James D. Farnham Rites
LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The funeral service for James D. Farnham, a Barre native who died July 7, 2004, was held Saturday. The Rev. Craig Thompson, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Barre, officiated. Burial was held in St. Sylvester Cemetery in Barre Town.
Several members of the congregation offered words of remembrance.
The Barre American Legion members furnished the color guard. Taps was played and the flag was presented to his wife, Doris Farnham, by a close friend and past commander Larry Johnson.
A time of fellowship and a luncheon followed in the Barre Canadian Club.
Margaret M. Goble
NORTHFIELD - Margaret M. Goble, 92, of Tenney Road, died Thursday, July 29, 2004 at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin were she was a resident for 4 1/2 years.
She was born December 20, 1912 in New York City, daughter of Ludwig and Julia (Meyer) Broeg. She attended high school in Newark, NJ. On June 28, 1936 she married Harold William Goble in Irvington, NJ. Following their marriage, they lived in Irvington, Demerest and New Milford, NJ. He died May 20, 1965. More recently she had resided in Northfield with her son, Gary Goble. She had worked as a supervisor for RCA Corp and later owned and operated a Dairy Queen in Hillside, NJ.
She enjoyed crocheting, gardening and playing bingo. She was a member of St. John's Roman Catholic Parish in Northfield.
Survivors include; two sons, Gary Goble of Northfield (with whom she made her home) and Harold Goble of Ridgefield Park, NJ; a daughter, Elaine Lussier, of Berlin; a granddaughter, Suzanne Lefleche, of Williamstown; a great granddaughter, Deana Abbie Lafleche and a great grandson, Dean Allen Marquis Jr.
She was preceded in death by her grandson, Dean Allen Marquis Sr.; a brother, Louis Broeg, and a sister, Mildred Molinari.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 4, 2004 in the Mary Rest Cemetery, Mahwah, NJ. There are no calling hours. Gladys M. Goodine Rites
MARSHFIELD - A Service of Remembrance was held Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre for Gladys M. Goodine, 93, a former Marshfield resident, who died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, in the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center.
The Rev. Ronald Baker, grandson and pastor of the First Baptist Church in Mansfield, CT, officiated.
The pre-recorded hymns, "How Great Thou Art", "In The Garden", and "The Old Rugged Cross" were played.
Patricia Baker, granddaughter, read an original poem and words of remembrance were offered by grandchildren, Linda Krieger, Donna Lahr, Julie LeBeau, and James Goodine and nephew, Bernard Chenette Jr.
Internment preceded the service in the Pinehurst Cemetery in South Ryegate with Rev. Baker offering committal prayers.
Elizabeth L. "Betty" Hudson Rites
EAST MONTPELIER - The funeral service for Elizabeth L. "Betty" Hudson, who died July 26, was held Thursday at the Old Meeting House in East Montpelier Center. The Rev. David Connor, associate pastor of the church, officiated. Burial was at Doty Cemetery.
Words of remembrance were offered by son-in-law, William Pollock; a niece, Marcie Vickers; and several members of the Congregation.
Bearers were her grandsons, Christopher, Eric and Alexander Pollock, Ramon Hudson, Kevin Hudson and Jeffrey Guilmette, as well as friends, Will Hull and Spencer Price.
A time of fellowship and a luncheon followed in the Parish House.
James J. LaRose Rites
WEBSTERVILLE - A Mass of Christian Burial for John J. LaRose, who died July 17, was held Saturday in St. Monica Catholic Church. The Rev. Peter Routhier, pastor of the church, officiated, assisted by seminarian James Zuccaro. Burial was in St. Sylvester Cemetery in lower Websterville.
William Shannon was crucifer. Zuccaro lead the Prayer of the Faithful. Organist Angeline Ennis accompanied Rita Laperle and Romeo Bilodeau in hymns.
Cindy Barney, a niece, read from the Old Testament. Crystal Emerson, also a niece, read from the New Testament.
Active bearers were Leandro Perojo III, Larry Perojo, Carl Thompson and Stanely Lanphear, all brothers-in-law; and nephews Michael Hebert and Kenneth Hebert Jr.
A prayer service was held Friday evening. A fellowship luncheon following the burial was at North Barre Manor.
