Robert C. Spooner
BARRE – Robert C. Spooner, 63, of Barre, died Sunday, Nov. 30, 2003, at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
He was born Sept. 4, 1940, in Moretown, the son of Clyde L. and Jessica E. (Bradley) Spooner.
He attended schools in Moretown and Graniteville.
He married Janevie Thrusher in 1961 in the Websterville Baptist Church. She died in 1963. He later married Zelta Thurston. They lived in Graniteville and Washington. They later divorced.
He was employed as a quarryman for the Rock of Ages Corporation in Graniteville, as a mechanic for Perry Auto in Barre, and at Huntington Homes in Berlin and East Montpelier until his retirement due to ill health.
He was an avid bingo player, and also enjoyed playing cards, listening to country music, and spending time with family and friends.
He is survived by his four children, Reginald Spooner and Sheila Spooner, of Charlotte, N.C., Anette M. Hayward of Williamstown, and Rhonda Wendel of Barre; three sisters, Joan Brooks of Montpelier, Betty Armour of Barre, and Ruth Carter of Berlin; two brothers, Howard “Bill” Spooner of Williamstown and Raymond “Rocky” Spooner of South Ryegate; nine grandchildren and one great-granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, two sisters, Barbara Smith and Nancy J. Pelkey, and an infant daughter, Lisa Ann Spooner.
His funeral will be held 7 p.m. Friday at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home in Barre. A calling hour will be held from 6 p.m. until the time of service on Friday. Interment
will be at a later date.

Carol Herschel Straus
AUSTIN, TEXAS - Carol Herschel Straus, 66, of Austin, Texas, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003, at her home, from pancreatic cancer.
She was born Jan. 17, 1937, in Hasbrouck Heights, N.J., the daughter of C. Andrew Herschel and Mary Louise Swain Herschel of Montpelier.
She and her family moved to Montpelier in 1945, where she attended public schools and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1954. She graduated from Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pa., with a degree in English and journalism in 1958.
She married Thomas P. Straus on July 19, 1958, in Montpelier. In 1964, they moved to White Plains, N.Y., and then to Rye, N.Y. They moved to Austin, Texas, in 2000.
She had a career in jewelry design. She created and sold jewelry, and also taught the craft. She participated in craft shows, wrote for “Bead and Button” magazine, taught workshops, and had exhibits throughout the Northeast.
She was active in volunteer work at her children’s schools, in church work, and with the American Diabetes Association. She was a member of the Bead Societies of Greater New York, Austin, Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas.
She enjoyed jazz music, concerts, cruises, and the New York Mets.
She is survived by her husband, Tom; sons, James Bradford and Stephen Day of Austin, Texas, and Douglas William of Falmouth, Maine, and daughter Phebe Brecher of Santa Fe, N.M.; a brother, James Andrew Herschel of Cinnaminson, N.J.; and a sister, Elisabeth Herschel Gambler of Montpelier.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 6, 2003, at Westlake United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas.
A private service will be held next summer at the family camp in the Adirondacks.

Fred Baldor
BARRE - Fred Baldor, 88, of the Tilden House and formerly of East Barre and Washington, died June 12, 2003, at the Berlin Health and Rehab Center.
He was born in Mont-pelier on June 2, 1915, son of Endelecio and Julia (Picado) Baldor. He graduated from Spaulding High School in 1935. He played on the high school baseball team as a pitcher, first baseman and outfielder and was team captain his senior year.
On June 26, 1936, he married Amelia 'Millie' Rueda. They were long time residents of Washington. She died Sept. 10, 1993.
For almost 40 years, he worked as a route salesman for the former Granite City Creamery in Barre, and later worked on the custodial staff at Spaulding High School.
He was an avid hunter, fisherman and baseball fan. He had a tryout with the Chicago White Sox, a major league baseball team, as a young man and had played semi-pro baseball in the central Vermont area for many years. He later managed the East Barre Town baseball team in the Town Summer League.
He was a veteran of U.S. Army service during World War II, having been a sergeant in the military police, serving in the European, African and Middle Eastern Theaters of Operation.
He was a life member of McKenzie - Webster VFW Post #790, the Barre American Legion Post #10 and the Lt. William Fitzgerald Chapter #6 DAV of Rutland. He also belonged to the Chelsea Fish and Game Club.
Survivors include his caregiver and sister-in-law, Mary Baldor of Barre and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother, John.
It is the deceased¡¦s wish that no services are planned.

