Ralph Van Camp
Ralph E. Van Camp, 74, Loveland, died May 19, 2001, at his home.
He was born August 2, 1926, in rural Riverton, Neb., to Irving S. Van Camp and Marie Shoemaker.
In 1936, Van Camp moved to Missouri with his family and in 1937 to Elm Creek, Neb. The family returned to Riverton in 1938. Ralph graduated from Franklin High School in 1946.
He worked on construction jobs until 1952, when he started working for the Bureau of Reclamation.
Ralph married Myrna Adams March 29, 1952, at Zion Lutheran Church in Macon, Neb. They moved to Trenton, Neb., in 1956; to McCook Neb., in 1957 and to Grand Island, Neb., in 1959.
They moved to Salida in 1965, where he worked until his retirement from the Bureau of Reclamation in 1985. He then worked for Denoyer’s Nursery until 1994, when they moved to Loveland. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
Camp is survived by his wife, Myrna Van Camp, Loveland; son, Marvin (Karina) Van Camp, Littleton; daughter, Sheryll (Paul) Sampson, Loveland; grandchildren: Bryan Sampson and Jon Sampson, both of Loveland; brother, Dean (Pam) Van Camp, of Quinlan, Texas; sisters, Eula (Don) Jackson, Hastings, Neb., Esther Vandivort, Dallas, Texas, Paula (Quinten) Monie, Dallas, Texas and Elaine Fetter, Greenville, S.C.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Loveland. Pastor Schlecht will officiate

Robert M. McBride
Robert M. (Scotty) McBride, 72, died July 31, 2001.
He was born June 1, 1929, in Braeside Terrace, Fauldhouse, Scotland.
He married Sonja I. Sunde in 1956 and settled in Colorado Springs. In 1963, they moved to Salida.
Prior to an extended illness, Mr. McBride worked for the Climax Mine.
Mr. McBride is survived by sons, John G. and Robert S.; brother, William; and grandchildren, Adam, Robert, Anthony and Christopher.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sonja I. (Sunde) McBride; and sisters, Margret Simm and Helen Young.
Services will be held later.
Loretta Ann Schoenfeld
Loretta Ann Schoenfeld, 49, died Aug. 4, 2001, at her residence in Colby, Kan.
She was born Dec. 1, 1951, to James Bernard Murphy and Barbara Rose Stojkovich Murphy, in Kansas City, Kan.
Mrs. Schoenfeld lived in Oakley for 31 years until moving to Colby in 1995.
She was a deputy county treasurer in Logan and Thomas counties.
Mrs. Schoenfeld was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Colby, Kan., past member of St. Joseph’s Church, Oakley and a member of St. Joseph’s Altar Society.
She married Gerald R. Schoenfeld May 23, 1970, in Kansas City, Kan.
Mrs. Schoenfeld is survived by her husband, Gerald R. Schoenfeld, Colby, Kan.; sons, Gerald R. (Edie) Schoenfeld Jr., Poncha Springs, Richard S. (Lori) Schoenfeld, St. Marys, Kan.; daughter, Bridgit M. (Ken) Bockwinkel, Tribune, Kan.; brother, Dennis J. Murphy, Kansas City, Kan.; sister, Mary M. Murphy, Missoula, Mont.; grandchildren, Jacob Schoenfeld, Jesse Schoenfeld, Taegan Schoenfeld and Allison Bockwinkel.
She was preceded in death by her parents and infant twin children.

