Gladys Heister Parke
Salida native Gladys Heister Parke, 85, died Jan. 7, 2004, in Corvallis, Ore.
She was born March 2, 1918, in Salida, in a log cabin built by her father, Gil Heister, on Oak Street. He was a cowboy, hunter and contractor who settled in Colorado in 1881.
Her mother, Lena Purdom Heister, died when Gladys was 3 years old, and Gil devoted himself to raising their seven children: Hollis, Clyde, Do-lores, Cleo, Elwood, Bunny and Gladys, the youngest.
The seven children, beginning with Hollis, born in 1900, were all raised in Salida and played a part in Salida’s history through the 1900s. Many of their offspring live in the Salida area. Family members still live in the Oak Street log cabin, now covered with brick, and the original Gil Heister homestead, east of Salida, remains in the family.
Mrs. Parke graduated from Salida High School in 1936.
She was a member of the Twiddle Twaddle Twelve, a group of 12 girls who sponsored high school social functions and have remained friends through the years.
After high school, she worked as society editor at the Salida Mountain Mail and as an usherette at the movie theater.
She entered nursing school in Pueblo, graduating in 1940. While working at Denver General Hospital, she fell in love with a young doctor, Fred Parke, whom she married Dec. 31, 1941.
Together they raised five children as they moved to Rochester, Minn., Longview, Wash. and San Bernardino, Calif. They retired to Escondido, Calif. in 1985.
Gladys and Fred spent 53 years together until his death in 1995. She moved to Corvallis in 1998.
Wherever Mrs. Parke lived, she was involved in community organizations including PTA, the Women’s Medical Auxiliary, YMCA, World Affairs Council, church groups and charities.
She was an avid gardener, a rescuer of injured wildlife and world traveler.
Mrs. Parke is survived by her children, Bonny Parke and Pam Parke of Palo Alto, Calif.; David Parke of San Bernardino, Calif.; Jennifer Parke of Corvallis, Ore. and Jesse Parke of Clatskanie, Ore. and nine grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fairview Cemetery.
A celebration of her life will take place at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Corvallis, Ore.
Her niece, Jackie Gann of Salida, is assisting with local arrangements.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Funeral notice: Gladys Parke
Graveside funeral services for Gladys Parke were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Fair-view Cemetery.
The service was conducted by Ken Brandon, Andrew Lemmon and Jackie Gann.
The taped musical selections were “Nearer My God To Thee” and “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.”
Jackie Gann read a poem and a recorded poem was played that was read by Gil Heister.
Memories were shared by those in attendance.
Pallbearers were Jess Parke, Rick Gann, Ken Brandon, Andrew Lemmon, Jeff Graf and Randy Amettis.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Walter D. Broom
Senior Master Sgt. Walter D. Broom, United States Air Force (Ret.) of Dauphin Island, Ala., formerly of Salida, died Jan. 3, 2004.
He is survived by his wife of 19 years, Marla L. Broom; her son and daughter with her family and also, two sisters and their families.
He was born in Emerson, Ark. in 1930.
He served more than 25 years in the Air Force becoming a superintendent of dental services.
After his service retirement, he worked with the departments of corrections in Colorado and Louisiana, attaining the rank of captain.
He and his wife have been residents of Dauphin Island, Ala. for 8 years.
He enjoyed deep-sea fishing and holds the current record in the Conde Cavalier Fishing Rodeo for the Spanish mackerel he caught in 1998, which weighed 7.3 pounds.
An open house to celebrate his life was held Jan. 7 at their home on Dauphin Island.

