William J. Haley Jr.
William J. Haley Jr., 87, a lifetime Salida resident, died Feb. 13, 2005, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Haley was born Aug. 11, 1917, in Salida to William J. and Hanna (Green) Haley Sr.
He worked as a car inspector for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad for more than 20 years, working at Denver, Gunnison, Minturn and Marshall pass.
He enjoyed leather work and owned a machine shop in Salida where he sharpened blades. He was a member of the Salida High School state champion football team in 1935 and 1936, and was well respected in the Salida area.
Mr. Haley was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Harry Haley, Richard Haley and Ralph Haley.
He is survived by his son William Fredrick Haley, Tustin, Calif. and his wife, Kathleen Haley, Phoenix, Ariz.; grandchildren, Michelle Marie Haley, Morrisville, N.C.; Jeffrey Patrick Haley, California; Melinda Danielson, Christy Danielson and Jeffery Danielson, all of Phoenix; great-grandchildren, Jessica Catherine Myers, Jonathon William Myers, both of Morrisville, N.C.; Rae Maire Haley, Melinda Lee Haley, Chandler Allen Haley and Kaitlyn Rose Haley, all of California; many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Viewing is set for 9 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. Feb. 16, 2005, at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home. Services are set for 1 p.m. Feb. 17, 2005, at Ascension Episcopal Church.

Zella M. Johnson
Zella M. Johnson, 87, Salida, died Feb. 13, 2005, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gordin E. Johnson, and 10 of her siblings.
She was born in Cleveland, Ark., to Farrier M. and Nancy “Nettie” (Knighten) Ledbetter. At a young age her family moved to Alma where she was raised until her marriage.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her twin sister, Della Cadwallader of Quartszite, Ariz.; daughter, Margaret “Maggie” Christy of Salida and son Michael R. Johnson of Salida; grandchildren Donnie K. Christy, Salida; Dianna R. Jacobus, Hartsel; Danny W. Christy, Phoenix, Ariz.; Clint E. Johnson and Kyle R. Johnson, both of Rogers, Ark.; great-grandchildren, Derek J. Christy and Zella M. Christy, both of Salida.
Services are set for 5 p.m. Feb. 16, 2005, at the Church of Christ, at the intersection of Dodge and Teller streets.

Shirley Jean Archuleta
Shirley Jean Archuleta, 61, died Feb. 10, 2005, at her home in Salida.
Mrs. Archuleta was born Dec. 16, 1943, in Petaca, N.M. to Philadelphio and Felecita (Barela) Peña.
She married Jake Archuleta June 8, 1962, in Alamosa. Mrs. Archuleta and her husband lived in Minturn for 36 years before moving to Salida in 1998.
Mrs. Archuleta enjoyed bingo, collecting Indian dolls, playing cards, listening to Spanish music, dancing and making Spanish food.
She was a member of the Upper Room Church of God in Salida.
Mrs. Archuleta was preceded in death by her mother and son, Randy Archuleta, Sr.
She is survived by her father, Phil Peña and sister Edna (Enrique) Baca and husband Jake Archuleta; sons Philbert (Josie) Archuleta Sr.; Jake (Tina) Archuleta Jr.; Steve (Autumn) Archuleta and Eric (Francine) Archuleta and daughter, Peggy (Erasmo) Archuleta.
Other survivors are grandchildren, Philbert (Valerie) Archuleta, Jeremy Archuleta, Shirley Marie (Carlos) Nava, Bogie Noriega, Ivy Noriega, Jake Archuleta III, Angeline Archuleta, Patty Ramos, Susie Ramos, Kayla Membreno, Kika Membreno, Alyssa Archuleta, Tyanna Archuleta, Meeka Archuleta, Steve Archuleta II, Niko Archuleta, Carolina Archuleta, Malayna Archuleta, Randy Archuleta Jr. and Fabian Archuleta.

Rev. Chuck Surface officiated. Ida Dopp and Henry Montoya were the musicians. Musical selections were “Jesus On The Main Line,” “Praise Him,” “Oh, I Want To See Him,” “Blessed Assurance” and “Psalms 121.”
Pallbearers were Philbert Archuleta, Jeremy Archuleta, Randy Archuleta, Bogie Noriega, Henry Baca, Jr. and Carlos Nava. Honorary pallbearers were Niko Archuleta and Alyssa Archuleta.

