Richard E. ‘Dick’ Werner
Richard E. “Dick” Werner died Nov. 8, 2003, in the Hospice of St. John in Denver, from brain cancer.
He was born to Talt and Viola Werner Jan. 9, 1928, in Saguache County.
Mr. Werner was a water well driller and excavating contractor in the Buena Vista and Fairplay area for more than 30 years.
He served in the Army in Korea from 1950-52.
Mr. Werner is survived by his wife of 49 years, Pat; children, Alicia Werner, Fort Collins; Kevin Werner, Centerville, Mass. and Peter Werner, Fairplay; grandchildren, Dust-in Boyer, Kristin Werner, Curtis Werner, Will Werner, Hanna Werner and Graham Werner; sisters, Elizabeth Hazard, Saguache and Elvira Telinde, Monte Vista; brother, Jack Werner of Farmington, N.M.; nephew, John Werner, Moffat and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by brothers, Charles and Edward Werner and Loyal Morgan and sister, Easter Dickinson.
Mr. Werner will be buried Wednesday in Buena Vista.
It is the wish of Mr. Werner’s family that memorial contributions be made to Hospice of St. John, 1320 Everett Court, Lakewood, CO 80215.

Wayne Gilleland
Wayne Gilleland, 57, died Nov.13, 2003, in Beverly Hills, Calif. He was born Jan. 5, 1946, in Norfolk, Va.
He is survived by his mother, Marjorie D. Gilleland, father John E. Gilleland, sister, Jane Newman and her husband, Ron Newman, all of Nathrop; his children, Leabeth Gilleland, of Mankato, Minn.; Carly Gilleland, Haysen Gilleland and Zak Gilleland, all of Chapel Hill, N. C.; grandson Gabe Gilleland of Mankato, Minn., and niece, Ashley Mosely, Little Rock, Ark.
Mr. Gilleland was a 1963 graduate of Hall High School in Little Rock, Ark., and a 1967 graduate of Hendrix College in Conway, Ark.
He served in the Air Force assigned to Clark Air Force Base in the Philippine Islands and later as a radio communications technician for Air Force I. He was honorably discharged in 1972.
Mr. Gilleland moved to Monticello, Ark. where he opened Mr. G Men’s Clothing Store. He operated the store until 1985 when he entered the investment business in Little Rock, with E.F. Hutton Co.
He worked in other states in the investment business and was living in Beverly Hills when he died.
Mr. Gilleland was a member of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church and was a leader in Boy Scout Troop 12. As a Boy Scout, he was an Eagle Scout and received the “God and Country Award.”
He was an avid golfer and sports fan and was active in coaching his children in sports activities. Gilleland cherished the time he spent with his children and grandson.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Pulaski Heights United Meth-odist Church, Little Rock, Ark., followed by a reception at the church.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Troop 12, Boy Scouts of America, Pulaski Heights United Meth-odist Church, P.O. Box 250768, Little Rock, AR 72205; or H.I.R.E. Inc., a non-profit org-anization assisting people with disabilities to achieve independence and employment.
The H.I.R.E. Inc. address is 5919 H St., Little Rock, AR 72205.
Arrangements are through Ruebel Funeral Home of Little Rock.

Della M. (Rendon) Coscarella
Mrs. Della M. (Rendon) Cos-carella, a native of Salida, died at Columbine Manor Care Center Nov. 15, 2003.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Coscarella; son, Eddie and daughter, Molly.
Survivors include her brothers, Bibian Rendon and Man-uel Rendon and their families of Salt Lake City, Utah; son, James, and daughter, Alice, of Salida; son-in-law, Bob Diggins, Salt Lake City and numerous grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Memorial Estates in Salt Lake City.
Local arrangements were handled by Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Eva L. Kelley Epperson
Eva L. Kelley Epperson, 82, Howard, died Nov. 15, 2003, in Denver.
She was born Sept. 5, 1921, in Sapulpa, Okla., a daughter of the late James and Ruth (Osborne) Eldredge.
Mrs. Epperson was a homemaker and mother. She loved to read, garden and crochet and enjoyed making afghans as Christmas presents for her family.
Survivors include her husband, Olan H. Epperson, of the family home; children, Patrick Kelley of Howard, Karen (Jim) Foster of Howard, Michael (Rebecca) Kelley of Iron Mountain, Jim Epperson of Howard and Janelle (Jim) Wiley, Port Orchard, Wash.; grandchildren, Jeff Harris, Sean Kelley, Erin Kelley, Brennan Kelley, Jolene Ervin, Myra (Jeremey) Foster Smith, Johnna (Maury) Miller and Jim (Chelsea) Goodwin and great-grandchildren, Madison and Ryan Smith, Keldyn Miller, Dustin Harris, Ryanne and Brandon Ervin, Willow Mize and Bradley and Gavin Kelley.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Lewis Kelley in 1975; two sisters and three brothers.
Visitation will be from 2-7 p.m. today at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home in Salida. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home Chapel and interment will follow at Howard Cemetery, Howard.
Arrangements are through Holt Family Funeral Home, Cañon City.

