Ivan N. Copen
Ivan N. Copen, 74, husband, father and grandfather, died Jan. 19, 2005.
He was born Feb. 19, 1930, in Cumberland, Ky., to Marshall and Eva Copen. He was raised in Kentucky and West Virginia until he joined the army in 1948 upon high school graduation.
Mr. Copen served his country at home and abroad in Germany, Italy and Austria where he met and married his wife, Margareta.
He served in the Korean War and two tours in the Viet Nam War. He earned numerous medals including the Army Commendation Medal, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Good Conduct Medal and the Purple Heart.
Mr. Copen and his family enjoyed his army career living in Germany, Italy, New York, New Jersey, Wyoming and Colorado. He retired from active duty in 1969 with the rank of Master Sgt.
During and after his active duty he was an ROTC instructor at various colleges and high schools in Wyoming and Colorado. He coached many outstanding rifle teams and won the National Championship in 1968.
Because of his love for the mountains and their many outdoor offerings, he and Margareta moved to Howard after his retirement from the ROTC program.
They owned and operated the Frontier Café for many years and subsequently moved to Salida three years ago.
He was an ardent fisherman and enjoyed camping, mushroom hunting, walks with his wife and dogs, woodworking, reading, poker nights with his friends, mentoring his grandchildren, and regaling them with his stories.
Mr. Copen was preceded in death by his mother and father, his brother, Marshall Copen, and his sister, Janet Peal.
He is survived by his wife, Margareta; daughters, Ruth (Bradley) Roush, Sierra Vista, Ariz.; Linda (Martin) Epp, Salida; Karen (Will) Yunikar, Salida; grandchildren, Tia Hasenjaeger, Lucas Talbot, Corinne Stasco, Madison Cassels, Tyler Kaess and Cory Kaess and great-grandson, Ryan Hasenjaeger; sisters, Berniece Gauss, Michigan; Ginger Hodge, Ohio; Faith Medley, Florida and numerous nieces and nephews.
Friends and family are invited to a gathering honoring his life from 2-4 p.m. Jan. 27, 2005, in the Howard Community Hall.
Bryan J. Welter
A memorial service for Bryan J. Welter was held at 5 p.m. Jan. 21, 2005, at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Rev. Chris Clarkson officiated. Memories were shared by many friends and relatives who attended.

Elizabeth Claire Kellagher
Elizabeth Claire Kellagher, 79, a longtime Salida resident, died Jan. 31, 2005, at her home in Salida.
Ms. Kellagher was born May 2, 1925, in Philadelphia, Pa., and moved to Denver at the age of 18 months.
She was the second of four children born to William J. and Anna Marie (McMonigle) Kellagher, whose families lived in Pennsylvania since the 1830s.
She attended St. Catherine grade school in Denver and attended Denver North High School, graduating in 1943 and later took night classes at the University of Colorado.
Ms. Kellagher worked as a dental assistant in Denver for a number of years before moving to Chicago. While in Chicago, she was involved in travel, first with the travel companies and escorting tours on various foreign itineraries.
She then worked for Aerlingus Airlines (Irish Airline) and spent many years in middle management at the sales office in Dallas, Texas.
She retired from the airline in 1982 and in 1984 moved to Salida.
Ms. Kellagher was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and the Altar and Rosary Society. She enjoyed sewing, fishing, skiing, the back roads, exploring, reading, cooking, auctions and classical music – especially opera.
She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her sisters, Rosemary Weis of Denver and Marjorie (Richard) Platz of Denver; brother, William Kellagher of Dallas, Texas; many nieces and nephews and many friends in County Kerry Ireland, whose lives entwined for more than 45 years.
Mass of the Christian Burial is set for 10:30 a.m. Feb. 4, 2005, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 7, 2005, at the Chapel at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Denver.
Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Elizabeth C. Kellagher
Mass of Christian Burial for Elizabeth C. Kellagher was held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 4, 2005, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Fr. Henry Grodecki, C.M. was the celebrant. Musicians were DiAnn Bourget and Jennifer Hammond. Musical selections were “My Wild Irish Rose,” “Here I Am, Lord,” “On This Day, Oh Beautiful Mother,” “Ave Maria” and “Hail Holy Queen.”
Honorary Paul Bearers were Richard L. Platz, Richard J. Platz, Ryan Platz, Jacob Platz, Richard Smith and Volney LaBaron.
Interment
was at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Denver Feb. 7, 2005, at 1:30 p.m.

