James A. Paulin
ROYALTON – James A. Paulin, 41, of Royalton, died Wednesday, July 23, 2003 at Gifford Medical Center in Randolph.
He was born in Burlington on June 19, 1962, he was the son of Maurice P. and Starrlee Ann (Eastman) Paulin.
Raised in Burlington and Essex Junction, he moved to Royalton in 1980. He worked at Ethan Allen Furniture Manufacturing Co. and Smitty’s Floor Covering both in Randolph.
A member of the National Rifle Association, he enjoyed both hunting and fishing, as well as NASCAR races, professional wrestling and four-wheeling.
Survivors include his mother, Starrlee Ann Paulin, Fort Mill, S.C.; three brothers, Donald Paulin, Clinton Township, Mich., Edward Paulin, Fort Mill, S.C., and Mark Paulin, Colchester; his companion of 21 years, Janice Chandler, Royalton; and many nieces and nephews.
A son, Paulin Chandler, predeceased him.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, July 28, at the United Church of South Royalton. Rev. James Proctor will officiate. Burial will follow at Branchview Cemetery in South Royalton. Calling hours will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.

Donald Jennings
ROXBURY - SFC Donald J. Jennings, U.S. Army (Ret.), age 74, passed away at his home on Sunday morning, July 20, 2003.
Donald Jennings was born July 7, 1929 in Port Byron, NY, the oldest son of Edythe (Kenny) Jennings and Frank Jennings.
He married Mary L. DuPlessis of Syracuse, NY, on August 12, 1952.
Donald Jennings enlisted in the U.S. Army in October, 1946, and served until his retirement in February of 1969. He began his career in the 38th Mountain Infantry, Camp Carson, Colorado. While there, he became part of the U.S. Army Rock Climbing Demonstration Team, and was an alternate for the U.S. Olympic Biathlon Team. In 1948, he was assigned to build and manage the Makino Ski Area in Oku Makino, Japan. He also served with the 32d Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division, in several Korean War campaigns; he landed at Inchon, the battle of Seoul and the Chosin Reservoir. On his return to the US, he was stationed at Camp Carson, Colorado, as an instructor in skiing, mountaineering, and survival, in the Mountain Training Command. During his time at Camp Carson he received the U.S. Army Expert Mountaineer Award at Salfelden, Austria. In 1957, he was assigned to the military faculty at Norwich University as a Senior Mountain and Cold Weather Instructor. He remained at Norwich until his retirement from the service in 1969. While stationed at Norwich, he co-founded the Norwich University Mountain Rescue Team, and was the first rescue director for the State of Vermont. SFC Jennings was also instrumental in the founding of the Vermont State Police Search and Rescue Team. Throughout his time at Norwich University he had various overseas assignments, Korea (1962-1963) and Vietnam (1965-1966).
During SFC Jennings' extensive military career he was also a National Ski Patrol instructor in off-trail rescue, avalanche (Circle A), and mountaineering (Circle M).
After his retirement Sgt. Jennings built and managed the Norwich University Ski Area until 1983 at which time he went into private business.
Survivors include his wife, Mary L. Jennings of Roxbury; five sons, David Jennings of Northfield, Michael Jennings of Newbury, Scott Jennings of Newbury, William Jennings of W. Berlin, Robert Leary of Roxbury; four brothers, Richard of Fayetteville, NC, Kenneth of San Antonio, TX, William of Auburn, NY, Robert of Rutland; five sisters, Frances Andrews of Auburn, NY, Mary Jones of Toano, VA, Nancy White of Philadelphia, PA, Suzanne Nolan of Auburn, NY, Marjorie Jennings of Syracuse, NY; seven grandchildren: Audrey Jennings of Los Angeles, CA, Michelle Drake of Newbury, Donald Jennings of Norwich, Alan Jennings of W. Berlin, Marie Jennings of W. Berlin, Kari Jennings of Northfield, Kathleen Jennings of Northfield; two great grandchildren, Jonathan Drake of Newbury, Kailey Drake of Newbury; and many nieces and nephews.
His brother, John Jennings died previously.
There are no calling hours. A graveside service will be conducted Monday, July 28 at 1 p.m. in the Vermont Veterans' Cemetery in Randolph, with full military honors accorded. Ethel Robbins
WATERBURY - Ethel Tracy Robbins, 99, of Waterbury, died July 17, 2003, at the home of her son in Lyndonville, where she lived for the past six months.
She was born Oct. 5, 1903, in New Brunswick, N.J., the daughter of Arthur M. and Mae (Crosley) Tracy.
She married Orlando Robbins April 15, 1927, in Waterbury.
Mrs. Robbins was a 70-year resident of Waterbury. She worked as a domestic in the Waterbury area and at the Vermont State Hospital for many years.
She was the family historian and enjoyed discussing the past and cooking.
Survivors include a son Edward Robbins of Lyndonville; a daughter Myrtle LaFrance of North Haven, Conn.; her sister Josephine Longley of Windsor Locks, Conn.; 13 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
A son Ernest; three sisters, May Russell, Ida Cubit, Evelyn Zietler; and a brother Arthur Tracy are deceased.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Waterbury Center Cemetery. David Peterson will officiate.

