Evelyn Miller
Evelyn (Mary Evelyn) Miller, formerly of Salida, died June 20, 2001, in Springfield.
She was born Sept. 4, 1909, in Balko, Okla. She was the second of eight children born to David and Jemima (Abbott) Stagner. They lived in a dugout with dirt floors on a small farm. They raised cows, pigs and chickens to feed the family.
October 1917, the family headed west in a covered wagon with six children. They homesteaded on a farm about 11 miles east and one mile north of Campo.
Mrs. Miller went one year to school in Oklahoma and the rest at the Grandview school in Colorado, through the eighth grade.
She was married to Monroe Miller Feb. 2, 1930.
In 1944 the family bought a farm 11 miles east of Campo. They raised cattle, pigs, chickens, turkeys and pet rabbits and had a large garden.
In 1957, Monroe and Evelyn separated and Evelyn moved to Springfield. She worked at various cafes and did house cleaning. In July 1970, Evelyn moved to Salida to enjoy the mountains. In June of 1991 she moved back to Springfield.
Mrs. Miller was a member of the Royal Rebekah Lodge of Springfield. She enjoyed crocheting and made many afghans and lap throws. She enjoyed watching baseball games on TV or listening to them on the radio. She also enjoyed playing cards at the senior center.
Mrs. Miller is survived by sons, Lyle (Barbara), Louisiana, Gene (Yvonda), Texas, Vergil (Dorothy), California, Ralph (Ellen), Salida; daughter, Beulah Mae, Springfield; 16 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brothers, Harrison (Uda), Colorado and Andrew (Grace) of Oklahoma; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by daughter, Della; sister, Eleanor; brothers, Melvin, Bert, Paul and Howard; and her parents.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. today at Rich’s Funeral Chapel in Springfield. Interment
will be at Campo Cemetery.
Dennis W. Heckel
Dennis W. Heckel, 60, Salida, died Feb. 6, 2001, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
He was born Aug. 4, 1940, in Denver, to William and Valerie (Walsh) Heckel.
He married Deanna Schlenz May 20, 1961, in Castle Rock.
Heckel served in the Army as an electronics technician from 1957-1960. He worked for KVRH Radio and Mountain Bell. He owned and operated his own business, Custom 2-Way Radio.
His interests included hunting, the mountains, model rocketry, four-wheel driving, and he was known for his knowledge of local history of the area.
Heckel is survived by his wife, Deanna Heckel, Salida; sons, Dennis (Brenda) Heckel II, Salida and Clint (Teresa) Heckel, Colorado Springs; daughters, Debra (Dennis) Crosser, Colorado Springs and Tina (Richard) Umbel, Burlington, Wis.; grandchildren, April Heckel, Benjamin Heckel, Christian Heckel, Alyssa Heckel, Samantha Murray, Tierney Crosser, Travis Umbel and Jessica Umbel.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Leon Heckel.
Visitation will be from 1-4:30 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m.-noon Friday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Temple Baptist Church.
Interment
will follow at Fairview Cemetery.

Laura Perri
Laura Perri, 85, Salida, died July 14, 2001, at Anna Marie’s Personal Care Center, Salida.
Mrs. Perri was born Nov. 8, 1915, in Bucita, Cosenza, Italy, to Emilio and Adelina (Luchetta) Alessandrini.
Her interests were gardening, cooking and canning. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
Mrs. Perri is survived by her sons, Bill Perri, Pueblo and Frank Perri, Salida; grandchildren, Frank (Lori) Perri, Tina (Jim) Perri Mundy, Mike Perri, Lisa Perri, Kevin Perri, Danny (Cindy) Perri and Laurie (Barry) Sherman; six great-grandchildren; in-laws, Marie Perri, Thornton, Frank (Erma) Perri, Salida and Bill (Eleanor) Perri, Denver; and many other relatives in Italy and many cousins in Salida.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Pete Perri; son, Sam Perri and brothers and sisters.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mass of the Christian Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. Interment
will take place at Fairview Cemetery.

