Thomas A. Fernkes
April 4, 1951 - July 8, 2000
BIRD ISLAND - Thomas Anthony "Ferni" Fernkes, 49, of Bird Island died Saturday at the St. Cloud Hospital.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Bird Island with the Rev. Phil Schotzko officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., and from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Bird Island.
He was born April 4, 1951, at Olivia to Francis "Fritz" and Mary (Sandeen) Fernkes. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Bird Island in 1969 and earned an agribusiness degree in 1977 from Willmar Technical College. He was a disabled Vietnam veteran, serving in the U.S. Army from January 1970 to October 1975. He was wounded in February 1971. He received several Army commendation medals, including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.
On Aug. 18, 1973, he married Wanda Ovitt. He lived and worked in Buffalo Lake and in Bird Island.
Survivors include daughters Nichole (and husband Brian Tyl) Fernkes of Seattle, Rochelle (and Mark) Harder of Willmar, Amanda Fernkes of Winsted and Christa Fernkes of Olivia; his parents of Bird Island; four grandchildren; special friend Joleen Bergstrom; brothers and sisters Francie (and Gene) Pearson of Olivia, Sue (and Harv) Kranzler of Alexandria, Jeanne MacRae of Seattle, Peggy (and Bruce) Pearson of Park Rapids, Joseph (and Laurie) Fernkes of Olivia, Tony Fernkes of St. Joseph and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and an infant brother.
Albert C. Brown
May 23, 1912 - July 7, 2000
MOUNTAIN LAKE - Albert C. "A.C." "Ollie" Brown, 88, of Olivia, formerly of Mountain Lake, died Friday at the Eventide Home in Mountain Lake.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bethel Mennonite Church in Mountain Lake. Burial will be in Mountain Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Bjerum Funeral Home of Mountain Lake is in charge of arrangements.
He was born May 23, 1912, in Mountain Lake to Cornelius and Anna (Vogt) Brown. He graduated from Mountain Lake High School in 1930 and attended Macalester College for two years.
On Nov. 15, 1935, he married Leola Wollin in Estherville, Iowa. They lived in Mountain Lake and Milwaukee before moving to Mankato, where he worked for J.C. Penney Co. He was a store manager in Cooperstown, N.D., and in Ada. He purchased a Skogmo's clothing and variety store in Park Rapids. He moved the store to Olivia in 1960. He sold the store in 1971 and worked for H & R Block doing tax preparation. They also owned and operated a trailer court in Olivia for many years. He moved to the Eventide Home in April.
He served on the Olivia City Council and was a past president and member of the Olivia Chamber of Commerce. He had served as president of the Northern Lights Beach Association on Kandiyohi Lake. He was a member of Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church in Olivia, the Masons and a former member of Bethel Mennonite Church.
Survivors include his children Ellen (and Dave) Caufman of LeSueur and Bruce (and Paula) Brown of Savage; four grandchildren; sister Rena Guzenski of Henderson; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his wife and his parents.
Memorials are preferred to the Christian Community Outreach Center in Olivia.
Geraldine E. Ogren
July 22, 1919 - July 8, 2000
APPLETON - Geraldine Ellen Ogren, 80, of Bellingham died Saturday at the Appleton Municipal Hospital.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in Appleton with the Rev. Vernon Jensen officiating. Burial will be in the Appleton City Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the services at the church. Vaala Funeral Home of Appleton is in charge of arrangements.
She was born July 22, 1919, at Browns Valley to Howard and Clara Pool. She graduated from Madison High School.
On Oct. 31, 1941, she married Helmer L. Ogren at Madison. They farmed near Bellingham for 50 years.
She was a member of Bethel Evangelical Free Church.
Survivors include her husband; children Dennis (and Joy) Ogren of Brainerd and Nancy (and Kirk) Wichman of Lakeville; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; sister Bonnie Contreras of Atlanta, Ga., and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.
Jeanette Amundson

