Mildred E. Hutchins
SOUTH BARRE - Funeral Services for Mildred E. Hutchins, of the Middle Road, who died Sept. 21, 2003, at her home were held Thursday at 11:00 AM in the Barre Congregational Church.
The Rev. David Vanderlinde-Abernathy, pastor of the church officiated. Grandson William Gadol read from Scripture and grandson Kevin Hoskins offered Words of Remembrance.
Organist Eric Giles accompanied the Congregation in the hymns "How Great Thou Art" and "Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee." He also accompanied soloist Gail Kilkelly in the hymns "The Rose" and "Amazing Grace" on the piano.
The bearers were grandchildren William and Heather Gadol, Kevin and Lori Hoskins, and Jodi and Randall Roy. Burial was made in the Wilson Cemetery in Barre Town.
Fellowship and luncheon followed in the church dining room.
The Eastern Star Memorial Service was conducted Wednesday evening in The Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre, by Charity Chapter #57 OES of Williamstown.?

SOUTH ROYALTON - Albert Ernest Barcelow, 79, died Sept. 24, at the Dartmouth Hitchocok Medical Center in Lebanon, NH. Arrangements are pending at the Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea, Vt.
Leonard N. Thresher
RANDOLPH - Leonard N. Thresher, 78, died at his home Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003. He was born in Rochester, Vt. on November 25, 1924, the son of Leonard and Emma (French) Thresher. He was educated in Bethel and Randolph Schools.
He was a member of the Baptist Fellowship in Randolph and a past member of the Thetford Grange.
He farmed with his father, was a logger, drove trucks for Harold Rogers Trucking, worked at Fritzel Toys, Vermont Castings, was a self employed carpenter and for 15 years worked in the finishing department at Ethan Allen, retiring in 1978.
He enjoyed fishing, woodworking and yard work.
He married Helen Walton on July 2, 1955.
Survivors include his wife of Randolph, two step-daughters Diana J. Clubb of Idewild, MI, Alethea Clogston of Orford, NH; a brother, Leslie Thresher of Roxbury; two sisters Polly Chromb of New York, and Alice McIntyre of Brattleboro; 13 step-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a step-grandson and a step-daughter.
Funeral services will be held Sept. 27, 2003 at the Baptists Fellowship at 11 a.m. Calling hours will be at the Day Funeral Home on Sept. 26, 2003 from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Burial will be in the Fairview Cemetery in Bethel. Rev. Fernand E. Couture
SILVERTON, Texas — The Rev. Fernand E. Couture, 69, died Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2003, in Lubbock.
Mass will be at 3 p.m. Sunday in Our Lady of Loretto Catholic Church in Silverton, with Bishop John Yanta presiding.
The Legion of Mary in Amarillo will say the Rosary at 10:30 a.m. Monday in St. Laurence Cathedral in Amarillo. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. with Bishop Yanta as celebrant. Burial will be in the priest’s section of Llano Cemetery by Schooler Funeral Home of Amarillo, 4100 S. Georgia St.
Memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Sept. 19, in St. Monica’s Church in Barre, Vt.
The Rev. Couture was born Dec. 17, 1933, in Northfield, Vt. His death was the result of injuries sustained in a car wreck in Floyd County on Sept. 4.
He graduated from St. Michael’s High School in Montpelier, Vt. After high school and prior to becoming a priest, he owned and operated Douglas’s Barber Shop in Montpelier for several years. He then entered Catholic Seminary to study for the priesthood and was ordained a Servant of the Paracletes on March 14, 1970, in Rome, at the Basilica of St. Paul.
Throughout his 33 years as a priest the Rev. Couture served in several parishes and missions including Bolivia, Argentina, Barre, Montpelier, Alton, Ill., (as chaplain for the Catholic hospital), and Spearman, Dimmitt and Silverton, in the Catholic Diocese of Amarillo.
The Rev. Couture was a member of the Lions Club of Dimmitt. He was instrumental in the leadership of the Legion of Mary, and the Catholic Pro-Life movement in the West Texas area.
Subsequent to his ordination in Rome in 1970, the Rev. Couture continued his education with courses of study in church history, canon law and the ongoing study of foreign language. He was fluent in five languages.