Michael J. Bogert
Michael J. Bogert, 47, Salida, died Nov. 14, 2003, in Penrose Hospital.
He moved to Salida in 1997 to be in the mountains to be close to fishing and camping, which he loved.
Mr. Bogert was preceded in death by his parents, Bob Bogert and Evelyn Lowe.
He is survived by a sister, Patty Apple, Thornton; step-brothers, William R. Graves Sr., Salida; Robert L. Graves Sr., Del Norte; Larry D. Graves Sr., Pagosa Springs; Jim Block, Commerce City and Terry Taylor, Pagosa Springs; stepsister, Brenda Bird, Denver and many nieces and nephews.
Mr. Bogert was cremated and a memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Dec. 6 at 622 Vine St., Salida.

Callista River Eliades Brian
Callista River Eliades Brian, 43, Villa Grove, died Nov. 18, 2003, at the San Luis Valley Regional Medical Center in Alamosa.
She was born Feb. 22, 1960, in Ayer, Mass., to J. Edward and Priscilla (Edes) Eliades.
Mrs. Brian graduated from Sterling College in Vermont in 1981. She was in college studying naturopathy.
She owned and operated Sapphire Sky Design, where she designed jewelry.
Mrs. Brian was a strong believer in women’s rights and environmental studies.
She enjoyed going on walks, exercising and spending time with her children and the mountains.
Mrs. Brian was a past member of the Villa Grove Fire Department and designed and had built her own straw bale home which was a lifelong dream.
Mrs. Brian is survived by her parents, J. Edward and Priscilla Eliades, Hanover, N.H.; husband, Sam Brian; son, Sam Brian Jr.; daughter, Alexis Brian, all of Villa Grove; great-grandmother, Barbara Eliades, Ayer, Mass. and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Viewing will be from 4-8 p.m. Saturday at the Villa Grove Church. Services are set for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Villa Grove Church.

Beatrice ‘Bea’ R. Cato
Beatrice “Bea” R. Cato died Sept. 26, 2003, in Fort Collins.
She was born Dec. 14, 1907, in Fort Steele, Wyo., to John H. Roberts and Ella Mae Roberts. She was raised in Grass Creek and Coalville, Utah.
Mrs. Cato graduated from the University of Utah in 1927 with a bachelor’s degree in education. She taught school in North Summit County, Utah; Leadville and Sterling, and retired from teaching in the Salida School District in 1972.
She married Vernon Cato June 1, 1931. He preceded her in death in 1981.
Mrs. Cato is survived by her children, Pat Hogan, Moreno Valley, Calif.; Lyz Lockwood, Fort Collins; Robert H. Cato, Ogden, Utah; grandchildren, Verna Watkins, Moreno Valley, Calif.; Steve Lockwood, Fort Collins; Susan Sullivan, Mod-esto, Calif. and Leslie Smith, Fort Collins; 13 great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Her family wants to thank the staff at Columbine Care Center West and Hospice of Larimer County for their love, support and help.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Christ United Methodist Church, 301 E. Drake Rd., Fort Collins.
A family graveside service will be conducted at Fairview Cemetery in Salida at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of Larimer County or a charity of choice, in care of Bohlender Funeral Chapel, 121 W. Olive St., Fort Collins, CO 80524.

