Barold E. Huizinga

WILLMAR -- Barold E. "Barney" Huizinga, 90, of Willmar died Tuesday at the Heritage Nursing Home.
His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Willmar with the Rev. Joe Steinbeisser officiating. Burial will be in the Mound Cemetery in Ortonville.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary, at the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home.
He was born on February 27, 1910, near Ortonville to Orrie and Bertha (Bruche) Huizinga. He attended nearby rural schools.
On May 18, 1938, he married Cecelia Wellschlager at Rosen. They lived and farmed near Ortonville for 19 years. They moved in 1959 to Willmar where they owned and operated Barney's Food Market at Eagle Lake. Ill health forced him to retire in 1974.
He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, fourth degree.
He is survived by his wife; daughters: Sister Bernita of Arcadia, Calif., and Marguerite Hanson of Willmar; son James (and Jackie) Huizinga of Weslaco, Texas; three grandchildren; five great grandchildren; and sisters Elsie Jacobson of Big Lake and Hildegard Olson of Ortonville.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and three sisters.
Harvey O. Hoff
Feb. 17, 1926 - Sept. 26, 2000
STARBUCK -- Harvey Ordell Hoff, 74, of Starbuck, formerly of Montevideo, died Tuesday at his home.
His memorial service will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Saron Lutheran Church in Montevideo with the Rev. Steve Rheingans officiating. Burial will be at 1 p.m. Sunday in Baxter City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 7 to 9 p.m. today at Hoplin Funeral Chapel.
He was born Feb. 17, 1926, in Minneota to Jesse and Agnes (Johnson) Hoff. He was a graduate of Clarkfield High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945-46 in Japan as a sergeant in the Occupation Force. He attended GI agricultural classes.
On June 25, 1947, he married Bernice Swenners of Clarkfield. They moved to a farm in rural Granite Falls until retirement due to a farm accident. He then became a salesman.
He was a member of Saron Lutheran Church and served on Wegdahl Elevator board.
He is survived by his wife; sons Duane (and Judy) Hoff of Elk River, David (and Barb) Hoff of Baxter; daughter Deb (and Paul) Wilson of Clarkfield; six grandchildren; brother Hubert (and Virgie) Hoff of Clarkfield; sister Shirley (and David) Javens of Cottonwood and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one granddaughter, two brothers and one sister.
Harold W. Tanhoff

WATSON -- Harold Wilferd Tanhoff, 80, of Watson died Sunday at Clara City Care Center in Clara City.
His funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Montevideo with the Rev. Don Lovejoy officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation will be this afternoon and evening at Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.
He was born May 24, 1920, in Montevideo to William and Josie (Coyle) Tanhoff. He attended rural school. He served in C.C. Camp near Winona, and the U.S. Army from 1942-45 in Alaska and the European Theater. He was employed as a carpenter by Peterson Brothers Construction.
On Sept. 7, 1963, he married Myrtle Benson in St. Paul. They lived in Montevideo, moving to Watson in 1998. He was currently living at Clara City Care Center.
He was a member of United Methodist Church, American Legion and VFW.
He is survived by his stepson Merald (and Bonnie) Sagnes of Trade Lake, Wis.; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents, wife on March 14, 1999, one brother and one sister.
Vernon Chalberg

WILLMAR -- Vernon Chalberg, 75, of Willmar, died Tuesday at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar.
His memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Willmar with the Rev. Janeva Stromberg officiating. Burial will be in Tripolis Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in rural Kandiyohi.
He was born Sept. 6, 1925, to A.W. and Melvina (Peterson) Chalberg. He was a graduate of Willmar High School. He was employed by Central Dairy of Willmar. He developed a nervous condition in his early 20s, and after treatment and medication was employed by West Central Industries. He was a recent resident of Ashwood Health Care Center in Willmar.
He was a member of Tripolis Evangelical Lutheran Church in rural Kandiyohi.
He is survived by his brother Lowel (and Mona) Chalberg of Silver Bay; sisters Helen Nord of Osakis, Marilyn Egge of Hamilton, Mont., and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers.
Floyd Kuehnast

LANESBORO -- Floyd Kuehnast, 82, of Lanesboro, died Sept. 17 in Austin.
Funeral services were held Sept. 20 in Lanesboro.
Survivors include son Douglas (and Donna) Kuehnast of Willmar.
Robert Shaddrick

