Velma E. (Neidig) Simpson, 91, of Evansville, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at St. Mary’s Health Care Services/Welborn Campus.
She retired as a nursing attendant in 1975.
She was a 71-year member and officeholder at Central United Methodist Church. She was a member of the Binate Sunday school class, United Methodist Women, Martha Circle, the Golden Age Group of Washington Avenue Presbyterian Church and had been honored with a special mission recognition pin for outstanding service the her church.
Surviving are a son, Donald Lee of Hardinsburg, Tenn.; a sister, Genevieve N. Ruston of Racine, Wis.; six grandchildren, Vickie Lynn, Donald Lee Jr. and Kim William Simpson, Sandra Swift, Kristi Bryant and Tammy Mimms; six great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. Ralph Miller officiating, with burial in Park Lawn Cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel.

Shirley Dunn
Shirley Louise (Moorhead) Dunn, 64, formerly of Evansville, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in Lawton, Okla., of respiratory failure.
She was a 1954 graduate of Reitz High School.
She worked at Columbia Southwestern Medical Center for 40 years.
She was a Women’s Army Corp veteran, serving in the Signal Corps and Teletype School at Fort Gordon, Ga.
She was active with the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts. She was a Little League baseball coach.
She was a member of the Western Hill Christian Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Regina Lynn Cunnigham of Joplin, Mo.; a son, Jeffrey Brent of Lawton; five sisters, Una Huber of Locust Grove, Okla., Doris Mikesell of Phoenix, Joyce Darrough of Roswell, N.M., June Smith of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Nancy Mikesell of Henderson, Ky.; four brothers, Robert Moorhead of Woodinville, Wash., Charles and William F. Moorhead, both of Evansville, and Joseph Moorhead of Brick Township, N.J.; four grandchildren, Heather Hemingway, Jessica White, Andrea Lynn Pointer and Jarrod Brent Dunn; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Western Hills Christian Church in Lawton, with burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens, with military rites.
Becker Funeral Home in Lawton is handling arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be made to the church youth fund.

Raymond Kappner Sr.
HUNTINGBURG, Ind. — Raymond H. Kappner Sr., 79, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville.
He retired as a mechanic and a Huntingburg city employee.
He was a World War II Army veteran and member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
Surviving are two sons, Ray Jr. and Joseph , both of Huntingburg; a sister, Janelia Jahn of St. Anthony; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and his companion, Lucile Weyerbacher of Huntingburg.
A daughter, Annette Kappner and two sons, Paul and Gordon, preceded him in death.
Services will be at 10 a.m. EST Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, with burial in the church Cemetery, with military rites.
Friends may call from 2 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, with a rosary at 6 p.m. at Nass & Son Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.

Maxine Gaines
OAKLAND CITY, Ind. — Maxine Gaines, 74, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital in Evansville of renal failure.
She was a member of the First Christian Church and Women of the Moose in Petersburg.
Surviving are two daughters, Beth Ann Murray of Boulder City, Nev., and Roberta Meyer of Stendal; a stepdaughter, Janice Greene of Terre Haute; a sister, Norma Jean Kinman of Las Vegas; two brothers, Wayne and Russell Stone, both of Petersburg; two grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren.
Her husband, Robert L., died in 1984.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. EST Tuesday at Harris Funeral Home in Petersburg, with burial in Walnut Hills Cemetery in Petersburg.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Michael Benton
MOUNT VERNON, Ind. — Michael Alan Benton, 49, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of smoke inhalation from a kitchen fire.
He worked as a salesman for D-Patrick.
He was an Army veteran and member of the Mount Vernon Elks and American Legion Post 5.
Surviving are his two stepdaughters, Terri and Toni McCormick, both of Mount Vernon; a stepson, Tim McCormick of Mount Vernon; his mother, Rose (Gwin) Benton of Mount Vernon; a sister, Pam Johnson of Mount Vernon; two brothers, Darrell of Rolling Hills Estates, Calif., and Bill of Mount Vernon; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Boone Funeral Home Mount Vernon Chapel, with burial in Old Beech Cemetery.
Friends may call from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Jacob Richter
CHANDLER, Ind. — Jacob D. “Jake” Richter, 26, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in an automobile accident on Indiana 62 west of Chandler.
He worked at Bootz Manufacturing in Evansville and North American Green in St. Wendel.
He was a member of the Chandler United Methodist Church.
Surviving are his wife of six years, Tula; two sons, Nicholas and Jacob K., both at home; his mother and stepfather, Laura and Tim Sullivan of Newburgh; his father, Terry L. Richter of Folsomville; his stepmother, Jean Wall of Folsomville; a sister, Michelle Riley of Boonville; a brother, Jarrod of Evansville; a stepbrother, Dan Sullivan of Evansville; grandparents, Marian Canarie and Anna Mildred and Burnell Edgar Richter; and stepgrandmother, Carolyn Sullivan.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Koehler Funeral Home Perigo Chapel, with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.

