Mildred Evelyn Svee - - 1912 - 2001
Mildred Evelyn Svee, 88, Lansford, died Sunday, April 8, 2001, in a Minot medical center.
Mildred was born July 20, 1912, in Maxbass, ND, the daughter of Julius and Mary (Amundson) Johnson. She was raised in Maxbass and attended Lewis and Mt. Rose, rural schools.
Mildred married Axel Svee September 19, 1931, in Maxbass. They lived and farmed on the family homestead near Maxbass until her husbands death in January of 1976. Since then she has resided with her son, Harvey, near Lansford.
She spent many hours helping Axel with the farm work. Mildred enjoyed playing cards and visiting with friends and neighbors until her eye sight failed. Later she enjoyed visiting with her dear friends over the phone. She loved music, especially old time dance music.
She was a member of the English Lutheran Church, Maxbass. Mildred suffered without complaining of the severe pain endured for many years from osteoporosis and glaucoma.
Survivors: Son, Harvey Svee, Lansford; daughters, Bertha Palen, Bismarck, Helen (Arlan) Johnson, Minot, Betty (Jack) Weise, and Janice (Bill) McLean, all Lansford; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; sisters, Grace Sorenson, Minot, and Johanna McKnight, Las Cruces, NM; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Axel; daughter, Margaret Morrison; daughter-in-law, Frances Svee; sons-in-law, Gary Palen and Ross Morrison; brothers, Oscar, Perry, Carl and Eddy Johnson; sisters, Anna Helgeson and Bertha Bjorngaard.
Funeral: Wednesday, April 11, 2001, at 2:00 p.m., at the English Lutheran Church, Maxbass, ND.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service in the church.
Burial: Graceland Cemetery, Maxbass, ND.

Clara Swenson - - 1936 - 2001
Clara Lindberg Swenson, 75, Bowbells, died Saturday, February 10, 2001, in a Minot medical center.
She was born January 4, 1926, in Columbus, ND the daughter of Martin and Gunda (Kinsbeck) Lindberg. She was reared and educated in Columbus and attended grade school there. Clara moved to Bowbells and attended high school from which she graduated in 1944.
She was employed at Neumann Drug Store in Bowbells, when she met Bertil Swenson. On November 8, 1947, she married Bertil in Crosby, ND. They operated a restaurant in Columbus for six months, then returned to Bowbells to farm. She also worked at Simonson's Department Store, then she started her family. For several years she worked at AJ's Bar in Bowbells and in 1972, she retired to enjoy her family and hobbies. Bertil died on September 24, 1997, in Minot.
She spent her wonderful life enjoying gardening, sewing, canning, baking, shopping, traveling, family activities, card games, bingo, and most of all her grandchildren.
Clara was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bowbells.
Survivors: Sons, Jerome Swenson and his wife Ellie, Minot, James Swenson, Coteau and Jeffery Swenson and his wife Sharon, Bowbells; Daughters, Janice Stompro and her husband David, Idaho Falls, ID; 6 grandchildren, Laurel Swenson, Dustin Larson, Kady Larson, Shannon Stompro, Kristine Stompro, Jessica Swenson, and Joshua Swenson; 1 great-granddaughter, Lacey Swenson; Sisters, Edna Dahl and her husband Orvald, Columbus, and Dagny Ferm, Minot. Several nieces and nephews and cousins also survive. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bertil, her parents, and two brothers, Emil and Gilbert Lindberg.
Funeral Service: Tuesday, February 13, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Bowbells, ND.
Visitation: Monday, February 12, 2001, from 3 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Bowbells, ND.
Burial: Bowbells Community Cemetery, Bowbells, ND. Burial will take place in the spring of 2001.

Steven Talbott - - 1949 - 2000
Steven Talbott, 51, Douglas, died Thursday, June 29, 2000, in a Minot medical center of natural causes.
He was born May 12, 1949, in Minot, ND, the son of Gerald and Mildred (Nelson) Talbott. He was raised and educated in the Douglas area and graduated from Douglas High School in 1967. He worked at the Farmers Elevator in Douglas following high school, until he left for the service. On February 20, 1968, he joined the United States Navy. After basic training in San Diego, CA, he served on Midway Island and also in Vietnam. He was discharged from the Navy in 1971. On November 13, 1971, he married Pamela Baker at Napa, CA. He worked on Mare Island in the shipyards for a time before going to work for Mayflower Moving Company for ten years. They then moved to Douglas where he worked for Dakota Drug as a distributor for many years. He was presently working for the Soo Line Railroad, and was a member of the BMWE Union.
He was baptized at the Douglas Methodist Church and was a member there until it closed.

