William Charles Scanga
William Charles Scanga, 61, died Feb. 8, 2004, at his home in Salida.
Mr. Scanga was born March 7, 1942, in Salida, to Ralph L. and Jane (Turano) Scanga.
He lived in Salida off and on his entire life.
Mr. Scanga was a member of the Salida Elks Lodge No. 808 and Sons of Italy.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, coin collecting and target practice at the shooting range.
He was a long time meat cutter and an excellent cook.
Mr. Scanga was preceded in death by his father, Ralph and son, Larry Scanga.
He is survived by his mother, Jane Scanga, Salida; sister, Eileen Horan, Hellam, Pa.; brothers, Ralph “Terry” (Bev) Scanga Jr., Salida; James (Holly) Scanga, Salida and David (Pennie) Scanga, Grand Junction; sons, Clinton (Cynthia) Scanga, Salida and Jerry (Diane) Scanga, Washington; daughters, Deborah (Tom) Canavan, Missouri and Anna Marie (John) Eckhart, Idaho; 13 grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary is scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment
will follow at Fair-view Cemetery.

Musical selections were “Jerusalem My Happy Home,” “As the Deer Longs,’’ “You Are Mine” and “On Eagles’ Wings.”
Honorary pallbearers were Richard DeLuca, Mel Keserich, Joe Lionelle, Gildo Giorno, Ralph Turano, Richard Scanga, Jimmy DeLuca and Sam Naccarato.

Mildred Noverta Luna Hewitt
Mildred Noverta Luna Hewitt, 68, died Feb. 5, 2004.
She was born July 31, 1935.
She is survived by her husband, Paul G. Hewitt, Jr., St. Petersburg, Fla.; son, Paul G. Hewitt, III and daughter in-law, Ludmila, Hilo, Hawaii; daughter, Leslie H. Abrams and son in-law, Bob, San Carlos, Calif.
Mrs. Hewitt loved and treasured her five grandchildren. She raised Manuel James Hew-itt, 20, Crested Butte and she spent much time living with Alexander Paul, 8 and Grace Mila, 4, Hewitt, Hilo, Hawaii.
She was greatly comforted during her last years by living with Megan Luna, 5 and Emily Kate, 3, Abrams in San Carlos, Calif.
She is also survived by three sisters and one brother, Virginia Vigil (Tony) and Ernie Luna (Sylvia), Salida; Christina Leitch (Butch) Armadale, Western Australia and Dorothy Maikowskij (Mike), Marysville, Wash. She was also loved by many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hewitt was preceded in death by her mother and father, Ben and Ruth Luna; brothers, Albert Luna, John Luna, Charles Luna and George Luna; sisters, Burley Luna and Roseanne Luna and her youngest son, James Kyle Hewitt.
She loved to cook and laugh. Her home was always open and she loved to entertain. She loved gardening and sitting in the warm sun. She collected fabric and loved to sew and quilt, many times saying she lived in a “material” world.
An early riser, she used to scoot about town checking out the local yard sales for fabric and collectibles.
For health reasons she moved to California to live with her daughter, but her real home was always Salida. She always looked forward being “home” for the summer.
Memorial services will be held mid-summer.
Richard Fredrick Stone
Richard Fredrick Stone, 69, Braddyville, Iowa, died Feb. 14, 2004, at Westridge Care and Rehab Center, Clarinda, Iowa, where he had resided for five days.
Visitation with the family will be held from 7-8 p.m., Thursday at Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with Rev. Bob Thompson officiating. Burial will be in Shearer Cemetery, Braddyville, Iowa. A memorial will be established.
Mr. Stone was born May 20, 1934, in Omaha, Neb., to Horace Stone and Thelma (Wolf) Stone.
He was a graduate of Cla-rinda High School.
He served in the Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Stone married Donna Mingus in 1963 and she preceded him in death in 2000.
He was a truck driver and mechanic for Midwest Viking Trucking Co.
Mr. Stone enjoyed working on cars and old tractors.
Preceding him in death were his parents and brothers, Tarol Stone and Danny in infancy.
Survivors include his children, Daniel F. Stone, Shambaugh, Iowa; Christine Nicholson and husband, Bill, Nodaway, Iowa; John D. Stone, Rockwell City, Iowa and Tamara Brown and husband, Doug, Corning, Iowa; grandchildren, Candice Nicholson, Derek Nicholson, Lucas Nicholson, Carly Nicholson and David Allen Stone and sister, LaDonna Stone, Braddyville, Iowa.
Walker-Merrick Funeral Home, Clarinda, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
Velma Hixenbaugh
Velma Hixenbaugh died Feb. 16, 2004.
She was born in Memphis, Mo., on May 9, 1904.
Mrs. Hixenbaugh began teaching in a country school at the age of 17.
After her family moved to Cheyenne, Wyo. in 1922, she was able to graduate from high school and attend the teacher’s college in Greeley. She taught in rural schools for many years, was a gifted teacher and had a lifelong love of working with children.
In 1926 she married Carl Hixenbaugh. In 1929 the couple moved to Salem, Ore., and later to San Francisco, Calif.
They both graduated from Glad Tidings Bible Institute and were ordained as ministers of the Assemblies of God Church. They pastored churches in Gillette, Wyo. and in Calhan.
The Hixenbaughs accepted a missionary appointment to Africa in 1941. In Liberia they lived in jungle country, where they taught in English language schools and worked at the health clinic, in addition to their ministry.
Although they had no children of their own, they raised a number of orphaned African children.
The couple worked together in Africa for 14 years. After the death of her husband in 1955, Mrs. Hixenbaugh re-turned to Liberia for another 16 years. Mrs. Hixenbaugh served as instructor and principal of the Bible school, training young men to pastor their own native churches.
After 30 years of missionary service, she retired in 1971, living in Cheyenne, Wyo., where she continued to be active in church and community life, volunteering in local senior programs and conducting a Bible study class at the Burke center, where she lived.
In May 2000 she moved to Columbine Manor to be closer to her nephew and family.
Survivors include her closest relatives, nephew, Bill (Edie) Einspahr, Buena Vista; sister-in-law, Katherine Hixenbaugh, Cheyenne, Wyo.; Ken and Diane Hixenbaugh, Cheyenne, Wyo. and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Hixenbaugh was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Hixenbaugh; parents, Ed and Sadie Farley; brothers, Gale, Wayne and Glen and sisters, Opal and Edith.
Services are set for 2 p.m. Monday in Cheyenne, Wyo.
William R. Graves Sr.
William R. Graves Sr., 47, Salida, died Feb. 10, 2004, at St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver.
He died of complications from a fall sustained Feb. 5, 2004.
He is survived by his wife, Debra L. Wood-Graves, Salida; son, William R. Graves, Jr.; parents, Charles and Virginia Bird, Commerce City; brothers, Robert Graves, Del Norte; Larry Graves, Terry Taylor and Jimmy Block and sister, Brenda Bird, all of Commerce City and numerous nieces and nephews, including a very special nephew, Ryver Don Kallstrom, Salida.
He is also survived by very special friends, Jan Nay, Annette Woener and Mary and Ed Lopez, all of Salida, who are like family members to him.
Mr. Graves enjoyed camping, rodeoing and being a CNA for Alzheimer’s.
He also enjoyed taking trips to Arkansas to see his Grandma Bird.
He served his country during the Viet Nam War.
A memorial fund has been established at Pueblo Bank and Trust in Salida in the name of Debra L. Wood to help defray burial costs.
Services will be held at a later date.