His passion was the God he served and the people to whom he ministered. He was a strong advocate for the Perpetual Adoration of the Eucharist. He continued to be active daily in the ministry up to the time of his death.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and Bernadette (Fortier) Couture, formerly of Barre, and his siblings, Magella Couture, Gilles Couture, Jeannine Couture, Jacqueline (Couture) Provost and Diane Couture, all formerly of Barre.
Survivors include two brothers, Raymond Couture and wife, Catherine, and Laurent Couture and wife, Claire, all of Montpelier; a sister, Suzanne Willette and husband, Joseph, of Graniteville, Vt.; a nephew, Tom Couture of Lubbock; and several other nieces and nephews who currently reside in Vermont.
The family suggests memorials be to Our Lady of Loretta Catholic Church in Silverton.
Rev. Fernand E. Couture
BARRE - A memorial Mass was celebrated Friday in St. Monica Church in Barre for the Rev. Fernand E. Couture of Texas, who died Sept. 9, 2003.
The Mass was said by the Most Rev. Kenneth Angell, bishop of the diocese of Burlington. Concelebrants were the Rev. Paul Couture of St. Michael¡¦s College in Colchester, a cousin of the deceased, and the Rev. Wendell Searles, vicar general of Burlington.
The Old Testament reading was given by Suzanne Willette, a sister; Claire Couture, sister-in-law, read from the New Testament.
Words of remembrance were offered by the Rev. William Searles. Honor guards from the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus were Robert Menard, Phil Mollitor, William Robie, Raymond Moran, Michel Monty, Vinnie Ferland, Floyd Blodgett, Richard Luce and Albert Gagnon.
Electa L. MacDougall
NORTHFIELD - Electa L. MacDougall, 86, died Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003 at the Mayo Healthcare in Northfield. She was born in Braintree, on December 24, 1916, the daughter of Arthur C. & Lucy M. (Bean) Bass. She is a 1933 graduate of Randolph High School.
She married David H. MacDougall in Highland Manse in Berlin on October 9, 1935. They had lived in Brookfield, Randolph, Rutland, and South Barre, prior to moving to Northfield in 1951. Mr. MacDougall died October 11, 1981.
Mrs. MacDougall had worked for the Department of Employment and Training in Montpelier for fifteen years, retiring in 1982.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Northfield. She was an active member in her church, involved in community craft programs, the quilt show, and Northfield's Labor Day events.
Survivors include one son, David A. MacDougall and his wife Christine, of Northfield; three daughters, Deanna M. Maloney of W. Berlin, Marie MacDougall of Alpaus, New York, Carol L. MacDougall of Barre; one brother, Martin H. Bass of Barre; two sisters, Ruth Ruch and her husband Arnold, of Richford, and Linda Bradshaw of North Carolina; eight grandchildren, Tammy, Robin, Christopher, Susanne, Michael, Douglas, CaraLia and Greydie; ten great-grandchildren, Cortney, Brittany, Kasey, Ashley, Philip, Jonathan, Conner, Bryce, Liam, and Jonah; one great-great-grandchild, Kade; and many nieces and nephews. Her son, Raymond H. MacDougall died previously.
There are no public calling hours. A funeral service will be conducted Saturday, September 20 at 1 p.m. at the United Methodist Church of Northfield. Pamela J. Kluckner
FAYSTON - Pamela J. Kluckner, 54, loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and best friend passed away at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington, embraced by her family on Wednesday, September 17, 2003. Born in Nyack, N.Y. on December 27, 1948, she was the daughter of Robert Young and the late Grace (Taylor) Young. On November 27, 1971, she married Franz Kluckner in Valhalla, N.Y.
Pam was a graduate of West Lake High School in Mount Pleasant, N.Y. and continued her education at Vermont College where she received her degree as a medical laboratory technician. She later attended Bryn Mawr College and Champlain College for continuing education. Pam was employed at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin for several years before staying home to raise her young family and to assist her husband in the operation of Franz Kluckner Plumbing and Heating of Waitsfield. Well known in the Mad River Valley for her involvement in the area's activities, she was manager and later owner/operator of the Three Mountain Café in Waitsfield up until her death.
She was a member and secretary for the Mad River Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club and was a member of the Chamber of Commerce in the Valley. In her leisure time she enjoyed biking, snowmobiling, flower gardening, and most of all, being a mom and grandmother.