Lawrence Cane
WORCESTER - Lawrence Cane, 51, of Route 12 in Worcester, died June 15, 2003, at his home.
He was born June 18, 1951 in Worcester, the son of Herbert and Madine (Celley) Cane.
He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1969.
Mr. Cane worked as an excavation superintendent for D.E. Packard Co. and earlier had worked for the town of Worcester, Blue Seal Feeds and on the family farm in Worcester.
He married Bonnie Powers March 11, 1972.
He was a former chief of the Worcester Volunteer Fire Department.
Survivors include his wife of Worcester; a son Craig Cane of Worcester; a daughter Kris Belisle of Worcester; a brother Timothy Cane of Worcester; a sister Deborah Winters of Middlesex; five grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.
A sister Regena Shatney and a granddaughter, Kilynne N. Deforge, are deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Barber & Lanier Funeral Home in Montpelier.

Dana Jay Carbonneau
BARRE TOWN - Dana Jay Carbonneau, 46, of Barre Town died suddenly on June 13, 2003 at Copley Hospital due to injuries incurred in an automobile accident.
He was born April 23, 1957 in Barre, VT, the son of Adrian and Betty Jean (Donald) Carbonneau.
He attended public schools in Montpelier and graduated in 1975 from Montpelier High. He did his teacher certification studies at Johnson State College, graduating in 1984 with a B.A. in Education and in 1994 with an M.A. in Education/Administration.
Mr. Carbonneau was the principal of Orleans Central School. Previously, he had served as principal of Brownington Elementary and as a classroom teacher in Williamstown schools. Known as 'Mr. C,' he brought warmth and gentle humor to his students and staff. He was always able to make people laugh.
On April 16th, 1998 Dana married Helen Fischer in St. Monica¡¦s Church in Barre. They made their home in Barre with their children.
He was a member of St. Monica¡¦s Catholic Church in Barre. He was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
He was an avid bowler. He enjoyed cartoons, golf and blackjack. He especially enjoyed the time he spent with his children and school children. His family and many friends will sadly miss him.
Survivors include: his wife Helen (Fischer) Carbonneau; one daughter Alison Marie Carbonneau; one son Edouard Herman Adrian Carbonneau; his parents Adrian and Betty Jean (Donald) Carbonneau, all of Barre Town; one brother Gary of Grantville, Kansas and his wife Ara; a sister Linda Greaves of Morrisville and her husband Stephen; a sister Emily Raspe of St. Petersburg, Florida; three nephews, two nieces, one grandniece, many aunts, uncles, cousins and also the students of Orleans Central School.
His grandparents Edouard and Rosa Carbonneau, and Fred and Emily Donald are deceased. Also a brother-in-law Wayne Raspe.
The Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre is handling the funeral arrangements. On Tuesday the calling hours will be from 2 to 4 pm for members of the family only and from 7 to 9 pm for friends. On Wednesday a mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 am in St. Monica¡¦s Roman Catholic Church in Barre. Committal services will be held at a later date in Wilson Cemetery.

