Antoine J. Landry
MONTPELIER - Antoine Joseph (Tony) Landry, 89, of Mountainview Street, Montpelier died Saturday, August 30, 2003 at the Vermont Respite House.
Tony was born July 10, 1914 in Websterville, VT the son of Bruno and Mary (Campo) Landry and he received his education in Williamstown Schools.
He entered the US Army on Jan. 13, 1941 and served five years during World War II. He was a Master Sergeant in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, European Theater of Operations and Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean, and was discharged Jan. 14, 1946.
He married Rosemary Sullivan in St. Augustine Church on October 12, 1953. Rosemary died March 13, 1992.
Tony worked as a mechanic for Drown Motors, Pratt & Whitney Corporation, Tavern Garage, co-owner of the Esso Service Station on Memorial Drive, and the State Highway Garage on the Barre-Montpelier Road until he retired in 1976.
Tony was a member of St. Augustine Church, Life Member of Barre American Legion Post # 10 and VFW # 792, and was a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include a brother-in-law, Charles Chapman of Windsor Locks, CT; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was predeceased by four brothers, Alex, Emile, Joseph & Alfred and one sister, Eliza Chapman.
A Funeral Mass will be offered at 11:00 a.m., Friday, Sept. 5, 2003, at St. Augustine Church. Burial will follow at St. Augustine Cemetery.
Calling hours will be Thursday from 7-8 p.m. at Guare & Sons Funeral Home. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
Memorial contributions maybe made to Vermont Respite House, 99 Allen Brook Lane, Williston, Vermont 05495.
Special thanks and acknowledgments are given to Central Vermont Home Health nurses, therapists and aides who allowed Tony to remain independent in his home for five years after his stroke in 1998. Meals on Wheels provided not only nutritious meals but friendly volunteers who delivered them.
Woodridge Nursing Home provided Tony with professional care until he was able to transition to Heaton Woods in late May where again the nurses, aides and staff provided him with tender care and the opportunity to remain as independent as possible.
When Tony was diagnosed as terminal, he moved into the Vermont Respite House in Williston.
Words cannot express the love and compassion extended by the staff and volunteers to Tony during his final week where he was allowed to die with peace and dignity.
Finally, to Mike Danko, Tony's best friend, who supported him throughout with daily phone calls and frequent visits, a special thanks. Tony was a real gentleman who had a sense of humor and touched lives in such a way that everyone loved him. He was a special person and will be missed by all.
To all mentioned above and others too numerous to mention, a sincere thank you. Peace with all of you!

MONTPELIER - A funeral mass for Tony Landry, who died Aug. 30. 2003, was held Friday at 11 a.m. at St. Augustine Church.
Rev. Thomas P. Mosher, pastor, officiated and Rev. Mr. Regis Cummings served as deacon.
Bearers, all 4th-degree members of the Knights of Columbus, were: Roger Frazier, Roland LaFayette, Edward Ferrari, and Robert Menard. Honorary escort at the funeral mass and an honorary guard at the casket during calling hours were provided by members of the 4th-degree of the Knights of Columbus.
Rev. Mosher and members of the Knights of Columbus offered a prayer vigil and a rosary at Guare & Sons Funeral Home on Thursday night.
Burial was in St. Augustine Cemetery, Montpelier where members of the Vermont Army National Guard provided military honors. The American flag was presented by Ellen Hood.

Gordon Lewis
BARRE TOWN - A service of remembrance for Gordon H. Lewis, who died Aug. 22, 2003, was held Thursday at the Vermont Veterans' Memorial Cemetery Chapel in Randolph Center.
The Rev. William Baran, brother-in-law, officiated.
Words of rembrance from his family and prepared by Deborah Thompson, daughter, were read by Rev. Baran.
The flag was presented to Rachel Lewis, widow, at the graveside by Bruce W. Judd.
Fellowship and luncheon followed at the Prosper Community House in Woodstock.

Clara Perreault
ORANGE - Funeral services for Clara M. Perreault of George Street, who died Aug. 23, 2003, were held Wednesday at the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home in Barre.
The Rev. Albert Collins, pastor of the Websterville Baptist Church, officiated.
Mario Perreault, granddaughter, offered words of remembrance.
Eric Morton, Jeff Morton, Jay Morey, William Morey, Andrew Morey, Gerard Perreault Jr., Michael Lamberton Jr., Scott Perreault, William Waite and Brent Kidder, all grandsons, were bearers.
Burial was at the Village Cemetery in Williamstown.

