Frank ‘Wat’ Watson Burnham Jr.
Frank “Wat” Watson Burnham Jr., 100, of Bloomfield, Conn., husband of the late Hazel (Smith) Burnham, died March 18, 2004, at a local convalescent home.
Born in Bloomfield, son of the late Frank Watson and Isabel (Miller) Burnham, he lived in Bloomfield for many years and moved to Buena Vista, in 1949, returning to Bloomfield in 2000.
Mr. Burnham started Burnham’s Garage in Bloomfield and owned the business for 55 years. During his time in Colorado, he worked for a power company.
A longtime resident of Bloomfield, he served as Fire Chief for the Bloomfield Volunteer Fire Department for many years and was a member of Hiram Lodge No. 98, A.F.&A.M. Mr. Burnham was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed spending time outdoors.
He leaves a son, Robert W. Burnham and his wife Earldine of Bloomfield; a daughter, Margaret B. Merski of Hartford, Conn.; a brother, Thomas R. Burnham of Bloomfield; a sister, Alice B. Ellsworth of Canton; seven grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; and a great great granddaughter.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a son, Dwight A. Burnham; two brothers, Kenneth Burnham and Dwight Burnham and two sisters, Myrtle B. Curtis and Ruth Stewart.
Funeral services will be announced at a later date.
Carmon Windsor Funeral Home, Windsor, has care of arrangements.

Funeral notice: Alice J. Cubbage
Mass of Christian Burial for Alice J. Cubbage was held at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Fr. Henry Grodecki, C.M. was the Celebrant. Musicians were DiAnn Bourget and Jennifer Hammond.
The musical selections were “Jerusalem, My Happy Home,” “The Lord Is My Light,” “On Eagles’ Wings” and “I Know That My Redeemer Lives.”
Pallbearers were Greg Tetlow, Paul Draper, Mike Bowers, Chris Wright, Fabio Grasso and Terry Patterson Jr.
Honorary pallbearers were Chet Caby, Dino Grasso, Martin Howard, Aaron Wilson and Bill Wright.
Interment followed at Fair-view Cemetery.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

John Lee Fuqua III
John Lee Fuqua III was born in 1932 in Clayton, N.M. and died of cancer March 26, 2004, at his home in Salida.
He was a graduate of Colorado State University and worked as an extension agent for the state of Colorado for 10 years before his 29-year career with the Upjohn Co.
He was a member of the Upjohn Sales Academy.
Mr. Fuqua is survived by his wife, Julie Bylenga Fuqua, Salida; children, Jerre (Monica) Fuqua, Seattle, Wash.; Jeffrey (Shereen) Fuqua, At-lanta, Ga.; Michael Fuqua and Jennifer Fuqua, St. Louis, Mo.; brother, James of Reno, Nev.; father-in-law, Robert Bylenga, Stuart, Fla.; sister-in-law, Susie (Bob) Seymour, South Lyon, Mich.; brother-in-law, Blake (Donna) Bylenga, Muskegon, Mich.; uncle, Vincent McNicholas and family, Florida, and the Everett family of Salida.
The Upjohn family and his many friends extend the circle of sadness at his loss.
His parents, J. L. Fuqua II and Katie Buckles Fuqua preceded him in death.
Mr. Fuqua was an avid hunter who loved his cabin and socializing with his friends.
He was a member of the Chaffee County Fair Board and was proud to serve as a volunteer.
His final wishes included cremation, but no funeral or memorial service. Rather, he hoped his friends would gather at the cabin in early summer (date to be announced) to remember him.

Kenny Wadsworth
Kenny Wadsworth, 27, died at 4:15 p.m. March 8, 2004.
He was born March 31, 1976 in Woodward, Okla.
Mr. Wadsworth moved to Howard in 1980 where he spent the remainder of his days. Although he was a severe hemophiliac he refused to let it keep him down.
His hobbies included, but were not limited to snowboarding, four-wheeling, dirt biking, camping, fishing and big dreams.
Mr. Wadsworth was a jack of all trades and always put his heart into everything he did. He was often seen around Salida landscaping yards, but his real passion was being a skilled carpenter.
Growing up without a father, his heart’s desire was to be a good father to his children and a good provider.
Mr. Wadsworth leaves behind his wife of five years, Windy; children, Christian, 8 and Devon, 3; mother, Janet and many other friends and family.
His desire was that when he died, people would celebrate his life. So, in memory of Kenny, his memorial will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday (his birthday) on the property in Howard.
There will be a potluck following the services and a bonfire.

