OLIVIA - Bernice C. Houdek, 86, of Olivia died Saturday at the Olivia Healthcare Center.
Her funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia with the Rev. Arthur S. Thomas officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Bechyn.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia, with a 5:15 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. prayer service, and from 9 to 10:15 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
She was born Sept. 12, 1913, in rural Olivia to John and Annie (Kodet) Zetah. She attended rural school. On June 30, 1942, she married George Houdek at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bechyn. She worked as a restaurant cook for many years.
She is survived by sons Al (and Darlene) of Olivia, Tom (and Betty) of Fort Worth, Texas, and John of Lake Charles, La.; sisters Marge Fesenmaier of Olivia and Ellen Nerud of Minneapolis; brother Dick (and Ginny) Zetah of Renville; 10 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son, Phillip, and a grandson.
Elmer John Butler
April 23, 1909 - April 21, 2000
WILLMAR - Elmer John Butler, 90, of Willmar died Friday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
His funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Covenant Church in Willmar with the Rev. Dan Johnson officiating. Burial will be in Cloverleaf Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
He was born April 23, 1909, in Mamre Township, Kandiyohi County, to Oscar and Hulda (Freeberg) Butler. They moved to Cass County in 1912. In 1920, they returned to Mamre Township, where Elmer finished his education at District 15 North Kandiyohi County. He worked as a carpenter until entering the U.S. Army. He served 3_ years with the 81st Infantry in the Pacific Theatre during World War II, and earned the Bronze Star.
On Dec. 27, 1943, he married Olive Johnson in Willmar. After he was discharged from the Army in 1945, they lived in Willmar. He worked as a carpenter until he retired in 1974. They lived at Lake Andrew from 1974 to 1997.
He was a member of First Covenant Church in Willmar and the Willmar American Legion.
He is survived by his wife; children DiAnne (and Peter) Rolfzen of Fargo, N.D., Dennis (and Patty) of Willmar and Jerry (and Laur'ae) of Spicer; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sister Florence (and George) Anderson of Twin Falls, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister and two grandchildren.
Evelyn T. Freeberg

WILLMAR - Evelyn T. Freeberg, 95, of Willmar died Saturday at the Ashwood Health Care Center.
Her funeral will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Svea Lutheran Church with the Rev. William Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home and at the church prior to services Tuesday. Memorials are preferred to Svea Lutheran Church, the Diabetes Society or the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
She was born Jan. 13, 1905, near Blomkest to Carl E. and Anna J. (Lindquist) Nelson. She grew up in Svea and attended District 55 School.
On March 14, 1928, she married John Euling. The lived Dallas, Ore., for 6_ years. John died in 1942. She returned to Svea. On Nov. 1, 1949, she married Algot J. Freeberg. She was employed at the Blossom Bakery, and for 29 years worked at the Town Talk Bakery before retiring in 1972. Algot died in 1976. She was a member of Svea Lutheran Church Ladies Circle, the Bible Study Group, Eastern Star and the Senior Citizens Club.
She is survived by stepchildren Howard (and Ruby) Freeberg of Willmar, Loren (and Jean) Freeberg of McGregor; Ann Bosch of Atwater; a grandson; two great-grandchildren; several stepgrandchildren; and stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; daughter, Annette Bosch; stepdaughter Ardella Myers; two brothers; a son-in-law; and two grandsons.
James McGill

WILLMAR - James Wallace "Jim" McGill, 74, of Willmar died Saturday at his home.
His funeral will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Ron Burke of Calvary Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be Wednesday afternoon at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home, and Wednesday from 8 a.m. until the time of services.
He was born April 13, 1926, in Fargo, N.D., to Frank and Edith (Rosel) McGill. He grew up in the Moorhead area, graduating from McGrath High School in 1944. From July 19, 1944, to March 9, 1946, he served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a salesman for Witte Ford in Hector for 50 years.
He was a member of the Willmar VFW, the Military Order of the Cooties, where he served as Fifth District commander and grand commander, the Willmar American Legion, the Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Loyal Order of Moose.
He survived by his life companion Jeanette Hallbom of Willmar; children Frank (and Roxanne) of Mound, Sharron (and Bruce) Johnson of Burnsville, James of Mound, Bradley (and Lorna) of Coon Rapids, and Walter (and Rene) of Savage; nine grandchildren; sister Faye (and Clem) Savina of Eden Prairie, and Margaret (and Lorna) Nelson of West Point, Ind.; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a grandson.
Stanley E. Broin

