James D. Spatenka, 58, of Grand Meadow
James D. Spatenka, 58, of Grand Meadow, a Huntting Elevator employee, died Saturday, Sept. 27, 1997, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
He was born Nov. 17, 1938, in Owatonna and graduated from Owatonna High School in 1956. He farmed for a number of years and then was a bartender until beginning his employment at Huntting Elevator in Grand Meadow eight years ago. On Sept. 16, 1968, he married Janice Johnson and they were later divorced. He had lived in Grand Meadow 10 years. Mr. Spatenka served in the National Guard and was a member of the Eagles Lodge and American Legion.
Survivors include a son, Donald J. of Lakeville, Minn.; a daughter, Teresa Spatenka of Owatonna; three brothers, Calvin and Robert, both of Owatonna, and John of Blooming Prairie; and five sisters, Lorraine Roe of Kenyon, Mary Ann (Mrs. Paul) Copp, Katherine (Mrs. Rod) Kyllo and Patricia (Mrs. David) Bock, all of Owatonna, and Donna (Mrs. David) Wobschall of Medford, Minn. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
The funeral will be 11 a.m. today (Wednesday) at the Associated Church in Owatonna with the Rev. David Droog officiating. Burial will be in Bohemian National Cemetery in Myrtle with military graveside rites.

Luella B. Stoppel, 96, formerly of Burr Oak
Luella B. Stoppel, 96, of Adel, Iowa, died of pneumonia Saturday, Dec. 6, l997, at Adel Acres Care Center.
She was born in Burr Oak, Iowa, and lived in Burr Oak and southern Minnesota in her early years. She lived in New Ulm, Minn., for three-and-a-half-years and then in Rochester for more than 60 years before moving to Adel 16 years ago. On April 30, 1924, she married Erwin F. Stoppel in Simpson. He died in 1981. Mrs. Stoppel was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Adel and St. John's Catholic Church in Rochester.
Survivors include two sons, Dr. Donald F. of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Duane E. of Adel; a daughter, Marilyn Fryer of Excelsior Springs, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren and a sister, Mary Berg of Edmonds, Wash. Two brothers preceded her in death.
A Mass of Christian burial was Friday at St. John's Catholic Church in Rochester. Burial was in Oakwood Cemetery.

Lyle Swenson, 83, of Spring Valley
Lyle Swenson, 83, of Spring Valley, died Monday evening, Dec. 1, 1997, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
He was born Aug. 23, 1914, in Hennepin County, Minn., the son of William and Hannah (Ness) Swenson. He was raised in Bloomfield Township, Fillmore County. He married Eleanor Vikse Jan. 15, 1936, and the couple made their first home on a farm in Bloomfield Township. In 1941 they moved to Grand Rapids, Mich., where Mr. Swenson was employed at Hayes Manufacturing and then Lear-Siegler, a jet airplane manufacturing company, until his retirement in 1976. They then moved to Bradenton, Fla., and then to Spring Valley in 1984.
He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley and was an avid fisherman and hunter.
He is survived by his wife; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Mary Ann of Grand Rapids; Mich.; one daughter, Eileen Swenson of Redlands, Calif.; two granddaughters; and three step-grandchildren.
The funeral was Friday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Spring Valley with the Revs. Jon Olson and Marlene Pankonin co-officiating. Burial in the church cemetery.

Eva Thompson, 96, of Mabel
Eva Thompson, 96, Mabel, died Sunday, Oct. 19, 1997, at the Green Lea Manor Nursing Home in Mabel, where she had resided since 1992.
Eva was born on Nov. 8, 1900, in rural Spring Grove to Jacob and Aleda (Sand) Amdahl. She attended school in Spring Grove. On March 10, 1921, she married Clifford Thompson in Mabel. He died in 1992. The couple farmed in Newburg Township until 1945, and then moved to Mabel. She was a member of Mabel First Lutheran Church and WELCA.
Eva is survived by a sister Lillie (Mrs. Cyrus) Thompson of the Twin Cities; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Clifford; two daughters, Ardis and Janis; four brothers, Burnett, James, Melvin and Irvin; and two sisters, Alice (Mrs. Alton) Harkness, and Viola (Mrs. William) Wiger.
Funeral services will be today (Thursday) at 1:30 p.m. at Mabel First Lutheran Church in Mabel, with the Rev. Lloyd Menke officiating. Burial will be in the Mabel Cemetery. Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Mengis Funeral Home in Mabel, and one hour prior to services at the church.
Millie V. Thompson, 86, Ostrander
Millie V. Thompson, 86, of Ostrander, a homemaker, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 1997, at Ostrander Care Center.
Millie V. Hanson was born Sept. 27, 1911, in rural LeRoy. On March 31, 1931, she married Arne Thompson in LeRoy. He died in 1988. Mrs. Thompson was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ostrander.
Survivors include three daughters, Arlys (Mrs. Larry) Terbeest of Spring Valley, Ilene (Mrs. David) Robb of Chaska, Minn., and Gail (Mrs. Dennis) Johnson of Stewartville; five sons, Harold of Caledonia, Glenn of Mankato, Vernon of Ostrander, Harlan of Stewartville and Raymond "Butch" of Chaska; 23 grandchildren; seven stepgrandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; 17 stepgreat-grandchildren; and a brother, Glen Hanson of Ostrander. A brother preceded her in death.
The funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ostrander with the Rev. Karen Grandall officiating. Burial will be in Ostrander Cemetery.