John Elvis Burch
John Elvis Burch, 94, a longtime rancher in Salida, died Feb. 18, 2004, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
He was born Jan. 17, 1910, in Castro County, Texas, to George and Stella (Turner) Burch.
Mr. Burch, along with his father, owned and operated a ranch in the panhandle of Texas for many years. They were well known for their showing of registered Hereford cattle in Texas.
Mr. Burch moved to Salida in 1962 and ranched here until 1975. From 1975-1983 he was employed at Hughes Oil and Implement.
He was a member and a lifetime Deacon of Temple Baptist Church. He held several positions with the Continental Divide Baptist Association.
Mr. Burch enjoyed traveling in his motor home during his retirement.
He is survived by a brother, George Aubrey Burch, Ed-monds, Wash.; grandson, Bill Burch of California; granddaughter, Brittany Burch, St. Louis, Mo.; daughter-in-law, Diane Savard of California; step-daughter, Betsy Lewis of Salida; many nieces and nephews and numerous close friends.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Jennie of 54 years and wife, Vivian and a son, Jess Burch.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Temple Baptist Church. Interment
will follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the Temple Baptist Church Memorial Fund.

Roma G. Doty
Roma G. Doty, 83, of Chateau Chaparral in Nathrop, died Feb. 21, 2004, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Doty was born Oct. 18, 1920, in Alluwee, Okla.
She married Lewis Doty Sept. 10, 1968, who passed away Oct. 3, 1990.
Mrs. Doty was a member of the Benevolent Order of The Eagles, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her sons, David (Karen) Lemon, Findlay, Ohio; Donald (Nadine) Lemon, Mansfield, Ohio and Richard (Luci) Lemon, Norfolk, Va.; step-children, Kenneth Doty, Mansfield, Ohio; Robert Doty, Aurora and Nancy Zirbes, Cheyenne, Wyo.; sisters, Mabel (Ernie) Hill, Marion, Ohio and Jean (Bill) Rehtus of Kathleen, Ga. and five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Interment
of her cremains will take place at Ft. Logan National Cemetery in Denver, at a later date.