Norma T. Clare
Norma T. Clare died April 25, 2001, at Integrated Health Services, Pueblo.
She was born in Westcliffe, Oct. 21, 1906, to Will Heisterburg.
A graduate of Mt. St. Scholastica in 1924, she went on to train in nursing at St. Joseph Hospital. After graduating from college she moved to Salida, where she secured her first job with the Red Cross Hospital.
After a few years she began to work for the D&RG Hospital, which later became the Salida Hospital. After 40 years of service and a promotion to superintendent of nursing, she retired.
In 1980, she moved to Denver to live with her son, Bill, and daughter-in-law, Marylyn. She lived with them for 15 years in Broomfield, then moved with them to Pueblo.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward (Frosty) Clare; cousin, William Kettle; aunt and uncle, Margret (Harry) Kettle; and granddaughter, Tiffany Hoyt.
Clare is survived by a son, William A. (Marylyn) Clare; grandchildren, Norma (Stephen) Knudsen, Maureen (Michael) Cook, Patrick (Kelly) Clare, Karen (Brad) Hoyt, William Clare II and Michael (Roxy) Clare; great-grandchildren, Jordon, Jason, Jessica, Nicole, Jordyn, Marie, Natalie, Brittanie and Cole.
A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Ascension Episcopal Church, Salida.
Inurnment will be at Fairview Cemetery, Salida.
Ralph Van Camp
Ralph E. Van Camp, 74, Loveland, died May 19, 2001, at his home.
He was born August 2, 1926, in rural Riverton, Neb., to Irving S. Van Camp and Marie Shoemaker.
In 1936, Van Camp moved to Missouri with his family and in 1937 to Elm Creek, Neb. The family returned to Riverton in 1938. Ralph graduated from Franklin High School in 1946.
He worked on construction jobs until 1952, when he started working for the Bureau of Reclamation.
Ralph married Myrna Adams March 29, 1952, at Zion Lutheran Church in Macon, Neb. They moved to Trenton, Neb., in 1956; to McCook Neb., in 1957 and to Grand Island, Neb., in 1959.
They moved to Salida in 1965, where he worked until his retirement from the Bureau of Reclamation in 1985. He then worked for Denoyer’s Nursery until 1994, when they moved to Loveland. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening.
Camp is survived by his wife, Myrna Van Camp, Loveland; son, Marvin (Karina) Van Camp, Littleton; daughter, Sheryll (Paul) Sampson, Loveland; grandchildren: Bryan Sampson and Jon Sampson, both of Loveland; brother, Dean (Pam) Van Camp, of Quinlan, Texas; sisters, Eula (Don) Jackson, Hastings, Neb., Esther Vandivort, Dallas, Texas, Paula (Quinten) Monie, Dallas, Texas and Elaine Fetter, Greenville, S.C.

Dixie Lou Hillis
Dixie Lou Hillis, 70, Salida, died July 11, 2001, at her residence.
Mrs. Hillis was born Feb. 1, 1931, in De Beque, to Henry and Rose (Drake) Myser.
She was employed at WalMart as a greeter for the past five-and-one-half years. Her interests were fishing, golfing and gambling at Cripple Creek.
Mrs. Hillis is survived by her son, Robert (Sherri) Hillis, Salida; daughters, Sandra (Butch) Schara, Ft. Lupton and Melody Hillis (Phillip) Church, Silverthorne; grandchildren, Sean Bambei, Scot Bambei, Justin Hillis, Joshua Hillis and Brayden Pappenfort; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Loyce O. Hillis, Jr.
Graveside funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Fairview Cemetery.

Fred Paquette
Fred Paquette, a lifetime Chaffee County resident, died April 21, 2001, at St. Anthony Central Hospital.
He suffered a heart attack while he was working in his yard April 16.
He was born at Centerville, Feb. 16, 1915. His parents, Rosa (Hepp) and Omer Paquette, were from pioneer Chaffee County families.
Paquette spent his childhood in Buena Vista and graduated from Buena Vista High School in 1931.
He married Buena Vista resident, Ruth Mosher, July 10, 1937, who survives him after almost 64 years of marriage.
Fred worked primarily as a meat cutter from an early age. With George Daniel and Moritz Kerndt, Paquette owned and operated the Salida Boys’ Market until his retirement in 1971.
Soon after, he started his second career with the Chaffee County Sheriff’s Department as a dispatcher. He became a deputy sheriff and continued in that position until 1974, when he retired to spend the rest of his life devoting his time to his family, the outdoors, gardening, and a wide variety of crafts and hobbies.
Paquette enjoyed and was skilled in the art of making doll house furniture.
He was a Marine during World War II and was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of Salida Elks Lodge No. 808 for more than 50 years and was a member of Salida Masonic Lodge No. 57 AF&AM.
In the early 1960s, he was a founding member of Chaffee County Jeep Patrol Search and Rescue.
He continued to take part in every search and rescue mission in some capacity until his health prevented it.
In addition to his wife, Ruth, he is survived by son, Fred “Fritz” Paquette, a physician in Denver; daughter, Judy (Harold) Starbuck, Salida; granddaughters, Melissa Starbuck, Chicago, Ill. and Amy Starbuck (Jeremiah) Bennett, Golden.
A celebration of his life will be held at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Thursday.

