Mearl I. Moen
March 11, 1916 - June 20, 2000
GLENWOOD - Mearl Irene Moen, 84, of Glenwood died Tuesday at Glacial Ridge Hospital in Glenwood.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in Swift Falls with the Rev. Pari Bailey officiating. Burial will be in Rolling Forks Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hoplin Funeral Chapel in Glenwood, and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born March 11, 1916, in Gilchrist Township, Pope County, to Ole and Lena (Erickson) Solbrekken. She attended District 2 Country School, Gilchrist Township, through the eighth grade.
On April 15, 1939, she married Earl Dennis Moen in Gilchrist Township, where they farmed 54 years. They retired to Ridgewood Villa in Glenwood in 1998.
She was a member of District 2 School Mothers Club, Church Ladies Aid and was a Sunday School teacher.
She is survived by her husband; son Lowell Moen of Benson; daughter Karen (and Gary) Theis of Belgrade, Marsha (and Paul) Hanson of Brooten; six grandchildren and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers and six sisters.

Florence L. Berry
March 16, 1907 - March 24, 2000
SPICER - Florence L. Berry, 93, of Spicer, formerly of Willmar, died March 24 at Glen Oaks Care Center in New London.
Family graveside services were conducted March 29 in Forest Hill Cemetery in Norwood.
Her memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Steven Bielenberg officiating. Arrangements are with Harvey Anderson Funeral Home of Willmar.
She was born March 16, 1907, in Danube to Edmund and Emma (Kremin) Grunert. She was a graduate of Danube High School and St. Cloud College. She taught at Central High Norwood-Young America School.
On Aug. 10, 1937, she married Russell Berry in Spicer. They lived in the Norwood area, moving in 1939 to Granite Falls, where they purchased the bakery. Russell died April 16, 1940. She moved to Montevideo where she was employed by Sears Roebuck. She continued her employment by Sears when she moved to Willmar. She retired in 1969, spending time in Minneapolis and later in the Spicer area.
She is survived by her nieces Dorothy (and John) Lasher of Marshall, Shirley A. (and Dennis) Gaarder of Chaska; and grandnieces JoEllen Saylor of Edina and Nancy Nissen of Edina.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one brother and one sister.

Karen A. Nelson
April 3, 1942 - June 18, 2000
LITCHFIELD - Karen Ann Nelson, 58, of Litchfield died Sunday at Meeker County Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Litchfield with the Rev. Robert Hunter officiating. Private family inurnment will be in Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield, and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born April 3, 1942, in Litchfield to Elmer and Hazel (Broberg) Curtis. She was a 1960 graduate of Litchfield High School and a 1973 graduate of Willmar Technical College. She was employed as a checkout cashier by Super Value and More 4 grocery stores.
She was a member of United Methodist Church in Litchfield and Jobs Daughters.
She is survived by her sons James Nelson of Litchfield, Joel "Joey" (and Jessica) Nelson of Denver, Colo., Jonathan (and Marsha) Nelson of Litchfield; three grandchildren; parents Elmer and Hazel Curtis of Litchfield; sisters Lynn (and Art) Brekke of Elk River, Dayna Burak of Battle Lake, Marcia (and Van) Provencher of Litchfield and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents.

Hazel A. Eiesland
Nov. 22, 1908 - June 17, 2000
STARBUCK - Hazel Annette Eiesland, 91, of Starbuck, formerly of Farwell, died Saturday at Minnewaska District Hospital in Starbuck.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at West Moe Lutheran Church in rural Brandon with the Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Starbuck Funeral Home of Starbuck.
She was born Nov. 22, 1908, in George, Iowa, to Alfred and Carrie (Helgerson) Helgeson. She was a graduate of Inwood, Iowa, High School and taught rural elementary school two years.
On June 27, 1928, she married Adolf Eiesland. They lived in the Inwood, Iowa, and Canton, S.D., areas, moving to Minnesota in 1957. Adolf died in September 1987. She moved to Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck in September 1999.
She was a Sunday School teacher and served on church boards and committees in the Canton area.
She is survived by her sons Fred Eiesland of Topeka, Kan., Aaron (and Alice) Eiesland of Brainerd, David (and Jeannine) Eiesland of Detroit Lakes, John Rolfe Eiesland of Minneapolis; 12 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and infant daughter Orrine Charlotte.

Arlyn R. Shemon
May 7, 1957 - July 6, 2000
ECHO - Arlyn Richard Shemon, 43, of Echo died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Clotilde Catholic Church in Green Valley with the Rev. Paul J. Hadusek officiating. Burial will be in Our Lady of Victory Catholic Cemetery in Lucan.
Visitation will 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday, with a 7:30 p.m. prayer service, at the church and one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Redwood Valley Funeral Home of Redwood Falls.
Survivors include his wife, three children, parents, and 12 siblings including Jim (and Bonnie) Shemon of Spicer.

