Nichole Marie Emmons
WASHINGTON - Nichole Marie Emmons, 8, of Washington, died Jan. 30, 2004, at her home.
She was born Aug. 3, 1995, in Burlington, daughter of Bernard and Rosie (Bapp) Emmons Jr.
She was a third-grade student at Washington Elementary School. She had lived in Washington all her life.
She loved music, finger painting and being outdoors.
Survivors include her parents of Washington; a sister, Jennifer Ann Meyer-Emmons of Washington; grandparents, Bernard and Theresa Emmons Sr. of Washington and Ruth Bapp of Bristol; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
She was predeceased by her grandfather, Arthur Bapp.
Friends may call Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre.
The funeral will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Robert Bartram, pastor of the Washington Baptist Church, officiating.

Marie F. Walker
BARRE TOWN - Marie F. Walker, 65, of Barre Town died Jan. 30, 2004, at her home following a battle with cancer.
A complete obituary will appear in a later edition. Arrangements are under the direction of Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home of Barre.

Blanche R. Bottaro
NASHVILLE, TN. Blanche R. Bottaro, 88, a long time resident of Spring Street in Barre, died Monday, January 26, 2004 at the Woodlands South Retirement Center there. She had moved to Nashville to be near her daughter, Norma.
She was born in Barre City, February 10, 1915, daughter of Joseph and Zina (Rossi) Restelli. She attended Barre schools and was a graduate of Goddard Seminary. On June 20, 1934 she married Natale Bottaro in Barre. Following their marriage, they made their home in Barre. He died April 15, 1954.
She was a long time employee of the Vermont Agency of Transportation as an accounting clerk, retiring October 31, 1985. She enjoyed traveling and reading. She was a member of the Barre Congregational Church and the Evening club of the church.
Survivors include her daughter, Norma of Nashville, TN and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased in death by three sisters, Edvidge Mitchell, Clelia Rizzi and Emma Abbiati.
A service of remembrance will be held at a time to be announced in May at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street in Barre. Later internment will be made in the Hope Cemetery. There are no calling hours. George A. Donovan, Rites
WASHINGTON Funeral services for George A. Donovan of Main Street, who died January 23, 2004 at his home, were held Wednesday at 2:00 PM in the Washington Baptist Church.
The Rev. Robert Bartram pastor of the church and the Rev. Albert Collins, former pastor of the Washington Baptist Church and the current pastor of the Websterville Baptist Church, officiated.
Organist Barbara Lasell accompanied the congregation in the Hymns, Great is Thy Faithfulness and Blessed Assurance. She also accompanied soloist, Carmella Tucker, in the song Each Step I Take on the piano.
Son, Bruce Donovan, played a medley of songs on the guitar, including his father s favorite, The City of New Orleans. He also recited excerpts from the poem Casey at the Bat as his dad was an avid Red Sox baseball fan.
Words of remembrance were offered by his son, James Donovan, and several members of the congregation.
The bearers were his sons, Bruce, James and George Donovan; nephews, Peter and Leslie Griffith and cousin, Gary Glynn. Entombment was made at the Elmwood Vault in Barre to await burial in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Washington.
Fellowship and refreshment followed in the church fellowship hall. The Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street in Barre was in charge.

Norman C. Goddard Rites
MIDDLESEX A funeral service for Norman C. Goddard, who died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, was held Thursday at Guare and Sons Funeral Home in Montpelier.
The Rev. Deacon Regis Cummings of St. Augustine Church officiated the service.
Members of the American Legion Post 3 offered a prayer.
Craig and David Montgomery offered words of remembrance.
Craig Montgomery, David Montgomery, Leroy Brett, Dick Henrickson, Perry Grange and Jim Pinardi were pallbearers.
A committal service will be held in the spring at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Center in Randolph.

Leona G. Hackett
EAST RANDOLPH Leona G. Hackett, of East Randolph, died Tuesday night, Jan. 27th, at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin.
She was born in Bethel, VT, the daughter of Charles J. and Mary A. (Bird) Gratton. She was raised in Bethel, VT, and was married to John Hackett, who died in 1980. She had lived in East Randolph and White River Junction, before moving to Barre four years ago. She had been a dental assistant for Dr. Reid in Randolph, and at the Veteran s Hospital in White River Junction.
Leona was a life member of the Middle Branch Grange, and was a wonderful cook, homemaker, and grandmother.
She is survived by her daughters, Nancy Hutchins and her husband, Lloyd Hutchins Jr., and Mary Welch, all of Barre; brother, Fred Gratton, of Windsor, VT; two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
She was predeceased by a son, Skip Hackett; a brother, James Gratton; and two great-grandchildren.
At Leona s request, there will be no calling hours, and Graveside Services will be held in May at the East Randolph Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Woodridge Nursing Home Activity Fund, PO Box 550, Barre, VT 05641, or to the Central Vermont Home Health and Hospice, 600 Granger Road, Barre, VT 05641. Arrangements are by The Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Howard Jerry
WEST BERLIN Howard Jerry, 87, of West Berlin, died Monday, Jan. 26, 2004, at the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin.
He was born July 11, 1916, in Orange, the son of Joseph Burt and Elizabeth (Machia) Jerry.
He married Helen Isabelle Smith in 1948 in Barre; she died in 2000.
He worked with his father on their family farm in Orange for many years, farming and maple sugaring. He later was employed as a carpenter for Earl Hoyt. He retired in 1962.
He is survived by his son, Howard Jerry of Montpelier; a sister, Dorothy Duranleau of Orange; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Vernal Jerry.
There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. May 26, 2004, at the West Berlin Cemetery.
Donations may be made to the charity of one s choice. The Kingston Funeral Home in Northfield is in charge of arrangements.