Pam is survived by her husband, Franz of Fayston; their children and grandchildren, Justina Boyden and her husband, Eric and their daughter, Sarah Elizabeth Boyden of Fayston; Stefan Kluckner, his son, Elijah James Kluckner of Waitsfield, and Elijah's mother, Jessica Harris of Fayston; her father and step-mother, Robert and Dorothy Young of Long Island, NY; two brothers, Robert E. Young of Darien, CT and James T. Young of Greenport, NY; as well as two nieces and a nephew.
A Funeral Mass will be celebrated from Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church in Waitsfield on Monday at 12 p.m. Private internment will take place in Bragg Hill Cemetery in Fayston. Don A. Garbati
MEMPHIS, Mo. - Don A. Garbati, 62, of Memphis, Mo. died Sept. 14, 2003, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, after a long battle with cancer. Don was born June 6, 1941, in Barre, the son of Anselmo (Sam) and Dorothy Pearl Garbati. Don attended grade school in Vermont and graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale, Ca. He married Brooke Johnson on April 21, 1988, in Las Vegas, Nev.
Don and Brooke owned and operated The Cheese Port in Downing, Mo. for ten years. Don then went to work for Barkers in Keosuaqua, Iowa until the time of his illness.
He especially enjoyed hunting and was very attached to his dogs. He was a member of the Lion's Club Den, Downing, Mo.
He is survived by his wife, Brooke Garbati, of Memphis, Mo.; two stepchildren, Rosemary Harris of Memphis, Mo., and CJ Brose of St. Joseph, Mo.; his mother, Dorothy Garbati of Las Vegas, Nev.; two sisters, Selma Marie Hickey of Las Vegas and Sylvia Ann McElreoth of Sweet Home, Ore.; two aunts, Esther Garbati and Evalina Sagris, both of Burlington; one uncle, Joseph Barquin of Montpelier; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his father, Anselmo (Sam) Garbati; three uncles, Guido Garbati, Secondo Garbati, and Harlan Gage, Jr; and two aunts, Aurora Barquin and Mildred Gage.

Irma J. Chafee
ALBANY, Vt. - Irma J. Chafee, 89, of Albany died Sept. 17, 2003 at North Country Hospital in Newport.
She was born Sept. 30, 1913 in Albany, the daughter of Clayton B. and Grace I. (Wells) Butler. She attended Albany schools. She married Lee Chafee on May 6, 1935. Mr. Chafee predeceased her on Dec. 25, 1973.
She was employed as a cook at Albany Village School, Cutler Academy in Craftsbury, as well as at Camp Ethan Allen.
Mrs. Chafee enjoyed spending time with her family and playing cards with her friends. She was a member of the Albany United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, the Maple Valley Grange, and the Albany Historical Society.
Surviving are Rodney Chaffee of Albany; Thomas Chaffee and his wife Roxene, of Albany; Sherman Chaffee and his wife Beverly, of Barre; Clair Chaffee and his wife Debra, of Albany; six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Albany United Methodist Church. Internment will follow in Albany Village Cemetery. Friends may call at the Davis Funeral Home in Craftsbury Common Friday evening, 7-9 p.m.

Amanda Menei
RANDOLPH - Amanda Menei, 19, died unexpectedly Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
She was born Dec. 4, 1983, in Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of Joseph and Patricia (Heinze) Menei. After her family moved to Tunbridge in 1995 she attended Tunbridge Central School, South Royalton High School in S. Royalton, and later, The Fold in Lyndonville.
She enjoyed playing basketball on the Tunbridge "Tigers" team and the South Royalton "Royals" High School Basketball team. She had worked at the North Tunbridge Store in North Tunbridge with her parents, who owned and operated the store for many years. Amanda lived this past year in Randolph.
She is survived by her parents; two sisters, Alycia and Abigail Menei, all of Springfield; her paternal grandparents, Gabriel and Gloria Menei of Philadelphia; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was predeceased by her maternal grandparents, William and Colletta Heinze.
A calling hour will be held Monday at the Beth-El Christian Fellowship Church in South Royalton from 10-11 a.m. and the funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. David Wright and Rev. Leland King will be officiating. Burial will follow in the Spring Road Cemetery in Tunbridge. The Boardway & Cilley Funeral Home, Main Street, Chelsea are in charge of arrangements. Beryl E. Dailey
WORCESTER - Beryl E. Dailey, 82, passed away on Sept-ember 14, 2003 at Mayo Nursing Home surrounded by family and devoted care givers.