Claudia M. Witcher
Claudia M. Witcher died Sept. 23, 2003, at her home in Greeley from prolonged medical complications.
She was born Feb. 23, 1954, in Lander, Wyo., to Bill and Faith Witcher and was the granddaughter of the late Merle Wall, Salida.
Ms. Witcher grew up in Denver and attended public schools. She later married Don Burkle of Denver and had two children.
She was an avid crocheter and enjoyed sewing.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Don.
Ms. Witcher is survived by her children, Casey Burkle, Boise, Idaho and Alicia Condiff, San Diego, Calif.; two granddaughters; sisters, Sue (Dan) Gutierrez, Salida and Wyola (Dave) Robitalle, Fairplay; brothers, Clyde Witcher, Casper, Wyo.; Clint Witcher, Casper, Wyo. and Arlo Witcher, Denver and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and a longtime companion, Bernard Lybeck, Denver.
Cremation will take place and a private memorial service is planned for the family later this week.

Pete Russell Apple
Pete Russell Apple, 53, Lamar, died Sept. 26, 2003, in Lamar.
He is survived by his wife, Annette (Vigil) Apple, Lamar; sons, Zerrel, Greeley and Zach, Fort Collins; in-laws, Tony and Virginia Vigil, Salida; brothers-in-law, Andrew (Vickie Sue) Vigil, Salida and Tony (Vanessa) Vigil, Bernallilo, N.M.; sister-in-law, Arlene (Lee) Rogers, Lamar and numerous nephews, nieces and other family members.
A private family memorial was held Monday at Peacock Funeral Home in Lamar.

Marion Lorene Bovee
Marion Lorene Bovee, formerly of Salida and Yuma, Ariz., died Sept. 26, 2003.
She was born July 27, 1919, in Leadville.
Her husband, Elmer, and sisters, Harriet and Irene “Sis,” preceded her in death.
Survivors include her brother, Bill; sons, Larry and Leslie, five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A family service will be held today at Wescott Funeral Home in Cottonwood, Ariz.
Interment will be in Yuma.

Adrian Winsor Rose
Adrian Winsor Rose, 92, died Sept. 30, 2003, at home in Poncha Springs.
He was born in Red Bank, N.J., Sept. 21, 1911, to William S. and Eva E. Rose. He was raised on the family farm and tree nursery as one of 12 children.
Mr. Rose graduated from Red Bank High School and married Dagmar M. Johnson May 5, 1938, in New York City by a Swedish Lutheran pastor.
To this marriage were born three children, Christine Wolcott, Audrey Winsor and Stephen Ewen. His family was raised in Monmouth Beach, N.J.
Mr. Rose was employed in a variety of positions during his working years, with the greatest portion spent working for the Jersey Central Railroad and in several sales positions. In retirement, he and his wife lived in Granville, Ohio, Pueblo and in Florida.
He was a man of integrity, humor and a true Christian gentleman. He loved reading, music, the out-of-doors, good food, and most of all – his family.
Mr. Rose is survived by his daughter, Christine Richardson, her husband, Wilbur; Christine’s three children, Lisa Monro-Cline, Megan (Eric) Golla and Peter Monro; daughter, Audrey Ebner, her husband, Chet, their sons, Mark (Kris), Jeff, David, Seth, Joshua and Jeremy; his son, Stephen; nine great-grandchildren and one sister, Elva Wolcott.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; sisters, Grace and Vera; brothers, Vernon, Elmer, Wilford, Elton, Nelson, Melvin, Raymond and Theodore.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Oct. 18 at The United Methodist Church of Salida.
The family appreciates gifts to the church or the Angel of Shavano Hospice.