Helen M. Kaess
Helen M. Kaess, 93, a life long Salida resident, died Feb. 10, 2005, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Kaess was born May 23, 1911, in Salida to Frank and Blanch (Collins) Albright.
Mrs. Kaess was past president of R.E.A. She was instrumental in starting the Salida chapter. She was an early member and held many offices in the Republican Central Committee in Salida.
She was a member of the Tuesday Evening Club, Columbine Club and D.A.R member.
Mrs. Kaess was an avid gardener and a member of the Salida Community Christian Church.
Mrs. Kaess was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Cecil Kaess; sister Shirley Albright and grandson Doug Kaess.
She is survived by her son, Preston (Pat) Kaess of Salida; daughters, Louise (Dave) Short of Washington and Louella (Felix) Ponte of Apache Junction, Ariz.; sister, Betty Smith; grandchildren Mary Kaess, Dave Kaess, Deedee Trenary, Tim Armstrong, Kenny Armstrong, Artie Armstrong, Steve Armstrong, Cindy Tarlip, Doug Tarlip, Pam Fitch, David Fitch, John Fitch;
Twenty-three great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, nephews Rick Smith, Kevin Smith, Kenneth Smith and Stuart Smith.

Josephine Porco
Josephine Porco, 77, a lifelong resident of Salida, died Dec. 3, 2000, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Josephine was born Sept. 16, 1923, in Salida, to Tony and Agathea (Perri) Ciancio.
She was united in marriage to Dominic Porco on April 4, 1942, in Salida.
Josephine was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and she also did volunteer work for the Arthritis Foundation.
She is survived by her husband, Dominic Porco; sons, Ralph (Flora) Porco, Lanny (Bonnie) Porco and Donny (Julie) Porco, all of Salida; daughter, Mary Jane Cicero of Salida; brother Ralph Ciancio of Woodward, Okla.; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Nicki Porco; daughter, Charlene Finney; brothers, Sam, Fred, John and Tony Ciancio; sisters, Carmina Anderson, Christine Poncie and Bessie Cardinelli.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. on Thursday, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Interment
will follow at Fairview Cemetery. There will be no visitation.

Marie McManus
Marie McManus, 89, Salida, died Nov. 29, 2000, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Marie was born June 6, 1911, in Greeley, Neb., to Hugh and Blanch (Farrell) McManus.
She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers.
Mass of the Christian burial is set for 10 a.m. on Monday at Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Salida.
Interment

Delton L. Sparkman
Delton L. Sparkman, 40, formally of Leadville, died Nov. 24, 2000, at his home in Salida.
Sparkman was born May 27, 1960, in Okeechobee, Fla., to David and Lillian (Martinez) Sparkman.
A self-employed carpenter, Sparkman enjoyed running track, playing the trumpet, fishing and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his son, Phillip Sparkman of Buena Vista; brothers, David Sparkman of Salida, Darrel (Loretta) Sparkman of Leadville and Larry (Shelly) Sparkman of Salida; sister, Melody (John) Sparkman of Leadville; parents, David and Lillian Sparkman of Salida and two grandchildren.

Miles Rabas
Miles Rabas, 74, died Nov. 24, 2000, at his home, of cancer.
Miles was a Salida businessman and owner of Best Western Colorado Lodge for 28 years.
He was a member of Rotary, Elks, Old Goats and Temple Baptist Church
For years, Miles played Santa at the Rotary Christmas party. Rabas enjoyed sports and was an avid Chicago Cubs fan.
Miles is survived by his wife, Gwen, of 52 years; son, Ken Rabas; daughter, Darlene (Bob) Rohrich; grandchildren, Joey, Kelli and Pat Rabas, Carrie (Peter) Anderson, Andy Rohrich, Brad (Tessa) Rohrich; three great-grandchildren.

Lena ‘Lee’ Viola Marie DeGrazio
Lena “Lee” Viola Marie DeGrazio, 77, Salida, died Feb. 12, 2001, at Vencor Hospital, in Denver.
Lee was born Feb. 26, 1923, in Salida, to Charles and Mary (Muto) DeGrazio.
Lee worked as a deputy county clerk in the Chaffee County Clerk and Recorder’s Office under Jasper Cortese from 1967 until her retirement in 1989. She was an avid reader. Lee was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
She is survived by her brother, Bob (Stella) DeGrazio, Boulder and their children, Susan DeGrazio, Judy Sheppard, Rick DeGrazio, Steve DeGrazio and Kathy Winslow; sister, Gloria Castellucci, Salida and her son, Mike Castellucci; nephew, Jerry Naeve, the son of the late Frank DeGrazio, who preceded her in death along with her parents.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mass of the Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. Interment
will take place at Fairview Cemetery.