She was born on December 24, 1920, daughter of Jessie Ellen (White) and Calvin Pratt of Worcester. Mrs. Dailey attended Worcester Village School, Montpelier Seminary and graduated from Montpelier High School in 1938. She was married to Earl F. Dailey on July 11, 1938. Mr. Dailey predeceased her on July 3, 1996. She worked as the Worcester Postmistress for 30 years. Memberships include Worcester United Methodist Church, North Branch Grange #483, National League of Postmasters, and League of Retired Federal Employees.
She was predeceased by four brothers, Milo Pratt, Harold Pratt, Milton Pratt, and Robert Pratt; and by two sisters, Mrs. Raymond (Marion) Graham and Ruth Pratt. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Duncan (Earlene) Forbes and Mrs. Wayne (Dolly) Richardson, both of Worcester; one sister, Nora Davis of Northfield, and one brother, Leighton Pratt of Lancaster, N.H. Grandchildren include Michael Forbes and wife Lisa of Worcester, Steve Forbes of Waterbury, Mrs. Dot Davy and husband James "Cricket" of Worcester, and Don Spear and wife Sandra of Ashville, N.C.; seven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Dailey had a love of people, children in particular. She welcomed school groups to the post office and let them cancel their own letters. She was an active participant at St. Michael's School where she would accompany her great granddaughter, Jessie, on field trips. She also enjoyed sharing her blueberry muffins made from her own picked berries.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2003 from 7 p.m. - 9 p.m. at Guare and Sons Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday, September 19, 2003 at 1:00 p.m. at Worcester United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Worcester Village Cemetery. BARRE CITY - Funeral services for Louisa A. Fuller, of Valliere Avenue, who died September 9, 2003 at the Central Vermont Hospital in Berlin, were held Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy St., Barre.

Words of remembrance were offered by her daughters Donna Tomasini and Dianne Vander Bush; grandchildren Tamara Tomasini-Grenier, Rhonda Thygesen, Ronald Anderson and Joanne Garibold; great grandchildren Ryan, Kristy and Katie Thygesen and Kellan and Ali Grenier, and nieces Norma Atherton and Sr. Lorraine Ambrosini.
The bearers were grandsons David and Ronald Anderson and Gregg Fuller; great grandsons Ryan Thygesen and Kellan Grenier; and nephews Jack Girompini, Christopher Atherton and Scott Dennis. Burial was made in the Hope Cemetery.
Great granddaughter Kristy Thygesen played "Infinity and Beyond" on the flute following the Committal Benediction at the cemetery. Fellowship and luncheon followed at the Mutuo Inc. on Beckley Street.
Carl Shepard
BEAVERCREEK, OH - Carl Wayne Shepard, 91, formerly of Montpelier, passed away Sunday afternoon, September 14, 2003, at Hospitality Home West in Xenia, Ohio.
He was born July 15, 1912, in Berlin, the son of Emanuel and Charlotte St. John Shepard. He retired in 1974 as assistant treasurer at National Life Insurance Co.
He is survived by his wife, Anna Provost Shepard of Beavercreek, Ohio, formerly of Northfield; daughter and son-in-law, Carlene and Edward J. Biron, Beavercreek, Ohio; a son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Susan Shepard, Niceville, Fl.; a sister, Ruth Bishop, Burlington; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers, Harold and Cedric Shepard.
Private services will be held at the convenience of the family. Neeld Funeral Home, 1276 N. Detroit St., Xenia, Ohio, is in charge of arrangements.
Gerald P. Smith
MONTPELIER - Gerald P. Smith, 75, of Montpelier, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on September 12, 2003.
He was born in Williston, Vt., on July 26, 1928, the son of John and Cecile (Seymour) Smith. He married Anita Richardson in October 1949, living many years in Burlington and later moving to Montpelier. He was employed with the city of Montpelier, and worked for area paving companies as well. He is survived by his children, Jerry Smith, James Smith, Sandra Holt, Betty Crawford, Myra Smith, and Joey Smith; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren; his sister Rita Mason and his brothers Richard Smith and John Smith. He was predeceased by his parents, brother Walter "Buck" Smith and grandson Timothy Smith.
In his younger years, Gerald was a fine musician and member of the Northeast Fiddlers Association. He also loved to hunt and fish.

Raymond A. Duval
WELLS RIVER - Raymond A. Duval, 74, of 4085 Leighton Hill Rd., died Friday, Sept. 12, 2003, at his home.