Viva Elaine Garritson

Viva Elaine Garritson, born Sept. 18, 1925, to Joseph Walter Wieck and Francis Christine Peters in St. Frances, Kan., died Feb. 22, 2004, at home after a short battle with cancer. She was 78.
She was preceded in death by both her parents; her first husband, Roy Callahan in 1950 and second husband, Curtis Garritson Aug. 26, 1998, and brothers, Lloyd Wieck and Willard Wieck.
Survivors are sons, Curtis (Karen) Garritson, Lincoln, Del.; Rick (Ellie) Garritson, Lakewood; Randy (Rita) Garritson, Littleton and Terry (Katie) Garritson, Alamosa; daughters, Sherry Garritson (Don Wil-kins), Salida; Lori (Tim) Burris, Poncha Springs and Kim (Allan) Grieve, Longmont; brother, Clifford (Bev) Wieck, Grand Junction; twin sister, Velva McCormick, Phoenix, Ariz.; 22 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Vi and Curt were well known for the restaurants they managed. They included Joe Furphy’s, Main Bar & Steak House, Big G Country Kitchen, Poncha Lodge, Ponderosa Lodge and the Lamplighter.
She enjoyed fishing, crocheting, plastic canvas and crafts. She always enjoyed making things for other people.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. March 7 at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

James Arthur Minnis III
James Arthur Minnis III (Jimmy) died Feb. 22, 2004.
He was born May 26, 1960, in Dallas, Texas.
Mr. Minnis is survived by his father and mother, Jim and Mary Minnis; twin sister, Jeanette Minnis Shields; brother, Steve (Becky) Minnis; niece, Samantha Minnis; nephews, Ian Minnis and Morgan Shields and great-niece, Jayde Westphal.
He was an insurance claims adjuster for USF&G in Dallas, Texas.
Upon moving to Cotopaxi, he enjoyed working as a carpenter and was employed by Legacy Builders.
Mr. Minnis has been a bow-ler since the age of 10 in youth leagues in Dallas and joined the Dallas Bowling Association.
He was a member of the American Bowling Congress as an adult and bowled in many leagues. He had bowled three perfect games of 300 and several 299 and 298 games. He was currently bowling in leagues at Salida Super Bowl.
There will be a celebration of his life the weekend before his birthday at his home in Cotopaxi. All of his friends are welcome to come and share.
Michael H. Neal
Michael (Mike) H. Neal died Feb. 17, 2004, at his home in Turret.
He was born May 24, 1952, in Jefferson City, Mo.
Mr. Neal attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
He had been a resident of Colorado since 1975, working recently as a self-employed investor.
Mr. Neal was preceded in death by his father, Harley Neal.
He is survived by his mother, Dorothy M. Neal, Blue Springs, Mo.; brothers, Mark Neal, Independence, Mo. and Mitch and Matt Neal, both of Blue Springs, Mo.; nieces, Tiffany and Maegan Neal and nephew, Sean Neal, all of Lee’s Summit, Mo.
Graveside services were held Feb. 23 at Gamble Cemetery in California, Mo.
A memorial service will be held in Turret at a later date.
Velma L. Read
Velma L. Read, 74, a longtime Salida resident, died March 4, 2004, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Read was born July 22, 1929, in Center, to James and Pearl (Whited) Pannell.
She grew up in the San Luis Valley.
Mrs. Read married Stanley D. Read on May 22, 1949, in Ouray.
She graduated from Western State College in 1951.
While living in Gunnison, she assisted her husband, Stanley, as a rural route mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service.
Mrs. Read had a great love for animals, cooking, hiking and jeeping in the mountains.
Mrs. Read also had a great sense of humor and always greeted someone with a smile.
She is survived by her daughters, Lisa (Marcus) Davis, Colorado Springs and Leanne P. Read, Salida; brothers, James Pannell, Durango and Norman Pannell, Casa Grande, Ariz.; sister, Zelda Slater, Marthaville, La. and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Stanley D. Read and brother, Frank Pannell.
There are no services scheduled at this time.

Honorary pallbearers were Chuck Jay, Scott Ashley, Dan Ashley, Paul Nelson, Kedric Smith, Jim Nance, Brad Sherman and Lynn Stotler.
At the church, members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars held their flag presentation ceremonies.