Claude Leonard Jessey
Claude Leonard Jessey died July 28, 2001, at his home in Salida.
He was born June 24, 1912, in Green Bay, Wis.
Mr. Jessey completed 12 years of school, receiving his diploma in 1930. He received his first grade teaching certificate in 1931. In 1942, he earned another teaching degree, altogether teaching almost 12 years.
He met Eleanore Grande around 1938 and they were married Aug. 3, 1940. They were married 59 years.
His teaching experiences included educating Potowatami Indian children on reservations near Soperton, Wis. Mr. Jessey also taught in several school districts in the Wisconsin area.
Because teaching did not pay enough for a growing family, he went to work for the WSL Laboratory and Research Development Department of the Marathon Corp., Rothschild Division, Rothschild, Wis.
He was assigned to lab work, experimenting with innovative materials of that time.
In 1948, Mr. and Mrs. Jessey moved to Mason, Wis., where they operated a restaurant for a short time and he taught fourth through sixth grades. They moved to West De Pere, Wis., where he worked at Milprint Inc., for 25 years.
In 1974, Mr. and Mrs. Jessey moved to Salida where, for the next 24 years, they were in partnership with their son, Loyal, in the ownership and operation of Salida TV.
Mr. Jessey’s love for teaching always remained with him. But, of all the years he spent teaching, he was best known for the last 54 years as a volunteer teacher of the Good News of God’s Kingdom.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanore Marie Jessey in November, 1999; his parents, Lyman Pratt and Lillian Clark Jessey; sisters, Ruth, Vivian, Hazel, and Phyllis; and brother, James.
Mr. Jessey is survived by his sons, Loyal Claude (Marile) Jessey, Howard and Gary D. (Esther) Jessey, Jenkins, Ky.; many grand and great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Salida Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1040 I St., Salida.

Walter T. Tucker
Walter T. Tucker (Wally), 62, died Aug. 1, 2001, in Elko, Nev.
Mr. Tucker is survived by his wife, Patti, Elko, Nev.; brother, Grover, Tucson, Ariz.; and sisters, Maelene Fields and JoEllen Conners, Buena Vista.
Edward C. Bradbury Jr.
Edward C. Bradbury Jr., 71, longtime Salida resident, died July 30, 2001, in Granite.
Mr. Bradbury was born Aug. 8, 1929, in Granite, to Edward F. Bradbury Sr. and Mary Edna (Rout) Bradbury.
He married Estella Finch Aug. 14, 1949, in Salida, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Mr. Bradbury and his wife ran the Sweet Shop in Salida for 18 years, until his retirement in 1992.
Mr. Bradbury was a Salida City Councilman for 11 years and a Chaffee County Commissioner for eight years.
He was president of the Upper Arkansas Area Council of Government and vice president of the advisory board of the Department of Interior Bureau of Land Management. He was a member of the National Organization of Counties.
He belonged to St. Joseph Catholic Church and the American Legion/VFW.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking, the outdoors and spending time with his family.
Mr. Bradbury was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Billy Joe Bradbury and sister, Gertrude Bradbury.

Frieda McCollum
Frieda A. McCollum, 99, died July 20, 2001.
She was born in Coloma, Mich., July 2, 1902, and outlived 12 brothers and sisters.
She married Cyrus McCollum in Watervliet, Mich., Aug. 25, 1925. Mr. McCollum died in 1978.
Mrs. McCollum worked her way through Western Michigan State College in Kalamazoo in the 1920s.
She taught grade school for many years.
She is survived by her daughter, Bonnie (Don) Asay, Buena Vista; sons, Phillip (Marjorie) McCollum, Albuquerque, N.M. and Hap (Carol) McCollum, Austin, Texas; half-brother, Donald Sonnenberg, Ft. Wayne, Ind.; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday at the First Baptist Church in Buena Vista.

John Michael Quinn Jr.
John Michael Quinn Jr., 78, Salida, died June 8, 2001, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Quinn was born Dec. 11, 1922, to John Michael and Jesse (Stone) Quinn.
He moved to Salida about five years ago from Wheatridge. Mr. Quinn worked for many years as a manager for the Bureau of Land Management. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, a skier and enjoyed hiking in the mountains.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Quinn is survived by his wife, Wilma Quinn, Wheatridge; son, John M. Quinn III (Sue Milovina-Quinn), Durham, N.H.; daughter, Joan Quinn, Albuquerque, N.M.; sister, Jane Kapherman, Casper, Wyo.; and two grandchildren.