James P. Murphy Rites
BARRE - A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Friday at 2 p.m. in St. Monica's Catholic Church in Barre for James P. Murphy, 94, a former East Montpelier and Barre Lincoln House resident, who died Wednesday, July 28, 2004, in the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin. The Rev. Henry Furman, a former parochial vicar, was the celebrant.
Organist, Angeline Ennis accompanied soloist, Rosemary Badeau in the hymns, "Here I Am Lord", "Prayer of St. Francis", "On Eagle's Wings", and "How Great Thou Art".
Words of Remembrance were offered by daughter, Janet Dion. The Old Testament reading was given by granddaughter, Mary Beth Carey. Granddaughter, Marcia A. Dion gave the Responsorial Psalm and granddaughter, Karen Moore read scriptures from the New Testament. Offertory gifts were presented at the altar by great-grandchildren, Megan, Christopher, and Michael Dion, Dylan and Amanda Dion, Ian and Taylor Carey, Michela Smith, and Aaron and Emily Doherty.
Internment followed in St. Sylvester Cemetery in Websterville with Rev. Furman offering committal prayers. Bearers were grandsons, Carey Bessette, Mark Dion, Michael Dion, Matt Dion, Reginald LaPerle, Philip James LaPerle, and David Murphy.
Military Rites were accorded the deceased by members of the American Legion Post 10 of Barre. The folding of the flag was by Roland Fournier and Harvey Carroll and presented to Robert Murphy, son of the deceased, by Past Commander Larry Johnson. Bugler, Karen Safford played "Taps".
Following the committal, family and friends gathered at the Hilltop Restaurant on Quarry Hill for a time of fellowship and refreshments.

Julienne Bernadette (Washburn) Neely
ALBURG SPRINGS - Julienne Bernadette Washburn Neely, 93, of Alburg Springs and more recently of Ravenswood, W. Va., died July 30, 2004.
She was born in Williston, daughter of Frank and Lea (Boutin) Senna.
She attended schools in Williston.
She was married to Clarence Washburn. He died in 1983. She married Kenneth E. Neely. He died in 1990.
She and husband Clarence Washburn owned and operated Washburn's Store in Alburg Springs for 38 years.
She was a member of Saint Amadeus Roman Catholic Parish and the Council of Catholic Women.
Survivors include a son, James C. Washburn of Ravenswood, W. Va.; three daughters, Virginia Washburn of Graniteville, Nancy Barber of Milton and Susan Bessette; a stepdaughter, Carol Henry of Pennsylvania; five half-sisters, Leah of St. George, Doris and Janice of Hinesburg, Dorothy of Connecticut and Janet of South Burlington; one half-brother, Peter of Williston; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two brothers, Dolor and Clement, and one half-sister Theresa.
Friends may call on Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. at the Kidder Memorial Home, 89 Grand Avenue, Swanton.
The Liturgy of Christian Burial will be Wednesday at 11:15 a.m. at Saint Anne's Shrine in Isle La Motte.
Interment
will follow in the Washburn family lot in Saint Amadeus Cemetery.

Stanford White Jr. Rites
BARRE - A funeral for Stanford White Jr. of Camp Street, who died July 24, 2004, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., was held Wednesday, July 28, 2004, at 10 a.m. in the Barre Congregational Church.
The Rev. David Vanderlinde-Abernathy, pastor of the church, officiated. Organist Eric Giles accompanied the congregation in the Hymns, "Morning Has Broken" and "How Great Thou Art". He also accompanied soloist, Paula Young, in the anthem "Rock of Ages" and "The Lords Prayer". Lori Gola read the poem, "Put Your Hands in Mine". Words of remembrance were offered by her daughter, Pamela White, and sons, Stuart, Brian and Marshall White. The bearers were a grandson, Jared White, and friends, Kenneth Mason, Gus Gola, Daniel LaJeunesse, Dana Goodnow and Lee Rousseau. Burial was made in the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center. The Flag was presented to his wife Marilyn White by Bruce W. Judd.

Mark Anthony Washburn
SWANTON - Mark Anthony Washburn, 46, of Swanton, and formerly of Craftsbury, died suddenly July 30, 2004, at his home.
He was born March 30, 1958, son of Anthony P. Washburn and Doreen Demeritt Horton.
He graduated in 1976 from Craftsbury Academy.