Elden Torgerson, 73, formerly of Lanesboro
Elden Torgerson, 73, of Hettinger, N.D., formerly of Lanesboro, died Thursday, Aug. 28, at West River Regional Medical Center in Hettinger.
Born July 29, 1924, in Adams County, N.D., he attended elementary grades at Ellefson School near Hettinger. The family later moved to Minnesota and after graduating from Lanesboro High School he helped put up barns for area farmers. In 1949, he returned to Hettinger where he farmed with his brothers. Torgerson enjoyed animals and farming. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Lanesboro.
There are no immediate survivors. Two brothers preceded him in death.
The funeral was Sunday, Aug. 31, 1997, at the Baptist Church in Hettinger, N.D., with the Rev. Jimmy Weber officiating. A service was held in Lanesboro on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with the Rev. Kerry Eversole officiating. Burial was in the Lanesboro Cemetery.

Carmona Trygstad, 78, of Mabel
Carmona Trygstad, 78, of Mabel, died suddenly on Tuesday, Dec. 16, 1997, at Tweeten Lutheran Health Care Center in Spring Grove.
Carmona Olson was born Dec. 9, 1919, in Newburg Township, Fillmore County, to Carl and Cora (Amdahl) Olson. She graduated from Mabel High School in 1938. On March 28, 1943, she married Kenneth Trygstad at Mabel First Lutheran Church. She operated the Tastee Freeze Drive-in in Mabel from 1951 until 1961 when she stayed home to devote time to their son Douglas. For many years she was the church librarian and the Sunday school superintendent. Her husband died June 12, 1996. Mrs. Trygstad was a lifelong member of the Mabel First Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Mabel VFW Auxiliary.
Survivors include a son, Douglas of Roseville, Minn.; a sister, Sharon (Mrs. Ron) Gillund of Fairfax, Iowa; a brother-in-law, Neil Trygstad of Mabel; a sister-in-law, Eunice Kyseth of Waterloo and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, a daughter, and two brothers, Manfield and Murrel.
The funeral was Saturday at First Lutheran Church in Mabel with the Rev. Lloyd Menke officiating. Burial was in Mabel Lutheran Cemetery.

Stella Tudahl, 79, formerly of rural Mabel
Stella Tudahl, 79, of Good Shepherd Lutheran Home in Rushford, died Friday at Community Memorial Hospital in Winona.
Stella Johnson was born April 14, 1918, in Choice. On Dec. 30, 1941, she married Carl B. Tudahl in Burr Oak, Iowa. He died April 17, 1983. Mrs. Tudahl was a lifelong resident of the Rushford area and cooked for the Coffee Shop and Home Cafe in Rushford and for numerous city functions and family events. She was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church and its Ladies Aid, the American Legion Auxiliary, and VFW Auxiliary in Rushford. She enjoyed dancing and traveling.
Survivors include a son, Carrol of Rushford; two daughters, Dianne (Mrs. Clifford) Hallum of Rushford and Anita (Mrs. Dale) Batchelder of Galesburg, Ill.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harlan Johnson of Rushford and Allen Johnson of Mabel; and a sister, Charlotte (Mrs. James) Slifke of Medford. Her husband and a brother preceded her in death.
The funeral was Monday at Rushford Lutheran Church with the Revs. Elmer Odland and Donald Block co-officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery.