Jules Chatot
BARRE - Jules J. Chatot, 90, formerly of Lincoln House, died June 13th at his home at Joe¡¦s Pond in Cabot.
He was born in Frasne, France July 3, 1912, son of Auguste and Ernestine (Barthelet) Chatot. He attended Barre schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in the class of 1930.
Following graduation, he began his long association with the Barre granite industry, first as a granite polisher for the former Jones Brothers¡¦ Granite Company and in 1946 he and his partner, John Leppanen purchased the North Barre Granite Company. Following Mr. Leppanen¡¦s retirement in 1965, Mr. Chatot became sole owner and operator of the company until his retirement in 1982 when he sold the business to his daughter Judee Chatot-Travis and nephew Charles Chatot who continue to operate the company today.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Service during W.W.II as a Seabee, enlisting in 1944, serving on the Island of Guam in the Pacific Theater of Operations and was discharged in 1946.
Mr. Chatot was an active and dedicated participant for many years in the Barre area business, community, political and service sectors, having been a member of: the Barre Granite Association of which he had been a Director and Chairman of numerous working committees: a member of the North American Monument builders Association; member and past Director of the Vermont chamber of Commerce; Chairman of the Barre Housing Authority for 18 years and a Democratic Party activist at the City, County, State and National levels. Mr. Chatot had been both a delegate and alternate to several national conventions; appointed by former Governor Philip Hoff to the State Board of Forest and Parks where he served for many years; Bare Justice of the Peace for 27 years; Bare Rotary Club since 1958. He served as Rotary Club President in 1965-66 and was District Governor in 1980-81. He was also a Paul Harris Fellow. He belonged to the Central Vermont Hospital 200 Club, of which he was a founding member and had served a term as President. Following his retirement, Mr. Chatot had spent several years as a volunteer at the hospital.
Other memberships include St. Monica¡¦s Church; 4th Degree Knight, Bishop Brady Council K of C; Barre Canadian Club; Mutuo, Inc., St. Andrew¡¦s Society of Burlington; Granite Masonic Lodge #35; Barre Council #22 R and SM; Granite Chapter #26 RAM; St. Aldemar Commandery #11 K.T., all of Barre; and Mt. Sinai Shrine Temple #3 of Montpelier, VT.
Mr. Chatot was a skilled amateur photographer, an accomplished skier belonging to the 70+ Club of Vermont; and an avid painter, belonging to the Barre Palateers. He enjoyed golfing, and was a Past President of the Barre Country Club; and a gentleman farmer who liked to mow is fields with his Massey Ferguson tractor.
He spent many summers with his family at his cottage on Joe¡¦s Pond. He was a Past President of the Joe¡¦s Pond Association and served on numerous Association committees.
On October 30, 1936 he married Elizabeth Perreault in St. Monica¡¦s Church. She died in 1949.
On November 25, 1950 he married Mary Allison Simpson in St. Monica¡¦s Church. They worked very closely together in his various civic, business, political and fraternal affairs until her death December 30, 1992.
Mr. Chatot moved to Lincoln House in October of 2000 where he lived in recently when he moved to Joe¡¦s Pond and the home of special friends and caregivers Ray and Evelyn Richer.
Survivors include: his three daughters; Judee Chatot-Travis and his son in law James Travis both of Barre town; Susan Bouchard and her husband Butch of Tewksbury, Massachusetts; Darlene Fafard and her husband Larry, of Morrisville, Vt.: one son Jules Chatot and his wife Kate of Cabot, Vermont: two granddaughters; Jane Marie Chatot and Mary Fafard; three grandsons; Matthew Travis, Daniel Travis and Jules Chatot; two sisters, Marie Bottigi of Woodridge Nursing Home, Berlin and Francese Chatot of Portland, Oregon: two brothers; Emile Chatot of Barre and Paul Chatot also at Woodridge Nursing Home, Berlin; several nieces and nephews.
A Mass of the Christian Burial will be celebrated in St. Monica¡¦s Church, Barre on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at the Hope Cemetery in Barre.