Clifford P. Sommerfield
July 30, 1912 - July 6, 2000
CLARA CITY - Clifford Paul Sommerfield, 87, of Clara City died Thursday at Clara City Community Care Center.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Clara Catholic Church in Clara City. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Clara City, and one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born July 30, 1912, in Lismore to Paul and Katherine (Broich) Sommerfield. He was a graduate of Clara City High School.
On July 7, 1936, he married Carrie Harms in Montevideo. He was employed as a barber in Clara City for 15 years, and as warehouse manager at Artex Hobby Products of Clara City. He worked as a handyman after retirement.
He was a member of St. Clara Catholic Church, St. Anthony Society, and was a communion server and lector.
He is survived by his wife; daughters Joan (and John) Groen of Lake Lillian, Judy Claude of Oldsmar, Fla., Linda (and Leonard) Klein of Colbert, Wash.; brother Raymond Sommerfield of Federal Way, Wash.; sisters Irene (and Clayton) Rudolph of North Branch, Helen Redder of Sheridan, Wyo., Beverly (and Lawrence) Stassen of Walnut Grove; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

Earl L. Olson
July 25, 1921 - July 6, 2000
GLENWOOD - Earl Lewis Olson, 78, of Glenwood died Thursday at Glenwood Retirement Village.
His memorial service will be at 1 p.m. today at Glenwood Lutheran Church. Burial will be at a later date in Woodlawn Cemetery in Annandale.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Hoplin Funeral Home.
He was born July 25, 1921, in Annandale to Albert and Merle (Bentley) Olson. He was a graduate of Annandale High School and attended Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis.
On June 9, 1942, he married Esther Gerber in Howard Lake. He was employed by Brinks, Cofields Novelty of Annandale and La Beau Novelty of Minneapolis. In 1957, he became a Minnesota state trooper, serving his last 19 years before retirement out of Glenwood.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Nancy (and Bob) Gandrud of Glenwood; son Steve (and Linda) Olson of Annandale; mother Merle Olson Bullock of Glenwood; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters Eunice (and William) Sage of San Diego, Calif., Dorothy Rode of Annandale and Mary (and Robert) Sarault of Becker.
He was preceded in death by his father.

Phyllis I. Halverson
Feb. 16, 1917 - July 6, 2000
BROOTEN - Phyllis Ione Halverson, 83, formerly of Brooten, died Thursday at Bethany Home in Alexandria.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Hoplin Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Barb MacKinnon officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery in Brooten.
She was born Feb. 16, 1917, in Brooten to Christ and Esther (Nelson) Halverson. She was a graduate of Brooten High School and attended Business College in Minneapolis. She was employed as a seamstress. In the early 1940s, she moved to California where she was employed on aircraft assembly lines during World War II. She returned to Minneapolis where she was employed as a bookkeeper by Paper Supply Company and later by Johnson Meat Company. She moved into Bethel Manor Apartments in Alexandria in December 1998, and to Bethany Nursing Home in Alexandria in 1999.
She is survived by her nieces Nancy Alto of Alexandria, Diane Cihlar of St. Cloud and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Gladys E. 'Jo' Nauschultz
June 28, 1923 - July 6, 2000
BENSON - Gladys Elsie "Jo" Nauschultz, 77, of Benson, died Thursday at her home after a battle with cancer.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Benson with the Rev. Keith Born officiating. Burial will be in Benson City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Jacobson-Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson, and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born June 28, 1923, in Camp Lake Township, Swift County, to Henry S. and Emma O. (Anderson) Hanson. She was a 1942 graduate of Benson High School. She lived in Ogden, Utah, a few years, and then returned to Benson.
On Sept. 20, 1946, she married Lyle Gordon Nauschultz in Milbank, S.D. She worked in Benson as a typist and bookkeeper and for several years at Northway Store.
She is survived by her brothers Harry (and Lorraine) Hanson of Champlin, Delmar (and Lucille) Hanson of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1982, parents and two brothers, one in infancy.