Edith G. Logan
Edith G. Logan, 88, Nath-rop, died Jan. 26, 2004, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Logan was born July 17, 1915, in Bridgeport, Conn., to George and Lulu Belle (Brookman) Godburn.
She was an avid reader and a master bridge player.
Mrs. Logan is survived by her sons, Kurt (Carol) Logan, Nathrop and Brian Logan, Washington, D.C.; granddaughter, Bronwyn (Duston) Woodward, Colorado Springs and great-grandchildren, Amber and Tyler Woodward, both of Colorado Springs.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Logan.
There are no services plan-ned at this time.
Arrangements for cremation were made through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Bernie M. Ordaz
Bernie M. Ordaz, 81, died Jan. 25, 2004, at her residence in Salida.
She was born April 3, 1922, in Salida, to Juan and Sylvianita (Rodriguez) Pacheco.
Mrs. Ordaz was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Joe Ordaz; brothers, Robert Pacheco, Manual Pacheco and Eugene Pacheco.
She is survived by her daughter, Sylvia (Ernest) Luna, Salida; sons, John (Joanna) Ordaz, Salida and David (Cindy) Ordaz, Salida; five grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
A memorial service is sched-uled for 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. In-terment will follow at Fair-view Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, those who want to may make memorial contributions to Angel of Shavano Hospice through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Marvin Davidson
Marvin Davidson, 87, Salida, died Jan. 23, 2004, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Davidson was born July 31, 1916, in Mountain Grove, Mo.
He is survived by his sons, Virgil Davidson, Independence, Mo. and Bobby Davidson, Belton, Mo.; daughters, Arlene Briscoe, Raymore, Mo. and Joyce Free, Turner, Kans.; step-sons, Larry Strauss and Mike Strauss, both of Salida; step-daughter, Judy Cloyd, Monette, Mo. and many grand-children and great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Church of God, 12th and G streets in Salida.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Charles A. Oversole
Charles A. Oversole, 72, Salida, died Jan. 26, 2004, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
He was born Jan. 11, 1932, in Salida, to Theodore and Katherine (Bonney) Oversole.
Mr. Oversole retired from Climax Mine after working there for 27 years.
His interests included hunting, fishing and anything having to do with the outdoors.
Mr. Oversole is survived by his daughters, Becky (Dean) Cunningham, Buena Vista; Brenda Oversole, Salida and Cindy (Patti) Andreas, Salida; brothers, George (Josephine) Oversole and Rudy Oversole, both of Salida; grandchildren, Nick (Leah) Cunningham and Misty Cunningham, both of Salida and Sarah and Heather Cunningham, both of Buena Vista and Jordon, Kaylin and Sidney; great-grandchild, Ethan Vancil, Salida and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ted Oversole and sister, Bonnie Glovan.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Ark-Valley Humane Society through Lewis and Glenn.

Herman David Theodore Salberg
Herman David Theodore Salberg, 92, died Jan. 24, 2004, at his residence in Salida.
Mr. Salberg was born Nov. 9, 1911, in Greeley, to Charles J. and Ida (Gustafson) Salberg.
He married Arriett Josephine Perkins May 8, 1937, in Leadville.
Mr. and Mrs. Salberg moved to Salida in 1980 from Leadville. He worked as a painter for Climax Mine and as a custodian for the Lake County School district before retirement.
He was concerned about the welfare of others, had a great sense of humor and enjoyed sports and gardening.
He was a member of Ascension Episcopal Church.
Mr. Salberg was preceded in death by his parents; wife, A. Josephine Salberg; son, Gilbert Salberg and four brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his sons, David Salberg, Salida and Gary (Cheri) Salberg, Granby; daughter-in-law, Marilyn Salberg, Spring, Texas and nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Feb. 7 at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Friends who desire may make memorial contributions to the Shriner’s Hospital c/o Mon-Ark Shrine Club th-rough Lewis and Glenn.