Gladys A. Miller
Gladys A. Miller, 90, died Jan. 29, 2005, at Anna Marie’s Personal Care Boarding Home in Salida.
Mrs. Miller was born July 1, 1914, in Victor to Carl and Mary Swanson.
Mrs. Miller was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Westcliffe. She was a past member of the Black Slipper Club and the Ladies Aid Club, both in Westcliffe.
She was a cook at the senior center in Westcliffe and was head cook for Custer County school district for many years.
Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Elmer Miller and sisters Evelyn Hanssen and Mildred Weise.
She is survived by her son, Marvin (Marguerite) Miller of Buena Vista and brother, Carl (Catherine) Swanson of Pueblo; grandchildren Dawn Ann Miller and David Alan Miller; great-grandchildren Brandi Miller and Codi Miller.
Memorial services are set for 11 a.m. Feb. 3, 2005, at Hope Lutheran Church in Westcliffe.

Herbert A. Cole
Herbert A. Cole, 102, long time Salida resident, died Jan. 30, 2005, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Cole was born Dec. 7, 1902, in Malta to William S. and Mary V. (Johnson) Cole. He was the fifth child of seven born to the Coles.
In 1927, Mr. Cole married Inez H. Clark in Cañon City. They had two daughters, Barbara A. (Don) Johnson of Longmont and Mary E. (Jack) Walker of Salida.
There are four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Cole died in 1949 in Salida. On Oct. 11, 1962, Mr. Cole married Edith Johnson. They had many happy years together. Edith died June 5, 1996, in Salida.
In addition to his wives, Mr. Cole was preceded in death by three sisters, Beulah Beck of Palo Alto, Calif.; Marie Nottingham of Avon and Ethel Hart of Ashland, Ore.; three brothers, Elmer Cole of Sandy, Utah; Earl Cole of Maysville, Calif. and Willis Cole, an infant brother of Sargents.
Viewing is set for Feb. 2, 2005, from 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Services are set for 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, 2005, at the United Methodist Church with burial to follow at Fairview Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, friends who want to, may make memorial contributions to the United Methodist Church Building Fund through Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Herbert A. Cole
Funeral services for Herbert A. Cole were held at 11 a.m. Feb. 3, 2005, at the United Methodist Church.
Rev. Christine Richardson officiated. Musicians were Rod Schleicher and Dixie Stanton. Musical selections were “Whispering Hope,” “In The Garden” and “God Be With You Till We Meet Again.”
Casket bearers were Kolt Johnson, Randy Hart, Bob McCormick, Leon Stanton, George Snellbaker and Kyle Dettling. Honorary bearers were James Allen, Jack Herald, Bruce Hutchinson, John Martinez, David McCausey, Richard Ehmke, Richard Knostman and Jerry Long.
Interment
followed at Fairview Cemetery where members of Masonic Lodge No. 57, AF&AM, held their services.