Beverly Rossi Rites
BARRE - The Service of Remembrance for Beverly S. Rossi, 81, of Sunrise Drive in Groton and a former Franklin Street resident, who died on August 25, 2003 at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, was held Thursday at 6:00 p.m. in the Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home in Barre. The Rev. David Vanderlinde-Abernathy, pastor of the Barre Congregational Church, officiated.
Guitarist, Paul Vanderlinde-Abernathy, accompanied his father in the hymn, "In The Garden."
"Memories of My Gram Rossi," written by grandson Christopher Rossi, was read by Rev. Vanderlinde-Abernathy.
Representatives from the Eastern Star, The Gardens in Williamstown, and the Lake Groton Association were in attendance.
Interment was in the Hope Cemetery in Barre, where Rev. Vanderlinde-Abernathy offered committal prayers.

Maureen Young
CABOT - Maureen V. Young, 47, a resident of Cabot for 20 years, died Aug. 31, 2003 at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
She was born in Silver Creek, N.Y., the daughter of Maurice and Lauretta (LaBrie) Young.
She married Richard Young July 7, 1977, in Bethel, Conn.
Mrs. Young was an E.M.T. member of the Cabot Rescue Squad. She formerly worked as a licensed nurses' aide in Northeastern Vermont Regional Hospital in St. Johnsbury.
She was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Barre.
Survivors include her husband of Cabot; her mother; a son Richard Young of Cabot; and five daughters, Jeannette Johnson of North Troy, Jeannine Young of Wyomissing, Penn., and Jacquelyn Young, JustineYoung and Juliette Young, all of Cabot.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Berlin.
There are no calling hours.

Raymond Willey Jr.
NORTHFIELD - Raymond A. Willey Jr. of Route 12A, died Aug. 29, 2003, at the Mayo Healthcare in Northfield.
He was born Nov. 19, 1931, in Northfield, the son of Raymond and Edith (Sears) Willey.
He attended schools in Northfield.
He had been married to Lorette Messier.
Mr. Willey served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He worked at Rock of Ages corp. in Barre for more than 25 years.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #6674, both in Northfield.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing and working with his tractor.
Survivors include a daughter Darlene of Northfield; two sisters, Vivian Sharpe of Northfield and Ella Joslyn of Lady Lake, Fla.; and one grandson.
His brother Lionel Willey and sister Lillian Garner are deceased.
A graveside service is pending at the Vermont Veterans' Memorial Cemetery in Randolph Center.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Kingston Funeral Home in Northfield.

Judith C. Benedini
BARRE — Funeral services were held on Wednesday for Judith C. Benedini, 56, who died Aug. 23, 2003. The Rev. Richard Forcier officiated. Burial was in Hope Cemetery, Barre.

Henry R. Bertrand
WHITING — The graveside committal service and burial, with military honors, for Henry Raymond Bertrand, 82, who died Aug. 28, 2003, was held Saturday at Whiting Community Cemetery.
Mr. Bertrand’s nephew, the Rev. Bernard Bourgeois, pastor of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Waterbury, officiated. The Rev. Albert “Skip” Baltz, pastor of St. Mary’s Church in Brandon, held a vigil service at the funeral home before the service.
Pallbearers were Matthew Keith, Jim Rowe, Scott Bertrand, Kevin Bertrand, David Blair, Randy Bertrand, and Clint Snyder.
Members of Brandon American Legion Post 55 accorded graveside Military Honors. Norman Reed, Chaplain, delivered a Legionaries Service. Dudley Berry, Post Commander, presented a bible to Mr. Bertrand’s son, Michael. Chaplain Reed also presented the American flag to Michael.