E.C ‘Mark’ Koenig
E.C. “Mark” Koenig died Jan. 20, 2004, at his home in Fort Myers, Fla.
He was born July 13, 1917, in Wisconsin.
After graduating from Walton School of Commerce, Chicago, in 1941, he worked for Haskin and Sells, (now Deloitte-Touche) as a corporate controller until World War II and he volunteered in 1943, becoming a ground force infantryman.
Mr. Koenig received a Silver Star for crossing the Rhine River seeking data in enemy territory. He earned a Bronze Star for campaigns in Arden-nes, Rhineland and Central Europe and was discharged in 1946 as a second lieutenant.
In 1951 Mr. Koenig opened an accounting firm from which he retired in 1980.
He was a member of the Merrill, Wisc., and Salida Rotary clubs and received the Paul Harris Fellowship. He was a member of Salida Kiwanis Club, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, a long-time member of the Elks, Wausau Area Chamber of Commerce, and Wisconsin Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
He received an award after 50 years as a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Mr. Koenig was a director for Lincoln County Bank, Merrill, Wisc., for many years. He was a pilot, enjoyed flying his planes and built an experimental aircraft at his Salida home. He was a longtime member of EAA and attended the Oshkosh air show annually.
He was an avid sportsman, hunting in Colorado and Wyoming for many years.
In 1987 Mr. Koenig and his wife, Geraldine, moved to Salida and in 1991 opened the Mark Koenig Addition at 13th and K streets, finishing it in 1993.
Mr. Koenig and his wife, Geraldine (Doede) Koenig, spent 25 years together. They traveled in their motor home, fished in Alaska and Canada and took trips abroad.
Leaving Salida, they settled near the Fort Myers area and joined McGregor Baptist Church. Mr. Koenig’s faith was important to him.
Survivors include four children, four granddaughters three great-grandsons, five stepchildren, 15 step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren.
One brother and a grandson preceded him in death.

Clyde Keith Alexander
Clyde Keith Alexander died Jan. 25, 2004, at Hillview Manor nursing home, Goldthwaite, Texas.
He was born Nov. 20, 1919, in Elgin, Kans., to James Carlyle and Cassie L. Alexander.
Mr. Alexander graduated from New Mexico Military Institute in 1940 with a bachelor of science in geology and science. He then took two years of mining engineering and geology at the Colorado School of Mines.
His greatest interest was his rock collection and mining.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife, Georgia Belle Alexander, Brownwood, Texas.
Mr. Alexander is survived by his daughters, Sandra (Frank) Bartko, Brighton and Cindy (Dean) Champlin, Salida; sons, Darell (Jennifer) Alexander, Moffat and Eric (Brenda) Alexander, Borger, Texas; brothers, Doyle (Donna) Alexander, Borger, Texas; Gale (Marilyn) Alexander, Borger, Texas and Stan (Lizbeth) Alexander, Oklahoma City, Okla.; sister, Wanda Alexander, Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be a memorial service at the First United Methodist Church, Borger, Texas.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hillview Manor Nursing Home, 1110 Rice, Goldthwaite, TX, 76844.

Howard Parker Wood
Howard Parker Wood, 76, died Feb. 1, 2004, at his residence in Howard.
Mr. Wood was born Nov. 10, 1927, in Pueblo, to Henry and Alfreda Wood.
He was a member of the United States Marine Corps and served in World War II.
He married Marie Hausauer in 1962 in Mexico.
Mr. and Mrs. Wood moved to Howard 24 years ago from Houston, Texas.
He ran his own construction company, enjoyed fishing and hunting, and was a member of Crossroads Baptist Church.
Mr. Wood was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Harold, Kent, Norman, Don and Wayne Wood and step-daughter, Patricia Keifer.
He is survived by wife, Marie Wood of Howard; brother, Jack (Beverly) Wood, Pueblo; sons, Bill Wood of Texas and Steve Wood of Texas; stepson, Robert Mark-ham of Florida; step-daughters, Audrey Ruddick of Idaho and Karen (Steve) Nace of Arizona and many grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.
Services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Howard Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, friends who want may make memorial contributions to the Crossroads Baptist Church through Lewis and Glenn.