Marcella M. Bahe
Marcella M. Bahe, 86, died Jan. 29, 2005, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home in Salida.
Mrs. Bahe was born April 4, 1918, in Ft. Ridgley, Minn., to Guy and Edith (Seesz) Tallard.
Mrs. Bahe was a ballroom dancer and enjoyed sewing and making dolls. She also enjoyed making doll houses.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren.
She is survived by her daughters, Carolyn (Joseph) Richards of Salida, and Marcia Jacobs of Owatonna, Minn., five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are with Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Helen M. Littlefield
Helen M. Littlefield, 99, a 13-year Salida resident, died Jan. 28, 2005, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Littlefield was born Dec. 29, 1905, in Topeka, Kan., to Charles A. and Helen K. (Wetzel) Hoeland.
Through the years she belonged to many bridge clubs, garden clubs and women’s clubs. She and her husband, Bill, traveled overseas often.
Mrs. Littlefield loved to sew, knit and crochet. She made most of her own clothes and those of her daughter for many years. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Mrs. Littlefield was preceded in death by her parents and husband, William Littlefield. She is survived by her daughter Jan (Tom) Linsday of Poncha Springs, two grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Graveside services are set for 11 a.m. Feb. 2, 2005, at Resurrection Cemetery in South San Gabriel, Calif.

Carole E. (Ferguison) Bell
Carole E. (Ferguison) Bell, wife of Clarence D. Bell, son of late Charles P. and Martha Bell of Salida, died Dec. 30, 2004, with her family by her side.
Clarence, a 1960 Salida High School graduate, enlisted in the Air Force in 1960 and was stationed at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho, where he met and married Carole Aug. 17, 1962.
They toured the world for 22 years he was in the service. Carole and Clarence retired and made their home in Mountain Home, ldaho.
Mrs. Bell is survived by her husband, Clarence, four children, Rick, Dawn, Danelle, Darcy and nine grandchildren.
The memorial service held Jan. 5, 2005, was attended by Charles (Punky) Bell of Cañon City, her two brothers, Farrell of Nampa, Idaho, and Merrill of Calif., and family and friends.
Tracy Dawn Ferguson
Tracy Dawn Ferguson, 35, died Jan. 17, 2005, in North Carolina.
Tracy was born in Salida Dec. 28, 1969.
She is survived by four children, Robbie and Corey Beck, Adrian Ferguson and Erick Anderson; her parents, Sandra and Les Ferguson and Tim Rogers; sister, Carrie Davidson; husband, Tyler; niece, Alexandria; grandmother, Darlene Dennison, Salida; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Doug Classen and numerous friends and relatives.
A memorial service will be held in Salida at a later date to be announced.
Henry “Hank” J. Kubik
Henry “Hank” J. Kubik, 54, Coaldale, died Feb. 7, 2005, in Cañon City.
He was born June 10, 1950, in Detroit, Mich., to Henry and Helen (Traylor) Kubik. Mr. Kubik moved to Coaldale in 1988 and was a member of the Colorado Elk Foundation.
He is survived by three children, Mandy, Dustin and Lyndsey Kubik, all of Michigan; three sisters, Sharon (Brian) Kubik of Colorado, Jan (Rick) Kraemer of Illinois, and Joni Kubik of Michigan; a brother, Douglas (Michelle) Kubik of Michigan; one niece and four nephews, former wife and friend, Reva.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Feb.11 at Holt Chapel of the Garden, 806 Macon Ave., Cañon City with Rev. Bill Kros officiating.
Holt Family Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
Charles “Norm” Cope
Charles “Norm” Cope, 84, Rice Lake, Wis., formerly of Des Plaines, Ill., died Feb. 8, 2005, at his home.
He was born Sept. 29, 1920, in Salida. He attended and graduated from Salida High School in 1938 and subsequently attended Western State College in Gunnison.
Mr. Cope worked for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad for a few years. He entered the Navy in 1944 and was honorably discharged in 1946.
He married Edith Aug. 10, 1946, in Milwaukee, Wis. He graduated from Northern Illinois College of Optometry with a doctorate of optometry.
Mr. Cope worked for Bell & Howell Co. in Chicago, Ill., as a quality control engineer for more than 32 years and retired in January 1982.
Norm and Edith lived in Des Plaines for many years and moved to Rice Lake in July 2004. He loved woodworking, traveling, golfing and photography.
He is survived by his wife, Edith Cope of Rice Lake, Wis.; a son and daughter-in-law, Thom and Andrea Cope of Missouri City, Texas; a daughter and son-in-law, Barb and Jon Jaderborg of Spooner, Wis.; four grandchildren, Ethan, Jeff, Nora and James.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 11 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Rice Lake, Wis., Fr. James Powers officiating; with interment
in the Northern Wisconsin Veterans Cemetery at Spooner, Wis.

