John Caspers
Aug. 8, 1914 - Oct. 16, 1997
CLARA CITY - John William Caspers, 83, of Clara City, died Thursday at Clara City Care Center.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Bethany Reformed Church in Clara City with the Rev. Michael Scott officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Harvey Anderson Clara City Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born Aug. 8, 1914, in Crate Township, Chippewa County, to William and Marie (Eckhoff) Caspers. He attended country school. On Feb. 21, 1939, he married Hilda Ammermann. They farmed in Clara City until 1959, when they built and operated the Clara City Motel. They owned and operated the Uptown Motel in Alexandria from 1967 to 1974, when they returned to Clara City where he was employed by Furniture Fair.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Carol Cakebread of Clara City; three grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; sisters Katherine Muller of Clara City, Lena Barney of Clara City; and brothers George Caspers of Clara City and Marvin (and Joan) Caspers of Clara City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, two sisters and a son-in-law.

Anita Erickson
WILLMAR - Anita Erickson, 76, of Willmar, formerly of Kerkhoven, died Sunday at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar.
Funeral arrangements are pending with Harvey Anderson Kerkhoven Funeral Home.

Lowell Hultgren
RAYMOND - Lowell Hultgren, 79, rural Raymond, died Monday at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Madelyn (Jongquist) Hultgren
Dec. 13, 1920 - Jan. 28, 2001
ST. LOUIS PARK -- Madelyn Hultgren, 80, of St. Louis Park, died Sunday.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Aldersgate United Methodist Church, 3801 Wooddale Ave. S., St. Louis Park. Burial will be private.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at Enga-White Funeral Chapel (952-929-7876), and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born Dec. 13, 1920, in Minneapolis, to Pearl (Nelson) and Henry Jongquist. Her family moved to Willmar where she grew up.
She is survived by her son Dennis of St. Louis Park; daughter Carol Dean Ricci (and Tom Casey) of Hoboken, N.J.; two granddaughters; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband Russell.

Karna R. Evenson
ST. LOUIS PARK - Karna R. Evenson, 40, of St. Louis Park, formerly of Atwater, died unexpectedly Monday morning at her home.

Dennis V. Stern
Oct. 3, 1955 - Oct. 18, 1997
GROVE CITY - Dennis Verl Stern, 42, of Grove City, died Saturday at his home in Grove City.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church in Litchfield, with the Rev. Mary Ludvigsen officiating. Burial will be in Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield, and one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born Oct. 3, 1955, in Litchfield to Verl and Marlene (Curtiss) Stern. He attended and graduated from Litchfield Senior High School in 1973. He worked as a heavy equipment operator.
He is survived by his wife Cyndi of Grove City; daughters Rebecca and Tiah Stern, both of Grove City; son Rhett Stern-Lundgren of Oak Harbor, Wash.; parents Marlene and Stan Radunz of Darwin; sister Kathleen (and Stephon) Coughlin of Minneapolis; brothers Todd (and Julie) Stern of Darwin and Eric Radunz of Brainerd; father and mother-in-law Roger (and Joy) Erickson of Bird Island; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, one brother and his grandparents.

Dolores M. Lentz
RENVILLE - Dolores M. Lentz, 69, of Renville, died Monday at the North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale following a sudden illness.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Renville, with the Rev. Mark Bartsch officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Renville.
Visitation will be 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Renville and one hour prior to services at the church.

Marvin Degner
Dec. 13, 1936 - Oct. 19, 1997
COSMOS - Marvin Maurice Degner, 60, of Cosmos, died Sunday at Hutchinson Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Peace Lutheran Church in Cosmos, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Hughes Funeral Home in Cosmos and one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born Dec. 13, 1936, in Hutchinson to Frank and Luella (Nielsen) Degner. He grew up in the Hector area. On June 28, 1958, he married Elizabeth Goetzman. He worked with Degner Construction and was a union brick layer for 30 years. He lived in Cosmos and was a member of Peace Lutheran Church and a member of the International Brick Layers Union. He had served on the Cosmos City Council, Cosmos Fire and Ambulance Service, and as a part time officer in Cosmos.
He is survived by sons Michael (and Reneta Larson) Degner of Cosmos, and Dale (and Kate) Degner of Pennock; six grandchildren; one great-grandson; brothers Ronald (and Yvonne) Degner of Franklin, Donald (and Pat) Degner of Virginia Beach, Va., and Larry (and Nadine) Degner of Lake Lillian; sister Dorothy (and Lylon) Niemann of Hector; many nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Mary in infancy, two brothers and one sister.