He married Toni Lynn Scarsfava in Newburgh, N.Y., in 1984. They divorced and Mr. Washburn returned to Vermont. He married Rebecca Ryan in 1993.
He was a drummer for New York City bands the Horse Opra, City Mountain Band, Vintage Rock and more.
In Vermont, he worked at A.W. Hastings, a subsidiary of Marvin Windows, for many years. When that company left the state, he worked at Federal Express until he was injured at work in 1996.
Survivors include his mother of Waterbury Center; his father of Morrisville; a half-sister, Michelle Foster of California; a grandfather, Newton E. Washburn of Bethlehem, N.H.; a grandmother, Alice Bettis of Phoenix, Ariz.; aunts; uncles; and cousins.
Friends may call Monday from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Malcolm R. Davis Funeral Home in Craftsbury Common.
The funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. at the United Church of Craftsbury in Craftsbury Common.
Interment
will follow in Branch Cemetery in Craftsbury.

Shirley C. Hayden
HARDWICK - Shirley C. Hayden, 70, of Hardwick died Thursday, July 29, 2004, in Morrisville.
She was born Sept. 2, 1933, in Glens Falls, N.Y., daughter of Earle Glenn and Esther (Roger) Curtis.
She was a resident of Hardwick for more than 34 years. She was a supervisor for Lamoille County Mental Health in Morrisville for more than 20 years. She was also associated with AWARE of Hardwick and its various programs for many years. She was named Vermont Woman of the Year in the mid-1980s as a result of her work with these two organizations.
She enjoyed reading, vacations on the Maine coast, dining out, spending time with her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include sons, Greg Curtis of South Hero, Scott Hayden of Montpelier and Bruce Hayden of Marshfield; a daughter, Lyndy Hayden of Hardwick; a brother, Earle Walter Curtis of Cabot; sisters, Jean Marie Curtis and Glennlyn Wolf, both of Lima, Pa., and Ester Nakote Hayward of Marshfield.

MIDDLESEX - Committal services for Elizabeth A. Jangraw, who died July 21, 2004, were held July 27, 2004, at Middlesex Center Cemetery.

Bernice M. McDonald
DUXBURY - Bernice M. McDonald, 90, a longtime resident of Duxbury, passed away peacefully at the Berlin Health and Rehabilitation Center on Thursday, July 29, 2004. Born in Duxbury on October 10, 1913, she was the daughter of the late James and Mabel (Collins) Welch. Bernice married Ralph Allen in 1935 who predeceased her in 1936. In 1940, Bernice married George A. McDonald who predeceased her in 1976.
Bernice was a graduate of Waterbury High School in 1932 and continued her education at the School of Cosmetology in Montpelier, graduating in 1933. For several years, Bernice worked as a hairdresser in Montpelier and Moretown. She later was employed as supervisor of the Sewing Room at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury for over 20 years. She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury. In her leisure time, Bernice enjoyed sewing, cooking and traveling.
She is survived by a daughter, Rhoda Allen Wimble and her husband, Robert of Moretown; a stepson, Bruce Allen of St. Albans; two grandchildren, Pat Notarnicola of Trumbull, Conn., and Lisa Ravey of Pompano Beach, Fla.; a great-granddaughter, Eryca Lopez of Pompano Beach, Fla.; her sister, Mayville Gonyaw of Greensboro Bend; her brother, Carl Welch of Haverhill N.H.; as well as many nieces and nephews.

James "Jimbo" Bryant WARREN - James R. "Jimbo" Bryant, 22, of German Flats Road, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Fletcher Allen Health Care Center in Burlington.
He was born September 10, 1981, in Landstuhl, Germany, son of James R. and Denise (Daly) Bryant. He was a 1999 graduate of Spaulding High School in Barre. James was a finish carpenter, working in the Central Vermont area. "Jimbo" enjoyed hiking, snow boarding and being outdoors. He was a member of St. Monica Parish.
Survivors include his mother and stepfather, Denise and Edward Ferrari Jr. of Barre; his sister, Jenny Bryant Donahue, and her husband, Jeffrey Donahue and their children, Madison, Isaak and Marshall, all of Williamstown; paternal grandparents, Edward and Suzanne Ferrari Sr. of Barre; a special aunt, Virginia Daly of Lowell, Mass; three special cousins, Michael, Michelle and Erin of Concord, Mass.; other uncles, aunts and cousins. His father predeceased him.