Leo K. Metayer
WATERBURY — Leo K. Metayer, 76, a longtime resident of Waterbury Center and currently of Hyde Park, passed away at Fletcher Allen Health Care in Burlington on Friday, August 29, 2003. Born in Fairfield on December 6, 1926, he was the son of the late Joseph and Eva (Giroux) Metayer. On July 18, 1950 he married the former Pearl Ripley in Waterbury.
Leo attended Waterbury High School. He served his country during WWII with the US Army in the Philippines. Following his discharge, he and his two brothers formed Metayer Construction and together they built and renovated many homes and businesses in the Waterbury area. In 1971, Leo took over the business and became Metayer Construction and Supply, adding a hardware store to the enterprise. He retired in 1989.
His memberships included the Waterbury Grange 237, was a founding member and former assistant fire chief of the Waterbury Center Fire Dept. from 1959-1987, a member of the VFW Post 10034, the American Legion Post 59, the Waterbury Area Senior Citizens, the St. Andrew Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus of Waterbury.
In his leisure time he enjoyed woodcarving, painting, puzzles, and playing cards with family and friends.
He will be missed for his sense of humor, honest opinions, smiles, his good natured picking on family and friends, and the love he shared with and for his family.
He is survived by his wife, Pearl Metayer of Hyde Park; their children, Laura Stacey and her husband, James of Hyde Park, Joseph Metayer and his wife Jill of Waterbury Center; his grandchildren, Shane Stacey and his fiancee, Marnie Koubec, Josie Stacey, Jennifer Metayer and foster grandson, Peter J. Smith; a sister, Germaine Wood and her husband, Everett of Windsor; a brother, Marcel Metayer of Waterbury; and many nieces and nephews. A brother, Ernest Metayer, a sister, Agnes Orfield, and foster grandson, Roger Rivard, predeceased him.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated from St. Andrew Catholic Church in Waterbury on Tuesday at 11 a.m. Friends may call at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home on Monday evening from 7-9 p.m. Interment will take place in the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph on Wednesday at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Waterbury Grange 237, PO Box 134, Waterbury Center, VT 05677, or the St. Andrew Catholic Church, 109 So. Della L. Ohmen
BETHEL — Della L. Ohmen, 91, of East Bethel, died Wednesday, Aug. 27, 2003, at Genesis Elder Care in Lebanon, N.H.
She was born May 25, 1912, in East Granville, the daughter of George H. and Nina H. (Jones) Luce.
She attended schools in Bethel, South Randolph, East Granville, and Montpelier.
She married Charles F. Ohmen on Nov. 11, 1942, in Woodbury, Conn. He died in 1960.
She was employed at The Inn on Lake Waramaug in New Preston, Conn., for 24 years.
Mrs. Ohmen moved to East Bethel in 1985. She enjoyed reading, writing letters, and poetry.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Bouchard of Pepperhill, Mass., as well as many nieces and nephews.
Her brother, Francis Luce, and two sisters; Wanda Kingsbury and Harriet Rogers, predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Day Funeral Home. Private burial services will be held in the New Preston Cemetery in Connecticut at a later date. There will be no calling hours.

Marjorie S. Smith
BETHEL — Marjorie S. Smith, 88, of Bethel, died Aug. 28, 2003, at the Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
She was born Nov. 23, 1914, in East Barnard, the daughter of Ransom and Kate (Thompson) Sabens.
She attended schools in East Barnard.
She married Cecil Smith in 1945 in Wallingford, Conn. They made their home in Fayston, East Randolph, and moved to Bethel in 1977.
Mrs. Smith was employed by Fritzel Toys, Van Raalte, Tranquility Nursing and at Gifford Hospital, all in Randolph.
She enjoyed gardening, picking berries, knitting, and crocheting.
She is survived by her daughter, Trudi Blossom of Bethel and her sister, Florence Braley of Randolph.
Her husband, Cecil, died in 1977. Two brothers, Charles Sabens and Stanley Allen, also predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Day Funeral Home, Randolph.
Burial will be in the East Randolph Cemetery. Calling hours will be from 7 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

BETHEL — Reta B. Whitaker, 72, died Aug. 29, 2003, at the Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.
Arrangements are pending with the Day Funeral Home.

Annie M. Marden
WATERBURY - Annie M. Marden, 85, died July 18, 2003 in Williston at the home of her daughter, Joan Kaigle, and Spencer Wright. She was born on October 25, 1917, to Frank and Mary (Batchelder) Perry. On November 13, 1937 she married Vincent P. Marden, who predeceased her on February 16, 1989.
Annie was a 1935 graduate of the former Waterbury High School. She spent her life as a homemaker, and raised seven children. She was a member of Waterbury Center Community Church, and a member, Past President and Noble Grand of Emerald Rebekah Lodge No. 33. In earlier years she was a member of the 500 Card Game Club, and as an avid cribbage player, as always ready to meet any challenger.
Survivors include her daughter; sons Frank, Sandy Valley, NV; Vincent, Las Vegas, NV; Charles, Braintree, VT; Michael, Barre, VT; Matthew, Fort Myers, FL; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and a brother, Kenneth Perry, Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. Close friends include a sister-in-law, Elizabeth Schimizzi, Watkins Glen, NY, and a brother-in-law, Harold Marden, Waterbury Center. She was pre-deceased by a son, Mark, a grandson, Chris Kaigle, and sisters, Mary, Fran and Lucille.
Memorial services will be held at the Waterbury Center Community Church on September 3, 2003, at 10 a.m. Annie's family would like to express their gratitude to the many who aided in her care over the years.

