother, Clifford of Stewartville and a half-sister, Lorraine Blade of Spring Valley. He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
The funeral was Monday at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Wykoff, the Rev. Robert Burmeister officiating. Burial was in the Spring Valley Cemetery.

Louise L. Rick, 83, of Spring Valley
Louise L. Rick, 83, of Spring Valley, 83, a homemaker, died Wednesday, Oct. 29, 1997, at Spring Valley Care Center.
She was born Louise L. Postle on Dec. 3, 1913, in Bloomfield Township, Fillmore County to William and Louise (Demkes) Postle. On April 6, 1938, she married Fred Rick in Spring Valley and they farmed in the Etna area all their married life. Her husband died in 1994. Mrs. Rick was a member of the Cherry Grove United Methodist Church.
Survivors include three sons, the Rev. Gene of Elk River, Minn., Willard of New Hope, Minn., and Louis of Rochester; a daughter, Elouise (Mrs. Melvin) Koenig of Edina, Minn.; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A brother and a sister preceded her in death.
A private family graveside service was conducted on Saturday at Etna Cemetery on request of Louise. Her son, the Rev. Gene Rick performed the service with Lauren and Ronald Smith, Karl and Riley Hoefs, Ralph Bonnerud and Buster Johnson acting as casket bearers.

Doris I. Riede, 76, formerly of Spring Grove
Doris I. Riede, 76, of Caledonia, formerly of White Bear Lake, Minn., died Thursday, Sept. 18, 1997, at the Lutheran Home in Caledonia.
Riede was born July 12, 1921, in Spring Grove to Oliver G. and Minnie (Trehus) Ellingson. Doris attended school in Spring Grove, graduating from high school in 1938.
She attended college at Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga., and then Winona State University, graduating in 1942.
She taught school in Bagley, Minn., for a short time until uniting in marriage with John R. Riede on June 23, 1943, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Spring Grove.
Together, they lived in Pittsburgh, Pa., until 1944 and then moved to Los Alamos, N. M., where Mrs. Riede taught junior high school.
In 1947, they moved to White Bear Lake where Doris again taught school at the junior high level. They lived there for most of their married life until 1982 when they moved to Caledonia. They were married for fifty years.
On May 20, 1994, her husband died.
Riede was past president of the Delta Zeta Sorority and also a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Caledonia, where she served on the ladies' organizations.
Survivors include a brother, Oren (Alvina) Ellingson of Spring Grove; a sister, Margaret O'Neill of Spring Grove; and five nephews, Charles (Audrey) Ellingson of Caledonia, Thomas Ellingson of Spring Grove, Mark Ellingson of Lakewood, Colo. Dean (Jennifer) Ellingson of Spring Grove and James (Andrea) O'neill of Babylon, N.Y.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and an infant sister, Gladys.
Funeral services were held Sunday, Sept. 21, 1997, at at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Caledonia with the Rev. Rolf T. Storlie officiating. Burial was in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Spring Grove.

Carl H. Rohe, 79, father of area man
Carl H. Rohe, 79, of Zumbrota, a longtime co-op employee, died Monday, Nov. 24, 1997, of an apparent heart attack while deer hunting in Goodhue County.
Born May 26, 1918, in Bertha, Minn., he grew up in a number of cities and attended school through the ninth grade. On May 20, 1942, he married Viola K. Dicke at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Haycreek. He was a pioneer in the field of artificial insemination and was the first to be certified in Goodhue County. Mr. Rohe was employed by area co-ops for over 40 years and had been a nutritionist since 1966. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Charles of Zumbrota and William of Wykoff; two daughters, Louetta (Mrs. Larry) Schafer of Goodhue and Barbara (Mrs. Jay) Isler of Tacoma, Wash.; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen (Mrs. Reinhard) Koepp of Brownton, Minn., and Ruth (Mrs. James) Chandler of Pennsylvania; and three brothers, the Rev. Herbert of Missouri, Arthur of Waconia, Minn., and Paul of New Mexico. A sister preceded him in death.
The funeral was Saturday at St. Peters' Lutheran Church in Belvidere. Burial in the church cemetery.