Rose Marie Chessman
WORCESTER - Rose Marie Chessman, 39, of Elmore Road in Worcester died Saturday, July 24, 2004.
She was born on December 23, 1964, in Reno, Nevada, the daughter of Frank Nelson and Soo Boon (Kim) Chessman of Concord, N.H. Rose is the mother of Flora-sae Kim Chessman-Chaplin, and partner of Daniel A. Chaplin, both of Worcester, Vt.
Rose made a decision to be baptized at the age of six in Fort Walton Beach, Fla., and re-affirmed her faith in 1984. She was a 1982 graduate of Groveton High School, N.H., and attended Berkeley School of Music in Boston. Rose was a lifelong artist, graduating Goddard College in 1996 with a bachelor of arts degree. A member of the American Massage Therapy Association, Rose had a practice that specialized in pre- and post-natal massage in Montpelier and North Central Vermont, taught yoga with the elderly at, among other places, the Montpelier Senior Center, and most recently worked as an administrative assistant for the Vermont Trial Lawyers Association. Besides her parents, daughter, and partner, she is survived by her sister, Gloria J. Schaefer (of Honolulu, Hawaii), and brothers John D. Chessman (of Guildhall, Vt.), Philip N. Chessman (of Concord, N.H.), and Daniel J. Chessman (of Clarksville, Tenn.).
An open memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 31, 2004, at 12:30 p.m. at the Doty School playground in Worcester Village on the Calais Road. Richard (Bud) Lanphear
BARRE - Richard Albert (Bud) Lanphear, 80, of Barre died Tuesday, July 27, 2004, at the Berlin Health & Rehabilitation Center.
He was born Nov. 7, 1923, in Craftsbury, son of Albert and Elsie (Sheltra) Lanphear. He attended Craftsbury, Lowell and Walden public schools.
He was first married to Doris Colbeth. He later married Evangeline Phyllis Robar in Barre on August 25, 1970. Mr. Lanphear worked as a farmer in the Batten and Gebbie potato fields, and was a trucker for 35 years for several companies including P.N.E. Trucking in Pittsburgh, Pa., and Williams Trucking and Bellavance Trucking, both in Barre. He retired in 1999.
He enjoyed spending time with his good friend, Catherine Harris, gardening, chopping wood, watching television and completing puzzles.
Survivors include a son, Gary Lanphear of South Greensburg, Pa.; daughters, Sandra Shortridge of Ellington, Conn., and Bonnie Mercier of Hardwick; stepsons, Kenneth Cole of Barre, and Ralph Cole of Jane Lu, Va.; brothers, Alfred Lanphear of Hardwick and Dale Lanphear of North Carolina; sisters, Frances Cochran of Walden, Sybil Ainsworth of Hardwick, and Ruth Lamell, Gloria Godfrey, Dorothy Spaulding, Verlie Tillotson and Marion Houghton, all of Morrisville, and Jeanette Neis of North Feeding Hills, Mass.; 18 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by his wife, Doris Lanphear; his wife, Evangeline in 2000; a daughter, Sharon Lanphear; and a brother, Wayne Lanphear.

Mayford S. Lyon
RANDOLPH - Mayford S. Lyon, 85, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.
She was born Nov. 28, 1918, in Bethel, daughter of Edgar and Marjorie (Harrington) Stoddard. She attended schools in Bethel and Brandon, and graduated from high school. She later attended Vermont Technical School in Waterbury and New Hampshire Technical School in Manchester.
On Dec. 25, 1937, she married Ernest Lyon in Bethel. Mr. Lyon died in 1943.
Mrs. Lyon worked at Brooksie's Restaurant in Sharon for 10 years, and later as a food service manager at the Birchwood Nursing Home in Burlington and the Bedford Nursing Home in Bedford, N.H.
She was a member of The United Church of Randolph for over 50 years, Ideal Rebekah Lodge #70 of South Royalton, Trinity Phythiance Temple in Plaistow, N.H., and the West Randolph Grange #229.
Mrs. Lyon enjoyed reading, music, crocheting and writing poems and stories for publication in The Herald. Survivors include a daughter, Marjorie Heil of Bethel; sons, Everett Lyon of Royalton and Albert Lyon of Holland, Conn.; a sister, Lillian Olmstead of Rochester; a stepbrother, Wendell Purinton of North Clarendon; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased be her stepfather, Arland Purinton; a brother, Thurman Stoddard; sisters, Helen and Ruth Stoddard; and two grandsons.
Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Barbara R. Phelps
WOLCOTT - Barbara Ruth Phelps, 64, of Wolcott died unexpectedly Friday, July 23, 2004, at the Fletcher Allen Medical Center in Burlington.
She was born May 17, 1940, in Wolcott, daughter of Roger and Ruth (Houghton) Cleveland.
She graduated from People-s Academy in Morrisville in 1958. On June 15, 1964, she married Olin Kent Phelps in Hyde Park. After their marriage they moved to Wolcott, where she has since lived.
Mrs. Phelps was a chambermaid in Stowe, worked in the housekeeping department at the Waterbury State Hospital for several years and was a bookkeeper for 12 years for Phelps Trucking in Wolcott.
She enjoyed knitting, watching the game show network and watching the birds at her birdfeeder.
Survivors include daughters, Ronda Lang of Montpelier and Robin Flood of Wolcott; a brother, Bruce Cleveland of Barre; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was predeceased by her husband Olin in 1997, and a brother, Brian Cleveland in 1976.
To honor her requests, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday in the Taylor Cemetery in Wolcott, with the Pastor Judy Waible officiating.

Ernest (Joe) Pollender
BRADFORD - Ernest (Joe) Pollender, 85, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., following a stroke.
He was born June 17, 1919, in Greenville, Maine, son of Joseph and Lydia (Martin) Pollender.
Mr. Pollender grew up in the Richford area. In 1938 he moved to Bradford. He married Martha Sawyer in Bradford. Mrs. Bradford predeceased him in 1973.
For many years he was a logger at the Bradford Veneer & Panel Co. He was also a heavy equipment operator, worked at The Green Thumb in Jaffrey, N.H., and was an Orange County deputy sheriff from the mid-1950s to the late 1960s. In 1998 he married Kathleen Hudson Hill. They lived in Bradford, Woodsville, N.H., and Jaffrey, N.H., before moving back to Bradford seven years ago.
Survivors include his wife; children, Janice Larabee of Bradford, Bernard Pollender of Jaffrey, N.H., Carole Taylor of Bradford, Gary Pollender of Ludlow and Terry Wyman of Warren, N.H.; 17 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; several nieces, nephews and cousins; sisters, Gladys Lumbra of Franklin, Eloise Demar of Enosburg and Reba Ryea of Richford; and a brother, Wilfred Pollender of Richford.
He was predeceased by sisters, Louise Owens, Hilda Chaplin, Jessie Pollender, Ellarita Wetherby and Glendora Birch; brothers, Frederick and Freeman Pollender. Graveside funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Sawyer Cemetery in Bradford. There are no calling hours.

Cheryl Anne Robinson
WARREN - Cheryl Anne Robinson, 54, of Warren died Monday, July 26, 2004, at her home.
She was born July 2, 1950, in Randolph, daughter of Robert and Prudence (Manning) Shepard. She grew up in Rochester, where she also attended school.
On July 6, 1968, she married Robert Robinson in Rochester. She lived in Rochester until moving to Warren in 1975. She was a housekeeper at Sugarbush Village Association. She enjoyed knitting, bird feeding, flower gardening and reading.
Survivors include her husband, Robert Robinson Sr. of Warren; sons, Robert Robinson Jr., and Brian Robinson, both of Warren; a daughter, Brenda Briggs of Northfield Falls; brothers, Gerald and Richard Shephard of Rochester; sisters, Linda Shephard of Rochester and Helen Martin of Massachusetts; and four grandchildren.
She was predeceased by her brother, Larry, and her sister, Irene Ashley.