WILLMAR - Stanley E. Broin, 72, of Willmar died Friday at Rice Memorial Hospital.
His funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Sandy Hanawalt and the Rev. Roger Hanson officiating.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to services Tuesday at the church.
He was born March 10, 1928, in Wannamingo to Melvin and Sylvia (Morkre) Broin. He grew up in the Wannamingo area and graduated from Wannamingo High School in 1946.
On Sept. 24, 1950, he married Betty Kelsey at Bethany Lutheran Church in Nevis. They lived in Nevis, where he owned and operated Stan's Gateway. They moved to Willmar in 1965 and he worked at Jennie-O Foods until retiring in 1991. He also worked at Wal-Mart from 1991 until the time of his death.
Betty died in December 1968. On Sept. 5, 1970, he married Iola North in Willmar.
He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. He served as a Nevis volunteer firefighter, Civic and Commerce, on a school board, the Eagle Lake Association, the Rice Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was founder of the Willmar Cancer Society.
He is survived by wife Iola; children Becky Ernst of Nevis, Beatta (and Mike) Schultz of St. Paul, Kari (and Grant) Ross of Brooklyn Park, Gordon (and Rita) Goodmund of Portland, Ore., Gary Goodmund of Portland, Ore., and Bonnie (and Dennis) Wrobleski of Willmar; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, his parents, a brother and two grandsons.
Rev. Dale Gilhoi

GRANITE FALLS - The Rev. Dale Gilhoi, 64, of Granite Falls died Saturday at his home following a yearlong illness.
His funeral will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Granite Falls Lutheran Church.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wing-Bain Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Wednesday at the church.
He was born July 2, 1935, in Watson to Arthur and Georgia (Moe) Gilhoi. As a child, he moved with his family to Stewart. He graduated from Stewart High School in 1953, St. Olaf College in Northfield in 1957 and Luther Seminary in St. Paul in 1967. He was ordained as a Lutheran minister in 1979.
On Nov. 25, 1983, he married Sharon Howell. He served parishes in Selden, N.Y., Hanover, Dalbo, Minneapolis, Springfield and Walnut Grove. He most recently served at Lac qui Parle Lutheran Church in rural Dawson. He also had careers in music, travel and sales. He was an Eagle Scout.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Christi; son Jason; brother Robert (and Sue); five stepchildren and their spouses; and nine stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Russell Carlson

WILLMAR - Russell H. Carlson, 90, of Willmar, died Wednesday at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar.
His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Mamrelund Lutheran Church in Pennock with the Rev. Mona Anderson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar and for one hour prior to the services at the church.
He was born Sept. 28, 1909, in Mamre Township, Kandiyohi County, to Carl and Agnes (Hultgren) Carlson. He grew up on the family farm near Pennock and attended District 15 South School.
He married Chellog Huseby on June 19, 1934 at the West Norway Lake Lutheran Church parsonage. They farmed near Pennock until retiring in 1969 and moving to Willmar. He served on the Mamre Township Board, 15 South School Board and also as the county assessor. He was a lifetime member of Mamrelund Lutheran Church where he was on the church council and in the choir. He moved to Bethesda Heritage in December 1998.
He is survived by three children, Kenneth (and Virginia) Carlson of Downey, Calif., Curtney (and Louise) Carlson of Pennock and Doris (and Charles) Hagen of Sunburg; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1992, an infant son, five brothers and two sisters.
Hazel Hanson

WILLMAR - Hazel Elvira Adeline Hanson, 91, of El Paso, Texas, died Tuesday at home following a brief illness.
Her funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery near Blomkest.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the funeral home.
She was born Feb. 26, 1909, in Lake Lillian Township, Kandiyohi County, to Fred and Kathryn (Zobel) Lindquist. She grew up in Roseland and attended rural schools.
She married Lee Hanson on Feb. 16, 1929, and they lived on a farm in Lake Lillian Township. They moved to Minnetonka in 1960 and to El Paso in 1985.
She is survived by her husband, Lee of El Paso; two sons, Dennis of El Paso and Dale (and Carol) of Eden Prairie; three sisters, Myrtle Kemnitz of Olivia, Delores (and Lyndon) Abraham of Olivia and Alice (and Jack) Decker of New Ulm; two brothers, Marvin Lindquist of Mesa, Ariz., and Wallace (and Myra) Lindquist of Olivia; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and two sisters.
Della Senkyr

OLIVIA ‹ Della J. Senkyr, 94, of Olivia, died Friday at the Olivia Healthcare Center.