Virginia May Oakes
PIERMONT, N.H. Virginia May Oakes of Piermont, N.H., died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at her home from a long illness.
She was born May 19, 1936, the daughter of Allen and Madeline Rogers of Vershire.
She married Wendell Oakes on August 3, 1956. They raised their family in Piermont, N.H.
She was active in 4-H clubs with her children. She worked part time while she raised her family.
She enjoyed holidays with her family, cooking, gardening, Hummels, traveling in her motor home, and the ocean.
She is survived by her husband, Wendell Oakes; sons, Dale, Rodney, and Daniel; daughter, Brenda Lee Oakes; a brother, Earl Rogers of Vershire; sisters, Joyce McCarthy and Sally Josler of White River Junction; and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 31, at the Bradford Congregational Church with the Rev. Elizabeth Upton officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Children s Hospital at Dartmouth, Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, 1 Medical Center Dr., Lebanon, NH 03755.

JULIA PAQUIN
BARRE Julia Paquin, 92, formerly of 455 North Main Street, passed away Thursday, January 29, 2004 at the Berlin Health and Rehab Center in Berlin, Vt.
Born on July 13, 1911 in Beebe, Quebec she was the daughter of the late Albert and Elizabeth (Mills) Flanders. She attended schools in Canada.
In 1926 she married George Conner in Newport, Vt. He passed away in 1941. On December 31, 1963 she married Alfred Paquin in St. Anne Church, in Milton, Vt. He passed away in 1974. She was employed at the Rock of Ages Capacitor Plant in Barre before her employment at the Woolen Mills in Winooski, Vt. She later owned and operated a private care home in Milton, Vt. She made her home in Waterbury for several years before returning to Barre where she resided at the North Barre Manor.
She was a former member of the Baptist Church in Newport, and the R.V.A. in Winooski, Vt. Julia also was a senior volunteer at the North Barre Manor.
Her favorite pastime was playing cards with her friends, doing word search puzzles and watching t.v.
Survivors include, one son, Robert and his wife, Bernice Conner of Jericho, Vt.; two daughters, Helen and her husband, Preston Taylor of Meridian, Idaho; Margaret Cushing of Washington, Vt.; 26 grandchildren; 61 great-grandchildren and 32 great-great-grandchildren. Julia is also survived by one brother, Leonard Flanders of Beebe, Que.; one sister, Margaret Wilcox of Jensen Beach, Fla.; 8 stepchildren residing in Vermont, Ohio, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Louisiana.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Elsie Lavers and Myrtle Flanders; three brothers, Sidney Flanders, Clarence Flanders and Gilbert Flanders.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 31, 2004 at 2 p.m. in the First Baptist Church in Barre with the Pastor Craig Thompson officiating.
Calling hours were held on Friday at the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home in Barre.
Entombment will be in the Elmwood Vault in Barre with later spring burial in the Woodside Cemetery in Beebe, Quebec.
Services are in the care of the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre, Vt.

James Patchen
WARREN, Mass. James Patchen, 76, of Warren, Mass., died Saturday, Jan. 17, 2004, at Mary Lane Hospital in Ware, Mass., from cancer.
He was born on Aug. 8, 1927, in Lowville, N.Y., the son of Harold and Lera (Franks) Patchen.
He served in the U.S. Navy. He worked as a farmer, and he lived in New York, Massachusetts, and Vermont.
He is survived by his daughters, Ronda Quigley of Barre, Joanne Dunster and Diane Slora of East Montpelier, Darletha Patchen of Warren, Mass., Ruby Bacon of Brimfield, Mass., and Deborah Patchen of Baxley, Ga.; sons, Darrell Patchen of Barre, Dennis, Rodney, and John Patchen of North Brookfield, Mass., and James Jr. (Rick) and Daniel Patchen of Davenport, Fla.; a brother, Virgil; sisters, Charlotte, Pat, Ruth, Margaret, Aleta, and Shirley; 39 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
He was predecesed by his wife, Rita Patchen; a brother, Harold; and a sister, Bernice.
Funeral services were held Jan. 21, 2004, at the Pillsbury Funeral Home in Brookfield, Mass. Burial will be in the spring at the Walnut Grove Cemetery in North Brookfield, Mass.