LITCHFIELD -- Robert William Shaddrick, 71, of Litchfield, died Thursday at the Meeker County Memorial Hospital in Litchfield.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home in Litchfield with the Rev. Mark Mallack officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park in Minneapolis at 2 p.m.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and for one hour prior to the services at the Johnson-Hagglund Funeral Home.
He was born Oct. 16, 1928, in Minneapolis to Harvey and Helen Johnson. He was raised in Minneapolis.
He married Patricia Sue Holmes on Nov. 4, 1950 at the St. Francis Cabrini Catholic Church in Minneapolis. He was an over the road truck driver and a member of Teamsters Local 120 and General Driver Steward. They moved to a home on Star Lake near Litchfield after he retired in 1990.
He is survived by his wife; one son, Michael (and Cheryl) Shaddrick of New Hope; three grandchildren; and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.
Claude E. Nelson
June 20, 1929 - Sept. 28, 2000
BELGRADE -- Claude Edward Nelson, 71, of Belgrade, died Thursday at the St. Cloud Hospital.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade with the Rev. Carl Listug officiating. Interment
will be held at the Fort Snelling National Cemetery in St. Paul.
There will be no visitation.
He was born on June 20, 1929 in Rosholt, S.D. to Nencel and Elizabeth (Matteson) Nelson. He grew up on the family farm near Rosholt where he attended school. From May, 1951, through December, 1952, during the the Korean War he served in the U.S. Army. He continued serving in the National Guard following the war until November, 1954.
He married Joanne Glauvitz in Belgrade on December 25, 1954. They lived in Fairmont for a short time, and then returned to Belgrade in 1955. He worked for the Department of Natural Resources for 37 years. He was stationed at the hatcheries located near Hawick, Paynesville, Glenwood and Spicer.
He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Belgrade, and the New London American Legion Post #537.
He is survived by his wife, Joanne of Belgrade; daughters Elizabeth Bean of Stillwater, Linda (and Robert) Ampe of Savage; four grandchildren; brothers, Howard (and Doris) of New Effington, S.D., Russell of Brookings, Ore., Harvey (and Emogene) of Oakdale; and sisters, Ellen Wold of Belgrade, and Cleone (and Ole) Gable of New London.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother.
Florence Heil

HECTOR -- Florence Heil, 88, of Hector died Thursday at Burns Manor Nursing Home in Hutchinson.
Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John's Catholic Church in Hector with burial in the church cemetery.
Visitation is from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Hughes Funeral Home in Hector with a prayer service at 5 p.m. Visitation continues Monday at the church for one hour prior to the service.
She was born March 10, 1912, at Mankato to Joseph and Florentine (Prybylla) Heil and resided in Mankato until moving to Hector. She attended the Bird Island Parochial School. She worked at the Kaplan's and Coast to Coast stores in Hector. She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church.
She is survived by her son, Eugene Heil of Hutchinson; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Phil (and Dorothy) Heil of Alexandria; two sisters, Leona Laffen of Underwood and Marie McCarthy of Riverside, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, one sister and her daughter-in-law.
Ruth Johnson

MONTEVIDEO -- Ruth F. Johnson, 82, of Montevideo died Wednesday at the St. Cloud Hospital.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Montevideo with the Revs. Douglas Olson and Warren Broughton officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Cemetery.
Visitation is Sunday afternoon and evening at the Anderson Funeral Home in Montevideo.
She was born May 18, 1918, at Big Bend to John and Hattie (McClocklin) Thompson. She attended school and grew up in the Big Bend area. On Dec. 3, 1936, she married Sherman C. Johnson at the Big Bend parsonage. They farmed in the Benson area before moving to Montevideo in 1955. She worked as a waitress at several local cafes and later as a nurse's aide at Luther Haven until she retired. She was a crafts instructor at the Senior Center and a member of the VFW Auxiliary.
She is survived by four children, Richard S. Johnson of Dawson, Dorothy A. Johnson of Warrenton, Ore., Cynthia Johnson (and Arlin Heinrich) of St. Onge, S.D., and Patricia (and Herman Jr.) Moseng of Elk River; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sarah Weflen of Montevideo and Elvera Nokleby of Benson; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1990; one daughter, Alvonna; one granddaughter; six brothers; and three sisters.
Matthew H. Ervin

OLIVIA -- Matthew H. Ervin, 33, of Olivia died Friday at the Renville County Hospital.
The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Faith United Methodist Church in Olivia with the Rev. Byron Perrine officiating. Burial is in the Olivia Cemetery.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Olivia and continues Tuesday at the church for one hour prior to services.
He was born July 21, 1967, at Olivia to Ben and Patsy (Refsland) Ervin. He graduated from Olivia High School in 1986 and has since been employed as a service technician with the family business, Ben Ervin and Sons Well Drilling. He married Carmen Sarsland on Dec. 31, 1999.
He is survived by his wife; five children, Shane, Jeffrey, Andrew, Aaron and Arica; his father, Ben Ervin of Olivia; his brothers, Doug (and Sarah) Ervin of Stillwater, Daniel (and Jolene) Ervin of Olivia, David (and Jan) Ervin of Olivia, William (and Michelle) Ervin of Olivia, Peter (and Malisa) Ervin of Appleton and Benjamin (and Lisa) Ervin of Olivia; two sisters, Peggy (and Alan) Tersteeg of Olivia and Mary (and Jeff) Blume of Olivia; many nieces and nephews and other relatives.