She was born Dec. 26, 1905, in Henryville Township, rural Olivia, to Frank and Jenny (Zetah) Sokolik. She graduated from Olivia High School.
She married Jack Senkyr on June 28, 1927, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bechyn. They farmed near Bechyn and moved to Olivia when they retired. She worked as a nurse's aide at the Olivia Healthcare Center for many years.
She is survived by two children, Glen Senkyr of Redwood Falls and Jan (and Mike) McNally of Bloomington; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, daughter-in-law Lois Senkyr and one sister.
Julene Howard

MONTEVIDEO ‹ Julene Ellen Howard, 61, of Montevideo, died Thursday at the Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital.
Her funeral will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Montevideo with the Rev. Michael Briggs officiating. Burial will be in Terrace Lawn Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be Monday afternoon and evening with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.
She was born Nov. 18, 1938, in Chippewa County to William and Marie (Uttermark) Groothuis. She grew up on farms near Clara City and Montevideo and graduated from Montevideo High School in 1956.
She married Marvin "Pete" Howard on Nov. 28, 1958, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Clara City. They lived in Montevideo and she worked for 13 years at Innovex. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Eagles Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Pete; two daughters, Lori (and James) Schmaedeka of Clara City and Angela (and Gary) Quistad of Andover; four grandchildren; two brothers, Leo Groothuis of Fargo and Bob Groothuis of Minneapolis; six sisters, Mary Kawell of Wheaton, Ill., Eleanor Stager of Clara City, Lola Kranz of Montevideo, Arleen Bussian of West Salem, Wis., Carol Groothuis of Minneapolis and Ednabelle Kuehl of Moorhead and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one sister.
Evelyn Anderson

WILLMAR - Evelyn Anderson, 101, of Willmar, died Thursday at Bethesda Heritage Center in Willmar.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Covenant Church in Willmar with the Rev. Dan Johnson officiating.
Visitation will be from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.
She was born April 18, 1899, in Willmar to Sigurd and Emma (Erickson) Berkness. She graduated from Willmar High School, then taught school for one year. She then worked for the railroad.
She married Reuben E. Anderson on March 11, 1921, in Willmar. She then worked for her husband at Anderson Meat Market and also with her mother at Berkness Millinery. For several years, she made doughnuts in a shop attached to her home to sell at the meat market. When the store closed, she went to work for Butters Style Center. Reuben died in 1965. She retired in 1979 at the age of 80.
She was a member of First Covenant Church and was active in Dorcas Society and the Covenant Women.
She is survived by grandson Stephen (and Suzanne) Sands of Sartell; granddaughter Evelyn (and Ricardo Hackney) Sands of Plymouth; and four great-grand children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; daughter, Ruth Sands; a granddaughter; two sisters; and a brother.
Leslie R. Vien

CLARKFIELD - Leslie Roger Vien, 86, of Clarkfield, died Saturday at Chippewa County-Montevideo Hospital.
His funeral will be at 3 p.m. today at Clarkfield Lutheran Church with the Rev. Terry Brandt officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Arrangements are with Lynner Funeral Home.
He was born Nov. 16, 1913, in Normania Township, Yellow Medicine County, to Ludvig and Ameila (Dotseth) Vien.
On Sept. 11, 1936, he married Ida Hatlen, and they lived in Clarkfield. He was employed as a grain elevator operator by Clarkfield Farmers Elevator.
He delivered Meals on Wheels many years.
He is survived by his wife; children Beverly (and Bill) Judge, Claire (and Jim) Brown, Roger (and Diane) Vien, Doreen (and Ron) Christensen, Inez Jessen, Lori (and Ken) Haukos, Chuck (and Vicki) Vien; 17 grandchildren; great-grandchildren; sisters Margret Martin, Violet (and Orville) Damann, Jean (and Ed) Lundstrom and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.
William J. Fritzlar

SAUK CENTRE - William J. Fritzlar, 92, of Sauk Centre, died Saturday at St. Michael's Nursing Home in Sauk Centre.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at Zion Lutheran Church in Sauk Centre with the Rev. R.E. Bloemker officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery in Sauk Centre.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre.
He is survived by three daughters, including Walda (and Lars) Anderson of Belgrade, Lorraine (and Robert) Erickson of New London; one son; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Dora (Schwanke) Fritzlar, one son, four brothers, four sisters and one great-grandchild.
Richard 'Dick' Hagen

RENVILLE - Richard "Dick" Hagen, 72, of Renville died Monday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at First Lutheran Church in Renville with the Rev. Lee Hallstrom officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Renville.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. today at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Renville, and one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born Sept. 22, 1927, in Renville to Glynn and Malvina (Olson) Hagen. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1945-47, returning to Renville where he graduated from high school in 1947.
On Sept. 18, 1949, he married Betty Carey in Renville. They lived in Minneapolis where he was employed by Burlington Northern Railroad. In 1958, they moved to Chicago where he continued employment with Burlington Northern and REA Trucking. They returned in 1976 to Renville where they operated his parents' grocery store until the early 1980s. He was employed by Southern Minnesota Beet Sugar Cooperative until the late 1990s.
He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Renville VFW and Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his sons Chris (and Sue) of Chicago, Richard of Big Lake, Paul (and Lori) of Eden Prairie; daughter Carey (and John) Hodapp of Willmar; brother Tom Hagen of Sacred Heart and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife on Nov. 23, 1998, and two brothers.