Richard Messer
WAITSFIELD - Richard Kenneth Messer - 81, passed away at the Rowan Court Nursing Home in Barre on Wednesday evening, August 27, 2003. Born in Lowell VT on February 1, 1922, he was the son of the late Frederick H. and Carrie I. (Preman) Messer. He married the former Jennie A. Palmer on August 21, 1947 in Waitsfield. Jennie passed away on Nov. 10, 1971. On July 21, 1977, he married the former Eloise Farnsworth Cormier in Montpelier. Eloise predeceased him on June 14, 2001.
Richard attended school in Lowell and later Newport, where he graduated. He was a farmer for many years at Meadow Crest Farm in Waitsfield. Selling his stock in 1964, he went to work for Grenier Gas Co. in Waterbury and later for the State of Vermont Highway Dept., retiring in the mid - 1980's.
His memberships included Mad River Lodge # 77 F&AM, a life member of the Canadian Club and Loyal Order of the Moose, both of Barre, and the Pond Village Church in Brookfield. In his leisure time, he enjoyed fishing and woodworking.
Richard is survived by his children, Frederick R. Messer and his wife, Josette and Dorothy Peck and her husband, Stanley, all of Waitsfield; 3 granddaughters, Yvonne Peck of Nashua NH, Torey Peck of No. Carolina, and Melissa Lindhiem of Vestal NY; a niece, Lucinda Messer of Derby; a grand nephew, Andrew Sargent of E. Hartford CT; a dear friend of the family, Minnie Robinson of So. Royalton as well as seven step-children. Two sisters, Doris J. Sargent and Mildred Duchesnean, and two brothers, Clifford L. Messer and Gordon F. Messer are deceased.
Funeral and Masonic services will be held from the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Sunday at 2 p.m. where friends may call from 1 p.m. until the hour of the service. Interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Moretown. Emma Denison
READING - Emma G. Denison, 71, died Aug. 26, 2003, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H., after a long illness.
She was born Sept. 30, 1931, in Burlington, the daughter of Fred B. and Doris M. (Ducharme) Green.
She attended school in Tunbridge.
She married Wendell a. Denison Sr. May 16, 1948. They ran a dairy farm on West Hill in Chelsea for 20 years, when she also worked at the Poultry Processing Plant in south Royalton. They lived in Windsor for 20 years before moving to Reading.
Mrs. Denison also worked at Whitney and Blake in Bellows Falls as a molder and at the Mt. Ascutney Resort as a housekeeper.
She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Charlestown, N.H.
She enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, vegetable gardening, flowers, feeding the birds and visiting with people.
Survivors include three sons, Wayne C. Denison of Michigan, Wendell Denison Jr. of Windsor and Donald Tallman of Reading; a daughter Cindy L. Coburn of Sunapee, N.H.; two brothers, Fred B. Green Jr. of Tunbridge and Maxwell G. Green of Sharon; two sisters, Esther Kennedy of White River Junction and Rose Maher of Rochester, N.Y.; two granddaughters and five great-grandchildren.
Her husband; three sons, Arthur, Allen and Larry Scott Denison; and a daughter Emma Denison are deceased.
A graveside memorial service will be held at p.m. Tuesday at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Washington.
There are no calling hours.