Eunice Taylor
Eunice Higgins Taylor, 85, Cotopaxi, died May 17, 2001, in Littleton.
She was born May 20, 1915, in Hillside, to Walter W. and Edna J. (Boyle) Higgins.
She was married to Leslie D. Taylor in October 1938 in Denver.
Eunice was a homemaker and gardener. She enjoyed Bible studies with her friends and she belonged to the Cotopaxi Community Church.
Taylor is survived by children, Leslie A. (KayLea) Taylor, Cottage Grove, Minn., Joyce (Mike) Taylor Brown, Franktown and Clinton Taylor, Denver; grandchildren, Irene Walters, Eva Marie Baries, Susan Beltler and Jessica Brown; sister, JoAnn Robinson; and cousin, Walter (Ruth) Sneddon.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. today at the Cotopaxi Community Church, with Pastor Virgil Marshall officiating. Burial will take place at Hillside Cemetery.

Sharon Logan
Sharon Logan, 62, Salida, died May 11, 2001, at her home in Salida.
She was born Oct. 19, 1938, in San Jose, Calif., to Robert and Maryellen (Bruce) Bowe.
Logan spent her early years in the San Jose/Modesto area, graduating from Modesto High School in 1957.
She worked as a cosmetologist, taught cosmetology in the 1960s and 1970s and was trained in and taught hypnotherapy.
Logan graduated from the chiropractic technician program at Palmer Chiropractic College in Davenport, Iowa in 1984 and taught X-ray positioning at Life-West Chiropractic College in Hayward, Calif.
She belonged to several professional radiological organizations, was a member of Toastmasters and won the Toastmaster of the Year Award in Modesto, Calif.
She and her husband, Dr. Harvey Payne, moved to Salida in January 1995 and opened Salida Chiropractic April 3, 1995.
Her greatest love was teaching and two years ago, when Salida Chiropractic moved to a new location on U.S. 50, she built the Learning Center adjacent to the office with intentions of offering classes for X-ray technicians. She became ill before she had a chance to fulfill that dream.
Logan is survived by her husband and best friend, Dr. Harvey Payne, Salida; mother, Maryellen Bowe, Butte, Mont.; sons, Bruce (Samantha) Logan, Austin, Texas, Robert (Lesley) Logan, Modesto, Calif., Mike Payne, Salida and Paul Payne, Fayetteville, Ark.; daughters, Lynette (Kevin) Logan-Ugar, San Francisco, Calif., Susan Payne, Salida and eight grandchildren.
Memorial services in Salida and California will be held at a later date.

Pauline Schneiter
Pauline Schneiter, 101, died Feb. 1, 2001, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
Pauline was born in New Philadelphia, Ohio, Sept. 11, 1899, to John and Anna Wallick.
She married Carl Schneiter June 20, 1918.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1950 and daughter, Geraldine in 1961.
Pauline and Carl moved to Buena Vista in 1945. They owned and operated Schneiter Service Station, Grocery and Liquor store (now Little Daisy).
After selling the businesses, she managed the Sterling Trailer Court for 17 years. After that was sold, she lived with her daughter, Ruth Linke and grandchildren Cal and Carle in Buena Vista.
For many years, Pauline was active in the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary. She loved to crochet and do embroidery and gave most her work away through the Legion.
Schneiter is survived by daughter, Ruth; grandchildren, Cal and Carle Linke, Buena Vista, and Larry (Becky) Schneiter; great-grandchildren, Andrea (Greg) Allen, Troy Schneiter and wife, all of Farmington, N. M.; grandson, Dan Schneiter, Clearlake, Calif., and his children, Clifford, David and wife, Michelle, of Buena Vista.
Pauline’s son, Carl (Elva) Schneiter Jr., Leadville, and their children Gail (Eric) Gunnerson, Logan, Utah, Kay (Bob) Hartzell, Leadville, Debbie (Steve) Pace, Rifle and Jim (Dawna) Schneiter, Leadville.
Pauline will be buried with her husband at Dover Burial Park in Dover, Ohio. Memorial services are pending.