ROTHSAY - Jeanette Amundson, 82, formerly of Rothsay, died Sunday at Pioneer Retirement Community in Fergus Falls.
Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hamar Lutheran Church in Rothsay with the Rev. Harry Olson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. today at Grina Funeral Home in Rothsay, and one hour prior to services at the church.
She is survived by her five children including Connie (and Doug) Peterson of Granite Falls; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren and three sisters.
Glen E. Van Vickle
Aug. 4, 1928 - July 8, 2000
MINNEAPOLIS - Glen Edward Van Vickle, 71, of Minneapolis, formerly Glenwood, died Saturday at Veterans Medical Center in Minneapolis.
His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Hoplin Funeral Chapel in Glenwood with the Rev. Patrick Daniels officiating. Burial will be in Grove Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, and Thursday morning prior to services, at the funeral chapel.
There also will be visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7:30 p.m. American Legion service, at Henry W. Anderson Mortuary, 3640 23rd Ave. S., Minneapolis.
He was born Aug. 4, 1928, in Glenwood to Earl and Jeanette (Simonson) Van Vickle. He was a graduate of Glenwood High School and served in the U.S. Navy. He worked construction jobs until an accident left him disabled.
He married Anna Heinricks near Glenwood. Anna died Oct. 15, 1999.
He was known as the "Poppy King" of Minneapolis because of his efforts and success selling Legion poppies and volunteered at nursing homes in Starbuck and Glenwood.
He is survived by his daughters Josephine (and Al "Butch) Schug of Glenwood, Diana (and William "Bill" Palmer) Van Vickle of Minneapolis, Glenna (and Richard) Denson of Rockford; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; brother Clifford (and Joann) Van Vickle and sister Myrtle (and Ernest) Olson.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, infant son Glen E. Jr. and one granddaughter.
Martin C. Meier
April 20, 1917 - July 10, 2000
CHAMPLIN - Martin Carl Meier, 83, of Champlin, formerly of Montevideo, died Monday at his home.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. today at Trinity Lutheran Church in Slayton with the Rev. Jeff Lee officiating. Burial will be in Prairie Hill Cemetery in Fulda.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Totzke Funeral Home in Slayton (507-836-6179).
He was born April 20, 1917, in Fulda to August and Emma Hellwinkel Meier. He attended St. Paul's Lutheran School and was a graduate of Dunwoody Institute of Minneapolis where he studied machinery. He was employed as a machinist in Minneapolis and then moved to California where he worked on guns on war ships during World War II.
On Oct. 27, 1944, he married Marion Bradley in California. In 1948 they moved to Worthington, and in 1950 moved to a farm south of Fulda. They farmed near Montevideo from 1955 to 1984. They moved to Lake Shetek and in December 1997 to Champlin.
He was a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Anoka, previous member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Slayton, and previous member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Montevideo where he sang in the church choir. He was a member of Montevideo Barbershoppers.
He is survived by his wife; children Karl (and Joyce) Meier of Sunnyvale, Calif., Laurie Peka of Champlin, Julie Negen of Montevideo and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, four sisters and one grandson.
Arthur W. Paulson

STARBUCK - Arthur, W. Paulson, 96, of Starbuck died Monday at the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in Starbuck.
His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at East Zion Lutheran Church, rural Starbuck, with the Rev. Tenner Thompson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be for one hour prior to the services at the church.
He was born Oct. 18, 1903, in Rolling Forks Township, Pope County, to Edward and Julia (Arneson) Paulson. He attended school at District 47 through eighth grade. He worked on the home farm and also in Minneapolis for a short time.
He married Inez Lillemo, and they returned to the family farm. Inez died on Jan. 10, 1985. He married Nora Pederson on March 26, 1988. She died July 27, 1997. He entered the Minnewaska Lutheran Home in 1993, following a stroke.
He was a member of the Rolling Forks Lutheran Church until it dissolved and then became a member of East Zion Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Young at Heart singing group.
He is survived by stepchildren Marvel Braaten of Starbuck, Larry (and Joyce) Pederson of Glenwood, Dale (and Judy) Pederson of Lowry, Glen Pederson of Glenwood and Arlen (and Judy) Pederson of Benson; sister Eunice Muri of Glenwood and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wives, two brothers and two sisters.
Ordell F. Antonsen

HECTOR - Ordell F. Antonsen, 81, of Hector, died Wednesday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
Her memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hector. Burial will be in Hector City Cemetery.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Arrangements are with Hughes Funeral Home of Hector.
She was born Aug. 29, 1918, in Hector, to Rudolph and Wilhelmine (Schroeder) Schiro. She was a graduate of Hector High School. On April 14, 1944, she married Virgil Grant Antonsen in Hector where they lived. They wintered in Hawaii. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hector.
She is survived by her daughter Patricia (and Barry) Miller of Springfield, Ill.; son Gregg of Hector; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister Ruth O'Neill of Mesa, Ariz.; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband on Feb. 4, 1997, one sister, and an infant brother.
Virgil J. Nielsen
Aug. 15, 1936 - July 12, 2000
VIRGINIA - Virgil Jarold Nielsen, 63, of Virginia, died Wednesday at his home in Virginia.
His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Wing-Bain Funeral Home Chapel in Montevideo with the Rev. Larry Olson officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Montevideo.
He was born Aug. 15, 1936, in Trent, S.D., to Harold and Mable (Chamley) Nielsen. He was raised in Big Bend and was a 1954 graduate of Milan High School, and moved to Silver Bay where he was employed by Reserve Mining Company. He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany. He returned to Reserve Mining Company, working 30 years, and living in Babbitt and Embarrass. He then clear cut timber for the State of Minnesota and county, retiring in 1997.
He is survived by his mother of Salem, Ore.; sisters Janet (and Eldo) Murphy of Salem, Ore., Cheryl (and Ed) Wilson of Portland, Ore.; brother Rodney (and Madeline) of Watson; special friend Louise Grams, and her family, of Virginia; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Violet E. Lund