Edna I. Thorsrud

WILLMAR -- Edna I. Thorsrud, 84, of Willmar died Saturday morning at Rice Memorial Hospital.
The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church with the Rev. Steven Bielenberg officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery.
Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Peterson Brothers Funeral Home in Willmar and at the church prior to the service.
She was born May 21, 1916, in Benson to Alfred and Anna (Kaasa) Anderson. She grew up in rural Murdock and attended the Camp Lake rural school. On June 26, 1940, she married Gilman A. Thorsrud in Brooten. They lived and farmed in Camp Lake Township and later moved to Brooten. In 1952 they moved to Willmar. She was active in various church women's activities.
She is survived by one son, Orlyn (and Dianne) Thorsrud of Willmar; four grandchildren; a sister, Florence (and Milton) Syverson of Glenwood; and two sisters-in-law.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1999; a daughter, Orlette Bush; one sister; and two brothers.
Annie Freiborg

RENVILLE -- Annie Freiborg, 94, of Renville died Wednesday at RenVilla Nursing Home.
Her funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Ebenezer Presbyterian Church in rural Renville with the Rev. Douglas Workman officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery in Renville.
Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. today at Dirks-Blem Funeral Home in Renville and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born Jan. 1, 1906, in Crooks Township, Renville County, to Henry and Ludevina (Jenson) Stomberg. She attended Renville County School District 140.
On Feb. 27, 1927, she married Ike Freiborg, and they farmed north of Renville. Ike died in July 1955. She moved into Renville in 1958, and several years ago moved to Meadows on Main.
She was a lifelong member of Ebenezer Presbyterian Church, the first child baptized at that church, in its Ladies Aid, Friendship Circle, Golden Aires and a member of Renville Senior Citizens.
She is survived by her sons Henry (and Harriet) of Renville, Louie (and Junith) of Renville; daughters Inez (and Arnie) Underland of Clara City, Idella (and Ivan) Underland of Willmar, Janet (and Larry) Agre of Brandon, S.D.; daughter-in-law Mildred (and John) Meyer of Raymond; 25 grandchildren, 50 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant son Louis Marvin, son Boyd, one grandson, four brothers, two sisters and son-in-law George Feldman.
Myrtle J. Engan

FERGUS FALLS -- Myrtle J. Engan, 87, of Fergus Falls died Monday at Prairie Senior Cottages in Hutchinson.
Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Fergus Falls with the Rev. Paul Nelson officiating. Burial will be in Bethlehem Lutheran Cemetery in Atwater.
Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at Olson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls and one hour prior to services at the church.
She was born Dec. 3, 1912, in Renville to Dr. J.W. and Ella (Wigdahl) Preisinger. She was a graduate of Renville High School and a graduate of Carlton College. She taught school in Brownton.
On July 27, 1941, she married Earl Engan. They moved to Fergus Falls where they both taught school. Earl died April 16, 1996.
She is survived by her sons Earl Engan Jr. of San Jose, Calif., David (and Connie) Engan of Prior Lake; sister Eunice Kilpatrick of Austin, Texas; one grandson and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Edward J. O'Brien

ST. LOUIS PARK -- Edward John O'Brien, 67, of St. Louis Park, formerly of Benson, died Monday at Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park.
His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Benson with the Rev. Steven Verhelst officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a 4:30 p.m. rosary and 7 p.m. parish prayer service, at Jacobson-Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson and one hour prior to services at the church.
He was born Aug. 21, 1933, in Benson to James and Cecelia (Bach) O'Brien. He was a 1952 graduate of Benson High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55. He moved to Minneapolis in 1966 and was employed as a civil engineer. He was founder and president of Waterco Corporation for the past 30 years.
He is survived by his sister Patricia (and Donald) Volkmuth of St. Cloud; brothers Charles (and JoAnn) O'Brien of Minneapolis, Robert (and Jayne) O'Brien of St. Paul and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