Mabel Tharp - - 1903 - 2000
Mabel Tharp, 97, 305 8th Avenue NE, died Saturday in a Minot nursing home.
She was born on October 13, 1903, rural Surrey, ND the daughter of Peder and Anna (Borgan) Sylstad, who farmed near Surrey. She attended Bell School of Ward County, where in 1920, she completed requirements for and was awarded the Common School diploma of ND. She then went to work on the Saugstad farm where she met her future husband, Clarence I. Tharp. They were married on December 17, 1924, at Bethany Lutheran Church in Minot. They first lived in Bemidji, returning in 1927 to Minot where he worked for the Great Northern Railway, now the Burlington Northern Santa Fe. They later entered the Trinity Nursing Home in Minot. Her husband died on May 26, 1998.
She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Minot, Lady Trainmen of Great Northern Railway, now the Burlington Northern Santa Fe and Trinity Medical Center Auxiliary.
Survivors: daughter, Doris E. Peterson and her husband Archie; grandson, Bradley D. Peterson and his wife Christy, Mobridge, SD and Terry A. Peterson, Minot, ND. One Great grandson, Andrew Peterson, Mobridge, SD sister, Bernice Johnson, Minot. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers and two sisters.

Peggy L. Thrailkill, 53, Minot, died Friday, August 4, 2000, from injuries sustained in a car accident North of Dickinson.
She was born January 25, 1947, in Minot, ND, to Lester and Lorraine Wilson. She was reared in the Minot area and attended Minot Public Schools, graduating from Minot High School in 1965. She worked as a receptionist at St. Joseph's Hospital for a time and later at Dakota Boys Ranch. She has been a secretary at Timm Moving and Storage for over 20 years. She was once married to Terry Thrailkill and later to Elton Ellingson Jr.
Survivors: daughter, Melissa Lovejoy, Minot; son, Brad Thrailkill, Longview, WA; mother, Lorraine Wilson, Minot; brother, Jerry Wilson, Rainer, OR; two grandchildren, Paige Lovejoy and Jera Thrailkill; step children, Leslie, Jeanie, Tony and Sherri. She was preceded in death by her father, Lester Wilson.

Williminia Thomas - - 1945 - 2000
Williminia "Billie" M. Thomas, 55, Velva, died Wednesday, October 25, 2000, in a Minot medical center from pancreatic cancer.
She was born January 12, 1945, to Homer and Ruth (Reigstad) Smith in Minot, ND. She was reared and educated in Sawyer and graduated from Sawyer High School. On August 25, 1962, she married Leo Thomas at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, Velva, ND. They farmed in the Velva area for their entire marriage and for the past 11 years she was a certified nurses aid at the Souris Valley Care Center in Velva.
She was a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church, the Confraternity of Christian Mothers and also was a CCD teacher. She was a member of the Moose Lodge, Minot and at one time was a member of the Eagles Club, Minot and the Saddle Club, Velva. She loved riding horse and was an avid gardener and enjoyed dancing.

Emilia Torno - - 1904 - 2000
Emilia Torno, 95, 3205 4th St SW #22, Minot, died Thursday, September 7, 2000 at a Minot medical center.
Emilia was born October 9, 1904, in Klaustitz, Besarabia, the daughter of John and Karolina (Richter) Flath. When she was 6 months old, they moved to Krim, ND, near Hazen. They then moved to the Garrison-Max area and were some of the original settlers of Max, ND. She attended county school and was the first person to graduate from the eighth grade at Ulrich School #4. She worked at the restaurant in Max and did housekeeping work for a time. She married Emil Torno on January 21, 1926 in Max. They moved to a farm west of Max and farmed there for 40 years. In 1966, they retired from farming and moved into Max. Emil died December 12, 1977. In 1988, she moved to Minot, ND, and lived in the Milton Young Towers. In 1997, she moved to Guardian Manor, where she lived until the time of her death. She enjoyed gardening, canning, baking, making afghans and crocheting hangers for decoration.
She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and the Senior Citizens, both of Max.

