Leona Alsaker

BENSON - Leona Alsaker, 80, of Benson died Saturday at the Homestead Place Care Center in Benson.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Benson, with the Rev. Arne Halbakken and the Rev. Roger Olness officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Jacobson-Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson and for one hour Tuesday before services at the church.
She was born Feb. 1, 1917, in Benson to Paul and Clara (Julyn) Alsaker. She graduated from Benson High School in 1936. She graduated from St. Olaf College as a teacher. She taught in Mora, then Benson. She also taught at Ann Arbor, Mich. In 1951, she received a library science degree from the University of Minnesota. She received her master's degree from San Francisco State University in 1960. She then became the college librarian at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. She taught methods of research and was promoted to full professorship at Luther College. She retired in 1982 and returned to Benson. She completed a course in Elderhostel in 1984. During the last months of her life, she lived at the Homestead Place.
She is survived by one brother, Alvord Alsaker of Minneapolis, and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Ethel F. Grahn

WILLMAR - Ethel F. Grahn, 75, of the Goldenrod community in rural Willmar, died Friday at Rice Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Calvary Lutheran Church in Willmar, with the Rev. Gary Mikkelson officiating. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home's 19th Avenue Chapel and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born Sept. 16, 1921, in Norway Lake Township, Kandiyohi County, to Bennie T. and Gina (Evenson) Freese. She attended rural school in Norway Lake Township. On June 28, 1944, she married Merle Grahn at South Lake Johanna Lutheran Church and they farmed in the Goldenrod community.
She is survived by her husband; children Betty (and Tom) White of Spicer, Mike (and Paula) Grahn of Willmar, Lori (and Brad) Howard of Kandiyohi, Lynae (and Bill) Dickerson of Willmar, and Paula (and Brian) Henrickson of Willmar; 15 grandchildren; sisters Bernice Kallevig and Minnie Zupke, both of Willmar; brothers Clifford Freese of Brooten and Joe (and Dorothy) Freese of Willmar; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and sister.
Violet B. Hochstein
MONTEVIDEO - Violet B. Hochstein, 84, of Montevideo, died Sunday at her home.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Montevideo, with the Rev. Leo Deitemeyer officiating. Burial will be in Terrace Lawn Memory Gardens.
Visitation will begin 4 p.m. Wednesday at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Montevideo, with a 7 p.m. prayer service and one hour prior to services at the church.

Alida B. Pederson

GLENWOOD - Alida B. Pederson, 92, of Glenwood, died Friday night at the Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Glenwood Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Arthur Montgomery officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 3 to 8 p.m. today at the Hoplin Funeral Chapel in Glenwood, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born Nov. 4, 1904, in Minnewaska Township to Carl and Margaret (Torguson) Pederson. She attended Glenwood Public Schools, spending her entire life in Glenwood. She worked at the West Central School of Ag in Morris and also many years at the Swisher Bakery in Glenwood.
She is survived by her sisters Blanche Rooney, Eleanor Lee and Helen (and Erv) Schluter all of Glenwood and Lorna Smedstad of Minneapolis; one sister-in-law; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, three brothers-in-law and a sister-in-law.
Allegra S. Berg
July 28, 1924 - July 12, 1997
GROVE CITY - Allegra Sara Berg, 72, of Grove City, died Saturday at Meeker County Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grove City.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born July 28, 1934, in Hosmer, S.D., to Emil and Sarah (Heib) Maisch. She graduated from Eureka High School in 1942. She then attended Texas University and graduated in 1948, with her degree as a registered nurse. On Jan. 25, 1950, she married Erwin Berg. She worked as a nurse in Britton, S.D., until the family moved to Murdock. She continued to work full-time and was an active member of the community. She served as Sunday school superintendent and church choir director at Calvary Lutheran Church in Murdock. She also worked for Rice Memorial Hospital as a surgical nurse for several years. After she quit nursing, she worked for the Murdock High School and Jack Frost Elevator as a bookkeeper.
She is survived by her husband; daughters Wendy (and Dennis) Witthus, Chrisara (and Allan) Remmel, both of Grove City, and Sandy Goldenstien of Spring Park; son Terry (and Sherry) Lassle of Fargo, N.D.; nine grandchildren; brothers Milbert Maisch of Los Angeles, Delano (and Katie) Maisch of Brackfield, Wis., William (and Linda) Maisch of Coronado, Calif., and John Maisch of Apple Valley, Calif.; sisters Lucille Schirmer and Roberta Anderson, both of San Diego, Calif.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.
Virgal M. Loher