Ernest G. Denison Rites
SOUTH BARRE - A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Monday, July 26, 2004, at 10 a.m. in St. Monica・s Catholic Church in Barre for Ernest G. Denison of Cedar Apartments, who passed away on July 21, 2004, at the Berlin Health & Rehabilitation Center in Berlin, Vt. The con-celebrated Mass was said by the Rev. Peter Routhier, pastor of the church, assisted by the Rev. Henry P. Furman, parochial vicar of the Holy Cross Catholic Church of Morrisville; the Rev. Mr. Fernand Rivard, and the Rev. Mr. David Bisson, both deacons. Crucifer was Rion Elmer. Altar servers were Casey Elmer and Taylor Elmer. Deacon Rivard read the gospel and led the Prayer of the Faithful. Pianist Marielle Gosselin accompanied the Sancta Maria Church Choir in the hymns, 'I Know That My Redeemer Lives,' 'Precious Lord Take My Hand,' 'Surely The Presence,' 'On Eagle・s Wings' and 'Song of Farewell.' The Old and New Testament readings were given by Mary Beth Hebert. Offertory gifts were presented at the altar by Patricia Robinson, Paula Hennessey and Loreen Blow. Assisting as Eucharistic ministers were Father Furman, Deacon Rivard, Deacon Bisson and William Shannon. Bearers were Ernest Bancroft, Paul Hennessey, Victor Acebo and Andrew Moshinski. Burial was in Maple Hill Cemetery in Washington, Vt., where Father Routhier offered committal prayers. The American flag was presented to Winona Denison, wife of the deceased, by Paul J. Carbonneau. Following the burial a fellowship luncheon was held in the church dining room. Arrangements were in the care of the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre, Vt.
Joshua J. Douglass
EAST MONTPELIER - A service of remembrance for Joshua J. Douglass of Maplewood Drive, East Montpelier, who died July 16, 2004, was held July 21, 2004, at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home in Barre. The Rev. David Vanderlinde-Abernathy, pastor of the Barre Congregational Church, officiated the service. A time of fellowship followed at the home of his guardian, Henry Murry, in East Montpelier.. James Douglas Farnham LAS VEGAS, Nev. - James Douglas Farnham, 71, died Wednesday, July 7, 2004, in Las Vegas. James was born July 31, 1932, at his home at 158 S. Main St. in Barre, a son of Gilman and Elizabeth (Charron) Farnham. He was a 1953 graduate of Spaulding High School. Following high school, he joined the Vermont Army National Guard, was activated and deployed to Germany during the Korean Conflict with the 43rd Division. After his discharge, he moved to Connecticut and was employed by Pratt and Whitney in Hartford for 33 years. Upon retirement he moved to Las Vegas where he resided for 10 years. Jim enjoyed fishing out of Mystic, Conn., horse racing at Saratoga, N.Y., and the Las Vegas Sports Book. He also enjoyed working his prize-winning garden and entertaining family and friends at his home in Las Vegas. Jim was an avid fan of the men and women・s 'Huskies' basketball teams of the University of Connecticut. Jim was a lifetime member of the Barre American Legion Post #10. Survivors include his wife, Doris (McPherson) Lagasse-Farnham of Las Vegas; three stepsons, Donald Lagasse of Washington, D.C., Rodney Lagasse of Hebron, Conn., and Scott Lagasse of Charlestown, N.H.; a stepdaughter, Mary Ann Bateman of Claremont, N.H.; a sister, Patricia Dwinell of Peru, N.Y.; four brothers and their wives, Gilman and Rose Farnham of Las Vegas, Robert and Denise Farnham of Los Angeles, Denis and Ruth Farnham of East Montpelier and Travis and Effie Farnham of East Randolph; several stepgrandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Shane and James Farnham; and his brother-in-law, Roger Dwinell. Jim was very much loved and will be greatly missed by his many friends and family. A memorial service will be held at noon Saturday, July 31, 2004, at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St. in Barre. Burial will follow at St. Sylvester・s Cemetery in Barre Town. Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday, July 30. Elizabeth Hudson