Arnold Charles Trayhorn, born, February 26, 1918, Binghamton, NY and died October 21, 2000, Minot, ND
Memorial Service: A private family service was held
Arnold was born February 26, 1918, in Binghamton, NY, the son of Richard and Adelaide (Winkler) Trayhorn. He was raised and attended school in Binghamton.
He served in the United States Navy and was honorably discharged in the late 1930's. He moved to Sidney, NY, and on August 30, 1941 he married Letha L. Charles. The couple moved to Binghamton where he worked as a machinist at Ozalids Machine Shop. In 1958 they moved to Seattle, WA, where he was employed by the Boeing Company and worked on the Boeing missile program. He retired from Boeing after 20 years of service at the age of 62. Letha died following a car accident on November 2, 1982.
He married Esther Dawson on July 16, 1983 in Great Falls, MT. Following their marriage the couple lived in several cities in Montana and Wyoming, before moving to Minot two weeks ago.
Those Most Honored To Share In His Life: Wife, Esther, Minot; daughters, Patricia Lilliquist and husband Lawrence, Minot; Sandra Thingvold and husband Donald, Rugby; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; brother, Roderick Trayhorn and wife Audrey, Port Richey, FL; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Letha, and parents, Richard and Adelaide, and one infant brother.

Carroll Tudahl - - 1898 - 2000
Carroll Tudahl, 76, Box 15, Berthold, ND, died Friday, July 28, 2000, in a Minot Medical Center.
He was born on April 27, 1924, to George and Dena (Bekkerus) Tudahl on the family farm one mile east and ½ mile north of Berthold. He graduated from Berthold High School in 1942. He entered the US Army during World War II and served from 1943 to 1946 in the European Theater. On October 5, 1947 in Berthold, he married Norma Kleven and they lived in Berthold. Carroll was the Postmaster in Berthold for 24 years, until his retirement in 1989. Before that he worked as a bookkeeper for businesses, such as, Harrington Brothers, Bethlehem Steel, Cataletic Construction, Burlington Northern Railroad and other businesses most all in the Berthold and Minot areas.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the American Legion both of Berthold; the VFW and the Eagles Aerie, both of Minot. He also enjoyed golf, playing the piano, the guitar, the accordion and singing.
Survivors: Wife, Norma Tudahl, Berthold; sons, Gary Tudahl and his wife, Joyce, Berthold, Ron Tudahl and his wife, Beth, Post Falls, ID, Tony Tudahl and his wife, Karen, Des Lacs, Keith Tudahl, Berthold and Brady Tudahl and his wife, Brenda, Minot. 13 grandchildren; Scott Tudahl, Shannon Tudahl, Joshua Tudahl, Chris Gray, Kyle Tudahl, Tyler Tudahl, Brandon Gray and Hayden Tudahl, Stephanie Godinez and her husband, Juan, Jessica Tudahl, Sarah Tudahl and Ashley Tudahl; one great grandchild Kayla Tudahl; one sister, Emily Haaland of Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter, Jennifer Tudahl; three brothers, Oscar, Donald and Gaylord Tudahl.

Diana Lou Turrin, 52, 1014 Arthur Lane, Minot, died Tuesday, November 7, 2000, in a Minot medical center.
Diana was born October 17, 1948, in Minot, the daughter of Marvin and Lilly (Hanson) Clementich. She was raised in Burlington and educated in Burlington and Des Lacs and graduated from Des Lacs High School.
She moved to Minot for a time and was once married to Ken VanSickle. She moved to Ohio where she lived for 18 years, before returning to Minot in 1988. In 1990 she began employment at Terhorst Mfg., Minot, where she worked until the time of her death.
She was a member of the Women of the Moose, Minot.
Survivors: Son, Greg VanSickle, Minot; daughter, Sandy Enander and her husband Randy, Mohall; four grandchildren, Alex, Koltin, Riley and Callie Enander; parents, Marvin and Lilly Clementich, Burlington; sister, Carol Newman, Minot; brothers, Marvin Clementich and his wife Barbara, Minot, and Curtis Clementich and his wife Nancy, Karlsruhe; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

Albina Tyra - - 1906 - 2000
Albina Tyra, 94, 700 33 Avenue SE, Minot, died Friday, June 23, 2000, in a Minot foster care home.
She was born May 3, 1906, in Montgomery, MN to John and Albina (Kuchinka) Hanzal. At an early age, she moved with her family to Parshall, ND where they homesteaded. In 1925, she graduated from Plaza High School. She then moved to Minneapolis, MN to attend business college and later went on to work as a stenographer. On January 5, 1929, she married Louis Tyra. They lived in Minneapolis until her husband died in November 1967. The following September 1968, she returned to Parshall and in 1980 she moved into a retirement home there. In 1989 she moved to Minot where she lived until the time of her death.
She was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot, ND.
She is survived by many nieces, nephews and loved ones.
Funeral Service: Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND.
Visitation: One hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
Burial: St. Bridget's Cemetery, Parshall, North Dakota

Oliver Ulsrud, 87, Mesa, AZ, formerly of Columbus, died Sunday, May 7, 2000 in Mesa.
Services will be held in Mesa, AZ on Thursday, May 11, 2000.
Graveside service will be on Wednesday, May 17, 2000, at 11:00 a.m. at First Lutheran Cemetery, Columbus, ND.

