FRANKLINTON - Mark Sylvest, age 19, died yesterday morning at Medical Center of Louisiana in New Orleans.
He was injured early Wednesday in an automobile accident near Grand Isle.

Thomas B. Varnado
(Died December 1, 1998)
DENHAM SPRINGS - Thomas B. Varnado, age 74, died Tuesday at his home in Denham Springs.
He was born Jan. 22, 1924 in Bogalusa. After serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II, he became a career postal employee. He retired in 1984 as supervisor of contracts management, Southern Region.
He was a member of Broadmoor United Methodist Church and Cacia Shrine Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Chesney Varnado of Denham Springs; four children, Gayle Oliver of Richmond, VA, Michael Varnado of Baton Rouge, Vicky Hayes of Meridian, MS, and Vaughn Varnado of Baton Rouge; four grandchildren; five sisters, Jerri Stafford of Overland Park, KS, Paulda Quine of Charlston, TN, Algie Griffith of Nashville, TN, Lorelle Hill of Tylertown, MS, and Juette Cooper of Franklinton; and two brothers, James Varnado and Earl Varnado, both of Franklinton.
Visitation was held at Rabenhorst Funeral Home East of Baton Rouge Wednesday from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. and continued yesterday at 9 a.m.
The funeral was held yesterday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Bob Burgess officiated.
Honorary pallbearers were Bob Allen, Barney Babin, Wilbur Rogers, Garrett Lynch, Lewis Rogers, and Jerry Nelson.
Memorial contributions may be made to Broadmoor United Methodist Church, Louisiana Naval War Memorial Foundation of Cancer services of Greater Baton Rouge.

FRANKLINTON Earnest Clark, 57, died Sunday, at his residence in Franklinton.

Grace Dillon - (Died February 10, 1999)
BOGALUSA - Grace Dillon, age 101, a resident of Bogalusa died February 10, 1999, at the Bogalusa Community Medical Center.
Dillon is survived by one grandson, Bobby Dillon of Baton Rouge; two granddaughters, Kay Gunn of Baton Rouge and Sylvia Anne Michel of Houma; one sister, Myrtis Miller of Baton Rouge.
She is preceded in death by her husband, R O Dillon; her son, Vernon Dillon; her daughter, Pauline Williams; her sister Beulah Stewart and her brother Edgar Bickham.
Visitation will be held at the Poole-Richie Funeral Home today from 5 p m - 9 p m.
Funeral services will be held at the Poole-Richie Chapel tomorrow at 11 a m with the Rev.
Calvin Baldwin officiating.

BOGALUSA - Dennie Earline Holland, 72, a resident of Isabel, died at the Bogalusa Community Medical Center.
Mrs. Holland retired from crown Zellerbach, Mutiwall Division as an inspector She served as Sunday school secretary of the True Light Baptist Church in Isabel She also was on the hospitality committee of the William Allision Holland family reunion In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the True Light Baptist Church or American Red Cross Flood Victims.
Holland is survived by her husband, John Nelves Holland; three sons and two daughter-in-laws, James Ardell (Catherine) Holland of Walker, Gary Wayne (Cynthia) Holland of Pierre Port, John Gregory Holland of Bogalusa; two daughters and one son-in-law, Joycelyn Paulette (Al) Goudeau of Montpellier, Donna Lynn Rushing of Albany; two sisters, Theo Watts Carpenter of Baton Rouge, LA, Oma Lee Galloway Roche of Zachery, LA; one brother, Wendell Galloway of Isabel; nine grandchildren, Kevin Miller, Kendall Miller, J Ardell Holland Jr , Jonathan Holland, Chris Williams, Christina Rushing, Kelly and Denise Holland of Pierre Port, Spring Holland; and two great grandchildren, Kelsey and Katlin Miller.

FRANKLINTON - Russell E Magee, 74, died Thursday at St Tammany Hospital in Covington.
Magee was a retired teacher and supervisor with the Washington Parish Schools and a U S.
Marine veteran Second Division of World War II.
He is survived by two sons, Archie and Sam; three daughters, Audrey, Kathy and Margaret; two brothers, Jake Magee of Pine, Hamp Magee of Madison, AL; two sisters, Patsy Kistner of New Orleans, Kaye Magee of Port Allen.
Visitation will be at Crain Funeral Home from 5 p m until 10 p m Saturday and after 10 a m.

NICHOLASVILLE - Theodore R Pearson, 79, died Wednesday at Baptist Hospital East.
Pearson was a native of Walthall County, MS , a retired social worker for Wisconsin and an Army veteran of World War II.
He is survived in death by one daughter, Diana L Wagner; one son, Theodore R Pearson Jr ; one brother, Lonzo Pearson; two sisters Dr Dorothy Pearson and Eliza Wharton; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Jessie Pittman Williams - (Died February 12, 1999)
VARNADO - Jessie Pittman Williams, 89, died Friday at Forrest General in Hattisburg, MS.
Williams is survived by two sons and daughter-in-laws, Marvin Nelson (Gwen) Williams of Woodstock, VA, Micheal (Mary) Williams of Varnado; two daughters and one son-in-law, Deloris Scott of Baton Rouge, Carolyn (Jay) Kelly of Varnado; three sisters, Beulah Miley, Velma Seals both of Bogalusa, Lela Bishop of Pascagoula, MS; one brother, Wilson Pittman of Bogalusa; fourteen grandchildren; and numerous other relatives and friends.
Williams was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Williams; one daughter Lanell Lewis; two grandchildren, Larry Boyd, Adam Williams; and one son-in-law, George Scott.