Jane P. Bowen
ROCHESTER Jane P. Bowen, 55, of Rochester, died Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2004, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.
She was born August 13, 1948, in Hanover, N.H., the daughter of Lloyd Bill and Irma (Reed) Perry.
She graduated from Rochester High School in 1966, and from Champlain College in Burlington, in 1968.
She was employed at Hubbard s Store for several years, and later owned her own property management business in Rochester.
She married Barry Bowen on Oct. 20, 1973, in Hancock.
She was a member of the Rochester Federated Church. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, helping others, and animals.
She is survived by her husband, Barry Bowen of Rochester; a son, James Bowen of Rochester; a daughter, Bobbi-Jo Bowen of Burlington; her mother of Rochester; a brother, David Perry of Rochester; and a niece.
She was predeceased by her father, Lloyd Perry.
Private graveside services will be held in the spring at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Rochester. Friends may join the family for an informal gathering from 12 to 4 p.m. on Sat. Jan. 31 at the home of David and Lucia Perry, 1577 Brook St., Rochester.

Wayne Alton Breer Sr.
BARRE TOWN Wayne Alton Breer Sr., 74, of Breer Road, died Wednesday, January 28, 2004, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin. He had been in ill health for several years.
Born February 11, 1929 in Sheldon, he was the son of Harold and Alice (Bean) Breer. He attended East Montpelier School and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1947.
From 1947 to 1950, he served in the United States Navy.
While living in Connecticut, he worked for International Silver and American Cyanamid Companies. After returning to Vermont, he worked for Sprague Electric Company in Barre for several years. In 1960, he and his brother, Wilbur Pete Breer Sr. founded Breer Brothers Inc. Concrete Contractors.
His memberships included the Canadian Club and the Elks Lodge 1535 both of Barre. His interests included gardening and feeding and watching birds at his many feeders. An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, New England Patriots, and Dallas Cowboys.
Survivors include his wife of thirty-two years, the former Betty (Bagley) Bergeron of Barre; two sons, Danny Breer of Orange and Wayne Breer Jr. and his wife, Maryann of Montpelier; two daughters, Cherie Brown and her husband, James of Smithville, TN and Marcy Beede and her husband, Francis of Washington; two step-sons, Gary Bergeron of Montpelier and Douglas Bergeron of Barre; ten grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four sisters, Evelyn Long and Beverly Bagalio and her husband, Pete, all of Montpelier, Marilyn Perry of Barre, and Shriley Wright of East Montpelier; nieces and nephews.
Three brothers, Clifford Breer, George Breer, and Wilbur Pete Breer Sr. predeceased him.
His funeral service will be held in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre, this morning, Friday at 10:00 a.m. with the Rev. Herman Benjamin, pastor of the Hedding United Methodist Church, officiating.

Gwendolyn M. Gwen Brown
BARRE Gwendolyn M. Gwen Brown, 87, of Averill Street, died Thursday, January 29, 2004 at her home.
She was born March 10, 1916 in Barre City the daughter of Frank and Isa (Parkhurst) Colvin. She attended Barre Schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in 1933.
On May 12, 1948 she married Arthur P. Brown in Burlington. Their entire married life was together on Averill Street. He died February 24, 1988.
She worked with her husband as a dispatcher and bookkeeper at the former Central Cab Company. Later she was bookkeeper for Wark Brothers Beverage Company in South Barre. She enjoyed reading mysteries and doing crossword puzzles. Gwen was a member of the Church of the Good Shepard (Episcopal) in Barre.
Survivors include her daughter, Jean Wright and son-in-law, Earl of Burlington; several nieces and nephews.

James Leo LaFond, Rites
BERLIN A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Thursday, January 29, 2004 at 11 a.m. in St. Monica Catholic Church, in Barre, for James Leo LaFond of River Run Manor, who passed away January 25, 2004 at his home.
The Rev. Henry P. Furman, Parochial Vicar of the Church, was the celebrant.
Crucifer, Albert Gagnon, was altar server and led the Prayer of the Faithful.
Organist, Angeline Ennis, accompanied soloists, Romeo Bilodeau and Richard Shadroui in the hymns, Here I Am Lord, The King of Love My Shepard Is, Be Not Afraid, One Bread, One Body and On Eagles Wings.
The Old Testament reading was given by Jill LaFond and Samantha LaFond read from the New Testament, both granddaughters.
Offertory gifts were presented at the altar by Anna Duprey, Leo s companion; Stewart LaFond and Jeffrey LaFond, both sons.
Active bearers were Leo s grandchildren, Brian LaFond, Hillary LaFond, Jill LaFond, Dominique LaFond, Samantha LaFond and Benjamin LaFond.
In attendance were a delegation of employees from Cody Chevrolet of the Barre-Montpelier Road.
A Prayer Service was held Wednesday evening at the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, in Barre, and was led by Father Furman.
A later spring burial will be in St. Monica s Cemetery in Barre. Following the service, a fellowship luncheon was held for family and friends at the Barre Canadian Club.