Kathleen Cantonwine-Masters
Kathleen A. (Truitt) Cantonwine-Masters, 72, Salida, formerly of Sterling, died May 5, 2001, at her residence in Salida.
She was born Nov. 27, 1928, in Sterling, to William and Helen (Brown) Truitt.
She is survived by her sons, Fred (Gloria) Cantonwine, Las Cruces, N.M., Mike (Sherry) Cantonwine, Greeley, Gerry Cantonwine, Fort Collins, Doug (Anne) Cantonwine, Salida; four step-children; brothers, William “Bay” Truitt, Sterling, John Barton, Sterling and Bob Truitt, El Paso, Texas; sister, Shirley (Wilbur) Johnson, San Diego, Calif.; grandchildren, Greg, Lisa, John, Michelle, Jeremiah, Pam and Marisa.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Alfred Cantonwine and Glenn Masters.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date in Sterling.

Ralph Scanga Sr.
Ralph L. Scanga Sr., 93, longtime Salida resident, died May 7, 2001, at Columbine Manor Nursing Home.
He was born Nov. 6, 1907, in Poncha Springs, to Joseph and Jennie (Posteraro) Scanga.
He was educated in Poncha Springs. In 1923 he moved with his parents to Lago, Italy where he attended the Italian-American Institute of Clothing Design, graduating in 1925.
After graduation, he returned to the United States and worked as a tailor in Pittsburgh, Pa., and as an apprentice machinist. In 1937, he moved to Pueblo and worked as a machinist with Gobatti Engineering.
In addition, he tailored and sold garments for Gibson and Co.
In 1941, he was inducted by the Navy as a precision machinist on Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, Calif. He was honorably discharged in 1947 — the year he met his wife of many years, Jane Turano and they were wed in January 1948. The couple first lived in Vallejo, Calif.
In 1950, they returned to Salida and in 1951, built a home on his ranch in Poncha Springs. In 1952, he and his wife bought a ranch in Sand Park, two miles west of Salida and founded Scanga Meat Co. He resided at the ranch until his death.
Scanga loved Salida and was an outspoken promoter of the area. He was a supporter of many local institutions — in particular, Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
He and his wife, Jane, square danced for more than 20 years with the Shavano Shufflers and the Monarch Mavericks.
He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and was a member of the Salida Elks Lodge No. 808 for 25 years. He was an active Rotarian for five years and was a member of the Chaffee County Cattlemen’s Association.
Scanga’s passing marks the end of the first generation of descendants of the early pioneer Italian families who settled and ranched in the Upper Arkansas Valley in the late 1800s.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Scanga, Salida; sons, Bill (Garnet) Scanga, Las Vegas, Nev., Ralph “Terry” (Beverly) Scanga Jr., Salida, James (Holly) Scanga, Salida and David (Pennie) Scanga, Grand Junction; daughter, Eileen Horan, Hellam, Pa.; 26 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jim, Bruno, Greg, Emilo and Dominic Scanga; sisters, Nettie Post and Mary Scanga.
Visitation will be Wednesday from 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4:30 p.m. at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.

Rosemary Tischer
Rosemary Tischer died June 19, 2001, at Heart of the Rockies Regional Medical Center.
She was the “Cake Lady” for more than 30 years, baking and decorating wedding, birthday and occasion cakes for many local families. She was an avid Broncos and Rockies fan.
She also enjoyed letter writing, crocheting and catering. Her gift for retaining historic and personal dates was phenomenal. She was a Bible scholar, a devout Catholic and a member of St. Joseph Church.
Mrs. Tischer is survived by sons, Jack, Tim, Dennis (Toni), Joseph (Cheryl), Craig (Linda) Heideman and Wayne Heideman; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grand children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; infant son, Gary and brothers, Eugene and Robert Daley.
Viewing will be from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1-4 p.m. Friday at Lewis and Glenn Funeral Home.
Rosary begins at 1 p.m. followed by funeral services at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Church.
Interment
will be at Fairview Cemetery.

Calvin Nachtrieb
Calvin Nachtrieb died June 18, 2001, in Queen Valley, Ariz.
He was born to Charles and Ethel Nachtrieb April 16, 1926, in Nathrop.
A lifelong resident of Chaffee County, he ranched north of Buena Vista and mined at Climax and the Black Cloud. He served on the board for the Buena Vista schools.
Mr. Nachtrieb is survived by his wife, Billee, Queen Valley, Ariz.; children, Stan Nachtrieb, Everett, Wash., Melvin (Glenda) Nachtrieb, Loveland, Calaine Ohmert, Lakewood and Scott (Lea) Nachtrieb, Highlands Ranch; step-children, Jere Ellenberger, Bloomfield, N.M., Teri (Wes) Jackson, Great Falls, Mont. and Mike (Cindy) Haworth, Absarokee, Mont.; sister, Ruben VanBuskirk, Buena Vista; brother, Chuck Nachtrieb, Mesa, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the family cemetery in Nathrop.
