Millard Black
Millard Haymond Black, 87, died Friday, Feb. 18, 2000, at Cypress Grove Rehabilitation Center.
He established the Brown Military Academy of the Ozarks, was head of the Brown Military Academy in San Diego, Calif., and taught for the U.S. Department of Indian Affairs.
He had been head of the sixth-grade curriculum for the Los Angeles city schools and helped write two elementary textbooks. He retired in 1977 from the Los Angeles school district.
He was a World War II Army veteran and had been on the staff of Gen. Douglas MacArthur in the counter-intelligence section. He received two Bronze Stars, the Good Conduct Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.
He was a graduate of John Brown University and had a degree in education from Temple University.
He was Episcopalian and had taught Sunday school and played the organ in several churches around the country.
Surviving are two adopted sons, Ronald Bundy and Robert Hicklin, both of Newburgh; two grandchildren, Stuart Hicklin and Tammy Hicklin Cox; and nephews.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Evansville. There will be no visitation at Simpson Funeral Home Newburgh Chapel.
Ruby Hoskins
Ruby L. Majors Hoskins, 65, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital of heart failure.
Surviving are two daughters, Ruby Cook of Mount Vernon, Ind., and Debra Burden of Evansville; a son, Robert of Evansville; and seven grandchildren, Shaun and Joshua Burden, Amanda, Britney, Zach and Jean Claude Majors and Dylan Cook.
Services will be at noon Thursday at Browning Funeral Home, with burial in Park Lawn Cemetery.

Roger L. Williams, 51, of Evansville, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at St. Mary’s Medical Center of renal failure.
He worked at CSX Transportation for 30 years.
He collected antique cars.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Rosa; three daughters, Rolinda Cary of Fort Riley, Kan., Robin Mealy of Richmond, Va., and Ramona Williams of Evansville; a son, Roger Jr. of Ruthville, Va.; his parents, Robert and Rose Lee Williams of Williamsburg, Va.; three sisters, Virginia Lyttle of Surrey, Va., Ruth Ann Chestnut of Williamsburg and Nancy Canady of Dinwoodie, Va.; five brothers, Robert Jr. of Smithville, Va., Earnest P. of Williamsburg, Lorenzo of Richmond, Va., and Jeremiah of Newport News, Va.; eight grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be at 4 p.m. today at Alexander Funeral Home East Chapel, Ira Parrish officiating, burial will be in Williamsburg, Va.

Olive Wellmeier
Olive A. Wellmeier, 73, formerly of Evansville, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, in Manhattan, Kan., from complications of a heart attack.
She was a member of St. Lucas United Church of Christ.
She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1114 Ladies Auxiliary in Evansville.
Surviving are a son, Harold W. of Manhattan; a sister, Eleanor Huff of Tell City; a brother, Alfred Amos of Tell City; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Her husband, Samuel A., died in 1995 and a son, Samuel Jr., died in 1996.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Evansville the Rev. Thomas F. Webster officiating.

Bettye Adler
Bettye C. Adler, 86, of Evansville, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital.
She was vice president of Adler Food Co. and Adler Distributing Co.
She was on the board of the Indiana Hospital Auxiliaries and served as president of the St. Mary’s Medical Center Ladies Auxiliary from 1964 to 1965.
Surviving are nieces and nephews.
Her husband, Leo, died in 1994.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Ziemer Funeral Home East Chapel, continuing at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict Cathedral, the Revs. Gregory Chamberlain and Harold Hammerstein officiating, with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

Robert Chapman
Robert Chapman, 79, of Evansville, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Deaconess Hospital from complications of diabetes.
He was a diesel mechanic and a World War II Army Air Corps veteran.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Ruth (Whitson); two daughters, Patsy Frasier of Evansville and Helen Watts of Indianapolis; a son, Bob of Evansville; three sisters; a brother; 13 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
A son, David, died in 1994.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery Chapel, the Rev. Phil Hamner officiating, with burial in the cemetery. There will be no visitation at Browning Funeral Home.
Marcella Brown
Marcella I. “Sally” Brown, 78, of Evansville, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Select Specialty Hospital of Evansville of respiratory failure.
She was a member of Good Shepherd Catholic Church.
Surviving are two daughters, Melissa Brown and Melodie Cargill, both of Evansville; two sisters, Marie Bruchsel of Evansville and Rosetta Yates of Cincinnati; and two granddaughters, Nicki and Ashley Ogg.
Her husband, Roy A “Bussie,” died in 1984.

Gilbert Critchfield
BOONVILLE, Ind. — Gilbert “Gib” Critchfield, 85, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Boonville Convalescent Center.
He had been the superintendent of light and power for the city of Boonville from 1944 to 1981.
He was a deacon, a youth fellowship worker, Sunday school teacher and officeholder at Faith United Methodist Church.
He was active in the community, working with the Boy Scouts and Little League baseball and basketball. He was a Jaycee Man of the Year.
Surviving are his wife of 67 years, Helen (Johnson); two daughters, Gloria Wiygul of Boonville and Sylvia Davis of Evansville; a son, Al “Butch” of Rockport; two sisters, Jeanette Simon of Bellwood, Ill., and Alice Bogdajecizc of Spring Lake, Mich.; six grandchildren, Kelly Barnett, Kimberly Whitmore, Kerry Davis, Kevin Wiygul, Bryan Critchfield and Jeff Chamberlin; three stepgrandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
A daughter, Susie Chamberlin, died in 1986.