BARRE TOWN - A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday June 14, 2003 at 10 a.m. in St. Monica Church in Barre for Raymond A. Charbonneau, Jr. of 5 Owen drive who passed away on June 9, 2003 at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, Vt.
The Rev. Peter Routhier, Pastor of the Church, was the celebrant, assisted by Deacon Daniel White.
Crucifer was William Shannon.
Organist, Angeline Ennis, accompanied singers, Rita Laperle, Romeo Bilodeau and Daniel Lemieux in the hymns, 'For The Beauty Of The Earth,' 'I Know That My Redeemer Lives,' 'Amazing Grace,' 'Peace' and 'America The Beautiful.'
The Gospel was ready by Deacon White.
The Old Testament reading was given by son, Raymond Charbonneau III and Katie Lynn Charbonneau, a granddaughter, read from the New Testament.
Offertory gifts were presented at the altar by Katie Lynn Charbonneau and Angela Hutchinson, both granddaughters.
Words of remembrance were given by son, James Charbonneau.
Active bearers were, Raymond Charbonneau III, Kenneth Charbonneau, James Charbonneau, all sons; Michael Beaudin, son-in-law; Joseph R. Charbonneau, brother; and Thomas Stone a nephew.
A Prayer Service was held Thursday evening at the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home and was led by Father Routhier and Deacon White.
Burial was in St. Sylvester Cemetery in Lower Websterville, Vt., where Father Routhier offered Committal Prayers.
Following the burial a fellowship luncheon was held at the family home on Owen Drive.
Services were in the care of the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre, Vt.

BARRE - Funeral services for Sylvia A. Spencer, who died June 8, 2003, were held Thursday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Berlin.
Brother James Walton presided over and conducted the service.
Jared Dangerfield, Elder, offered the opening prayer and Matt Christiansen, Elder, led the closing prayer.
Brother Clinton Bedell Sr. delivered the eulogy.
Cameron Campbell, son, and members of the congregation offered words of remembrance.
The Aaronic and Melchizedek priesthood holders of the Montpelier Ward were honorary bearers.
Cameron, Clint L. and Scott Campbell, all sons, Clint W. and Anthony Campbell, both grandsons, and Steven Spencer, stepson, were active bearers.
Burial was at the Village Cemetery in Williamstown, where Brother Walter Peatman Jr. dedicated the grave.
Fellowship and luncheon followed at the church.
Marion Touchette
WATERBURY/STOWE - Marion 'Wiltshire' Touchette, age 83, passed away at her residence in Water-bury, Vermont on Saturday, June 14, 2003. She was born on August 31, 1919, in Morris-ville the daughter of Charles and Marjorie 'Brown' Wiltshire.
Marion grew up in Morrisville where she attended public school. She married Joseph Touchette on August 7, 1938, in Morrisville and later moved to Stowe and then Nebraska Valley in Moscow where she lived for over 40 years. Through her life Marion was employed by Adam¡¦s Mill, Handle¡¦s Mill and Trapp Family Lodge. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary #64 of Stowe, and a 30-year member of the Ladies Auxiliary VFW #9653 of Morrisville. Among her many interests were circle word puzzles, crocheting, country music, T.V. game shows, card games at family events and especially bingo night! She also greatly enjoyed the company of her neighbors at the Wells House Apartments in Waterbury where she made her home in 1998. She will be greatly missed by her children, family and friends.
Marion is survived by her two daughters; Annette and her husband Richard White of Waterbury Center, VT, Joanne and her husband Erwin Carr of South Walden, VT, and two sons; Donald J. Touchette and his wife Sandra of Williamstown, VT, and Larry Touchette of Stowe, VT; 13 Grandchildren, 18 Great Grandchildren, 3 Great-Great Grandchildren, her sister Lorraine Touchette of Stowe, and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brothers; Zelmer and Henry, her sisters; Hilda and Lois, and her beloved husband Joseph who passed away in 1990.
Visiting Hours will be held at the Stafford funeral Home in Stowe today from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A funeral service will be held at the Stowe Community Church at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday June 17th followed by interment

BARRE - The Committal Service was held Friday at 2:00 p.m. at the family mausoleum in Hope Cemetery, for Anita V. Vanetti, of Abbott Avenue, who died June 9, 2003 at her home.
The Rev. Herman Benjamin, pastor of the Hedding United Methodist Church, officiated. Her caregiver, Marlene Batchelder, offered a special prayer.