W. Turner, 80, formerly of rural Harmony
Wayne Turner, 80, a former state legislator of Oregon, died October 3, 1997, in Portland.
He was born July 31, 1917, in Henrytown. Mr. Turner worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps during the 1930s and served aboard the U.S.S. Tennessee during the Second World War. He was a longtime resident of St. Helens and worked 42 years for the local Boise Cascade paper mill. During the 1950s, he served as president of local paper mill workers union. He retired from the company in 1982. Long active in Democratic politics, Mr Turner served 14 years as a state legislator representing Columbia County. He also was a charter member of the St. Helens Elks Lodge 1999. His interests revolved around his family. He also enjoyed fishing, travel and clam digging. His wife, Elaine, died in April after 50 years of marriage. A daughter, Susan Swardz, also preceded him in death. His sister, Anna Kampstra, of Harmony died two days after his death.
He is survived by his sons, Jim of Scappoose, Ore., Bob of Nehalem, Ore., and David of Beaverton, Ore.; daughters, Judy Stull of Ocean Shores, Wash., and Jeanne Palin of Scappoose, Ore.; son-in-law Jack Swardz of Washington state; brother Paul of Scappoose; sister Winnifred Milne of St. Helens; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services were held Oct. 7, at the St. Helens Elks Lodge. Entombment was in Columbia Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

Raynard J. Urness, 78, of Winona, died of cancer Saturday, Nov. 1, 1997, at his home.
He was born April 15, 1919, in Lanesboro. He married June Urness on Nov. 2, 1946, at Lanesboro. They had two sons, Robert of Winona, and Jerry of Owatonna, and six grandchildren.
The funeral was Tuesday at Central Lutheran in Winona with the Rev. Wade Davick officiating. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery in Winona.

Fabian VanSchaick, 61, brother of SV man
Fabian "Buck" G. VanSchaick, 61, of rural Plainview, brother of a Spring Valley man, died Wednesday, Sept. 10, 1997, of cancer at Olmsted Community Hospital in Rochester after a lengthy illness.
He was born May 27, 1936, in Rochester. He married Darlene R. Keckhafer on Jan. 31, 1962, in Rochester. She survives. Before moving to rural Plainview in 1972, the couple lived in Rochester and rural Rochester and in Goodhue. Before becoming disabled, he worked at Lakeside Foods in Plainview and then as a mechanic at Doane Grain and Zebel Trucking, both of Plainview. His wife is a licensed practical nurse at Olmsted Medical Center. He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Millville, an avid reader and woodworker and an accomplished musician playing violin, mandolin, guitar and banjo.
Surviving are his wife; his mother, Dorothy (Mrs. Ernest) Kranz of Millville; a daughter, Michelle L. (Mrs. Merritt) Stark Jr. of Minnesota City; one son, Michael of Plainview; four grandchildren; a sister, Joan "Suzie" (Mrs. Neil) Richards of Millville; and two brothers, Raymond of Spring Valley and Francis of Millville. He was preceded in death by a grandson and his father.
The funeral was Saturday at Grace United Church of Christ in Millville, the Rev. Virginia Pych officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery in Plainview.

Glen S. (Jeff) Walden, 72, of Ostrander, died Monday, Dec. 8, 1997, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Mr. Walden was born May 24, 1925, in Spring Valley to Halver and Letty (Johnson) Walden. He married Mary Kirch July 2, 1960. She died in 1992. Mr. Walden was a truck driver, a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ostrander and the American Legion.
Survivors include a daughter, Linda (Mrs. Jerry) Henry, of Hayfield, Minn.; four grandchildren; and two sisters, LaMoine (Mrs. Jerry) Lyman of Coon Rapids and Betty (Mrs. Bruce) Elliot of Spring Valley.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, and one brother.

George Warren, 75, of Spring Valley
George Warren, 75, of Spring Valley, a retired trucking firm owner, died Tuesday evening, Sept. 16, 1997, at Spring Valley Care Center after a length illness with cancer. He was born Feb. 22, 1922, at Lake City, the son of Frank and Alice (Mickow) Warren. He grew up in the Lake City-Mazeppa area and was a 1941 graduate of Mazeppa High School. He served in the Army during World War II. He farmed in the Mazeppa area until moving to Spring Valley in 1959, where he owned and operated his own trucking firm until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of the Grand Meadow American Legion for over 35 years.
Survivors include his wife, the former Winnifred Carlson of Zumbrota; two daughters, Mary (Mrs. Vic) Lee and RoxAnn Warren, both of Spring Valley; three grandsons; two great-granddaughters; and a sister, Veronica McGrath of Plainview. An infant son and two brothers preceded him in death.