Gary Dean Westby
Dec. 5, 1945 - Oct. 15, 1997
SPICER - Gary Dean Westby, 51, of rural Spicer, died Wednesday as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Paynesville.
Funeral services will be 3 p.m. Sunday at the New London-Spicer High School gymnasium with the Rev. Richard Krasky officiating. Burial will be in Lake Florida Mission Cemetery, rural Spicer.
Visitation will be noon to 3 p.m. at the high school. Funeral arrangements are with Johnson Funeral Home of New London. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials.
He was born Dec. 5, 1945, in Granite Falls, to Elmer and Helen (Clausen) Westby. He lived in Minneapolis, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1963. He was a 1967 graduate of St. Cloud State University with a degree in psychology. He served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War. He attended the University of Minnesota in St. Paul. He was a conservation officer at Fort Snelling in 1976, later transferring to International Falls for two years. On Nov. 10, 1978, he married Cynthia Medina in Minneapolis. They lived in Missoula, Mont., for a short time before moving to Minneapolis. They then moved to Owatonna and, in 1988, moved to Spicer where he was a conservation officer in the area. He helped with re-establishing the Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center, led the ``adopt-a-warden'' project in Indonesia, and was a member of New London American Legion, Willmar Eagles and Minnesota Conservation Officer Association.
He is survived by his wife; sons Brian, Ben, Adam, Stephen; daughter Andrea; brother Ron (and Sandy) of Duluth; sister Janet Higgens of Aitkin; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Violet Christianson
MONTEVIDEO - Violet Christianson, 87, of Montevideo died Friday at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are pending with the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.

Ann Mehlhouse
Oct. 6, 1903 - Oct. 17, 1997
MONTEVIDEO - Ann Rose Mehlhouse, 94, of Montevideo, died Friday at the Luther Haven Nursing Home of Montevideo.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church of Montevideo, with the Rev. Alvin G. Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Montevideo.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Wing-Bain Funeral Home and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born Oct. 6, 1903, in Moyer Township, Swift County, to Rudolph and Minnie (Kohler) Janke. She attended District 2 Grade School near Holloway. On Aug. 17, 1926, she married Louie Mehlhouse. She worked for several years at Swift & Company in Montevideo. She became a resident of the nursing home in June of 1993.
She is survived by her daughters RuthAnn (and Donald) Johnson of Milbank, S.D., and Betty Burgess (and good friend Elwood Moseng) of rural Montevideo; nine grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; 11 great great-grandchildren; sisters Millie Janke and Leona Janke, both of Appleton, and Rose Wallien of Montevideo.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1979, three brothers, one sister and two great-grandchildren.

Barbara Lawson
Aug. 24, 1938 - Oct. 16, 1997
BUFFALO LAKE - Barbara Ann Lawson, 59, of Buffalo Lake, died Thursday at the Hutchinson Community Hospital.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Sunday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Buffalo Lake, with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the church and one hour prior to services at the church.
Funeral arrangements are with Hughes Funeral Home.
She was born Aug. 24, 1938, in Hinckley to Hjalmer and Elsie (Freeburg) Hokanson. She grew up in the Hinckley Area where she graduated from high school. On Aug. 24, 1957, she married Walter Teich. On Feb. 18, 1995, she married Roger Lawson. She was very active in the community and was recently working as a Real Estate Appraiser.
She is survived by her husband; daughters Rhonda (and Frank) Hickey of St. Paul and Nancy (and Lee) Kaping of Litchfield; three grandchildren; brothers Hjalmer (and Ramona) Hokanson of Watkins, Allen (and Betty) Hokanson of Hinckley, Donald (and Mary) Hokanson of Litchfield and Clyde Hokanson; sisters Marilys (and Rex) Meier of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., and Alice (and Dick) Curry of Cloverdale; many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and a niece.