PRINCETON, Ind. — Allison K. Maikranz, 46, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Gibson General Hospital of heart failure.
Surviving are a daughter, Christy Creamer of Owensville; a son, Timothy of Hazelton; a sister, Leann Fiscus of Petersburg; two brothers, Duane Stiles of Oakland City and John S. Stiles of Francisco; a grandson, Alex Creamer; and a stepgranddaughter, Jessica Buchanan.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. today at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Francisco. Colvin Funeral Home is handling arrangements. There will be no visitation.

Zelma Richardson
PRINCETON, Ind. — Zelma L. Richardson, 87, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at Holiday Manor Nursing Home.
She had worked at a nursing home. She attended First General Baptist Church and the Nazarene Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Jayne Wright of Mt. Carmel, Ill., and Brenda McGill of Princeton; a brother, Paul Snow of Princeton; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Struble and a son, Charles Beckner.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Francisco. There will be no visitation at Colvin Funeral Home.

Thelma Wagner
PRINCETON, Ind. — Thelma Jo (Teipe) Wagner, 65, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Evansville of complications of scleroderma.
She retired from Gibson General Hospital as a nurse’s aide.
She was a life long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
She had been active in 4-H and was a Girl Scout leader.
She enjoyed painting, crafts and counted cross-stitch.
Surviving are her husband, of 46 years, Richard L.; three daughters, Patricia J. Bathgate of Princeton, Dr. Kathryn A. Sommer of LaPorte and Susan E. Pearson of Jeffersonville; three sons, Daniel R. of Evansville, Carl A. of New Albany and John B. of Princeton; three sisters, Mary Ann Meyer of Princeton, Wilma Kensler of Pascogoula, Miss., and Agnes Titzer of Santa Claus; a brother, Alvin Teipe of Evansville; and 14 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Colvin Funeral Home.

Dorothy Hellenberg
MOUNT VERNON, Ind. — Dorothy (Chapman) Hellenberg, 84, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at the Mount Vernon Nursing & Rehabilitation Center of cardiac arrest.
She had worked at Davis Men’s Wear, Overall Factory, and had been an Avon saleslady.
She was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ.
Surviving are her husband, Herman; three sons, Gary of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Dennis and Randy, both of Mount Vernon; two sisters, Grace Terry of Evansville and Hazel Strange of Mazon, Ill.; four grandchildren, Kimi, Amanda, Krystal and Zachary Hellenberg; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Norvell Funeral Home, with burial in Bellefontaine Cemetery.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Ruth Beckes
PRINCETON, Ind. — Ruth G. Beckes, 88, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Gibson General Hospital.
She was a former member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Maxine Lee Akers of Princeton; a son, Joe of Princeton; four grandchildren, Rita Byers, Charlene Critchfield, Hap Eric and Kirt Aron Beckes; and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Park Lawn Mausoleum in Evansville. There will be no visitation at Colvin Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to Gibson County Council on Aging.

Bessie Kasinger
VINCENNES, Ind. — Bessie Bernice Kasinger, 83, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Lodge of the Wabash.
Surviving is a niece.
Her husband, James G., died in 1974.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Smith Funeral Home in Lawrenceville, Ill., with burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery in St. Francisville, Ill.

SULLIVAN, Ky. — Gordon “Red” Hall, 86, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at his home.

Noretta Creasey
HENDERSON, Ky. — Noretta Berry Creasey, 87, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at Redbanks Nursing Home.
She was a member of Eastern Star and Sebree Christian Church in Sebree.
Surviving are two sons, Freddy of Frankfort and Charles Robert of Grand Blank, Mich.; a sister, Magdeline “Maggie” Perrin of Sebree; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Fred Cecil, died in 1990.
Arrangements are pending at Tapp Funeral Home.

W.N. Unsel
OWENSBORO, Ky. — W.N. Unsel, 92, died Sunday, at Owensboro Mercy Health System.
He had been a farmer.
He was a member of Yellow Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are four daughters, Lois Miller, Connie Clark, Bonnie Unsel and Libby Leach, all of Owensboro; a son, Charles Allen of Owensboro; 14 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Anna (Reid) and a son, William Allen.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at James H. Davies Funeral Home, with burial in Yellow Creek Baptist Church Cemetery in Thruston.

Paul Dempsey
STURGIS, Ky. — Paul A. Dempsey, 92, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at his home in Brighton, Mich.
He had worked at Detroit Diesel and General Motors.
He was a member of Westgate Masonic Lodge in Detroit.
Surviving are his wife of 69 years, Betty; a daughter, Nina Murry of Brighton; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at Whitsell Funeral Home, with burial in Pythian Ridge Cemetery.

John Willett
WAVERLY, Ky. — John L. “Johnny” Willett, 69, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Methodist Hospital of an apparent heart attack.
He worked for the city of Waverly.
He was a Korean War Army veteran and member of the St. Peter Catholic Church.
Surviving are his wife of 45 years, Betty Jean; two daughters, Barbara Jean Overfield of Waverly and Peggy Marie Turner of Morganfield; two sons, Mike Lucian and Timmy Lee, both of Waverly; two sisters, Susie Duncan of Morganfield and Theresa Nelson of Uniontown; 12 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Catholic Church, with burial in the church cemetery.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and from 8 a.m. to service time at the Whitsell Funeral Home in Morganfield.