Florence Sherman
DUXBURY - Florence E. Sherman - 78, passed away unexpectedly at the Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin on Tuesday, July 22, 2003. Born in Warren on November 30, 1924, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Elizabeth (Garland) Whitworth. On April 2, 1946 she married Wayne E. Sherman in Montpelier. Mr. Sherman passed away on March 19, 1999.
Florence was a 1942 graduate of the former Waitsfield High School and continued her education, attending business school in Brattleboro. As a young woman, she was employed by the Social Welfare Dept. for the state of Vermont. Following her marriage she was busy as a homemaker, raising her family and helping Wayne on the farm. She later worked for several Waterbury area businesses as office help before taking a position with the Vermont State Hospital, retiring in 1987 as supervisor of the word processing unit.
Her memberships included the Dillingham Grange #281 of Duxbury, a 50-year member of the Busy Bees Christmas Club of Duxbury, the Vermont State Retired Employees Assoc., the Vermont chapter of the Lupus Foundation and the Wesley United Methodist Church. Her leisure time was spent enjoying playing the piano, crafts, baking, gardening, traveling with her family and family get-togethers.
Florence is survived by her children, Janice Quimby and her husband, Raymond of Northfield, and Francis Sherman and his wife, Janice of Waterbury; 3 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren; a brother, Lorne Whitworth of Warren; as well as nieces and nephews. Two brothers, John Whitworth and Francis Whitworth predeceased her.
Funeral services will be held from the Wesley United Methodist Church in Waterbury on Friday at 2 p.m. Friends may call at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury on Thursday from 7-9 p.m. Interment

Frank Brown Jr.
BRADFORD - Frank H. Brown Jr., 67, died July 21, 2003, at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H.
He was born Aug. 10, 1935, in South Strafford, the son of Frank H. and Marjorie A. (Sheldon) Brown.
He attended school in Strafford and later Thetford Academy, where he graduated in 1954.
Mr. Brown entered the U.S. Army in 1954, and served for two years.
He married Phyllis M. Straw of Post Mills in 1959. They moved to Bradford in 1964, where they owned and operated the Browns-Plain Dairy Farm until 1985. He worked at the Bradford rest area and the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in White River Junction until he retired in 1998 for health reasons.
He was a member of the American Legion Post #20 in Bradford.
He enjoyed sports, deer hunting, animals, vegetable gardening, playing golf and the Cleveland Indians baseball team.
Survivors include his wife of Bradford; two daughters, Brenda Cook of Proctor and Melanie Black of Burlington; a brother Charles Brown of South Strafford; four sisters, Corabelle Ammel of Hartford, Barbara Sargent of Fairlee, Mary Lou Kelley of Brownsville and Rita DeGoosh of Fairlee and four grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Sawyer Cemetery in Bradford. The Rev. Charles Davignon will officiate.

Bernard Guilmette
EAST MONTPELIER - Bernard "Fuzzy" Guilmette, 74, died Sunday, July 20, 2003, at Central Vermont Hospital.
Bernard was born August 30, 1928, in Mont-gomery Center, the son of Bernard W. and Thelma (Bennett) Guilmette Sr.
He married Bettina Anderson in 1945. She is deceased. In 1982 he married Marcia Finn.
Bernard attended school in Enosburg. He was better known as Fuzzy, a nickname he acquired in his early years when he came back into logging camp with a butch haircut. He drove 18-wheelers for over 48 years without ever having an accident. His talents and skills as a truck driver were only exceeded by the friendships that he developed over the East Coast. Bernard gained respect of other drivers, business owners and clients while driving for Interstate Equipment, Dubois Trucking, St. Johnsbury Trucking and Bellavance Trucking.
He had a great passion for camping in New Hampshire, always making new friends wherever he went. Fuzzy loved to deer hunt and could always make it a social event. During the racing season you would always find him in front of the TV watching NASCAR with his son, grandson and their friends.
He is survived by his wife Marcia Guilmette of East Montpelier; his children, Kathleen Mongeur and her husband Raymond of Castleton, David J. Guilmette and his wife JoAnn of East Montpelier, John Guilmette and his wife Janice of Waterbury; stepdaughter Carlen Finn of Marshfield; stepson Robert Keller of Burlington; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and many friends.
Calling hours will be held from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 23, at Guare and Sons Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday at The Old Meeting House Church. Burial will take place at Doty Cemetery in East Montpelier immediately following the funeral.