Agnes K. Weber, 78, of Austin, died Thursday, Oct. 2, 1997, in St. Mark's Lutheran Home in Austin.
Agnes Lammers was born Dec. 3, 1918, in Avoca, Minn. She married Ed Weber on May 6, 1941, in Rose Creek and they were later divorced.
Surviving are a son; James D. Weber of Austin; a daughter, Mary (Mrs. Keith) Weber-Brown of Coon Rapids, Minn.; a grandson; two sisters, Ann (Mrs. Leonard "Shortie") Meyer of Austin; and three brothers, Frank of Spring Valley, Joe of Adams and Bernard of Rose Creek. She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Wade R. Welch, 51, formerly of Mabel
Wade R. Welch of Valley City, Calif., died on Friday, Oct. 3, 1997, in Minneapolis.
He was an installation site analyst and senior communications service technician for Lucent Technologies, where he had worked since 1965. He was working in Minneapolis temporarily when he suffered a heart attack.
Mr. Welch was born Aug. 29, 1945, in Spring Grove. He attended school in Mabel. He was a Vietnam veteran, having served there for four and one half years. He attended San Diego City College after getting out of the Navy.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Nancy; a daughter, Laura, and husband Rick Watkins; two grandchildren; four adopted grandchildren; his mother, Margeret McKenna of Florida; a sister, Michelle Sebranek of Wisconsin.; two brothers, Russell of Northfield and Adrey of Minneapolis. His father, Norman R. Welch, preceded him in death.
Memorial services were held in Valley City, Calif., on Oct. 11, 1997.

Marjorie L. (Ward) Weseman, 69 died Sunday, Sept. 14, 1997.
She is survived by three daughters, Wendy Bisping, Nancy Cameron and Kelly Seyid; sons-in-law, Niles, Jeff and Cheikh; grandchildren, Aleda and Davis; three surviving brothers, Donald and Howard Ward of Lanesboro, and Bill, and their families.
A celebration of her life was held at a remembrance service on Saturday, Sept. 20, at Cremation Society of Minnesota, Edina, Minn.
Lloyd M. Whipple, 78, father of SV woman
Lloyd M. Whipple, 78, of rural Zumbro Falls, a farmer and retired Mayo Clinic custodian, died Tuesday, Nov. 25, 1997, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester after a brief illness.
He was born May 27, 1919, in Wabasha County, rural Zumbro Falls, and lived in the area all his life. During World War II he served in the Army with Company E 135th Infantry. On Aug. 17, 1948, he married Pearl E. Roland at South Troy Wesleyan Church. Mr. Whipple was of the Wesleyan faith and was a member of Rochester American Legion Post 446 and the Zumbrota VFW.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Dennis L. of rural Zumbro Falls; a daughter, Diane E. Whipple of rural Spring Valley; three brothers, Floyd of Rochester, Lecil of rural Zumbro Falls and Allen of rural Rochester; and two sisters, Lavilla Hodge of San Diego and Lela Rietmann of rural Zumbro Falls. He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, four brothers and two sisters.
A memorial service was held Friday at South Troy Wesleyan Church with the Rev. Robert Lockert officiating. Burial in Pleasant Prairie Dale Cemetery on U. S. 63 North, with military graveside rites by the Zumbrota VFW.