Funeral services for Howard Parker Wood were held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Rev. Dub Chambers officiated. The organist was Mary Korf and the vocalist was Harold Heusel.
Musical selections were “Amazing Grace” and “In The Sweet Bye and Bye.”
Pallbearers were Jim Simpson, Keith Smith, Kenny Wahl, Ken Hilton, Jerry Hixon, Steve Nace and Dennis Carmichael.
Honorary pallbearers were Frank Burdick, Jack Wood, Steven Wood, Scottie Wood and Robert Markham.
Interment was in the Howard Cemetery. At the Cemetery, members of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion held flag presentation ceremonies and a 21-gun salute.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Donald (Don) Perea
Donald (Don) Perea, 48, originally of Salida, died at home in Edgewater Jan. 29, 2004.
He was a 1974 graduate of Salida High School and attended Mesa State College. He married Virginia Louise Owens of Hotchkiss Oct. 3, 1975.
They lived in Grand Junction where he was active with the Jaycees from 1977-87. He was a business entrepreneur and managed several restaurants throughout Colorado, Arizona and New Mexico.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Florence Perea and father, Dan Medrano, both of Salida.
Mr Perea is survived by his wife, Virgina; sons, Shane of Littleton; Justin of Edgewater and granddaughter, Penelope Perea.
Other survivors are his bro-ther, Tony (Priscilla) Perea; sister, Wilma Perea and brothers, Fin and Chuck Perea, of Denver; his niece, Andrea (Ruben) Godinez and their daughter Marina; nephews, Marco (Veronica) Perea; Troy (Steffanie) Gonzales and their children, Courtney, Tiffany and Anthony; Rudy (Amy) Gonzales and daughter Torrey; and Shaun Gonzales, his mother and father-in-law, Irene and Clyde Owens; bro-ther-in-law Clyde (Leona) Owens and children Clyde, Jessie, Wendy; sister-in-law, Annalee (Wayne) Nickson and children Lacey, Colt and Cord.
He will be missed by many other relatives and friends.
Funeral Services will be held at Regis University Chapel, 50th and Lowell Blvd. in Denver at 11:30 a.m. Thursday.

Anna M. Ogden
Anna M. Ogden, 26, formerly of Salida, died Feb. 1, 2004, in Pensacola, Fla.
Ms. Ogden was born Aug. 18, 1977, in Salida to Clayton and Debra (Mason) Ogden.
She is survived by her father, Clayton Ogden, Buena Vista; mother, Debra Thorpe, Salida; son, Isaiah Waite, Salida; brother, Clay (Kasey) Ogden, Salida; sister, Christina Ogden, Salida; grandparents, Emma Ogden, Salida and Don and Margaret Mason, Florence and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Joyce Goldenberg Hospice Inpatient Residence or to the Angel of Shavano Hospice through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Velma June Patterson
Velma June Patterson died Feb.3, 2004, at her home in Albuquerque, N.M.
Born Velma Anderson April 7, 1939, in Gunnison, she graduated from Salida High School in 1957.
She was preceded in death by her son, Douglas Martellaro.
She is survived by children, Alan Martellaro, Carbondale; Brent Martellaro, Fairbanks, Alaska; Cynthia Martellaro-Cooney, Hamilton Mont.; Evan Martellaro, Salida and Phillip Martellaro, Bozeman, Mont.; grandchildren, Tara and Jason Martellaro, Carbondale and Jessi and Jozey Martellaro, Fairbanks.
In the past 15 years she worked for the U.S.D.A. in Rural Development, formerly the Farm Home Administration, in Santa Fé and Albuquerque.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home in Salida.
Memorial contributions can be made to the American Heart Association through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Funeral notice: Herman David Theodore Salberg
A memorial service for Herman David Theodore Salberg was held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Rev. Rick Casteel officiated. David and Gary Salberg gave the eulogy and shared memories of their father.
Honorary pallbearers were Rob Salberg, Garret Salberg, Dale Salberg, Gene Salberg, David Salberg and Kerri Farren.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