MORRIS - Virgal Margaret Loher, 90, of Morris, died Thursday at the Villa of St. Francis in Morris.
Funeral services were Saturday at Assumption Catholic Church in Morris, with the Rev. Gerald Dalseth officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Morris.
Funeral arrangements were with Pederson Funeral Home in Morris.
She was born Oct. 22, 1906, in Stevens County, to Servatus and Matilda (Stahler) Loher. After graduating from Alberta High School, she attended St. Cloud State Teachers College, where she received her teaching certificate. She taught several years in various country schools in Stevens, Grant and Stearns counties, before moving to Willmar. She spent the next 25 years working in the Willmar school system. After her retirement, she continued living in Willmar until moving to Morris a couple years ago.
She is survived by her sister Celia Reardon of St. Cloud; many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and three sisters.
Agnes Mary Westphal
May 21, 1912 - July 11, 1997
OLIVIA - Agnes Mary Westphal, 85, of Olivia, died Friday at the Olivia Health Care Center in Olivia.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m. today at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia, with the Rev. Joe Steinbesser officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.
She was born May 21, 1912, in Gibbon to Frank and Mary (Schlagel) Bonine. On July 19, 1939, she married Chester Westphal in Stewart. Following their marriage they farmed in the Brownton area, later moving to Danube. After a farm accident with her husband in 1974 and his death in 1975, she left the farm and moved to Olivia. She moved into the Olivia Health Care Center in March of 1996.
She is survived by her sons Roger (and Marlene) Westphal of Andover, Eugene (and Elaine) Westphal and Dwayne (and Jeanette), both of Olivia; daughters Donna (and Kenny) Lalim of Grove City, and Sharon Hopman of Olivia; 21 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother Clarence Bonine of Winsted.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, three sisters, and an infant grandchild.
Ingelval Brovold
April 6, 1921 - July 11, 1997
GRANITE FALLS - Ingelval Suverin ``Butch'' Brovold, 76, of Granite Falls, died Friday at his home in Granite Falls.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. today at Granite Falls Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Bruce Kuenzel and Rev. Liza Simpson officiating. Burial will be in Bergen Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Granite Falls.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
Funeral arrangements are with Wing-Bain Funeral Home of Granite Falls.
He was born April 6, 1921, in Boyd to Bernhard and Emma (Iverson) Brovold. He grew up and attended country school in the Boyd area and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. On March 13, 1949, he married Charlotte Iverson in Belview. They made their home in Granite Falls, where he worked for a short time at the Jertson Elevator. He then worked for 37 years at the Minnesota Falls Cooperative Elevator, serving as assistant manager.
He is survived by his wife; sons Clayton Brovold of Polson, Mont., Roger (and Julie Hubert) Brovold of Stillwater, and Donald Brovold of Milan; brother Clinton Brovold of Granite Falls; sisters Jennie Peterson of Clarkfield and Mamie Amundson of Minneapolis; many nieces, nephews and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.
Lloyd Manfred Nelson
July 2, 1920 - July 10, 1997
BOYD - Lloyd Manfred Nelson, 78, of Boyd, died Thursday at his home in Boyd.
Funeral services will be 10 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church of Boyd, with the Rev. Glenda Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the church Cemetery, with military rites by Boyd American Legion.
He was born July 2, 1920, on a farm near Brook Park, Kanabec County, to Nils and Alma (Erickson) Nelson. He attended school in Clarkfield and Boyd. On Dec. 14, 1944, he entered the U.S. Army, serving two years in Japan. He was discharged on Dec. 4, 1946, at Fort Sheridan, Ill. When he returned home, he went to work on his own in the construction business. He then worked for AMPI for 25 years, retiring in 1982.
He is survived by sisters Mae Strand of Jackson and Ethel Leenerts of Boyd; brother Anton Nelson of Boyd; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and three brothers.
Stanley E. Hydeen
June 7, 1915 - July 10, 1997
LITCHFIELD - Stanley E. Hydeen, 82, of Litchfield, died Thursday at the Emmanuel Nursing Home in Litchfield.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. today at First Lutheran Church in Litchfield, with the Rev. Daniel Buendorf officiating. Burial will be in Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born June 7, 1915, in Atwater to Jonas and Lillie (Freelander) Hydeen. He graduated from Atwater High School in 1932. He attended Minnesota School of Business for one year and then worked in Willmar until 1937. At that time he returned to Atwater and entered into a partnership with his father, forming Joe Hydeen and Son Meat Market. On May 7, 1939, he married Helen Lund of Litchfield. They lived in Atwater until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942. He served in the European Theater during World War II in the ordinance department and was stationed in France and England. He was honorably discharged in 1945. They then lived in Dassel while he worked in the Darwin Bank from 1946 to 1949. In 1949 he entered into a partnership with his father-in-law, E.E. Lund, forming the car dealership of Lund-Hydeen Pontiac from 1949 to 1960. After that he worked for Auto Parts Inc. for five years and then for Norwest Bank for 15 years, retiring in 1980. In 1954 their son Steven died of leukemia and in 1958 they adopted their daughter Lee Ann. He became a resident of the Emmanuel Home in 1995.
He is survived by his daughter Lee Ann Hydeen of Wheaton; son Tom (and Carla) Hydeen of Orange City, Iowa; three grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1997 and son Steven.
Norman Liestman