Clarence 'Don' Williams, 56, area native
Clarence "Don" Williams, 56, of Fairfax, Minn., died suddenly on Saturday, Nov. 22, 1997, at Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester.
Clarence "Don" Verdon Williams was born on Sept. 18, 1941, in Spring Grove, to Gladys (Treagen) and Clarence Williams. He was baptized on Oct. 19, 1941, at South Fork Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Mabel. He was confirmed on June 19, 1955, at North Prairie Lutheran Church in Lanesboro. He and his family moved to Lanesboro when he was 5 years old. He attended high school there and went on to continue his education at the Austin Technical College, where he studied to be an agronomist.
On Oct. 20, 1962, he was united in marriage to Carol Wilbright in Lanesboro. The couple lived in Lanesboro for a few years before moving to Fairmont, where he worked at South Central Coop as an agronomist sales manager for eight years.
Mr. Williams was an active member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church. He enjoyed being "Santa's" helper, camping, golfing and being with his friends, especially his family.
He is survived by his wife Carol a son Steven and wife Patti of Waconia, Minn.; two daughters, Pamela Flitter and husband John of Winnebago, Minn.; Kathryn Maday and husband Tim of Hutchinson, Minn.; three grandchildren, Taylor and Alex Williams and Michaela Maday; his mother, Gladys Williams of Rochester, Minn.; one brother, Merlin Williams and wife Betty of Rochester, Minn.; five sisters, Marjorie Hoff and husband Norman of Mabel; Cassandra Hahn and husband Forrest of Oronoco, Minn.; Elvina Zielke and husband Jerry of Winnebago, Ill.; Gloria Tupy and husband Dale of Ankeny, Iowa; Karen Henrikson and husband Randy of Alexandria, Minn.; sister-in-law, Mary Hareldson and husband Herbert of Canton; and many nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, oldest son Jeffrey, and brother Everett.
Funeral services were held Wednesday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Fairfax, with interment
in the Crown Hill Cemetery in Preston.

Ruth M. Wolfgram, 99, once of Spring Valley
Ruth M. Wolfgram, 99, of Stewartville, a homemaker formerly of Spring Valley and Racine, died Thursday evening, Dec. 11, 1997, at Stewartvilla Care Center where she had resided since 1992.
Ruth Manila Eppard was born May 17, 1898, in Racine Township, Mower County and grew up on the family farm south of Racine. She attended District 66 grade school near Racine, graduated from Spring Valley High School in 1916 and then taught rural school at Hamilton until her marriage. On Aug. 28, 1918, she married Zara Wolfgram at her parents' home in Racine Township, and they farmed near Racine until moving to Spring Valley in 1947. Her husband worked for Mobil Oil Co. until his death in 1981. Mrs. Wolfgram was a member of Faith United Methodist Church in Spring Valley and later Racine United Methodist Church.
Survivors include a son, Philip of Spring Valley; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Two sons, a grandchild, a brother and two sisters preceded her in death.
The funeral was Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Racine with The Rev. Jean Dumas officiating. Burial was in Racine Salem Cemetery.

Viola Wood, 87, of Preston, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 1997, at the Preston Good Samaritan Care Center.
The former Viola Wood was born April 15, 1910, in Preston, the daughter of William D. and Bertha J. (Statler) Wood. She was raised and lived in the Preston area.
She is survived by one son, Arlynn Peirce of Searcy, Ark.; four grandchildren, Terry Peirce of Searcy, Ark, Allen and Randy Peirce, both of Boise, Idaho, and Lori (Mrs. Kenneth) McCabe of Chatfield; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother.
There will be a graveside memorial service at Crown Hill Cemetery in Preston held at a later date.
Her body was cremated.

Ryan C. Zahn, 25, of Chatfield, died Saturday mroning, Sept. 13, 1997, of injuries suffered in a one-car accident on Highway 80, four miles west of Fountain.
He was born Aug. 14, 1972, in Rochester, graduated from Chatfield High School in 1990 and from Winona State University in 1995 with a degree in computer science. He was a tester of new software for AIC at IBM in Rochester. He was a member of softball and pool leagues.
Survivors include his parents, Gary and Sharon Zahn, Chatfield; one brother, Nathan of Arlington, Texas; maternal grandparents, Justin and Hilda Johnson, Lanesboro. His paternal grandparents preceded him in death.
The funeral was held Wednesday, Sept. 17, at Chatfield Lutheran Church. Burial was in Chatfield Cemetery.

Zimmerman was formerly Dagna Oistad, daughter of the late Peter and Bertha Oistad (Johnson Bergan) of Harmony. She was born in Harmony in December of 1912. Dagna was baptized and confirmed at the Greenfield Lutheran Church at Harmony and a 1930 graduate of Harmony High School. Following graduation she took a course at a college in Minneapolis.
Later she was married to Wallace Zimmerman of Minneapolis and they made their home in the St. Louis Park area where Wallace was an athletic coach at the school. Wally died a few years ago and Dagna has been in a nursing home in Minneapolis near Eden Prairie crippled with arthritis for several years.
Memorial services were held Saturday, Sept. 20, 1997, at the nursing home where she lived. She is survived by one daughter, Mary Jo (Don) Dale of Eden Prairie; one son, John of Minneapolis and a so, Dr. Loren Vinge of Vancouver, British Columbia and several cousins in Harmony and several grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one sister, Elizabeth Oistad.