He was born Sept. 19, 1928, in Scotstown, Quebec, the son of Albert and Christianna (Campbell) Duval. He was educated in Canadian schools and moved to the United States in his early twenties.
Mr. Duval had been employed as an auto mechanic at LaMontagne Motors and Blake Chevrolet in Bradford, Daniels Transportation in Lebanon, and at Deter Security in Lyndon.
Survivors include his wife, Doris (McFadden) Duval of Wells River; two sons, Robert Duvall of Woodsville, N.H.; 6 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services and burial will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

Anne Christine Flanders
Anne Christine Flanders, 84, of Brazier Road, East Montpelier, beloved wife of Ralph N. Flanders, passed away after a long illness Friday, September 12, 2003.
Born December 26, 1918, in Englewood, New Jersey, she was the daughter of George Lawson and Alice Ferrier of Dundee, New York. She graduated with a Bachelor's of Science with a major in nursing from the University of Rochester in 1942. She married Ralph Norris Flanders on March 2, 1946, and bore nine children.
She worked as a visiting nurse in Rochester, New York, as well as at Sage Memorial Hospital in Ganado, Arizona. She moved to Vermont with her husband in 1946 and nursed at Heaton Woods Hospital in Montpelier. She served as director of the Montpelier Home Health Agency from 1967-1970. She worked for Berlin Convalescence Center briefly before working as a public health nurse for the Vermont Health Department. Anne taught natural childbirth classes at The Health Center in Plainfield for which she also served as chair. She was active in her community and acted as Chair of the Zoning Commission in East Montpelier, President and Liaison officer of the PTA, and Chair of the Economic Survey Committee of East Montpelier Planning Group. She retired in 1984.
In retirement, Anne served as Guardian ad litem and represented children who were victims of abuse, neglect, and divorce. She received the SRS Commissioner's Award for her dedication and commitment toward children and families.
Anne was a member of St. Augustine's Catholic Church and for many years was a beloved and faithful member of Christ Church Episcopal in Montpelier, Vermont. She served as Sunday school superintendent and was a member of St. Andrew's Society of Vermont.
She is survived by her husband Ralph of East Montpelier, and her children, Jonathan and wife Nancy Wallace of Troy, New York; Mark and his partner Roger Loeb of Detroit, Michigan; Naomi of East Montpelier; Deborah of Burlington, Vermont; Elizabeth Bissell and her husband Richard of Putney, Vermont; Eunice her husband Ken Jacobson of Natick, Massachusetts; Lois of Montpelier, Vermont; and Jamie and partner Greg Esposito of Plainfield, New Jersey. She is predeceased by her second son Timothy Ernest. Her grandchildren include Neil Timothy Schmidt, Rhys and Darrel Flanders, Isaac and Mary Clare Bissell, Brittany Wells, and Esther Nemethy.
An avid gardener, Anne also loved children, bird watching, Scottish country dancing, classical music, dogs and singing. An avid collector of "10th children," she loved people and was well loved in return.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 15 at St. Augustine's Catholic Church, 16 Barre Street, Montpelier. Burial will follow in Plain-Mont cemetery in East Montpelier. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Episcopal on 64 State Street in Montpelier on Tuesday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m. with a reception immediately following. Friends may call at Barber and Lanier Funeral Home, 139 Main Street, Montpelier, Sunday, 7-9 p.m.

George E. Rowley
WASHINGTON - George Edward Rowley, 84, of MacDonald Road, died Friday, September 12, 2003, at the Rowan Court Health and Rehabilitation Center in Barre.
Born November 22, 1918, in Portsmouth, VA, he was the son of James Edward and Zolikoffer (Zella) Roberson Rowley. He graduated from Craddock High School in Portsmouth and attended the Virginia Military Institute in Lexington before joining the US Navy in March 1938,.
Mr. Rowley was assigned to the Navy Submarine Base in New London, CT in May 1940, and was aboard the U.S.S. Tautog at Pearl Harbor when it was attacked on December 7, 1941. He also served on the U.S.S. Puffer, Tench, Red Fish and Drum in the South Pacific and Western Australia prior to his discharge as a Chief Petty Officer on December 9, 1945.
He worked for the Curtis Bay Towing Company and the Newport New Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Virginia. He retired in March 1973 and moved to Washington, VT, in September 1992. He was a licensed aircraft pilot and chief engineer of motorized marine vessels. He belonged to the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association and the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II.