DAWSON - Violet Eleanor Lund, 93, of Dawson, died Wednesday at Johnson Memorial Home in Dawson.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Providence Valley Lutheran Church in rural Dawson with the Rev. Kenneth Kilheffer officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at Hanson & Dahl Funeral Home in Dawson, and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born Feb. 7, 1907, in Omro Township, Yellow Medicine County, to August and Bertha (Sand) Swenson. She attended Dawson Public School and was later employed by Dawson Hospital. On Feb. 27, 1929, she married Marvin S. Lund. They farmed until retirement in 1972.
She is survived by her children Kermit (and Phyllis) of Dawson, Mercedes Johnson of Maple Plain, Marlene (and Holden) Nelson of Rockford; daughter-in-law Phyllis Lund of Plymouth; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, son Cordell, son-in-law Neil Johnson, three sisters, one brother and one foster sister.
Peter Asche

CLARA CITY - Peter Asche, 86, of Clara City, died Wednesday at his residence.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bethany Reformed Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. today at Wing-Bain Funeral Home in Clara City, and continue one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born Sept. 22, 1913, in Little Rock, Iowa, to Fred and Kate (Beckman) Asche. He was a 1933 graduate of Little Rock High School. On June 27, 1940, he married Katie Andresen in Clara City where they lived. He was employed as a bank cashier by Citizen's State Bank 28 years, retiring in January 1979. He was a member of Bethany Reformed Church, serving as elder, deacon, superintendent of Sunday School, and Sunday School teacher. He was a member of Lions and school board.
He is survived by his wife; children Charles (and Terri) of Maple Grove, Doris (and Don) Bents of Pennock, Duane (and Sue) of Shawnee, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three sisters and four brothers.
Lilly Wegner
March 31, 1918 - July 12, 2000
LITCHFIELD - Lilly Wegner, 82, of Litchfield, died Wednesday at Dassel Lakeside Nursing Home in Dassel.
Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Church of God in Litchfield with the Rev. Dale Swartz officiating. Burial will be in Ripley Cemetery in Litchfield.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield, and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born March 31, 1918, in Lester Prairie, to William and Pearl (Kirkpatrick) Berry. She was a 1936 graduate of Lester Prairie High School. On Jan. 30, 1941, she married Martin W. Wegner in Eden Valley. They lived in Lester Prairie, moved to Litchfield in 1953, and to a farm near Dassel in 1974. She moved to the Dassel Lakeside Nursing Home because of bad health. She was employed by Dassel Bakery. She was a member of Litchfield Church of God, active in ladies aid, Dassel Senior Citizen Organization and Dassel American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband; daughters Betty Johns of Greenbrier, Ark., Fay Wegner of Litchfield; sons Lowell (and Karen) of Pine River, Marty of Litchfield; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sisters Elaine Roepke of Lester Prairie, Jean O'Donnell of St. Louis Park; and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by one brother.
Curtis B. Dahl

Terry E. Lothert

OLIVIA - Terry Erwin Lothert, 48, of Olivia died Saturday at MeritCare Hospital in Fargo, N.D.
His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Olivia. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service followed by a rosary, and 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia.
He was born July 1, 1952, in Redwood Falls to Erwin and Ruth (Pansch) Lothert. He was a 1970 graduate of Morton High School and served in the U.S. Army from 1971-73.
On May 4, 1974, he married Susie Kuglin, and they lived in Olivia. He was employed in the concrete construction business and was currently owner of Terry Lothert Concrete.
He was a member of American Legion.
He is survived by his wife; children Jackie (and Chad) Edwards of Hector, Andrew of Olivia, Charlie of Olivia; mother of Morton; brother Allan (and Donna) Lothert of Redwood Falls; sister Cheryl (and Dennis) Drewyer of Newnan, Ga., and other relatives.