DeAun Winfield
DeAun Winfield, 75, Salida, died June 5, 2001.
She was born in Clovis, N.M. June 21, 1925, to Ben Hubby and Ollie (Duke) Hubby.
She married Kenneth Carl Winfield May 9, 1955, in Clovis, N.M.
Kenneth and DeAun moved to Villa Grove in 1955 where they co-owned and operated the Villa Grove Turquoise Mine. In 1957 they moved to Salida, where they made their home for the next 43 years.
Mrs. Winfield was a homemaker and enjoyed spending numerous hours in her garden and taking care of her yard and flower beds. She was an active member of the Temple Baptist church and was a Sunday School teacher for many years.
Mrs. Winfield is survived by her son, David Winfield, Salida; daughters, Bonnie Gitto, Wilmington, N.C., Lonnie Drobnick, Golden, Becky (Lupe) Flores, Denver and Patsy (Paul) McDowell, Mesa, Ariz.; 10 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren; brother, Ben Freddie Hubby, Memphis, Tenn. and sister, Linda Sehorn, Clovis, N.M.
She was preceded in death by her parents; spouse; brother, James Hubby; sister, Patsy Lytle and sons-in-law, James Drobnick and Anthony Gitto.
Services are to be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Temple Baptist Church.
Mrs. Winfield will be interred beside her husband, Kenneth, at Fairview Cemetery.

Naomi White
Naomi White, 88, a resident of Buena Vista for the past 19 years, died June 4, 2001, at her residence in Buena Vista.
Mrs. White was born Nov. 25, 1912, in Herrin, Ill. to Paul and Lora (Menier) McNeill.
She married Basil White April 12, 1936, in Royalton, Ill.
Mrs. White’s interests were the mountains, walking around Buena Vista and taking care of her grandsons.
She is survived by her sons, Paul (Marilyn) White, Largo, Fla. and Timothy (Barbara) White, Glendale Heights, Ill.; daughter, Kathy (Dennis) Norman, Buena Vista; brothers, Larry (Kathryn) McNeill, Wheaton, Ill. and Jerry (Bonnie) McNeill, Wheaton, Ill.; sister, Murcille McNeill, Downers Grove, Ill.; 14 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Basil White; son, Gary White; brother, Clarence McNeill; sisters, Eva Duncan, Thelma Kepple, Velma Prough and Betty McNeill.

William McCarl
William McCarl, 73, Salida, died June 5, 2001, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
Mr. McCarl was born April 28, 1928, in Winner, S.D., to Joseph and Helen (Arneson) Schuller.
He married Laverna Paulson Sept. 20, 1949. They moved to Salida in 1965.
Mr. McCarl was an active member of Salida Elks Lodge 808, a Past Exalted Ruler and a charter member. He enjoyed life playing golf and enjoyed being involved with the Elks charity and youth programs.
Mr. McCarl was a past Boy Scout leader and especially enjoyed Babe Ruth Baseball.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. McCarl is survived by his wife, Laverna McCarl, Salida; sons, David (Dianna) McCarl, Littleton and Thomas (Kim) McCarl, South Fork; daughter, Connie McClure, Snellville, Ga. and cousin, Dr. John Arneson, Rapid City, S.D.; grandchildren, Alicia McClure, Tami McCarl, Landon McCarl, Sara McCarl and Kevin McCarl.

Betty Moir Reeves
Betty Moir Reeves, died June 30, 2001, in a car accident.
She was born in St. Louis, Mo., Jan. 9, 1918.
Mrs. Reeves graduated from Webster Groves High School in 1936 and from the University of Missouri in 1940, with a bachelor of science degree in education with a major in public school music.
She married William Nicholas Reeves June 11, 1941. They had three children.
Mrs. Reeves first lived in Glens Falls, N.Y., and then Boulder. She taught elementary music in Boulder for 21 years, retiring in 1982. In her retirement, she worked at Boulder’s Dinner Theater.
She is survived by her children, Becky Reeves (Richard) Bishop, Stevensville, Mont., Bill (Dr. Mary) Reeves, Salida, Barb Reeves (Kip) Kuepper, Boulder; brother, Robert (Susan) Moir; 13 grandchildren and five nieces and nephews.
A memorial service celebration will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Boulder.

