William Otis Wallis
WAITSFIELD - William Otis Wallis - 94, of Main Street, Waitsfield, passed away at his home on March 6, 2003. Born in Waitsfield on July 27, 1908, he was the sixth son of Wilbur and Georgia Adell (Bragg) Wallis. He married the former Elsie Tryon on June 15, 1943 in Proctor. Mrs. Wallis passed away on February 1, 1993.
Otis, as he was fondly known in the Valley, graduated from Waitsfield High School in 1928. Otis' father, George Wallis, had been instrumental in eliminating the one-room schoolhouses and strongly supported the creation of the Waitsfield High School. The first class of that school dedicated their yearbook to George Wallis in 1922. Otis attended the Vermont School of Agriculture and took over his father's farm in November 1935. He spent his life on the farm, which his grandfather purchased in 1865 and his father farmed before him. In later years Otis sold the dairy operation and began at ravel trailer business.
Like his father before him, Otis took an active part in Waitsfield Town affairs, attending his first Town Meeting with his civics class from the high school in the basement of the Joslin Memorial Library. For over 58 years, Otis served the Town of Waitsfield in a variety of positions that included Auditor, Budget Committee member, Cemetery Commissioner, member of the Planning Commission, School Director and Moderator. He served as a director for the Mount Mansfield Creamery and the granite City Co-op. He also served as director of the Farmers Co-op Fire Insurance Co. for over 50 years.
Otis greatly loved his family, the Valley and Vermont. He loved to smoke his pipe and reminisce. His memories of early Vermont life were taped and transcribed and were placed in the Middlebury Vermont Folk Life Center. The 1993 Waitsfield Telephone Book is an example of Otis' sense of humor - a 1922 picture of the Waitsfield High School students. As the camera was being set up for the second half shot, Otis scurried to the other end of the back row and appears twice in the finished photograph.
He is survived by a niece, Anne Wallis Bull of Waitsfield; a nephew, George W. Wallis of Springfield IL; and a niece, Carolyn Mattson of Canton Center CT. He is also survived by 10 grand nieces and nephews, Rebecca Hart of Milton VT, Anthony Bull of BloomField Hills MI, Nathan Bull of Hermitage PA, Jonathan Wallis of New Delhi, India, Christopher Wallis of Arlington Heights IL, George Wallis of Davenport IA, Karyn Mattson Brigham of Waterbury CT, Lynn Ann Mattson of Hurley NY, David Mattson of Canton Center CT, and Glenn Mattson of New Hartford CT.
Graveside inurnment services will be held for Otis and Elsie Wallis from the Waitsfield Common Cemetery on Sunday, August 10, 2003 at 4 p.m.
From the 1993 Waitsfield Telephone Book… "Otis and Clifford Wallis represent a legacy which stands in the highest tradition of our Vermont heritage. As witness to this principle, these brothers recently put up a proper marker on the grave of "Black Sam" who had come to Waitsfield with their great great-grandfather in 1803. When he died at the age of 98, Black Sam was buried in the pauper corner of the Waitsfield Common Cemetery. The Wallis heirs believed that their great great-grandfather's loyal and free salve deserved the honor of a grave marker, some 140 years later".
Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.