Lucy Zoph
CARMI, Ill. — Lucy Zoph, 75, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at the Enfield Care Center of heart failure.
She had been a switch operator with the Penn Central Railroad.
Surviving are a daughter, Maryetta Taylor of Carmi; two sisters, Ruby Dill and Lena Wallace, both of Enfield; three grandchildren, Wesley Knowlton, Jeanette Heads and Marie Ott; and three great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Earl, died in 1992.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Campbell Funeral Home, with burial in Brown Cemetery in Crossville.

Leland Pennington
McLEANSBORO, Ill. — Leland Kenneth Pennington, 82, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at Hamilton Memorial Hospital.
He had worked in the oilfields for Texaco for 35 years.
He was a World War II Army veteran, serving with the 81st Infantry and was a member of the American Legion Post 106 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3851 of Carmi. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his wife, Mildred; a son, Gary of McLeansboro; a sister, Eloise Buchanan of St. Francisville; three grandchildren, B.J., Jessica and Adam Pennington; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Harre Funeral Home, with burial in Powell Cemetery, with military rites.

Bill Richards
FAIRFIELD, Ill. — Bill L. Richards, 62, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, at his home of cancer.
He was an engineer for Wayne-White Electric Corp.
He was a member, deacon, trustee and superintendent at Geff Christian Church.
Surviving are two sons, Clay and Ty, both of Fairfield; a sister, Martha Gregory of Fairfield; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Johnson Funeral Home, with burial in Maple Hill cemetery.

Patricia Pankey
ELDORADO, Ill. — Patricia Ann Pankey, 53, died Sunday, Feb. 6, 2000, at her home of cancer.
She attended St. Mary Catholic Church, and was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies’ Auxiliaries.
Surviving are her husband, Mickey; a daughter, Angela Faye Smith of Vienna; a son, John Naas of Junction; a stepson, Shannon Pankey of Stedman, N.C.; her mother, Louise Ashley of Eldorado; two sisters, Linda Phelps of Galatia and Carol Stein of Eldorado; two brothers, Dann Baugher of San Antonio, Texas, and Vernon Thomas Baugher of Kerrville, Texas; two grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Jeffrey Scott Naas.
Services and burial will be private. Watson Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Josephine Rhoten
OBLONG, Ill. — Josephine B. “Josie” Rhoten, 55, of Stoy, died Saturday, Feb. 5, 2000, in Crawford Memorial Hospital in Robinson from a heart attack.
She had worked at the Hershey Candy Co. for 30 years.
She was a member of the Bible Chapel Church in Robinson.
Surviving are her husband, Kenneth; her mother, Cora Meese of Oblong; two sisters, Marilyn Osborn of Oblong and Dorothy Ness of West Liberty; four brothers, Lavern, John and Gary Meese, all of Oblong, and George Meese of Robinson; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Pulliam Funeral Home in Oblong, with burial in Shire Cemetery in Stoy.
Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Larry Brock
Larry L. Brock, 62, of Newburgh, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at St. Mary’s Warrick Hospital of an apparent heart attack.
He retired in September 1999 from CSX Railroad after 31 years as an engineer. He attended Christ Chapel Church.
Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Mary (Johns); three sons, Randy L. of Princeton, Ind., Ray, at home, and Jeff of Evansville; two brothers, James of Princeton and Jerry of Brigham City, Utah; two grandchildren, Brandon and Ashley Brock; and five stepgrandchildren, Samantha Melton, Kyle Mincy and Travis, Jeremy and Ashley Beach.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Boone Funeral Home East Chapel, the Rev. J.T. Price officiating, with burial in Atkinson Chapel Cemetery in Oatsville, Ind. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Gladys Smith
Gladys June Smith, 86, of Evansville, died Thursday, Feb. 17, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital. She was a member of Grace Bap-
tist Church, a Sunday school and vacation Bible school teacher and a member of the Eastern Star in Pomona Park, Fla.
Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, with whom she lived, Ann and Jim Cavera of Evansville; a son, Michael of Warrenton, N.C.; and five grandchildren, Jim, Katie, Chris and Laura Cavera and Lee Ann Smith. Her husband, Hymie, died in 1998.
Funeral arrangements are pending at Carson McClane Funeral Home in Valdosta, Ga.

William “Slim” Evans, 82, of Evansville, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at North Park Nursing Center. He retired in 1978 from CSX Railroad, having worked for C&EI, L&N and CSX for 40 years.
He was a member of Albright United Methodist Church for more than 25 years and a volunteer driver for the Tri-State Food Bank. He was a World War II Army veteran and a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars 1114.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Frances (Garrett); a daughter, Pamela Rae Hill of Muncie, Ind.; two sons, Tommy Wayne of Evansville and John Rodney of Terre Haute, Ind.; four grandchildren, Heather Carlson, Brandie Coleman, Jennifer McCullough and John J. Evans; and five great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Browning Funeral Home with entombment in Locust Hill Mausoleum, with military rites. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