James R. Waite
James R. Waite, 93, a Loveland resident for more than 20 years, died Feb. 4, 2005, at the home of his daughter, Yvonne Gunn, in Villa Grove, where he lived for the past four years after the death of his wife, Marcella L. Waite.
Mr. Waite was born Oct. 18, 1912, in Brooklyn, N.Y. to James H. and Tillie Waite. He attended Jamaica High School on Long Island.
He married Marcella March 5, 1944, in Salina, Kan., just after enlisting in the U.S. Army March 26, 1943.
Mr. Waite served in the Normandy invasion and participated in the Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Neisse River, action where he was wounded.
With the 79th Inf. Div., 313 Regiment, he was a radioman, working with AM and FM radio transmitting and receiving instruments. He also repaired telephone and telegraph equipment.
After the war, Mr. Waite was active in the American Radio Emergency Corps, a Division of the American Radio Relay League. He served as Emergency Coordinator for Long Island, Nassau County, N.Y.
His Amateur Radio call was W2ZAI until 1997 when he changed to KGOGS in Colorado. He was an active member in the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for more than 65 years.
He used his electrical degree with Columbia Broadcasting Service, the TV network in New York City from after the war until his retirement.
Mr. Waite enjoyed ham radio and maintained sound systems in churches in which he and his wife participated. The First Christian Church, and King of Glory Lutheran Church in Loveland, and a few in New York state.
He was was instrumental in helping establish the “New” Caring and Sharing Senior Day Care Center in Salida. He was with his daughter, Yvonne, in all her activities and ministries in the Villa Grove and Salida areas.
He attended the Upper Room Church of God, the Salida Vineyard, and the Villa Grove Baptist Chapel during his stay with his daughter, enjoying fellowship in all three places.
Survivors are his son, James B. Waite, Ft. Laramie, Wyo.; daughter, Yvonne Gunn, Villa Grove; four grandsons, three great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter.
He was preceded in death by a brother, James Harvey Waite.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Feb. 11, 2005, at the Allnutt Funeral Home, Loveland.
Another memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 13, 2005, at the Villa Grove Baptist Chapel. A reception potluck will follow.

Betty Jo McCullers
Betty Jo McCullers, 84, Salida died Feb. 6, 2005, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
She was born July 17, 1920, in Aberdeen, Miss., to Robert O. and Flora (Randolph) Murphy. She grew up in Meridian, Miss. and spent most of her life in Shreveport, La. and Dallas, Texas. She has been a Salida resident since 2000.
Mrs. McCullers is survived by her daughter, Catherine Scarbrough of Howard; grandson, Kyle Scarbrough of Howard; a very good friend, John Harding of Howard and many nieces and nephews in Mississippi.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William McCullers.
Funeral services and interment
will be Feb. 12, 2005, at Restland Funeral Home and Cemetery in Dallas.
Local arrangements were handled by Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Roy David McDowell Jr.
Roy David McDowell Jr., “Mac,” 77, died at his home Feb. 5, 2005, after a long illness.
He was born June l, 1927, in Grand Junction.
Mr. McDowell was an Army veteran and longtime Salida resident who, after retiring from the Colorado State Patrol, went to work as an expeditor at Climax mine. Later he retired and moved to the Western Slope.
He was a beloved husband survived by his wife of 35 years, Marie McDowell; four children, Bryant McDowell, Marge Martinez and Sandra Blamey, all of Denver and Roy David McDowell III (Dave) of Colorado Springs; three step-children, Pat Hawkins, Sue Hawkins, and Sandy Merchant; 19 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Roy David McDowell Sr. of Delta. No services will be held.
Herbert “Bert” P. Keele
Herbert “Bert” P. Keele, 84 of Swissvale, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2005, at the Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Keele was born March 27, 1920, in Vernal, Utah.
He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. Mr. Keele was employed by the Denver Rio Grande Railroad. He retired in 1982 after 40 years of service as a train master and road foreman.
He is survived by his wife, Zelma Keele, of Swissvale and a son, Terry (Anita) Blair of Pueblo.
Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. today at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Interment
will follow in the Howard Cemetery. Visitation will be today from 9 a.m. to noon at the funeral home.