Maria Dellavia
NORTHFIELD - Maria M. Dellavia, 90, died July 20, 2003, at the Mayo Healthcare in Northfield.
She was born Sept. 5, 1912, in Tonezza, Italy, the daughter of Peter and Ermines (Sella) Canale.
She married Charles "Cirillo" Dellavia Feb. 7, 1934, in Vincenza, Italy. He died Dec. 23, 1994.
Mrs. Dellavia moved to Northfield in 1934, where she worked at Northfield Hosiery for 20 years and later at Norwich University's mess hall for 20 years.
She was a member of St. John The Evangelist Church in Northfield.
Survivors include a sister Rita Scarpa of Jersey City, N.J., nieces and nephews.
Two brothers, Marion and Christopher Canale, are deceased.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. John The Evangelist Church.
Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Northfield.

Wilford Davis
SUMMERFIELD, Fla. - Wilford "Ardin" Davis, 72, formerly of Sharon, died July 18, 2003, at his home in Summerfield.
He was born March 5, 1931, in Braintree, the son of Charles and Lula (Johndro) Davis.
He attended schools in Braintree.
Mr. Davis served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He married Sally Royce Aug. 25, 1951, in Braintree.
He worked as an engineering technician for Split Ballbearing, now Timken Aerospace, in Lebanon, N.H., for more than 30 years. He retired in 1993 and the family moved from Sharon to Summerfield.
He enjoyed sports and riding his bicycle.
Survivors include is wife of Summerfield; two sons, Chuck Davis and Vaughan Davis, both of Lebanon, N.H., two daughters, Judi Barra of Huntington, Mass., and Debra Follensbee of Summerfield; two brothers Richard Davis of Randolph, Vt., and Norman Davis of Sharon, Vt.; four sisters, Audrey Lemery of Northfield, Geneva Deyette and Fleda Stone, both of Braintree, Vt., and Charlene Ghelback of Essex Junction, Vt.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A son Richard Davis is deceased.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Day Funeral Home in Randolph.
Private burial will be at the Mountain View Cemetery in Braintree.

Dana Esquibel
BARRE - Dana M. Esquibel, 36, of Barre, died July 5, 2003, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
He was born May 21, 1967, in Topeka, Kan., the son of Joseph Henry and Cynthia Esquibel.
Survivors include Beth Ann Martin, his companion of nine years; a daughter Natasha Lynn Esquibel of Barre; a son Steven Joseph Esquibel of Barre; his father Joseph Henry and grandfather Raphael Esquibel Sr., both of Topeka.
His mother died in December 1969.
Memorial services will be held at a later date in Topeka.
Bert Hellman
WAITSFIELD - Bert A. Hellman - 96, of Old County Road, passed away at Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin on Monday, July 21, 2003. Born in Bridgeport CT on October 16, 1906, Mr. Hellman retired to Warren with his late wife Helen, after a thirty-year career with General Electric.
He served as the Alpine Village President, treasurer for the Town of Warren for several years, and as a state representative to the Council on Aging. Roses from his lovely garden graced many tables throughout the Valley for over thirty years.
Mr. Hellman is survived by a son, Robert Hellman Sr. and his wife, Jeanne of Oxford CT; a daughter, Shirley DeHond of Bluffton SC; 2 grandsons, Robert Hellman Jr. and his wife, Betsi of Oxford CT and Thomas Hellman of Woodbury CT; as well as two great-granddaughters.
There will be no calling hours. There will be a private service held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are in the care of the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.
Blanch Martin
WORCESTER - The funeral service for Blanch C. Martin, who died July 18, 2003, was held Monday at the Worcester Methodist Church in Worcester.