John Ralph Burgener
John Ralph Burgener, 79, died March 27, 2004, of pulmonary fibrosis at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Burgener was a retired electronics engineer who re-turned to the Salida area after a career including em-ployment with the National Bureau of Standards Tropospheric Propagation Laboratory and 30 years with Hughes Aircraft Co. where he was involved with aircraft radar, missile systems, early unmanned Surveyor moon landings and high altitude surveillance systems.
He was a Salida native, graduating from Salida High School in 1942 and the University of Colorado in 1950.
A Navy veteran, he served in the South Pacific during World War II.
He retired to Salida in 1983.
Mr. Burgener is survived by his wife, Cherie; sons, John Paul Burgener (Patricia A.) of Lancaster, Calif. and Glen Dennis Burgener (Patricia J.) of Boulder; grandchildren, John Paul Burgener II, Jeffrey Burgener, Jerod Burgener, Jennifer Gardner, John Robert Burgener, USAF Capt. James Burgener, Joann Burgener, Jessica Ochs, Cody Garner; several great-grandchildren; sister, Wilma B. Reynolds of Salida, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Katherine Marie Pranza; his parents, John Carl and Elda Chatfield Burgener and sister, Elizabeth B. Morning (John L.).
Mr. Burgener loved the outdoors, wildlife and the Colorado mountains, building his home there in 1983.
Private services will be held at a later date.
Those who want may contribute to a charity of their choice in his memory.

Shayle W. Smith
Shayle W. Smith, aka Webb Smith, 77, retired KSNW-TV sports journalist, died March 25, 2004.
A memorial service was held March 27 at Eastminster Presbyterian Church, Wichita, Kan.
He attended Salida public schools, graduating from Salida High School in 1944. In high school he was an outstanding member of the vocal music programs of John Held and was a varsity football player.
Mr. Smith (known as “Webb” in Kansas) graduated from Denver University in 1950. He was a sports journalist and newsman in Wichita for many years before retirement several years ago.
Survivors include his wife, Joan Smith, Wichita, Kan.; sons, Michael Rick Smith, Warren, Ohio; Kevin L. Smith, Waterville, Wash.; Kenneth D. Smith, Fort Collins and Stewart R. Smith, East Wenatchee, Wash.; brother, Kedrick Smith, Salida; sister, Kent Swift, Houston, Texas and grandchildren, Thea, Vera, Julian, Christopher, Sarah, Parker and Dorian.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice, 3113 S. Market, Wichita, KS 67202, or Alcoholics Anonymous, East Side Group, Box 780143, Wichita, KS 67278.

Mary Bustos
Mary Bustos was born April 10, 1911, in Pojoaque, N.M., to Amarante and Genoveva (Gomez) Garcia.
She died March 30, 2004, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Jose (Ben) Bustos; an infant son, David, and brother, Joe Garcia. Also preceding her in death were step-brothers, Roman Martinez, John Martinez, Alec Martinez, Jose Adrian Martinez and Delph Martinez and a step-sister, Rose Martinez.
Mrs. Bustos is survived by her sister-in-law, Angelina Garcia of Howard; nephews, Tom Garcia of Howard and Bill (Debbie) Garcia of Swissvale; nieces, Rosemary (Jim) Martinez of Lafayette; Carrie (Don) Driver of Howard and Jeannie (Jim) Peddicord of East Liverpoole, Ohio; cousins, John (Lois) Martinez and Dorothy (Rudy) Martinez, all of Salida. She is also survived by many great nephews and nieces and many step cousins.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wed-nesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to St. Joseph Church or the humane society.