Wilbur Martin Johnson
June 23, 1909 - Oct. 18, 1997
WILLMAR - Wilbur Martin Johnson, 88, of Willmar and formerly of the Lake Lillian area, died Saturday at the Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar.
Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the K-M Funeral Home in Lake Lillian, with the Rev. Mark Little officiating. Burial will be in the Lake Lillian Community Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
He was born June 23, 1909, in Lake Lillian to August and Signe (Nyberg) Johnson. He worked for Chicago Bridge and Iron County for 20 years, where he traveled all over the United States and in several foreign countries. On March 15, 1951, he married Eva Daley. She died in December of 1986, in Clinton, La. He moved shortly thereafter to the Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar, where he lived until his death.
He is survived by his sister Vivian (and Stanley) Minsaas of Granite Falls; sister-in-law Bernice Johnson of Golden Valley; many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, three brothers and one sister.

Harry F. Lachelt
Aug. 19, 1933 - Oct. 17, 1997
MILWAUKEE - Harry F. Lechelt, 64, of Milwaukee and formerly of Glenwood, died Friday at the Marian Franciscan Center in Milwaukee.
There will be a gravesite committal service at 3 p.m. Tuesday at West Lake Amelia Cemetery in Villard, with the Rev. Andrew Hermodson-Olsen officiating.
He was born Aug. 19, 1933, in Glenwood to Harry W. and Elizabeth (Miller) Lachelt. He served in the United States Army, receiving his honorable discharge in 1958. He worked for the Milwaukee Road and the Soo Line Railroads for 44 years as a signalman. He retired back to Glenwood in September of 1995, living in Central Court Condominiums at Central Square. In October of 1996, he moved back to Wauwatosa, Wis. where he worked part-time for a short line railroad, until his illness.
He is survived by cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Arlo Berg
MONTEVIDEO - Arlo Berg, 75, of Montevideo, died Sunday afternoon at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital.
Funeral arrangements are pending with the Wing-Bain Funeral Home of Montevideo.

L. Elizabeth Thomton
NEW HOPE - L. Elizabeth Thomton, 93, of New Hope and formerly of the Montevideo area, died Wednesday at North Memorial Hospital in Robbinsdale.
Graveside services will be 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Montevideo, with the Rev. Warren Broughton officiating.
Funeral arrangements are with the Wing-Bain Funeral Home of Montevideo.

Marvin E. Johnson
BENSON - Marvin E. Johnson, 84, of Benson, died Saturday morning at the Swift County-Benson Hospital.
Funeral services are tentatively set for 1 p.m. Thursday at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Benson.
Funeral arrangements are pending with the Jacobson-Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.

Hilda Jean Denton
April 1, 1933 - Oct. 18, 1997
RAYMOND - Hilda Jean Denton, 64, of Raymond, died Saturday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Christian Reformed Church in Raymond, with burial in Fairview Cemetery in Raymond.
A closed casket visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Tri-County Funeral Home in Prinsburg.
She was born April 1, 1933, in rural Renville County to George and Amy (Ryks) Ruschen. She attended country schools in Renville County. On Jan. 31, 1958, she married Vern Denton in Raymond. The family lived in the Raymond area their entire married life. She worked at Willmar Regional Treatment Center as a food service worker for 22 years, retiring in 1995.
She is survived by her husband; daughters Veronica Denton of Raymond, Vickie (and Brian) Everitt of Mexico, Mo., and Nancy Denton of Raymond; two grandons; sisters Anna (and Emil) Urban of Willmar, Delores (and Anthony) Schroeder of Raymond and Grace (and Eugene) Zeller of Clara City; brother John G. (and Darla) Ruschen of Renville.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the Rice Hospice or the American Cancer Society.