Mr. Rowley was preceded in death by his wives, Cordelia Belew Rowley Lonas, whom he married on April 22, 1944, and Carol Parker Orme Rowley, whom he married on March 19, 1949; his brother, Frank Gatti; his sisters Amelia G. McLean and Alma G. Bradford; and his parents.
He is survived by his daughters, Karen Rowley West of Dublin, GA, and Jean Rowley Ellestad of Frankfort, KY; his grandchildren, David Edward Ellestead an Karen Elizabeth Ellestead of Frankfort, KY; and devoted family friends, Phyllis B. Paquet and Cheryl, Michael, Jim and David Buzzi, all of Barre.
Services will be held on Sunday at 3:00 p.m. at the Rowan Court Health and Rehabilitation Center in Barre. Interment
will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Washington on Monday at 2:00 p.m.

Donna R. Mason
BRAINTREE - Donna R. Mason, 47, died Thursday, Sept. 11, 2003, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
She was born Feb. 3, 1956, in Newport, the daughter of Theodore and Audrey (Lanou) Mason.
Donna attended Snowsville schools and graduated from Braintree Randolph Union High School in 1975. Following her education, she moved to Orlando, Fla., with her sister.
She worked as a horticulturist at Disney World from 1978 to 1985 where she was in charge of the Canadian Pavilion at Epcot Center. She moved back to Braintree in 1986.
She loved animals, and she enjoyed fishing and gardening.
Survivors include her mother of Braintree; two brothers, Michael Mason of Randolph and Gary Mason of Braintree; her sister, Judy Camp of Mt. Pleasant, N.C.; a niece and a nephew.
Memorial services will be held Tuesday, Sept. 16, at 2 p.m. at the Day Funeral Home with Chaplain Christopher Junker officiating. There are no calling hours. Private burial services will be in the East Braintree Cemetery.

Anne Christine Flanders
EAST MONTPELIER — Anne Christine Flanders, 84, of Brazier Road, East Montpelier, beloved wife of Ralph N. Flanders, passed away after a long illness Friday, September 12, 2003.
Born December 26, 1918, in Englewood, New Jersey, she was the daughter of George Lawson and Alice Ferrier of Dundee, New York. She graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science with a major in nursing from the University of Rochester in 1942. She married Ralph Norris Flanders on March 2, 1946, and bore nine children.
She worked as a visiting nurse in Rochester, New York, as well as at Sage Memorial Hospital in Ganado, Arizona. She moved to Vermont with her husband in 1946 and nursed at Heaton Woods Hospital in Montpelier. She served as director of the Montpelier Home Health Agency from 1967-1970. She worked for Berlin Convalescent Center briefly before working as a public health nurse for the Vermont Health Department. Anne taught natural childbirth classes at The Health Center in Plainfield, for which she also served as chair. She was active in her community and acted as chair of the Zoning Commission in East Montpelier, president and Liaison officer of the PTA, and Chair of the Economic Survey Committee of East Montpelier Planning Group. She retired in 1984.
In retirement, Anne served as a guardian ad litem and represented children who were victims of abuse, neglect, and divorce. She received the SRS Commissioner’s Award for her dedication and commitment toward children and families.
Anne was a member of St. Augustine’s Catholic Church and for many years was a beloved and faithful member of Christ Church Episcopal in Montpelier, Vermont. She served as Sunday school superintendent and was a member of St. Andrew’s Society of Vermont.
She is survived by her husband Ralph of East Montpelier, and her children, Jonathan and wife Nancy Wallace of Troy, New York; Mark and his partner Roger Loeb of Detroit, Michigan; Naomi of East Montpelier; Deborah of Burlington, Vermont; Elizabeth Bissell and her husband Richard of Putney, Vermont; Eunice her husband Ken Jacobson of Natick, Massachusetts; Lois of Montpelier, Vermont; and Jamie and partner Greg Esposito of Plainfield, New Jersey. She is predeceased by her second son Timothy Ernest. Her grandchildren include Neil Timothy Schmidt, Rhys and Darrel Flanders, Isaac and Mary Clare Bissell, Brittany Wells, and Esther Nemethy.