Betty Cross Kolb
NORTHFIELD, VT/ALLENDALE, NJ – Betty Cross Kolb, age 76, formerly of Allendale, New Jersey died Tuesday May 20, 2003 from complications brought on by Alzheimer’s disease. A loving wife and mother, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Albert J. Kolb, during the summer of 2002. Together, Betty and Al raised six children and demonstrated true love and devotion through 54 years of marriage. Born and raised in Northfield Falls, Vermont, Betty was the youngest of four children of Robert and Loretta Cross. Betty graduated from Northfield HS in 1944 and later completed her formal education at Bryant and Stratton Business Institute in Boston, MA. While her children were young, Betty played active roles as a Girl Scout leader and in the school’s Parent Teacher Organization. In later life, Betty served for 22 years as an assistant librarian at the Allendale Public Library. In addition to her duties at the library, she served as a member of the Allendale Board of Public Health. Betty’s hobbies and interests included her rose garden and flowerbeds, antique glass and collectibles, travel to Florida and Arizona, reading, long walks, and of course cooking and baking. Surviving Betty are her sister Mildred Edson Nadeau, Dunnellon, FL and six children Darrylin Smith of Greensboro, NC, Albert Kolb Jr. of Fairfield, CT, Richard Kolb of Woodstock, VT, Phillip Kolb of Kennett Square, PA, Gerald Kolb of Frederick, MD, and Peter Kolb of Flagstaff, AZ. Betty is also survived by 14 grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Support Network, 600 Tamiami Trail N., Suite 21, Naples, FL 34105.
Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, May 25 at 1:30 p.m. at the Kingston Funeral Home, 35 Slate Avenue in Northfield. There are no calling hours. A reception will follow the service at 3 p.m. at the Northfield Inn on 228 Highland Avenue in Northfield.
Perley Smith Jr.
BRADFORD – Perley E. “Bill” Smith Jr., 71, of Bradford, died May 19, 2003, at the Veterans Administration Hospital in White River Junction, after a long illness.
He was born July 26, 1931, in Enfield, N.H., the son of Perley E. Sr. and Iva A. (Royce) Smith.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Army’s 82nd Airborn, 103rd Division during World War II.
Following his discharge he worked as a truck and taxi driver. He later moved to Bradford, where he worked at Bradford Veneer and Panel Co. and Benjamin’s Garage. He also worked recycling metal until a stroke forced his retirement.
Survivors include two daughters, Helen Laplaca of Lebanon, N.H. and Mary Cheney of Hill, N.H.; a son Perley E. Smith III of West Topsham; adopted children, Curtis Smith of Hartland and Stephanie Smith of Newbury; a brother Wendall Smith and a sister Shirley Oldenburg, both of Daytona Beach, Fla. and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His wife, a brother Malcolm Smith and a sister Madeline Kilton are deceased.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on May 31, 2003 at the West Farm Cemetery in West Canaan, N.H.

