Edna Folden - - 1909 - 2001
Edna Folden, 92, 305-8th Ave. NE, Minot, died Wednesday, April 4, 2001, in a Minot medical center.
She was born Jan. 17, 1909, on the family farmstead of her parents, George and Janet Jurgens, in the Granville area. In 1912, when she was three years old, her parents died of typhoid fever. Edna and her brother Frederick, age five, then lived with an aunt and uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Jurgens. Frederick drowned in the Granville Great Northern Reservoir in 1919.
Edna received her elementary education in Kottke Valley School District near Granville in McHenry County. After attending Granville High School for three years, she enrolled in the Minot College High. Her graduation class of 1926 was the first graduation held in the new McFarland Auditorium on the campus. She later graduated from Minot State Teachers College. She also attended college in Dillon, MT, in Valley City and at Monmouth, OR.
On Nov. 3, 1940, she married Oscar Folden in Zion Lutheran Church, Minot. They lived on the Folden farm in Kottke Valley, north of Norwich. In 1943, they adopted three children, two daughters, Doris and Zora, and a son Von, who died in a car accident in 1956.
She taught for 34 years, beginning in 1926 in a rural school in McHenry County. From 1936 to 1940, she was a member of the Drake School faculty. She quit teaching for a period, returning to her profession after her husband's health failed. They moved to Kramer, ND, where she taught in the city school. From 1960 to 1966, they lived in Wahpeton, where she was a member of the public kindergarten staff. They then moved to Minot where she owned and operated the Jack and Jill Kindergarten until 1971. In the 1940s, she was chosen as one of four area educators to write a new section on the North Dakota course of studies.
She was one of the early 4-H leaders in McHenry County. She was long active in Republican Party activities. In 1974, she was Minot's delegate to the National Federation of Republican Women at its annual gathering in Washington, D.C., and was among the 800 delegates entertained by Mrs. Richard Nixon at a tea in the White House. On two other occasions, she attended a tea in the White House at which Nancy Reagan was host. She also was a regional director for northwest North Dakota Republican Women for some years, appointed to the post by the North Dakota Federation of Republican Women. In 1980, Edna was chosen as one of three national electors to cast North Dakota's vote for President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George Bush.
In 1967, Edna and her husband purchased the historic house at 414-1st St. NW, once the residence of Erik Ramstad, considered Minot's first resident homesteader. The Foldens were longtime members of the Ward County Historical Society, and Edna had served on the society board since 1972. The couple had preserved School No. 4 of the Kottke Valley School District and then donated it and moved it to the society's historical area at the State Fairgrounds in Minot. They spent much time and effort in 1972 and 1973 in restoring it to its original condition, complete with the original books, desks, maps and globe, and in the repair of walls, cleaning and redecorating. They later discovered a tiny pioneer house in Verendrye and donated it to the society. The Foldens also restored that building and furnished it with oldtime furniture, much of it from the original homes of their parents. For years, as long as their health permitted, they were on hand to greet the hundreds of visitors who toured those buildings during the State Fair.
In the late 70s and early 80s, Mrs. Folden traveled abroad extensively. She led a number of tour groups to parts of Europe and the Mideast, including Beirut, Lebanon, Turkey, Damascus, Syria, Jordan, Israel and Egypt, and to the Orient, including South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. She made two journeys alone to China to visit the adopted daughters of her late relative, Rev. Warren Winter, who died in a Communist prison. Mrs. Folden smuggled Bibles, devotional and song books into these families. The daughters also had been imprisoned. Twenty-eight years later, she was again able to contact them. She and her husband also supported seven Korean children through the World Vision Program. Mr. Folden died in 1994.