Glennamae ‘Totsy’ Hadley
Glennamae “Totsy” Hadley, 75, Las Cruces, N.M., formerly of Aurora, Neb., died March 27, 2004, at Cottonbloom Assisted Living Center.
Born Dec. 2, 1928, Glennamae “Totsy” Scott grew up in Hotchkiss, and graduated in 1946 from Paonia High School and attended Colorado Women’s College in Denver.
She married Jack Hadley in Kent, Wash., Dec. 12, 1947, and supported him through Colorado State University Veterinary School before they moved to Aurora in summer 1954.
In January 1981, after Jack spent 30 years in private practice, they moved to Nebraska where Jack became a field consultant for Norden Laboratories. In Lincoln she enjoyed working as a volunteer with Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital.
She and Jack were active in the American Veterinary Medical Association and she became a lifetime member of its auxiliary in January 1994.
Mrs. Hadley moved to Las Cruces in the fall of 1996 to be near her daughter, Tracy. In May 2000, she sold her home in Las Cruces and moved to Cottonbloom Assisted Living Center.
She enjoyed changing colors in the Organ Mountains, dancing and singing with her newfound friends of Cottonbloom, listening to country music and attending her first rodeo.
Mrs. Hadley is survived by her children, Scott Hadley and his wife, Brenda, Gibson, La.; Scott’s daughter, Shanna and her husband, Chris Pollock and their daughter, Hadley who is Mrs. Hadley’s great-grandchild from Louisville, Ky.; John and his wife, Claudia, and their daughter, Nicole of Las Cruces; Dr. Terrell Hadley and his wife, Kathy of Atwood, Kan., and their children, Ryan, Miranda, Elise, Tia and Shay; and her daughter, Tracy Hadley of Las Cruces; sisters, Betty Scott of Las Vegas, Nev. and Barbara and her husband, Mike Vahrenwald of Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Irene Scott, formerly of Salida and her brother, Robert Scott, Denver.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Cottonbloom Assisted Living Center in Las Cruces. Her ashes will be returned to Aurora to rest beside her daughter, Sheri Kay, who died at birth Nov. 12, 1956, and beside her husband, Dr. Jack Hadley, who died Jan. 28, 1989.
A service will be held May 14, 2004, in Aurora at St. Mary Catholic Church. In attendance will be family and friends to celebrate Totsy and Jack’s lives in Aurora, where the two of them raised a family and started a veterinary practice.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Jack and Totsy Hadley Memorial Fund for Animals. The money from this memorial will be used to help provide supplemental financial assistance to pet owners in the Las Cruces/Doña Ana County area.
Dr. Carol Calista of Calista Animal Hospital, 162 Wyatt Drive, Las Cruces, N.M. 88005, manages the fund. The fund is named in their honor because care and nurturing of animals was an important part of Jack and Totsy’s lives.
Entrusted to the care of Baca’s Funeral Chapels and Baca’s Mimbres Crematory, Las Cruces.

Virgil Frank Houle
Virgil Frank Houle, 72, died April 8, 2004, at his residence in Salida.
He was born Dec. 7, 1931, in Hillside, to George and Lydia (Lamont) Houle.
Mr. Houle married Dorothy Gupitill, who preceded him in death in June 1962.
Mr. Houle served in the Army during the Korean War. He received the Korean Service Medal, Bronze Star, United Nations Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal.
Mr. Houle also spent time at Camp Hale in Leadville and was a prisoner of war.
He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans.
He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and hunting.
Mr. Houle was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Dorothy; sisters, Maxine, Katie, Irene and Gladys and brother, Doug.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Houle, Salida; children, Charlie (Debbie) Koontz, Butch Houle, Jackie (Ken) Berndt, Vicki (Lonnie) Peschiera, Vesta (Blane) Williamson and Alan (Linda) Houle; grandchildren, Carl Gene, Abby, Richie, Ken-dra, Dara, Cassie, Virgil Aaron, Andrea, Virgil Scott and Dor-othy; eight great-grandchildren; brothers, Donald and Bud; sisters, Vivian, JoBell and Geneva.
Viewing will be from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Services are set for 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home with interment to follow at Fairview Cemetery.
Friends who desire may make memorial contributions to Chaffee County Emergency Medical Service or the charity of the donor’s choice.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Funeral notice: Virgil Frank Houle
Funeral services for Virgil Frank Houle were held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Rev. C. Ray Adkins officiated.
The musical selection, “Daddy’s Hands,” was played during the service.
Pallbearers were Lonnie Peschiera, Ken Berndt, Josh Hadley, Herb Smith, Sid Collins and Blane Williamson.
Honorary pallbearers were Bubba Buckner, Vern Davis, Claude Meyers and Travis Smith.
Interment was at Fairview Cemetery. At the Cemetery, members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars held their flag presentation ceremonies and 21-gun salute. Ted Sarai played Taps.
Arrangements were with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Donald James Stanton
Donald James Stanton died March 29, 2004 at Penrose Hospital.
He will be missed by all his friends and especially by his long-time friend, Gloria Martin.