Edna Rosendahl, 88, of Spring Grove
Edna Rosendahl, of Spring Grove, died Friday, Oct. 17, 1997, in LaCrosse, Wis.
She was born June 16, l909, to Fred and Emma (Shaffner) Mueller on the family farm near Alma, Wis. They brought her to holy baptism in Fountain City, Wis. on Aug. 22, 1909. She attended rural school. In June of 1923, she confirmed her faith in the Triune God in Cochrane, Wis.
She married Oscar Alitz. Together they celebrated the births of two boys, Wallace and LaVerne. Oscar died when his sons were young. On Oct. 6, 1956, Edna married Harold Rosendahl in Iowa's Little Brown Church. They made their home in rural Spring Grove.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church of Spring Grove. She served and studied with the women's groups of the congregation. She was an avid flower gardener and enjoyed crafts and handiwork. She was a member of the Pleasant Valley Home Project Group of the Houston County Extension Service. She served her community as one of the first officers of the Spring Grove Area Semcac Board. Edna was a Gold Star Mother and a member of the Spring Grove American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband; five grandchildren; twenty-two great-grandchildren; her brother, Arthur Mueller and his wife, Rose; and three sisters, Ella Grossell and her husband, Helmer, Viola Hohmann and Alma Putz. She was preceded in death by her first husband; two sons, Wallace and LaVerne; two brothers, a sister, and one grandson.
Pallbearers were William Alitz, Dana Alitz, Peter Rosendahl, Karl Rosendahl, Fred Kroshus and Ted Kroshus.
The funeral was Monday, Oct 20, at the Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Louis C. Rubin, 82, of Grand Meadow
Louis C. Rubin, 82, a resident of Field Crest Nursing Home in Hayfield, formerly of Grand Meadow, died Monday, Oct. 20, 1997, at the nursing home.
He was born Aug. 5, 1915, in Dexter. On Nov. 9, 1941, he married Jean Atta Wright at the Dexter United Methodist Church. Mr. Rubin was a retired farmer and a member of Dexter United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Karen Rubin of St. Paul and Loyola (Mrs. Chuck) Shappell of Byron; a son, James of Grand Meadow; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Harold of Austin; and a sister, Elna Deyo of Brainerd, Minn. He was preceded in death by his wife, a brother and two sisters.
The funeral was Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Dexter with the Rev. Rob Gamble officiating. Burial in the Dexter Cemetery.

Allen Rustad, 75, of Fountain
Allen Rustad, 75, of Fountain, died Sunday, Oct. 26, 1997, in Olmsted Community Hospital in Rochester after a lengthy illness.
He was born June 28, 1922, in Rushford. He married Myra Evans on Sept. 29, 1951, in Chatfield. He was a veteran of the Army during World War II, serving in Europe for three years. He lived in Lanesboro for many years before moving to Minneapolis where he worked in a ski factory. He moved to Fountain where he and his brother opened an auto body shop. He sold insurance for American Family and was a sign painter for 20 years. He was a member of the Servicemen's Club in Preston and the American Legion in Fountain.
Surviving are his wife; two daughters, Glenda (Mrs. David) Olson of Spring Valley and Deborah (Mrs. David) Long of Fountain; four grandchildren; a brother, Duane of Fountain; and two sisters, Helen (Mrs. Robert) Jensen of Milan, Ill., and Lucille (Mrs. Vince) Schroeder of St. Paul. He was preceded in death by a son and three brothers.
A memorial service was Wednesday in Fountain Lutheran with the Rev. John W. Sime officating. He was cremated and burial was in Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

John L. Schott
Memorial services for John L. Schott were held on Oct. 11, 1997, at the United Methodist Church in Preston.
He had lived in Alaska for the past 22 years. He joined the Army in 1975 and served seven years. He was stationed in several places but made Alaska his permanent home.
He married Joanne Schoppers on April 25, 1982, and they later divorced. He married Mary Mills on July 26, 1997.
He is survived by his wife, Mary in Alaska, his parents, Marvin and Dora Schott of Preston, four brothers, Jim (Deb) of Fountain, Donald of Rochester, Dale of Highland, and George (Diane) of Preston; four sisters, Judy Horsman of Wisconsin, Carl and Glenda Scrabeck of Ackley, Iowa, Jean Schott of Preston, and Cara Schott of Rochester; 10 nieces and six nephews, and two grandnephews. He was preceded in death by both paternal and maternal grandparents, one niece, one uncle and two cousins.

