ALBION, Ill. — Oren E. Smith, 56, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2000, at Wabash General Hospital in Mount Carmel of an apparent heart attack.
He was the Edwards County sheriff and was deputy sheriff for 24 years.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Albion Fire Department.
He was an Army veteran.
Surviving are his wife, Emma Lou; a daughter, Pam Smith of Olney; and a son, Glenn of Pekin.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church, with burial in Graceland Cemetery, with military rites.

ENFIELD, Ill. — George Wilburn “Wib” Foley, 86, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at the Enfield Healthcare Center.
He retired in 1975 as a body shop man.
He was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mary Jane (Rodden); four daughters, Louise Robertson of Carmi, Mildred Medlin and Shirley Smith, both of Enfield, and Susan Pearson of Springfield; a son, Billy of Benton; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

ROBINSON, Ill. — Bernice Almira McCoy, 86, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at the West County Nursing Center in Ballwin, Mo.
She had worked for the Robinson Transformer Co.
She was a member of the Robinson First Christian Church of the Disciples of Christ and the American Legion Post 69 Ladies Auxiliary.
Surviving are a daughter, Ann Braun of Grandview, Mo.; a son, Richard of Manchester, Mo.; a sister, Glenore Jones of Robinson; five grandsons, Deriek and Ryan Braun and Craig, Brian and Chad McCoy; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George V., and a daughter, Colette Sue McCoy.

PALESTINE, Ill. — Earl E. “Pinky” Mendenhall, 77, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, of cancer at his home.
He was a farmer and retired from the E.H. Barre Co. in 1984. He worked at the Palestine Community Unit 3 school system for several years.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge 849.

ENFIELD, Ill. — Leroy Digby, 58, died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital in McLeansboro of a heart attack.
He was a tank truck driver for the B&B Oil Field Co. in Norris City.
He was a Vietnam War Navy veteran and member of the American Legion Post 106. He was Protestant.
Surviving are five daughters, Heather Young of Oregon, Christina Gollner of Springerton, Melissa Lee of Norris City, Brandy and Mandy Digby, both of Enfield; four sons, David, Paul and Perry Wilburn, all of Burney, Calif., and Jason Digby of Enfield; a sister, Joanne Ferrell of California; two brothers, Woodrow of Wisconsin, and Carl of McLeansboro; 16 grandchildren; and his companion, Joann Winter of Enfield.

John Thorne
John J. Thorne, 73, formerly of Evansville, died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, in Punta Gorda Isles, Fla., of leukemia.
He was an executive in sales and marketing in the moving industry for more than 30 years, retiring in the mid-1980s. He was the vice president of Atlas Van Lines in Evansville.
He owned The Sandpiper Restaurant in Noblesville, Fla., retiring in 1995.
He served in the Navy during the atomic testing at Bikini Island in the Pacific and was the recipient of the Victory Medal, American Theater Medal and the Asiatic Pacific Medal.
He was a 1944 graduate of Seton Hall Preparatory School, where he was Amateur Golden Glove Heavy Weight Champion in 1943-44. He was inducted into the Seton Hall Sports Hall of Fame in 1995. He received a degree in management from Seton Hall University in 1950.
He was a member of the Masons and Punta Gorda Peace River Power Squadron.
Surviving are his wife, Nancy; three sons, Jack of LockHaven, Pa., Bill of Fayetteville, Ark., and Brian Alfing of Green Valley, Ariz.; two daughters, Jane Sullivan of Noblesville and Gwen of Indianapolis; six granddaughters, Jade Kali, Sage Brieanne Sullivan, Jessie Yeaman, Sara, Elizabeth and Amanda Alfing.
His first wife, Inez J. (Storer), preceded him in death.
A celebration of life will be held over the Memorial Day weekend in Indianapolis. Forest lawn Crematory in Port Charlotte handled the arrangements.

Genevieve E. Nieten, 83, of Evansville, died Monday, Jan. 24, 2000, at Woodlands Convalescent Center in Newburgh.
She had been a nurse at St. Mary’s Medical Center for many years.
She was a graduate of St. Mary’s School of Nursing.
She was a member of the ladies’ auxiliaries of St. Mary’s Medical Center and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
She was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Sue Hensley of Chandler, Ind.; a sister, Margaret Rohlfer of Evansville; a brother, John H. Rasico of Holiday, Fla.; four grandchildren, Shannon Long, Debbie Nance, Michael Hensley and Julie Norman; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was a World War II Army Air Corps veteran and member of the American Legion Post 0044.
He was a 50-year member of the Rockport Masonic Lodge.
He collected Indian relics.

He was an outreach elder at Zion United Church of Christ.

He was a Korean War Army veteran, serving as a radio operator.
He attended St. Simon Catholic Church and was a member of the Knights of Columbus, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Moose and Eagles.