Cleo Mary Lucero
Cleo Mary Lucero, 85, formerly of Salida, died Nov. 24, 2003, at St. Anthony Hospital in Denver.
Mrs. Lucero was born Dec. 5,1917, in Cotton Creek, to Donald F. and Beatrice (Garcia) Vigil.
Mrs. Lucero was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Anthony Lucero.
She is survived by her children, Dorothy (Frank) Maestas, Lorraine Lucero, Patricia (Silas) Carriaga, Thomas (Gwen) Lucero, Margaret Lucero, Theresa Lucero and Lawrence Lucero; 16 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Ben (Clara) Vigil, Ernest (Bertha) Vigil, Rudolf (Dorothy) Vigil and sisters Patricia (Toby) Trujillo, Cordi Salazar and Virginia Renninger.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary is set for 7 p.m. Friday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial is set for 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Salida.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Richard Lewis Hawkins
Richard Lewis Hawkins died Oct. 10, 2003, in Taos, N.M.
He was born in Glendale, Calif., on May 30, 1957.
After college he moved to Salida.
Mr. Hawkins was a builder of homes, an artist and an outfitter. He lived on the land he holds dear to his heart; Steele Canyon in the Sangre de Cristo mountains of Southern Colorado.
Survivors include his mother, Andrea Carpenter and his father, Joseph Carpenter; son, Colter Grey Hawkins; wife, Jeni; sister, Lizabeth; brother, Diego; nephew, Cody James; step-sister, Dawn Fykes and husband, Pat; niece, Brittney Fykes; brother, Chuck Haw-kins and his family and num-erous friends and extended family.
Services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church in Salida and at noon Sunday on Rick’s mountain.
Flowers may be sent to Joseph and Andrea Carpenter, 12755 Riverview Drive, Salida, CO 81201.

Angelo Frank Cardinelli
Angelo Frank Cardinelli, 79, life time Salida resident, died Oct. 14, 2003, at Kindred Hospital in Denver.
Mr. Cardinelli was born Jan. 10, 1924, in Salida to Joseph and Rose (Renda) Cardinelli.
He married Donna Sniff in 1949 in Kermit, Texas.
Mr. Cardinelli served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He retired from the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad in 1982 and at one time worked for Martin Marrietta.
Mr. Cardinelli enjoyed fishing, hunting, gathering mushrooms on Monarch and making sausage and eggplant.
He sang and played the guitar with Jim Warner, Doc Oberly, Tony Carroch, Ed Haffy and Jim Cardinelli.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and Salida Elks Lodge No. 808.
Mr. Cardinelli is survived by his sons, Angelo (Cindy) Cardinelli Jr., Hasty; Donald (Kathy) Cardinelli, McClave and Jimmy (Shawn) Cardinelli, Hasty; daughter-in-law, Debbie Cardinelli, McClave; brother, Jim Cardinelli, Salida; sister, Susie Reno, Salida; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Joe Cardinelli; sisters, Jenny Runco, Mary Gentile and Helen Fear.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1-4 p.m. today at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Funeral notice: Angelo Frank Cardinelli
Mass of Christian Burial for Angelo Frank Cardinelli was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Fr. Henry Grodecki, C.M. was the celebrant. Musicians were Georgianna Smith and Jeanne Kostelic.
Musical selections were “Amazing Grace,” “As The Deer Longs,” “I Am The Bread Of Life” and “On Eagle’s Wings.”
Pallbearers were Jimmy Lee Gentile, Tommy Reno, Carl Reno, Larry Fear, Tho-mas Cardinelli and Nathan Cardinelli.
Honorary pallbearers were Butch Gentile, Frank Gentile, Joey Gentile, Mike Aichele, Noel Cardinelli, John Poyser, Greg Rodrick, Billy Fear and Phillip Fear.
Interment was at Fairview Cemetery.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Francia E. Shonk
Francia E. Shonk, 57, Salida, died Oct. 16, 2003, at Mariner Health Care in Denver.
She moved to Salida in 1995.
Ms. Shonk devoted 19 years to helping the senior citizens while working at the Area Agency on Aging.
She is survived by her daughters, Lisa Siragusa, Denver; Danielle Dworak, Denver; Bobbi Jo Shonk, Salida and Gina (Michael) Summers, Las Vegas, Nev.; son, John Patrick Shonk Jr., Ohio; grandchildren, April and Jacob Summers, Las Vegas, Nev., Justin Willis, Alamosa and Ian Salazar, Salida.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Temple Baptist Church, Salida.
Flowers and contributions to Ms. Shonk’s favorite charity, St. Judes, are welcomed.