Lorna Evelyn Wissbaum
Lorna Evelyn Wissbaum, 79, long time Salida resident, died Jan. 31, 2005, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs. Wissbaum was born Dec. 14, 1925, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, to Hugh A. and Leah (Simm) McCullough.
She and her husband, John, moved to Salida in 1981 from San Diego, Calif.
She was a member of Ascension Episcopal Church and at one time was secretary at the church. She was also secretary for 10 years at First Lutheran Church in Salida and a cook for the Area Agency on Aging.
Mrs. Wissbaum was a volunteer with the Salida Hospital Auxiliary and in 1990 she and John were selected Auxiliary Couple of the Year.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, John Wissbaum; daughter, Diane Lapp and brother Frank McCullough.
She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl L. (Edward) Willett of Highbridge, Wis.; step daughters, Linda (Bob) Swain of Tulsa, Okla. and Carol (Tom) West of Broken Arrow, Okla. One nephew, three grandchildren, six step grandchildren, five step great-grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services are set for 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 10, 2005, at Ascension Episcopal Church. Interment
will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Lorna E. Wissbaum
Funeral services for Lorna E. Wissbaum were held at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 10, 2005, at Ascension Episcopal Church.
Fr. John Huffman officiated. Musical selections were a number of Mrs. Wissbaum’s favorite songs.

Dorothy Ticen Flinn
Dorothy Ticen Flinn, 83, Salida, died Feb. 16, 2005, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mrs Flinn was born Jan. 19, 1922, in La Junta to Otis and Irene (Dwyer) Ticen. She married Ivan Flinn Jan. 21,1941, in Raton, N.M.
She was a longtime member of the First Christian Church. She loved the mountains.
She is survived by her husband, Ivan Flinn, Salida; daughters, Verna Lee Shriver of Lakeside, Calif. and Laurie Haberthier of Northglenn; sons, Ivan Flinn, Jr. of Fountain Valley, Calif.; Patrick Flinn of Houston, Texas and Richard Flinn of Broomfield; sister, Doris Ticen Hougton of La Junta; 15 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Mrs. Flinn was preceded in death by her parents; son, Michael Flinn and a brother, Byron Ticen.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Feb. 19, 2005, at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Interment
of her cremains will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 21, 2005, at Memory Gardens Cemetery in Amarillo, Texas.

Frank Parsons
Frank Parsons, 78, a long time Salida resident, died Feb. 12, 2005, at his home in Salida.
Mr. Parsons was born July 8, 1926, in Bloomfield, N.J., to Frank and Estelle (Smith) Parsons.
He was an 18-year member of Salida Elks Lodge No. 808 and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a retired member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers No. 164 and a supporter of Christmas Mountain and the permanent lighting.
Mr Parsons was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his daughters, Judith Bonass, Salida and Bonnie Parsons, Louisville; sons, Frank E. Parsons, Morrison, Iowa; Thomas Parsons, Salida; Joseph (Maribel) Parsons, Coaldale, Pa.; John (Twila) Parsons, Hotchkiss and Charles (Jeana) Parsons, Sarasota, Fla.; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; Sarah Parsons, mother of his children.