TELL CITY, Ind. — Earl E. Claise, 76, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Owensboro Mercy Health System from a heart attack.
He worked for the Tell City Chair Co. for 25 years before retiring in 1980.
He was a member of the Evangelical United Church of Christ.
Surviving are his wife, Marie (Cantner); two daughters, Cathy and Tina Claise, both of Tell City; two sons, Rick and Wayne, both of Tell City; three sisters, Mary Dauby, Amy Gerlach and Clara Peter, all of Tell City; two brother, Frank and Leonard, both of Tell City; and nine grandchildren, Rene Cronin, Eli, Miranda, Billy Joe, Wesley, Bryan, Mandy, Cassie and Tara Claise.
A daughter, Loretta Marie Claise, died in infancy.

He was a life member of the Posey County Saddle Club and had been active in the Golden Gloves in 1943.
Surviving are his wife of 51 years, Ruby Mae; a daughter, Sandra Morris of Cynthiana; a stepson, James Lee of Chicago; a brother, Vernon of Norris City, Ill.; two granddaughters, Cindy Magnussen and Gayla Schapker; eight stepgrandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and 16 stepgreat-grandchildren.

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. — Zola F. VanMeter Ringo, 79, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Good Samaritan Nursing Home.
She was a member of St. Matthew’s United Church of Christ in Lynnville and Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eagles Lodge Ladies Auxiliaries.
Surviving are five stepdaughters, Janice Mitchell of Oakland City, Judith Hunt and Lorain Harris, both of Boonville, Johnette Ringo of Mount Washington, Ky., and Becky James of Dale; a son, Barry VanMeter of Oakland City; four grandchildren, Andy, Brandy, Peyton and Blayne VanMeter; 14 stepgrandchildren; 28 stepgreat-grandchildren; and five stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
Her first husband, Arba VanMeter, died in 1975; her second husband, John Ringo, died this month; and a stepdaughter, Eva Leonard, died in 1992.

She had been the secretary at Murdoch Lumber Co. She and her late husband, James Donald, owned and operated the Boardwalk Motel from 1936 to 1966.

REED, Ky. — Frances M. Peay, 63, died Monday, Feb. 21 2000, at Select Specialty Hospital of Evansville of heart failure.
She was a registered nurse.
She was Catholic.

PROVIDENCE, Ky. — Malcolm Gibson, 89, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at Madisonville Regional Medical Center.
He was a livestock dealer and auctioneer and co-owner of the Gibson Brothers Livestock Co. in Providence. He trained and exhibited quarter horses and enjoyed trail riding.
He was a member of the Stover Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Anne Conrad of Providence; a son, Mack of Providence; three grandchildren, Suzanne Kuester, John Conrad and Sarah Gibson; and two great-grandchildren.
His wife, Claudia, died in 1994.

Manitou, Ky. — James O. “Jay” Lutz, 91, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Madisonville Regional Medical Center.
He retired from the P&M Coal Co. in 1970.
He was a member of the Antioch Primitive Baptist Church and had been song leader there and at several other Primitive Baptist Churches in the area.
Surviving are a daughter, Anita Harris of Manitou; seven sisters, Nettie Clayton of Cary, N.C., Mabel Lutz and Rachel Stum, both of Madisonville, Luetta Weedman and Betty Hawkins, both of Nashville, Tenn., and Dorothy Russell and Janet Reis, both of Bristol, Tenn.; a brother, Emerson of Madisonville; and nieces and nephews.
His wife Ruby Marie (Allinder), died in 1976.

He was a carpenter and had worked for the Princeton Lumber Co. for 25 years.
He was a member of Prospect Missionary Baptist Church.
Surviving are a daughter, Amanda Robinson of Providence; a son, Junior of Providence; his mother, Opal Dorris Robinson of Princeton; two sisters, Patsy Brown of Hopkins County and Zida Bonn of Mayfield; three brothers, Jimmy and Lesley, both of Hopkins County, and Wesley of Caldwell County; and nieces and nephews.

Jesse Owens
HENDERSON, Ky. — Jesse Lee Owens, 97, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at Methodist Hospital.
He was a member of the New Hope Pentecostal Church.
Surviving are his wife, Brenda Faye; three daughters, Lucille Spainhoward, Helen Limp and Virginia Chandler, all of Henderson; four sons, Bethel and Jesse J., both of Henderson, and Bernard of Evansville and Clifton of Boron, Calif.; 32 grandchildren, 61 great-grandchildren; 34 great-great-grandchildren; and a great-great-great-grandchild.
His first wife, Lorene, died in 1978, and a son, Melvin, died in 1963.

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ill. — Rowena Fyffe, 80, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at the United Methodist Village.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in St. Francisville and the Eastern Star.
Surviving are a daughter, Ann Fulton of Lawrenceville; a son, Kim of Lawrenceville; a sister, Erma Jones of New Mexico; a granddaughter, Angela Wright; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Stanley, and an infant son.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday in Sumner City Cemetery. There will be no visitation at Emmons-Macey & Steffey Funeral Home.
Infant Cameron Dunk
SHAWNEETOWN, Ill. — Cameron Nickolas Dunk, 4-month old son of Norma and Ronald Dunk of Shawneetown, died Monday, Feb. 21, 2000, at the Harrisburg Medical Center. He was born premature and had been in and out of the hospital since birth.
Also surviving are three brothers, Michael, Christopher and Steven, all of Shawneetown; and his grandmother, Rose Dunk of Junction.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m.today in the Elmwood Cemetery in Equality.