PAYNESVILLE - Norman E. Liestman, 76, of Paynesville died Friday at the St. Cloud Veterans Administration Medical Center.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Paynesville with the Rev. Ric Koehn and the Rev. Richard Liesen officiating. Burial will be in the Ebenezer Cemetery in Eden Lake Township, Stearns County, with full military honors provided by Paynesville American Legion Post 271.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Daniel-Anderson Funeral Home in Paynesville and one hour before services at the church.
He was born Nov. 11, 1920, in Eden Lake Township to Frank and Agusta (Wagner) Liestman. He grew up on the family farm and attended rural school in District 205 in Eden Lake Township. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He married Aurelia ``Rae'' Thielen on Dec. 3, 1996, in Paynesville. He owned and operated Liestman Construction in Paynesville for 30 years, retiring in 1994.
Survivors include his wife; brothers Lawrence (and Bernice) of Paynesville, Arlie (and Marjorie) of Osseo, Delmar (and Donna) of Princeton, Marvin (and Mary) Tomah, Wis.; sisters Amanda Vadnais of St. Paul, Mrs. George ``Florence'' Potter of Paynesville; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Elinor Kreps

WILLMAR - Elinor Kreps, 75, of Willmar died Wednesday at Rice Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Evangelical Free Church, with the Rev. Todd Olson, the Rev. Dave Hannig, the Rev. Bailey Anderson and the Rev. Kenny King officiating. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery in Willmar.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home's 19th Avenue chapel and one hour before services at the church.
She was born March 3, 1922, in Holland Township, Kandiyohi County, to Trieko and Jenny (Ledeboer) Slagter. She attended Prinsburg Christian School. She and Gerald Kreps were married Oct. 20, 1942. They lived in Prinsburg and Willmar.
She is survived by her husband; children Dallas (and Lois) Kreps of Grapevine, Texas, Rodney (and Lori) Kreps of Willmar, Sherry (and Arthur) Miller of Adrian and Larry (and Kathy) Kreps of Mankato; 12 grandchildren; sisters and brothers Alma Stifter of Minneapolis, Ethel Slagter of Roseland, Martha (and Edward) Dykstra of Prinsburg, Harvey (and Dorothy) Slagter of Willmar, Ted (and Lorraine) Slagter, Forrest (and Marilyn) Slagter and Stanley (and Joyce) Slagter, all of Prinsburg, Geneva Bonnema (and fiance Gordon Grussing) of Clara City, Karen (and John) Taatjes of Raymond, Gary (and Barbara) Slagter of Danube and Sylvia Slagter of New London; several nieces and nephews.

Eleanor Ulrickson

ALBERT LEA - Eleanor Marie Nellis Ulrickson, 75, of Albert Lea, died June 30.
Funeral services were held July 3 in Albert Lea at Bonnerup Funeral Service Chapel with the Rev. Wayne Halvorson officiating. Burial was in Hartland Cemetery in Hartland.
She was born July 7, 1921, in Honey Creek, Iowa, to Joseph and Blanche (Haggie) Kermeen. She came to Minnesota in 1937 and lived in Freeborn County since 1941.
Survivors include sisters-in-law Marjorie Barber and Dorothy (and Don) Kubesh, all of Olivia; Margaret (and Sandy) Hanson of Sacred Heart.
Lloyd Priebe

CLARA CITY - Lloyd Marvin Priebe, 71, of Clara City, died Wednesday at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church of Clara City, with the Rev. Mark Jamison officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. today, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home of Clara City.
He was born April 19, 1926, in Chippewa County to George and Josephine (Dieken) Priebe. He attended schools in rural Chippewa County, graduating from District 23 in 1940. On Sept. 27, 1953, he married Frances Lucille Tweter in Montevideo. They raised four children on the family farm in Stoneham Township. He was a president of the Immanuel Lutheran Church congregation. He also served on the Stoneham Township Board and the Chippewa County Zoning Board.
He is survived by his wife; children Deanne Priebe of Omaha, Neb., David Priebe of Salem, Ore., Kent (and Melanie) Priebe of Maynard and Karen (and Rick) Bisson of Stillwater; two grandchildren; sister Dorothy Boike of Clara City; five nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Phyllis Peterson

Rudolph Thonvold
ERWIN, S.D. - Word has been received of the death of Rudolph H. Thonvold, 79, of Erwin, S.D., on Sept. 27.
He was born in Baudette, attended school in Willmar and moved to Erwin after World War II.
He is survived by two sons, three sisters, including Marion Rime of Spicer; two brothers, including Lloyd Thonvold of Sunburg; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