Milo Clarence Undhjem - - 1917 - 2000
Milo Clarence Undhjem 83, 305 8th Ave. NE, Minot, ND, formerly of the Powers Lake area, died Saturday, December 30, 2000, in a Minot nursing home.
He was born June 26, 1917, the son of Melvin and Cora (Olson) Undhjem in rural Columbus. He was reared and educated in the Columbus area.
He married Nina Lundstad in 1962, in Columbus, ND.
He owned and operated Undhjem Trucking for a number of years. He managed the Stampede Elevator in rural Columbus for over 29 years. He owned and operated the M&N Bar and Lounge in Powers Lake for many years. In 1985, Nina (Lundstad) Undhjem died. In 1994, Milo went to live with his daughter Michelle in Minot. He entered Trinity Nursing Home in 1997, where he lived until his death.
He was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Powers Lake. He was very active in the Powers Lake community.
Survivors: daughter Michelle Zuck and her husband Neal, Minot; grandsons, Donavan, Adam, Wyatt Zuck; granddaughter, Hayley Zuck all of Minot; Brother, Allen Undhjem, Columbus; numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Funeral Service: Wednesday, January 3, 2001, at 11 a.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, Powers Lake,.
Prayer Service: Tuesday, January 2, 2001, at 7 p.m. the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Powers Lake.
Visitation: Tuesday, January 2, 2001, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Powers Lake.

John V. Valker - - 1924 - 2001
John F. Valker, 76, 2519 2nd Ave. SW, Minot, died Saturday, February 10, 2001 in a Minot medical center.
He was born on November 13, 1924, in Minot, ND, the son of George, Sr. and Helen (Fisk) Valker. He was raised and educated in Minot, and graduated from Minot High School in 1942. He entered the United States Navy, and served four years in World War II. He was honorably discharged from the Navy, and returned to North Dakota. He moved to Dickinson, ND, and was instrumental in the design and start up of Radio Station KDIX, in Dickinson. He was called by the Naval Reserves, and returned to serve in the Korean Conflict as an electronics technician. He met Miyoko Haruki when he was in Japan, and they were married on September 19, 1952, at the American Consulate in Yokohama, Japan. They returned to North Dakota, and John worked as a floral designer with his brother, George, at Valker Floral Shop on Main Street in Minot. He also specialized as an electronic repair technician, working on radios and color televisions. He provided service for area radio stations, including KHRT and KCJB, and TV repair shops in Minot. He retired in 1981.
John attended First Presbyterian Church, Minot. He was a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge for 52 years. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion, both of Minot. . He received his amateur HAM radio operator's license at the age of 14. He was a member of the Minot Amateur Radio Operators and the Silver Connection.
Survivors: wife, Miyoko Valker, Minot; brother, Henry W. Valker and his wife, Agnes, World Dale, Il; sisters, Elaine Youngbeck, Minot, and Mary Janicki and her husband, Robert, Minot. Eight nieces and nephews, John and Gerald Youngbeck, Greg Valker, Mary Draper, Geoff Valker, Rob Janicki, Gail McNulty, and Mary Newberg. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, George, Jr.
Funeral: Thursday, at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, Minot, ND
Burial: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot, ND

Hubert L. Vandeberg - - 1910 - 2000
Hubert L. Vandeberg, 90, 309 1st Ave. East, Velva, died Friday, October 13, 2000, in a Minot medical center.
He was born September 15, 1910, in rural Orrin, ND, the son of Hubert and Mary (Kahler) Vandeberg. He was reared in the Orrin, Fessenden and Anamoose areas.
He married E. Marie Hammer on October 29, 1940, in Minot, ND. The couple made there home in the Velva, ND, area where Hubert was employed with the Consolidated Coal Mining Company.
Hubert retired from Consolidated Coal in 1973. Marie died in April of 1984. He continued to live in Velva up until his death.
He was a member of St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Velva and the United MineWorkers.
Survivors: sons, Merle Vandeberg and his companion Lorraine Berger, Mandan, ND and Chester Vandeberg, Velva, ND; daughters, Bonnie Dahl and her husband Richard, Phoenix, AZ, Della Jane McIntyre and her husband Marty, Minot, ND and Debbie Martin and her husband Garland, Fargo, ND, foster daughter, Ramona (Sunny) Keller, Milwaukee, WI; 12 grandchildren, Kathy, Kari and Michael Dahl, Rocky, Donna and Marc Vandeberg, Michael and Michelle Keller, Clancy and Megan McIntyre and Tayler and Jared Martin; 11 great-grandchildren; sisters, Della Birr, Velva, ND, Barbara Ave, Minot, ND, Gert Bearman, Portland, OR. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marie, two infant sons, Dennis Lee and George Henry Vandeberg, parents, brothers, Henry and Joe and sisters Elizabeth and Mary.
Hubert had many special interests but he especially loved fishing, gardening, farming and taking care of his pets.
Mass of Christian Burial: Tuesday, October 17, 2000, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Cecelia Catholic Church, Velva.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be offered Monday, October 16, 2000, at 8 p.m. at the Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Velva.