EAST MONTPELIER - Elizabeth L. Hudson, 81, of Center Road, East Montpelier, died Monday, July 25, 2004, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin. She was born July 19, 1923, in Montpelier, daughter of Raymond and Ada (Wheeler) Coppins. She graduated from Montpelier High School in 1938. On May 3, 1942, she married Edward Hudson in Montpelier. They lived in East Montpelier following their marriage. Mr. Hudson died in 1971. She worked for the Vermont Department of Probation and Parole in Montpelier, as a legal secretary for several Montpelier attorneys and then became the journal secretary for the Vermont State Senate for over 25 years. Mrs. Hudson enjoyed playing bridge, canning, cooking, sewing, braiding rugs and going to her family camp on Peacham Pond. She belonged to the Old Meeting House and the Peacham Pond Association. Survivors include daughters, JoAnn Guilmette and Pamela Pollock of East Montpelier; sons, Gary and Timothy Hudson of East Montpelier; 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; and a brother, Percy Coppins of Berlin. She was predeceased by a daughter, Judith Benedini, and sisters, Beverly Schaefer and Irma Smith. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Old Meeting House in East Montpelier Center. Burial will follow in the Doty Cemetery in East Montpelier Center. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home in Barre. Marie E. Laffan
PITTSFIELD - Marie E. Laffan, 90, of Pittsfield, died Saturday, July 24, 2004, at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph. She was born Feb. 8, 1914, in Rochester, daughter of Allen and Dora (Foy) Darrah. She grew up in Rochester, and married Kieran Laffan on Nov. 20, 1937, in Rochester. Mrs. Laffan attended a beautician school in Nyack, N.Y., where she lived for two years. She moved back to Vermont and operated Marie・s Beauty Shop in her home. She lived in Bethel and Rochester, and spent the last 50 years in Pittsfield. She enjoyed fishing, knitting, travel and camping. She was on the board of directors of the Quin Town Senior Center in Hancock. Survivors include daughters, Jane E. Turner of Bethel and Margaret 'Peg' Davis of North Clarenden; a brother, Ralph Darrah of Rochester; sisters, Anna Darrah of Rutland, Mass., and Alice Williams of Randolph Center; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. She was predeceased by her husband, Kieran in 1978; a daughter, Mary Estabrook; and brothers, Frank, Arthur, Robert, Steve and Richard Darrah. Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 28 at the Pittsfield Village Cemetery, with Pastor Ron Sherwin officiating. There are no calling hours. MONTPELIER - A service celebrating the life of Ryland E. Partridge, 84, of Main Street, Montpelier, who died July 23, 2004, was held Sunday, July 25, 2004, in the Trinity United Methodist Church in Montpelier. The Rev. V. Dorothy M. Williamson
RANDOLPH - Dorothy M. Williamson, 84, died Sunday, July 25, 2004, at Eden Park Nursing Home in Rutland, where she has lived for the past three years. She was born July 5, 1920, in Newport, N.H., daughter of Walter S. and Mary Rose (Baker) Manning. Dorothy attended schools in New Hampshire and Vermont. In 1940 she married Edwin Adams. She later married Elwin Williamson in Barnard in 1953. Mr. Williamson died in 1965. Mrs. Williamson worked at G.W. Plastics in Bethel for several years, and later worked as a nurse・s aid at Tranquility Nursing Home in Randolph for many years before retiring in 1987. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing cards and picking berries. Survivors include daughters, Linda Barcomb of Clarendon and Catherine Williamson of Randolph; a half-sister, Louise Marchaland of Seattle, Wash.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Memorial services will be held at a later date at St. John・s Episcopal Church in Randolph, with the Rev. Timothy Eberhardt officiating. Burial will be in the Ranney Cemetery in Stockbridge. Wayne C. Keyes
BRAINTREE - Wayne C. Keyes, 81, of Braintree died Wednesday, June 15, 2004, at his home.
He was born Dec. 5, 1922, in Brookfield, son of Perley and Alice (Kingsbury) Keyes.
He attended Brookfield schools and graduated from Spaulding High School in Barre. After high school he attended college in Denver, Colo.
Mr. Keyes served in the U.S. Army in the infantry during World War II.
On Oct. 31, 1948, he married Barbara Copeland in Randolph. She died in December 2000.
Following his military service, he was a mechanic for the Harold Flint Mobil Station in Randolph. Later he was a lineman for the Central Vermont Public Service Corporation for nine years, retiring as the line foreman.
He was a member of the Brookfield Masonic Lodge #9. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing horseshoes, cooking, gardening, snowmobiling, family outings, camping on Lake Champlain, watching the Boston Red Sox and Celtics and doing crossword puzzles. He also enjoyed his pets and his deer camp in Roxbury.
Survivors include sons, Barry, Terry and Robert Keyes, all of Braintree; sisters, Thelma Hill of Brookfield and Carolyn Liljedahl of West Hartford, Conn.; and 4 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 19, at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph, with the Rev. Ronald Rilling officiating. Calling hours will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in the Brookfield Center Cemetery.