Bernard Grout
WATERBURY CENTER - Bernard George Grout - 73, of Loomis Hill Road, passed away unexpectedly in Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Monday, August 18, 2003. Born in Mont-pelier on March 8, 1930, he was the son of the late Francis and Carrie (Harvey) Grout. On October 16, 1965, he married the former Phyllis Rushford in Waterbury Center. He and his wife have made their home in Waterbury Center for the past 37 years.
Bernard attended the Rock Bridge School in Moretown. He served his country during the Korean War with the U.S. Army.
Bernard worked as a baker at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury for over 40 years. Following his retirement, he enjoyed gardening, lawn mowing and stoking the wood fire at his home where he enjoyed being most.
He was a 44-year member of the Harry N. Cutting American Legion Post 59 in Waterbury.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Grout of Waterbury Center; 2 daughters, Lisa Grout of Waterbury Center and Carrie Marshia and her husband, Stanley Marshia Jr. of Waterbury; 3 brothers, Edwin Grout of No. Chelmsford MA, Lester Grout of Fort Walton Beach FL, and Fredrick Grout of Waterbury; 3 sisters, Marjorie Keith of Berlin, Wanda Clement of Milford NH and Norma LaRow of Wolcott; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 6 brothers.
Funeral services will be held from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury on Friday at 11 a.m. with interment to follow in Hope Cemetery, Waterbury. Alice Greene
BRAINTREE - Alice A. Greene, 80, died Aug. 18, 2003, at her daughter's home in Williamstown after a long illness.
She was born Feb. 25, 1923, in Ascutney, the daughter of Amedee and Rose (Belliveau) John.
She attended St. Mary School in Claremont, N.H.
She married Albert Amell of Claremont, N.H. in 1938. He is deceased.
She married Benjamin W. Greene of St. Johnsbury on Oct. 1, 1957. They lived in Oakland, Calif., for 12 years before moving to the Bethel and Randolph areas for 25 years. For the past four months she has lived with her daughter, who cared for her.
Mrs. Greene was a homemaker and enjoyed decorating her house during the holidays and playing bingo in the central Vermont area.
She had attended St. Joseph Church in Claremont, N.H.
Survivors include her husband of St. Johnsbury; three daughters, Shirley A. Hurst of Randolph, Rosemary E. Howe of Randolph Center and Maryann E. Greene of Williamstown; a sister Marion Allen of Oregon; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
A brother Robert John is deceased.
A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Cemetery in Claremont. The Rev. Stanley Piwowar of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Claremont will officiate.
Friends may call 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Boardway and Cilley Funeral Home in Chelsea, with a rosary service at 8 p.m. by the Rev. John Milanese of Sts. Donatian and Rogatian Catholic Church.

Dave R. Laundry
MARSHFIELD - Dave R. Laundry, 37, of Thistle Hill Road, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2003, in a motorcycle accident in Cabot.
He was born Sept. 18, 1965, in Barre, the son of Reginald and Beverly (McNaulty) Laundry.
He attended East Montpelier schools and received his General Education Diploma.
Mr. Laundry worked at Cabot Creamery in Cabot.
He was a vibrant enthusiast outdoorsman.
Survivors include his companion Roxanna Tillotson of Marshfield and her daughters, Tammy, Tonia and Heather and their children; two sisters Ellen Marsha of East Montpelier and Roxann Dupont of Barre; several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11:00 AM in the Barber & Lanier Funeral Home, 139 Main St., Montpelier.
Calling hours are Thursday evening from 7-9 PM.

Ronald Bielli
AUGUSTA - Ronald R. Bielli, 82, of the Maine Veteran's Home in Augusta, Maine, and formerly of Skowhegan, died quietly in residence on August 18, 2003.
Ron was a native Vermonter, born in Barre and a graduate of Spaulding High School and the University of Vermont.
After serving in two wars, he joined the faculty of Middlebury College in 1956 where he remained until his retirement 28 years later. Ron is survived by his wife of 59 years, Rachel, of Boothbay Harbor, Maine, his three daughters and two grandchildren.
At Ron's request there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Ann Crumb, Development Office, Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT 05753. Include Ron's name either in the memo section of the check, or in an attached note.
Due to Ron's long-standing commitment to women's athletics through his participation on the Middlebury Athletic Policy Committee, monies received in his name will support the Women's Athletic Program at the College.

Jeanette Hebert
WATERBURY - Jeannette Houle Hebert, 93, of Foggy Mountain Road, died Aug. 16, 2003, at the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin after a brief illness.
She was born Feb. 2, 1910, in Hyde Park, the daughter of Arthur L. and Marie Ann (Cote) Houle.
She married Florea Hebert in 1928. They lived in Vermont before moving to Massachusetts. He died Sept. 27, 1979.
Mrs. Hebert and her husband founded Hebert's Inn, later called the Colonial House, in Bellingham, Mass., which she managed and worked as its cook for 40 years, until her retirement in 1977. After retirement she was chef on several television shows.
She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Bellingham.
She was honored with a humanitarian award from the Massachusetts State Senate and Bellingham Business Association for her charitable work for the children of the Edmundite Missions in Selma, Ala., and on April 28, 1993, she won the National Senior Mother of the Year Award from the Washington Congressional Record.
Survivors include her son George Hebert of Marshfield; a daughter Bernadette Brummitt of Uxbridge, Mass.; a brother Dr. Germain Houle of Leesburg, Fla.; three sisters, Gertrude Remby of Hopkinton, Mass., Edna Gagner and Alice Stevenson, both of Leesburg, Fla.; four grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A sister Evelyn Wigglesworth and a brother Robert Houle are deceased.
Burial will be at St. John the Baptist Cemetery in South Bellingham, Mass.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Edmundite Missions, 1428 Broad St., Selma, AL 37601 or to the Mount Sinai Shriners, 288 Gallison Hill Rd., Montpelier, VT 05602.