Wayne P. Norby
May 22, 1932 - July 5, 2000
DENVER, Colo. - Wayne P. Norby, 68, of Denver, Colo., formerly of the Big Bend area, died Wednesday.
His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Big Bend Lutheran Church with the Rev. Corey Fuhrman officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Memorials are preferred to Chromosome 9 P-Network to benefit his grandson's chromosome research and support.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo, and one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born May 22, 1932, in Big Bend Township, Chippewa County, to Eddie and Ruby (Molden) Norby. He was a 1950 graduate of Appleton High School, and served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
On June 25, 1955, he married Ione Knutson in Swift County. They lived in Rapid City, S.D., and then moved to the Denver area. He was a foreman specializing in commercial buildings and power plants across the west for more than 40 years before retiring.
He was a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Denver, Sheetmetal Workers Union Local 9, and was a volunteer at Skinner Middle School Library. He was a former member of Montevideo American Legion and Civil Defense.
He is survived by his wife; daughter Kay (and Charles) Fial of Lafayette, Colo.; sons David (and Kaellyn) Norby of Birmingham, Ala., Douglas (and Laura) Norby of Richmond, Va.; four grandchildren; sisters Ruth Simonson of Montevideo, Janice (and Ken) Olsen of Montevideo, his twin Blanche (and Phil) Jordahl of Dawson and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and three sisters, two in infancy.

James A. Midtbo
Oct. 14, 1935 - July 7, 2000
SPICER - James Andrew Midtbo, 64, of Spicer, formerly of Minneapolis, died Friday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at United Methodist Church in Willmar with the Rev. Dan Hair officiating. Burial will be at a later date at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis. Memorials to Minneapolis Heart Institute are preferred.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Green Lake Funeral Home in Spicer, and one hour prior to services at the church. There will be no reviewal.
He was born Oct. 14, 1935, in Minneapolis to Berniece J. (Lawson) and Nels A. Midtbo. He graduated from high school in Minneapolis and attended the University of Minnesota for two years. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. Ticonderoga from 1956-58.
On Feb. 14, 1959, he married Carol A. Wilford in Minneapolis. He was employed by the Star Tribune from 1958 to 1995, when they moved to Spicer. He was a heart transplant recipient.
He was a mentor of youth for Kandiyohi County.
He is survived by his wife; son Gregory (and Valerie) Midtbo of Short Hills, N.J.; daughter Deanne (and Chad) Raitz of Fergus Falls; four grandchildren; brother Thomas (and Janet) Midtbo of Minneapolis; sister Beverly (and Douglas) Hansen of Spicer and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents.

Greg M. Michels
March 30, 1971 - July 7, 2000
ELROSA - Greg M. Michels, 29, of Elrosa died Friday in an automobile accident near Spring Hill.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. today at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Elrosa. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 to 10:15 a.m. today at the Patton-Schad Funeral Home in Sauk Centre.
He was born March 30, 1971, in Melrose to Maurice and Janet (Boecker) Michels. He was a construction worker before being employed as a truck driver at Jennie-O Foods.
He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church.
Survivors include his parents of Elrosa; brothers Brian Michels of Belgrade, Bradley Michels of Alexandria, Jason Michels of Minneapolis and Darin Michels of Elrosa; grandmother Elizabeth Boecker of Elrosa; and special friend Jennifer Lemmer of Belgrade.
He was preceded in death by grandparents Norbert Boecker and Matt and Marcella Michels.

Thilfred Westrud
March 9, 1908 - July 7, 2000
BLOOMINGTON - Thilfred Westrud, 92, of Bloomington, formerly of Minneapolis and Brooten, died Friday at the Martin Luther Manor in Bloomington.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. today at the Martin Luther Manor Chapel in Bloomington. Burial will be at approximately 3 p.m. today at Our Savior's Lutheran Cemetery in Brooten.
Visitation will be one-half hour prior to the services at the chapel. Arrangements are with the Johnson Funeral Home of Belgrade.
He was born March 9, 1908, in Lake Johanna Township, Pope County, to Hans and Annie (Olson) Westrud. He attended District 56 country school.
On Dec. 3, 1931, he married Dinah Johnson in Brooten. They lived in Brooten, where he worked as a mechanic, and in Minneapolis, where he worked as a shipper for Control Data. They moved to Martin Luther Manor in 1997.
He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church and was its caretaker from 1980 to 1996.
Survivors include his wife; daughters Elaine (and Ernest) Carrier of Rosemont and Mary Jane Perry of Bloomington; sons Ken (and Arlene) Westrud of Winona and Tony Westrud of Minneapolis; 12 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by four sisters and six brothers.

Steven B. Jessop
Aug. 21, 1948 - June 26, 2000
NEW LONDON - Steven Benjamin Jessop, 51, of Mobile Ala., formerly of Redwood Falls, died June 26 at a Mobile hospital.
His memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Lutheran Church of Norway Lake, New London. A funeral and burial were held in Mobile on June 29.
Survivors include his parents, Gerald and Verona Jessop of Spicer.