Eileen Cheatum
Eileen Cheatum, 78, Salida, died April 28, 2001, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 26, 1922, in Moab, Utah, to Milton E. Johnson and Nora Mae Dalton. There were 17 children in the family.
Eileen was a doll and teddy bear maker. She also enjoyed fishing, camping, spending time in her yard and spending time with her family.
She married Charles Cheatum May 22, 1969, in Leadville. They moved to Salida in 1980.
Eileen was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Charles Cheatum and several brothers and sisters.
Cheatum is survived by her sons, Thomas (Bonnie) Wenner, Ivins, Utah and William (Darlene) Hansen, Epping, N.H.; daughters, Barbara Herman, Independence, Ore., Dorothy (Larry) Streno, Denver, Judy (Al) McKinney, Maine and Norma (John) Skala, Salida; brothers, Wayne Johnson, Oregon, John D. (Beth) Johnson, Salt Lake City, Utah and Ralph Johnson, Moab, Utah; sisters, Mildred Jones, Vernal, Utah, Ida Hurst, Blanding, Utah and Melva (Don) Christiansen, Salida; 19 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Service is set for 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with interment
to follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Robert C. Jenkins
Robert C. Jenkins, 78, Buena Vista, died May 31, 2001, as a result of a traffic accident near Nathrop.
He was born March 21, 1923, in Boxville, Ky., to Leonard and Rosella Jenkins.
Mr. Jenkins served in the Army, 11th Infantry, from December 1940 through November 1945.
He lived in Colorado Springs from 1952 to 1990, when he moved to Buena Vista.
He married Joyce MacAlmon June 28, 1985.
Mr. Jenkins worked as a gas installer/serviceman and was a volunteer fireman. He loved working in his garden and taking care of his yard.
He was a tinkerer who loved to come up with unique solutions for problems around the house. He loved to cook and always had a freezer full of food, unless he had given it all away.
Mr. Jenkins had fun taking his wife, Joyce, and dog, Widget, fishing — especially at Clear Creek Reservoir. He talked about how he got bargains when he went shopping and then turned around and gave them to the Arkansas Valley Christian Mission.
He especially loved the Buena Vista area and said he had always dreamed of living in such a place.
Mr. Jenkins is survived by his wife, Joyce; daughters, Donna Flynn and Ann Jenkins, both of Loveland; brothers, Ron Jenkins, Henderson, Ky. and Neel Jenkins, Morganfield, Ky.; sister, Marjorie Bohannon, Evansville, Ind.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Cornerstone Church, Buena Vista, Visitation was Monday at Runyan Mortuary.

Ollie W. Jackson
Ollie W. Jackson, 87, longtime Salida resident, died June 25, 2001, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Mr. Jackson was born Aug. 13, 1913, to Fleetwood and Roseline (Berard) Jackson, in Fairview, Mont.
He moved to Salida in 1959. Mr. Jackson worked for many years as a truck driver. He was a member of the Methodist Church in Salida since 1971.
He was preceded in death his wife, Leotta Jackson; step-son, Darcy L. Battles; and his parents.
Mr. Jackson is survived by his son, Ronald L. (Cheryl) Jackson, Salida; step-daughter, Arlene K. Martin, Fort Collins; half sister, Doris Turner, Great Falls, Mont.; grandchild, Jennifer Martin; and lifelong friends, Edward and Helen Powell and Phyllis and Bill Griffith, Ada, Ohio.
Services are set for 10 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Salida.

Kelly Merritt
Kelly Merritt, 89, formerly of Salida, now of Oregon City, Ore., died Jan. 23, 2001, at the home of his daughter in Hartley, Texas.
Merritt is survived by daughters, Candy (Gregg) Mitchell, Oregon City, Ore. and Mary Amanda and husband of Hartley, Texas; brothers, Fred (Betty) Merritt, Kalispell, Mont., Leonard (Charlene) Merritt, Green Valley, Ariz. and Robert (Marie —deceased) Texas; a number of grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Services were held at United Methodist Church and internment was in Willamette Cemetery beside his wife, Charlotte, in Oregon City, Ore.
Terrence Overstreet
Terrence Lee Overstreet, 54, Salida, died April 26, 2001, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
He was born Nov. 12, 1946, in Fort Bragg, N.C., to Gerald and Ruby Ardell (Fielding) Overstreet.
Terrence was active with Boy Scouts of America for many years and was employed as a cement truck driver.
He was preceded in death by his father and daughter, Amber Overstreet.
Overstreet is survived by his wife, Robyn Overstreet, Salida; mother, Ruby Ardell Fielding, Texarkana, Ark.; sons, Robert Overstreet, Salida and Sean Overstreet; daughter, Crystal Overstreet, Salida; brothers, Robert Overstreet, Salida and William Overstreet of Newport, Del.; grandchildren, Alexandra Dunn and Daniel Clements, both of Salida.