Ary C. Phillips Jr.
Ary C. Phillips Jr. died Jan. 27, 2001, at his home, in Salida.
Ary was born Nov. 12, 1935, in Greenville, Miss. He grew up in Vicksburg, Miss.
Mr. Phillips was an author and resided in Colorado for the last 17 years.
Phillips is survived by brothers, Gerald C. Phillips, Gulfport, Miss. and C. Alton Phillips, Madison, Miss.; and eight nieces and nephews.
Private cremation services were held.
Lillian Patton
Lillian Isabel Patton, 86, Salida, died, Feb. 10, 2001, at Columbine Manor.
Lillian was born Oct. 4, 1914, to Steve and Cassel (Paul) Ashland in Marshall, Minn.
She attended schools in Cloud County, Kan.
Lillian was united in marriage to Vernon C. Pihl, Jan. 26, 1933, in Beloit, Kan. They lived in Belleville and Cuba, Kan. most of their married life. Her husband died in January 1983.
She was united in marriage to Louis “Pat” Patton Feb. 26, 1989, and they lived in Prescott, Ariz. until April 1999. Louis died in May 1999.
Lillian was a former member of the Presbyterian Church and Order of Eastern Star in Kansas.
While living in Prescott, she was a member of the Church of God and attended church regularly until her death.
She enjoyed being a homemaker. She was an energetic gardener with vegetables and flowers. She also enjoyed sewing and craft work.
Lillian was preceded in death by her parents; husbands, Vernon and Louis; grandson, Kevin Riffel; and brother, George Ashland.
Patton is survived by her daughter, Isabel Joanne Riffel, Buena Vista; son, Vernon Pihl, Salina, Kan.; grandchildren, Beverly Jackson, Nathrop, Brad Riffel, McCall, Idaho, Jeff Pihl, Castle Rock, and Jennifer Gregg, Salina, Kan.; three great-grandchildren; three step- great-grandchildren; sister Violet Stolzenburg, Ames, Kan.; other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be Feb. 15 at the Presbyterian Church in Cuba, Kan., with Reverend Sue Haseltine officiating. Burial will be in the Belleville City Cemetery, Belleville, Kan.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Cuba Presbyterian Church.

James Switzer
James R. Switzer, 75, Salida, died Feb. 11, 2001, in Pueblo.
James was born May 18, 1925, in Denver, to Jim and Florence (Bratton) Cantril.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II.
James was united in marriage to Florence Atwood, Dec. 28, 1956, in South Dakota.
James worked in the civil service as a quality control inspector for military aircraft for many years.
He was a member of the Salida Elks Lodge, Sertoma and VFW Post 3820. At one time, he was involved with Meals on Wheels.
He was an outdoor enthusiast and especially enjoyed fly fishing and tying his own flies.
Switzer is survived by his wife, Florence Switzer, Salida; sons, John Moody, Albuquerque, N.M. and Robert (Susan) Moody, Middletown, Md.; daughters, Bonnie Blobaum, Salida and Norma Farley, Wheatland, Wyo.; brother, Ray (Jackie) Switzer, Denver; special cousin, Dorothy Sidener, Sapello, N.M.; niece, Leslie Haun, Denver; 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Friday from 9 a.m.- noon and 1-4:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Mildred ‘Millie’ Lou Berchert
Mildred “Millie” Lou Berchert, 75, died March 31, 2001, in Broomfield, after a brief illness.
She was born April 28, 1925, in Kansas City, Mo., to Fredrick and Martha Homan.
She grew up in Blue Island, Ill. Millie married Henry Berchert and they had three children. Millie and the children moved to Buena Vista in 1967, to a ranch three miles north of town.
She was employed at the Buena Vista Correctional Facility, retiring in 1992. Millie was one of the founding members of the Ark-Valley Humane Society and was a volunteer for the task force on domestic violence.
Millie was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Martha; and daughter, Janice.
Berchert is survived by sons, John (Maria) Berchert, Washington, D.C. and James (Laura) Berchert, Broomfield.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Buena Vista.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Ark-Valley Humane Society and Hospice of Denver.
Jonathan E. Colbert
Jonathan E. Colbert, 43, died March 31, 2001, at his home, in Salida.
He was born July 27, 1957, in Arlington, Mass., to Edward and Louise (Crocker) Colbert.
He was a resident of Salida for the past eight years. He enjoyed fishing, Patriots’ football and motorcycles.
Jon was preceded in death by his father, Edward.
Colbert is survived by his mother, Louise Hitchcock, Salida; brother, Phil (Raye) Colbert; nieces, Rebecca and Cate Colbert, all of Salida.
There are no services planned at this time.