Leslie W. Van Horn - - 1926 - 2001
Leslie W. Van Horn, 75, Maxbass, died Friday, April 13, 2001 in a Minot medical center
He was born on April 1, 1926, in rural Eckman, ND, the son of Sandy and Carrie (Fals) Van Horn. He was raised and attended Lewis Country School through the eighth grade. After his schooling, he worked on his parent's farm for a time. He served in the United States Army Reserve from December, 1950 to December, 1952. He was honorably discharged from the Army, and returned to the family farm in Lewis Township, Bottineau County, where he farmed with his brother, Earl, for his entire life. He had recently moved to Minot, and was living in a nursing at the time of his death.
Survivors: Brother, Earl Van Horn and wife Peggy, Maxbass, ND; sister, Marion Rosenthal, Minot; numerous nieces and nephews also survive. His parents preceded him in death.
Funeral Service: A private family service will be held.
Burial: North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND

Diane E. Vanlaningham - - 1950 - 2000
Diane E. Vanlaningham, 50, 622 8th Ave. NE, Minot, died Wednesday, June 7, 2000, at her residence after a battle with cancer.
She was born April 26, 1950, in Minot, the daughter of Mark F. and Elaine Purdy. She was reared and educated in Minot and graduated from Minot High School in 1968. She attended Minot State University and Minot Business College.
She met Robert Vanlaningham in April of 1969, and the couple was married in December of that year in Minot. After their son, Jeff was born in September of 1970, they moved to Atlanta, Georgia, for a short time and then returned to Minot.
Diane was employed with Minot State University, FAA, and the Production Credit Association before she went to work at North Central Human Service Center as an administrative assistant. In November of 1979, they had their second child, Sarah.
In December of 1999, Diane and Bob celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. In August of that same year she rejoiced in the birth of her first grandchild, Mark Wilson Vanlaningham, the son of Jeff and Heidi Vanlaningham
Her mother Elaine died in 1989.
Diane loved traveling, reading, the arts, and she had a strong and active interest in matters that affected people. Her real passion was her family.
She will be dearly missed and will be remembered always in our hearts.
Survivors: husband, Robert Vanlaningham, Minot; son, Jeff Vanlaningham, Fargo; daughter, Sarah Vanlaningham, Minot; grandson, Mark Wilson Vanlaningham; father, Mark F. and his wife Clarice Purdy; brother, Michael J. Purdy, Minot. Numerous other family members also survive her.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 10, 2000, at 10 a.m. at St. Leo's Catholic Church, Minot. Immediately following the service everyone is invited to join with the family for lunch and fellowship at the Ramada Inn located at 2315 North Broadway, Minot.
According to her wishes Diane was cremated but friends may sign a register book on Friday, June 9, 2000, from noon until 8:30 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
There will be a prayer service on Friday, June 9, 2000 at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home Chapel, Minot.

Agnes Vien - - 1907 - 2000
Agnes Vien, 92, 305 8 Ave NE, Minot, formerly of Flaxton, ND, died Thursday, December 7, 2000, in a Minot Medical Center.
She was born December 20, 1907, on the family homestead near Flaxton, ND, the daughter of John and Amanda (Myhre) Vien. She contracted polio at the age of two. She attended school in Flaxton through the eighth grade. She spent a lot of her time crocheting, painting pictures and doing applique work. She won many awards for her talents. She moved to the Henry Towers in Minot in 1989, and entered the Trinity Nursing Home in 1995.
She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Flaxton.
Survivors: Niece, Marilyn Vien, Denton, TX; sister-in-law, Esther Vien, Columbus ND; four great-nephews and one great-niece; several cousins; caregiver, Connie Gustafson, Minot. She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Joseph Vien, stepfather, Hjalmer Slotsve, and niece, Lavon Vien-Rogers.
Funeral: Tuesday, December 12, 2000 at 1:00 pm at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot, ND
Visitation: Saturday, December 9, 2000 from noon until 5:00 at Thompson-Larson Funeral Home, Minot.
Burial: Flaxton Community Cemetery in the spring.