Sister Rose Carmel McKenna
Sister Rose Carmel McKenna, 90, a Sister of Charity of Leavenworth, formerly a high school teacher of chemistry, physics and mathematics, a principal, and Pastoral Care Director, died at 9:50 a.m. Nov. 3, 2003, at Ross Hall, Mother House, Leavenworth, Kan.
Amelia Catherine McKenna was born in Leadville Oct. 15, 1913, one of four children of Joseph and Mary Hazeltine McKenna.
She attended St. Mary Grade School, Leadville and graduated from St. Joseph Grade School, Salida. She attended St. Scholastica High School, Cañon City and graduated from Salida High School, Salida.
Sister Rose entered the religious community of the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Sept. 8, 1934, and, as Sister Rose Carmel, made her profession of vows June 20, 1936.
After profession, she taught in Kansas at Immaculata High School, Leavenworth; Catholic High School, Topeka and Bishop Ward High School, Kansas City.
She also taught in Missouri at Bishop Hogan High School and served as principal at St. Pius X High School, Kansas City; in Montana at Central Catholic High School, Billings; Butte Central High School and Cathedral High School, Helena. She taught at the University of Saint Mary and Carroll College, Helena.
From 1972-1992 Sister Rose Carmel served as a licensed clinical pastoral educator and as the Director of Pastoral Care Programs in Colorado at Saint Joseph Hospital, Denver; in Kansas at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City; St. Joseph Medical Center, Wichita and at St. John Hospital, Oxnard and at Mercy Hospital, Sacramento, Calif.
She served as a certified ombudsman in Johnson County for the Kansas Department on Aging. She retired in 1992 and devoted much of her time to the Ministry to Women program.
Sister Rose Carmel received her AB in chemistry from the University of Saint Mary, Leavenworth; an MS in chemistry from Catholic University, Washington, D.C. and an MS. Ed., in vocational counseling and rehabilitation from the University of Missouri, Columbia.
She was accredited as a pastoral associate supervisor by the National Association of Catholic Chaplains. She completed her clinical pastoral education at the M.D. Anderson Medical Center in Houston and Presbyterian Medical Center, Philadelphia.
Among other institutions at which she studied were St. Charles Borromeo, Philadelphia; Montana State University, Marquette University, Milwaukee and Marymount College, Los Angeles, Calif.
Sister Rose Carmel received numerous grants and awards that included the Pro Meritus award from Rockhurst College, Kansas City, Mo., for her contributions to teaching.
She was awarded the Diplomate Award in recognition for work she did for the church, for the NACC and for the chaplaincy as a whole.
Survivors include brother, Austin McKenna, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii and nieces and nephews.
In the community, her great aunt, Sister Mary Amelia Quinn, preceded her in death.
A vigil was held at 7 p.m. Nov. 6, 2003, in Ross Chapel of the Sisters of Charity Mother House in Leavenworth. Mass of Resurrection was celebrated in Ross Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Nov. 7, 2003. Interment followed in Mount Olivet Cemetery on the Mother House grounds.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Retirement Fund, 4200 S. Fourth St., Leavenworth, KS 66048.
Belden-Sexton-Sumpter Chapels was in charge of arrangements.

Ricky D. Bostick
Ricky D. Bostick, 31, died April 14, 2004, near Salida.
Mr. Bostick was born Feb. 8, 1973, in Parlin, Texas.
He loved to hunt and spend time with his family and his dogs. He was also an artist and landscaper.
Mr. Bostick was preceded in death by his mother, Florence Heusel.
He is survived by his wife, Peggy Bostick, Salida; father, Harold Heusel of Howard; son, Ricky D. Bostick Jr., Salida; stepsons, Jeremy (Kate) Lamm, Salida; Brandon (Amy) Lamm, Cedaredge and Zach-ary Lamm, Salida; step-daughter, Jennifer Lamm, Salida; sister, Marlissa Heusel of Howard; father and mother-in-law, Don and Lela Prosser, Salida; brothers and sisters-in law, Ron (Donna) Prosser, Salida; Lance (Becky) Rundle, Hotchkiss and Tom (Donna) Strohl, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Pablo Lamm, Marlon Lamm, Amberlyn Lamm and Jade Lamm and many nieces and nephews and friends.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Friends who desire may make memorial contributions to the Family of Ricky Bostick through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