An avid gardener, Anne also loved children, bird watching, Scottish country dancing, classical music, dogs and singing. An avid collector of “10th children,” she loved people and was well loved in return.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, September 15 at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church, 16 Barre Street, Montpelier. Burial will follow in Plain-Mont cemetery in East Montpelier. A memorial service will be held at Christ Church Episcopal on 64 State Street in Montpelier on Tuesday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m. with a reception immediately following. Suzanne Lincoln
MONTPELIER – Suzanne Lincoln, 64, passed away September 12, 2003 at her home, surrounded by her children.
She was born June 15, 1939 in Waterbury, the daughter of Rollie G. and Phyllis (Copeland) Martin.
Sue graduated from Waterbury High School in 1957, where she was an all-state basketball player. During this time she was a member of the Waterbury Congregational Church where she sang in the choir and participated in the Pilgrim Fellowship program.
She married John F. (Fred) Stone Jr. in Waterbury on December 28, 1957. They were married for eighteen years and shared four children.
Sue later married John Lincoln of Montpelier, devoting many years to travel, gardening, and family. They were divorced in 2000.
Sue had a great love for her family and her special pets. She especially loved being with family on the holidays and vacationing with her children and grandchildren in York Beach, Maine. Her Westies, Angus and Piper, gave her many years of friendship and fun.
She was the owner/operator of Trombley’s Flower Shop in Northfield until retiring last year. Sue had a great passion and special talent for creating beautiful floral designs, and was very proud of the home that she filled with her work and the many reminders of those that she loved and was loved by.
Sue was a Deacon and member of the choir at the First Baptist Church in Montpelier. The congregation and its Pastor, David Asel were a very special part of Sue’s life.
Though she knew that her time was short, Sue remained as she had always been, courageous and strong of faith, an inspiration to those around her and an incredible mother, grandmother, and friend.
She is survived by her children John F. (Jay) Stone III of Montpelier, Sarah Macleay of Enfield, NH, Suzanne Smith of Montpelier, and Andrew Stone of Randolph, MA; her grandchildren Branson and Camden Macleay of Enfield, NH and Nathan, Jacob, and Laura Smith of Montpelier; her siblings Carlie Lanza of Winthrop, MA, Rollie James (Jim) Martin of Northfield, and John C. Martin of Montpelier; her mother Phyllis Martin of Montpelier; and nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father Rollie G. Martin and her special “Westie” friend, Angus.
A celebration of Sue’s life will be held Monday September 15, 2003 at 6:00 PM in the First Baptist Church in Montpelier. Burial will be at a later date in the Berlin Corner Cemetery.

Mabel V. Davis Geno
BRIDGEWATER – Mabel V. Davis Geno, “Gram Geno,” age 98, died Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003 at the Gill Odd Fellows Home in Ludlow.
Prior to entering the Gill Odd Fellows Home, she lived with her son and daughter-in-law, William and Wahnetta Geno, in Bridgewater Center.
She was born on June 4, 1905, in North Shelburne, the daughter of William and Anne (Gokey) Davis.
Shirley Bellew
CASTLETON – Mrs. Shirley B. Bellew, 81, died Saturday morning, September 13, 2003 at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Shirley was born on July 3, 1922 in Highland Falls, N.Y., the daughter of the late Charles and Fanny (Cox) Booth. She married James Bellew in HIghland Falls on Sept. 19, 1948. James predeceased his wife in 1987.
Shirley was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Castleton and a longtime member of the Altar Society of her church. She was also a volunteer for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program in Rutland.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 16, 2001 at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in Castleton. The Rev. Charles R. Danielson, pastor, will officiate.

Charles H. Andrews
HANCOCK - Charles H. Andrews, 95, died Saturday Sept. 13, 2003 at the Helen Porter Health and Rehab Center in Middlebury.
He was born in Hancock on July 5, 1908, the son of Fred and Lura (Howe) Andrews. He was educated in Hancock schools.
He married Earline Burke; they are now divorced. He married Doris Kirby on October 24, 1957 in Middlebury.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking, and coin detecting. He operated the generator at Weyerhauser Co. in Hancock for many years, retiring in 1973.
He leaves his wife of Hancock; a daughter, Ramona Benoit of Rochester; a brother, Lauren Andrews of Hancock; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Roberta Crickard; two brothers, Theo and Norman Andrews; four sisters, Francis Upton; Jennie Buttles; Alene Bisson; and Ruth Harnois.
Graveside services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2003 at 1 p.m. the Woodlawn Cemetery in Rochester with Pastor Frank Morgan of West Rutland officiating.
There are no calling hours.