Nona Mae Schultz, 80, of Preston
Nona Mae Schultz, 80, of Preston, died Wednesday morning, Nov. 12, 1997, at the Preston Good Samaritan Care Center.
Nona Mae Schaefer was born on July 4, 1917, in Bristol Township, Fillmore County, the daughter of Jacob and Edith (Young) Schaefer. She grew up in Fountain Township and attended school at Watson Creek. She married Carl A. Schultz on Oct. 12, 1940, in Preston and the couple farmed in the area until moving to Preston in November 1994. He died March 31, 1997.
She was a homemaker and loved working in her flower and vegetable gardens. She also loved to can her produce. She was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and a former member of the Family Birthday Club. She entered the care center in 1997.
She is survived by one daughter, Shirley (Mrs. Kenneth) Hanning of Preston, two sons, Russell and Robert, both of Preston; six grandchildren, Scott and Barb Hanning, Todd and Raquel Schultz, Carl and Wade Schultz; one great-grandson, Tyler Grover; two brothers, John "Jack" Schaefer of Fairfax, Minn., and Dell Schaefer of Maquoketa, Iowa; two sisters, her twin Mona Mae Holets of Chatfield and Pearl Yaste of Preston.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Jacob Schaefer, and one sister, Ida Wilbright.
Funeral services were Saturday at Christ Lutheran Church, Preston, with the Rev. Joe Schularick officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery, Preston.

William Schwering, 94, father of SV woman
William Joseph Schwering, 94, of Dodge Center, a retired farmer, died Monday morning, Nov. 3, 1997, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
He was born March 29, 1903, in Duncombe, Iowa. On Dec. 29, 1932, he married Alma Schroer in Duncombe and they farmed in the Duncombe area until moving to Dodge Center in 1961. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Dodge Center, the Farm Bureau and the Hayfield Senior Citizens.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Joyce (Mrs. Clarence) Arndorfer of LeRoy, Jean Kramer of Dodge Center and Terri (Mrs. Michael) Blanchard of Spring Valley; a son, Joe, of Claremont; 23 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; nine stepgreat-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Ball of Duncombe. He was preceded in death by a sister, three brothers, five grandchildren, three daughters and a son.
A Mass of Christian burial was offered Thursday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Dodge Center with the Rev. Charlie Collins officiating. Burial in Riverside Cemetery in Dodge Center.

Robert Scrabeck, 75, of Harmony
Robert Scrabeck, 75, of Harmony, died on Dec. 23, 1997, at Saint Marys Hospital, Rochester.
He was born Oct. 22, 1922, in Fillmore County, the son of Carl and Margaret (Deamon) Scrabeck. He was united in marriage to Helen Matthews on Oct. 26, 1951, at the Lutheran parsonage in Harmony. They made their home in the area and he worked for farmers in the area.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; children, David of Preston, Carl of Ackley, Iowa, Linda Novak and Sandra Scrabeck, both of Rochester; five grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Scrabeck of Visalia, Calif. He was preceded in death by a brother, Warden.
Services were held at the Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony on Wednesday, Dec. 24, with the Rev. Jon Sorum officiating. Burial was in the Greenfield Cemetery in Harmony.
Lindstrom Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth E. Shephard, 86, formerly of SV
Ruth E. Shephard, 86, of St. Paul and formerly of Spring Valley, died Friday, Dec. 19, 1997, at St. Joseph's Hospice in St. Paul.
Ruth Zimmer was born Aug. 8, 1911, in Wykoff. She married Ralph Johanns on Feb. 2, 1932. He died in October 1966. She married Wendell Shephard on June 10, 1977, and he died in February 1995. She was a bookkeeper for Donavon Construction. After her retirement, she lived in the Bradenton, Fla,, area for 27 years.
Survivors include one son, Chuck Johanns of South St. Paul; one stepson, Roy Shephard of Mankato; one stepdaughter, Patsy Moon of Fond du Lac, Wis.; four grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and 10 step great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
The funeral was Tuesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley with the Rev. Jon Olson officiating. There was a graveside service at St. Finbarr's Cemetery in Grand Meadow.

Donald "Bob" Soland, 74, rural Harmony
Donald "Bob" Soland, 74, a rural Harmony farmer, died Saturday, Sept. 6, 1997, at the Howard County Hospital in Cresco.
He farmed most of his life.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn of rural Harmony; a daughter, Geena (Mrs. Dale) Knode of Yankton, S.D.; three grandchildren; and two sisters, Leona Schultz of Amherst, Minn., and Mabel Harland of Harmony. He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.
The funeral was Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Harmony United Methodist Church. Burial was in State Line cemetery in rural Harmony.
Abraham-Lindstrom Funeral Home in Harmony was in charge of arrangements.