Evelyn Cady
HARDWICK – Evelyn Cady, 84, of Hardwick, died May 20, 2003, at the Greensboro Nursing Home, after suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.
She was born Aug. 14, 1918, in Meredith, N.H., the daughter of Thomas V. and Ella (Mossey) Smith.
She attended schools in St. Johnsbury and Hardwick. She graduated from Hardwick Academy in 1936, where she had played basketball.
She married Cecil E. Williams in August 1936 in Hardwick. They later divorced. She married Renphew A. Cady. He died in 1969.
Mrs. Cady worked as a cook at several local restaurants and later worked for the Area Agency on Aging. She raised her three youngest children as a single parent.
She was a member of St. Norbert Catholic Church in Hardwick.
Survivors include two sons, Stanley Williams of Jamaica and Kevin Cady of Hardwick; four daughters, Carol Fowler of Cambridge, Sylvia Thomas of Easton, Md., Jacqueline Walbridge of Williamston, S.C., and Linda Davidson of Easton, Md.; a brother Thomas V. Smith Jr. of Richmond, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; 1 step-granddaughter; 6 great-grandchildren and one step-great-grandson.
Her companion Walter Smith is deceased. A grandson died in 1983.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at noon Friday at St. Norbert Catholic Church in Hardwick. The Rev. Michael Augustinowitz will officiate.
Burial will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Hardwick.

Helen Chase
RANDOLPH – Helen T. Chase, 86, of Randolph, died May 19, 2003, at Mayo Healthcare in Northfield.
She was born March 16, 1917, in Keene, N.H., the daughter of Fordyce and Edna (Winchester) Thomas.
She attended schools in Keene and received a bachelor of education degree at Keene Teachers College in 1939, where she played basketball and field hockey.
She married Henry G. Chase Aug. 21, 1940, in Keene. He died in 1985.
Mrs. Chase taught high school English in Hancock, N.H. and Bethel, Vt. She had worked as a substitute teacher and taught Adult Basic Education in Randolph and was librarian at Whitcomb High School in Bethel. She also assisted her husband in his business the Curtis Agency, selling real estate and insurance and taught self-help courses through the American Arthritis Association at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.
She was active in coaching student theatrical productions at Randolph school and Vermont Technical College. She had written her own play, “The Singing School,” which was among those performed with the group that became the Randolph Players.
She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and founder of the local Rainbow Girls, and a member and certified lay reader at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Randolph.
She was an avid Celtics fan and stockholder.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Miller of Clifton, Va., and Nancy Craig of Dover, N.H.; a son Thomas H. Case of Henniker, N.H.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A sister Gertrude Thomas is deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Randolph. The Rev. Timothy Eberhardt will officiate.
Burial will follow at 3 p.m. Friday at the Depot Hill Cemetery in Henniker, N.H.
Friends may call from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the Day Funeral Home, where an Eastern Star service will be offered at 8 p.m.

Irene Drew
LYME, N.H. – Irene B. Drew, 90, died May 19, 2003, at Grafton County Nursing Home in North Haverhill, where she had resided since 2000.
She was born Feb. 7, 1913, in Claremont, the daughter of Henry and Emily (Field) Blake.
She attended schools in Claremont.
She married Leslie P. Drew Sept. 15, 1932. They lived in Claremont until 1936 when they moved to Lyme. He died in 1965.
Mrs. Drew raised six children while helping on the family farm and working as a housekeeper for local families.
She enjoyed cooking for large family gatherings, gardening, bowling, fishing, dancing, listening to the Lyme Town Band, visiting the Senior Centers in Lyme, Orford and Lebanon and playing with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include four daughters, Dorothy Stearns of Fairlee, Vt., Barbara Blanchard of Lebanon, Carol Phelps of West Topsham, Vt., and Emily Orf of Quechee, Vt.; two sons, William Drew of East Falmouth, Mass. and Richard Drew of Lyme; 20 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Five brothers, Edmund, Gordon, Henry, Harold and Arthur Blake and four sisters, Josephine Benware, Elsie Hinkle, Viola Moore and Lillian Durant, are deceased.
Graveside funeral services will be held at a later date to be announced.

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Graveside committal services for Wade E. Eaton, 25, of Schenectady, who died Feb. 1, 2003, will be held at noon Saturday at the West Bradford Cemetery in Bradford, Vt.
He was born in Hudson, N.Y., the son of James and Patti-Jo Wright.
Mr. Eaton worked as a tow truck operator at Bobar’s Towing of Schenectady.