Brenda ‘Kay’ Watkins
Brenda “Kay” Watkins, 56, a resident of Salida and Funny River, Alaska, died March 19, 2001, at Memorial Hospital, in Colorado Springs.
Kay was born Jan. 23, 1945, in Lubbock, Texas, to L. K. and Myrt Gregory.
She received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Colorado in Pueblo and her master’s degree in counseling psychology from Alaska Pacific University, in Anchorage, Alaska.
Her teaching career included Pueblo Central High School, Buena Vista High School and Yakutat High School, in Alaska. She also served an internship at West Central Mental Health Clinic in Salida.
Kay and her husband owned and operated Gwin’s Lodge on the Kenai River in Cooper Landing, Alaska, for seven years.
She married Winston (Tony) Watkins in Clovis, N.M. in May 1961. They had two daughters, Kim and Michelle.
She was preceded in death by her parents, L.K. and Myrt Gregory and daughter, Michelle.
Watkins is survived by her husband, Winston; daughter, Kim (Rick) Walker; grandchildren, Kyle and Danielle Walker; sister, Jerri (George) Willis; brother, Tony (Kathy) Gregory; aunt, Laverne Martin; and mother-in-law, Marjorie Watkins.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Salida and at a later date in Funny River, Alaska.

Mary N. Driggers
Mary N. Driggers, 93, Grand Junction, died March 10, 2001, at the Palisade Living Center in Palisade.
She was born Aug. 28, 1907, in Salida to Peter and Patricia Scanga Veltrie. She spent her childhood on a ranch near Salida and attended school in Salida.
On Aug. 27, 1939, she married Theodore B. Driggers in Salida. They moved to Grand Junction in 1948. He died June 6, 1989, in Grand Junction.
Visitation and Rosary were held March 15 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. A funeral Mass was celebrated March 16 by Rev. James Plough at the church and burial was in Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Ray D. Martinez Jr.
Ray D. Martinez Jr., 32, formerly of Salida, died May 29, 2001, in New Mexico.
He was born Jan. 5, 1969, to Ray G. (Donna) Martinez Sr.
Mr. Martinez enjoyed car shows and fixing up vehicles, especially old vehicles. He also enjoyed drawing, car painting and was a tile layer.
He is survived by his mother, Donna (Bill) Martinez; fiancee, Debra Arias; son, Adrian Martinez; daughters, Sasha Blakeslee and Jessica Arias; sister, Amy (Mitch) Wilcox; niece, Nina Wilcox and grandmother, Aurora Martinez and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Mr. Martinez was preceded in death by his father.

Alonzo Quintana
Alonzo “Al” Fred Quintana Sr., 78, long time Salida resident and business owner, died May 29, 2001, at Mountain Meadows Nursing Home in Monte Vista.
He was born Aug. 25, 1922, in Cerro, N.M. to Horocia and Mabel (DeLeon) Quintana.
Mr. Quintana moved to Salida in 1978 and opened the Jug Liquor store, which he ran for many years. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and a past member of Los Amigos.
He was preceded in death by his son, Steve Quintana; ex-wife, Pauline Quintana; his parents; brother, Orlando Quintana and sister Belinda Wolford.
Mr. Quintana is survived by sons, Fred Quintana, Salida, Paul (Beverly) Quintana, Saguache; daughters, Charlotte Lovato, Christine Ortiz, both of Salida and Lorraine Quintana, Saguache; brothers, Robert Quintana, Pueblo and Floyd Quintana, Colorado Springs; sisters, Veronica Salazar, Janie Vargas, both of Denver and Flossie Salazar, Pueblo; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Cecil A. (Fred) Sandefur Jr.
Cecil A. (Fred) Sandefur, Jr., 58, Buena Vista, died May 20, 2001, at his home.
Sandefur worked at CF&I Steel Corp. in Pueblo for nine years while working on his teaching degree at Southern Colorado State College.
After graduation, he accepted a teaching position at McGinnis Middle School, where he taught for 29 years.
He loved teaching, hiking, camping at the cabin, model rockets, driving a bus for Noah’s Ark during the summer, spending time with his family and helping people.
He was an active member at the First Baptist Church of Buena Vista.
Sandefur is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sharon; sons, Eric (Kristen), Baker City, Ore., Brian and Craig (Sherri), Buena Vista; grandchildren, Jacob, Mitchell, Katie and Emily, Baker City, Ore.; mother, Ruby Sandefur; brother, John (Judy) Sandefur; sister, Bernice Wood, Penrose; step-mother-in-law, Mabelle Black, Alamosa; numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church in Buena Vista.