Mila E. Rogers
WEST NEWBURY Mila E. Rogers, 98, of West Newbury, died Wednesday, Jan. 28, 2004, at Cottage Hospital in Woodsville, N.H.
She was born on Aug. 9, 1905, in Chicago, Ill., the daughter of John and Alma (St. John) Egley.
She moved to Chelsea when she was six years old, and attended schools there.
She was married to Lloyd B. Rogers in 1923. She raised her family in West Newbury, where she also operated a family farm with her husband.
She enjoyed farming, the outdoors, making meals for visiting hunters, playing cards, music and her family.
She is survived by daughters, May Shearer of St. Albans, and Polly Van Buren of Newbury; sons, Oliver Bud Rogers and Theodore Ted Rogers of Bradford, and Steven Rogers of West Newbury; a sister, Alma Turner of Palm Bay, Fla.; a brother, Bruce Roberts of Hendersonville, 15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and 14 great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 2, in the West Newbury Church, with the Rev. Donald Towle officiating. There are no calling hours. Interment will be in the spring in the family lot in the West Newbury Cemetery.

Mary I. Badger
BETHEL A funeral service for Mary I. Badger, who died Jan. 23, 2004, at Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center, was held Monday at Guare and Sons Funeral Home in Montpelier.
The Rev. Dr. Claire Bamberg, pastor of the United Church of Bethel, officiated. Esther Brigham was the organist.
Burial will be held in the spring at North Branch Cemetery in Middlesex.

Lucien H. Boisvert, Rites
BARRE CITY Funeral services were held Wednesday, January 28, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, in Barre, for Lucien H. Boisvert of 11 Averill Street, who passed away January 24, 2004 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt.
The Rev. Henry P. Furman, Parochial Vicar of St. Monica Church of Barre, officiated.
Pre-recorded hymns were, 'Panis Angelicus,' 'Ave Verum Corpus,' 'Ave Maria' and 'Faith Of Our Fathers.'
Words of remembrance were offered by Scott Gagnon and other members of the congregation.
Active bearers were, Emile Boisvert, brother; Jason Slayton, Heath George, Willie Blonden, all nephews; Pete Edson and Shawn Perkins, both friends.
Burial was in Hope Cemetery, in Barre, where Father Furman offered Committal Prayers.
Following the burial a fellowship luncheon was held for family and friends at the Barre Elk s Lodge #1535.
Services were in the care of the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre, Vt.

David Hatch Edson
RANDOLPH - David Hatch Edson, 75, of Randolph, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2003, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a prolonged illness.
He was born in Weehawken, N.J., on March 12, 1928, the son of Carroll A. Edson and Hazel Partridge Edson. He grew up primarily in Brookfield.
He received a BA from Dartmouth College and a MA from Colgate University.
He married Elizabeth Pierce on August 23, 1952.
He served in the army during WWII as a Security Agency Technician 4th Class.
He was employed as a College Administrator at Colgate University, Hobart College, and for 35 years at Dartmouth College. He was also the comptroller at Dartmouth College for many years.
He was an Eagle Scout. He also served as an auditor for the Norwich Finance Committee, as a clerk and moderator for the Dresden School District, as a treasurer for the Norwich Church, on the Business Committee of the Norwich Church, as a clerk and head usher of the Sharon Church, and as treasurer of the Bethany Church in Randolph.
He was also involved with other local churches, the Vermont Conference, the Randolph Area Food Shelf, and the Randolph Area Habitat for Humanity.
He is survived by his wife; three children, Susan Wiszniak of Wethersfield, Conn., Stuart Pierce Edson of Brookfield, and Lynn Sheldon of Mexico, N.Y.; a sister, Lucile Smith of Concord, Mass.; three grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a brother, Stuart Edson; a sister, Virginia Deuel; and a grandson, Patrick Sheldon.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. at the Bethany Church in Randolph on Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003. There will no calling hours. However, all are welcome to the service and to the following reception at the church. Interment will be held at a later date in the Brookfield Cemetery in Brookfield.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Randolph Area Habitat for Humanity, Box 211, Randolph, VT.
The Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea are in charge of the arrangements.