Rev. Reuben Howard Cornist - (Died Tuesday, February 9, 1999)
MT HERMON - Rev. Reuben Howard Cornist, 77, died Tuesday at Riverside Medical Center.
Rev. Cornist was born on February 16, 1921 in Waverly, to the late Percy and Lenora Scott Cornist He received his education for the public schools of Madison Parish Upon graduation from high school, he attended Southern University, however, his education was interrupted by a call to military duty to serve in World War II After serving in the military he returned to Southern University and continued his studies obtaining a B S degree in Agriculture Education in 1947 Rev. Cornist later obtained a Masters plus 30 hours above in Administration from Southern and Southeastern Louisiana Universities.
In 1948 he accepted a position as Agriculture teacher at the Vernon High School.
He served as Principal of Vernon High School from 1955 to 1969 After the closing of Vernon, he served as Assistant Principal of Mt Hermon High School from 1969 to 1974 He served as Supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance and Supervisor of Transportation for the Washington Parish School System from 1974 to 1980.
He was the Pastor of the Oak Grove Baptist Church in Franklinton and the Mt Gillion Baptist Church in Arcola.
Rev. Cornist was the first black licensed Nursing Home Administration in Washington Parish and the surrounding areas He served as administrator of the Good Samaritans Nursing Home from 1987 to 1997.
He was a past member of the Franklinton Chamber of Commerce; a veteran of World War II; a member of the NAACP; and Commander of Otis-Burris Post #537 of the American Legion He was a member of the Washington Parish Fair Association He was a past member and 1st vice- president of the Washington-St Tammany Electric Coop He was a member and President of the Folsom Community Ministerial Alliance President of the Evangelical Board of the Third District Bogue Chitto Baptist Association He was Assistant Secretary of the Louisiana Home and Foreign Mission Baptist State Convention He was the 3rd vice-president of the Pastors Conference of the Louisiana Home and Foreign Mission Baptist State Convention He was a licensed Funeral Director and a member of the National Funeral Directors Association.
He leaves to mourn his untimely passing; a loving, caring and devoted wife, Dorothy Elaine of Mt Hermon; one devoted daughter, Carol C Durgan; a fine son-in-law, Minister Lynell Durgan; one sweet grand-daughter, Autumn Nakiya Durgan all of Spring Valley; one sister, Ollie L.
Cornist of Tallulah; five sisters-in-law, Mona (Edwin) Anderson and Gail (Harry) Gethers of Los Angeles, Mae Barnes of Franklinton, Marvene B Branham of Seattle, and Cornelia Barnes of Baton Rouge; five brothers-in-law, Bobbie Barnes of Seattle, Phil K (Louise) Barnes and John H Barnes of Franklinton, Jim (Mary) Barnes of Bogalusa, and Neil Branham of Seattle; five God-children, Dr Bryce (Rebecca) Jackson of Panama City, Ms Michele Martin of Jackson, Ms.

John Douglas Hooker - (Died February 14, 1999)
NEW CITY - John Douglas Hooker died Sunday at the Nyack Hospital in Nyack, NY.
Hooker was born in Hartford on November 30, 1916 He attended school in Newington He owned the Sunoco Service Station in Newington for many years In 1954 he moved to Naples Florida where he owned and operated a glass installation business In 1978 he returned north living in New City.
Hooker served in World War II in the United States Navy He was a member of the Newington Fire Department, The Mason Organization in Newington, active in the Moose Organization while residing in Naples and a member of Post 1682 of the New City American Veterans.
He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Richard (Sue) Vokes of Nanuet, Mrs. Robert (Lyn) Pigott of Bogalusa, Ms Carol J Hooker of Covington; six grandchildren Christine Vokes and Heather Vokes of Nanuet, Kathy Pigott Wheat of Crossroads, Nancy Pigott Pace, Barbara Pigott Miley, and R Douglas Pigott of Bogalusa; six great-grandchildren; and a niece, Bonnie Hooer of Manchester.
He was preceded in death by his brother, William Lester Hooker of Manchester.
Services will be held at the Michael J Higgins Funeral Home in New City, Wednesday at 10 a m.

Ellis M Lee - (Died February 13, 1999)
FRANKLINTON - Ellis M Lee, 79, a resident of Franklinton, died Saturday at Riverside Medical Center.
Lee was owner/operator for many years of Lee's Body Shop and later retired as maintenance supervisor for Riverside Medical Center He was a World War II veteran of the U S Army and a member of the Clifton Baptist Church.
He was a past master of Franklinton Masonic Lodge #101; a member of Jerusalem Temple Shrine and also served as District Deputy Grand Master of Grand Lodge of Louisiana.
Lee is survived by his wife, Kathleen Dykes Lee of Franklinton; one son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth and Elois Lee of Franklinton; one daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Wayne Fleming of Franklinton; three step-children and their spouses, Joey and Missy Primes of Slidell, Cathy and Gary Dufrene of Franklinton, Janice and Steve Kincade of Brookhaven; four grandchildren, Ellis Lee of Dawson Creek, Michelle Fleming of Fort Meade, Mathew and Mitch Fleming both of Franklinton; three great-grandchildren; fourteen step-grandchildren; twelve step- great-grandchildren; and a half brother, W A Lee of Seattle.

BOGALUSA - Tommy Walters, 53, a resident of Bogalusa died last Thursday at Lakeview Medical Center in Covington Walters is survived by his wife Susan Browne Walters of Bogalusa; mother, Erma Strickland Walters; a son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Stacy Walters of Bogalusa; and a grandchild, Stephanie.
Walters was preceded in death by his father, Leonard Tyler Walters.