Yvonne M. Dion Rites
EAST BARRE - A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Saturday at 11:00 a.m. in St. Frances Cabrini Catholic Church in East Barre for Yvonne M. Dion, 94, a long-time Mill Street resident, who died Thursday, July 10, 2003, in the Woodridge Nursing Home in Berlin.
The Rev. Donald Roy, pastor, was the celebrant. Organist, Angeline Ennis accompanied soloist, Rosemary Badeau and the congregation in the hymns, "Here I Am Lord," "Prayer Of St. Francis," "Be Not Afraid," and "How Great Thou Art." Rosemary Badeau also sang the hymn, "Ave Maria."
Grandson, Mark Dion offered words of remembrance. The scripture readings from the Old and New Testaments were by granddaughter, Andrea Dion and grandson, N. Michael Dion; the Responsorial Psalm was by granddaughter, Mary Beth Carey; and the Prayer of the Faithful was by grandson, Michael Dion.
Great grandchildren, Megan, Christopher, and Michael Dion, Dylan and Amanda Dion, Ian and Taylor Carey, Zachary Ward, and Michela Smith presented the offertory gifts at the altar.
Interment
took place in the St. Sylvester Cemetery in Websterville with Rev. Roy offering the committal prayers. Honorary Bearers were all grandchildren, Mark Dion, N. Michael Dion, Matt Dion, Mary Beth Carey, Marcia Dion, Thomas Dion, Melissa Ward, Andrea Dion, and Michael Dion.
A time of fellowship and a luncheon for family and friends at the Hilltop Restaurant on Quarry Hill followed the committal service.
The Hooker and Whitcomb Funeral Home, 7 Academy Street, Barre, was in charge of the arrangements.
Steve A. Flood, Rites
WASHINGTON, VT - Funeral services were held Saturday July 19, 2003 at 1 p.m. at the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home for Steve Flood of 2261 VT Rte. 110 who passed away July 16, 2003 at his home.
Pastor Robert Bartram, Jr. of the Washington Baptist Church officiated.
Prerecorded hymns were, "Sheep May Safely Graze," "Adoramus Te, Christe," "Ave Verem" and "Amazing Grace."
Words of remembrance were shared by Steve's brothers and sisters. Amber and Christie Cushing, nieces of the deceased, read a poem entitled, "When Tomorrow Starts Without Me."
Active bearers were, Danny Flood, Kenneth Flood, Richard Flood and Darryl Flood, all brothers; Sandra Cushing and Patricia Howard, both sisters.
Burial was in Plain-Mont Cemetery in East Montpelier, VT where Pastor Bartram offered Committal Prayers.
A fellowship luncheon was held following the burial at Richard and Kelley Flood's home on Willey Street in Barre.
Services were in the care of the Pruneau-Polli Funeral Home, 58 Summer St., Barre, VT.
Roy Willard
BERLIN - Roy Willard, 101, went to meet the Lord Sabbath morning July 19, 2003 from his home in Berlin, VT. He as the oldest member of the Barre-Montpelier Seventh-Day Adventist Church. Roy was born in East Montpelier on April 2, 1902. He was the son of Charles K. and Eula May Willard. He had three brothers, Ralph, Arthur, and Stanley who are all deceased. He was married to Mary E. Irwin on February 14, 1924 until her death December 27, 1981. They had eight children: Phyllis Morris and Earl Willard, now deceased, Maurice Willard (VT), Arlene Sweeney (MA), Joyce McGhinnis (NC), Andrew Willard (GA), Beverly Thorburn (OR) and Clarence Willard (CA).
There are nineteen grandchildren and many great grand children.
He married Helen Knutson in July 1985. She has two children from a previous marriage: Bruce Knutson (VT) and Betty Cananzey (NH). Roy and Helen were living in Westons Trailer Park at the time of his death.
Roy worked as a farmer and plumber and operated his own plumbing business. Roy was still driving himself and his wife to church and getting groceries until the first of May. His health had failed in the past month and he had many friends and family members visiting him at the end. He was well respected and loved by everyone.
There will be a graveside service on Wednesday July 23rd 1:30 p.m. at the Berlin Corner Cemetery officiated by Pastor Jack Baker of Cabot, VT. Arrangements were made by Barber & Lanier.
Mark Khouri
BURLINGTON - Mark Jesse Khouri, 27, of Burlington and formerly of Plainfield, died July 6, 2003 in Cabot.
He was born in Morris-ville, the son of Lance and Jennifer (Cobb) Khouri.
He was educated at Twinfield High School in Plainfield.
Survivors include his mother and step-father Jenifer and Aurelio Gellegos of Marshfield; a brother Matthew Khouri of Marshfield; and two sisters, Vanessa Smith and Annabel Khouri, both of Burlington.
A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Unitarian Church in Montpelier.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Barber and Lanier Funeral Home in Montpelier.

Harold Bobar
MORETOWN - Harold L. "Bud" Bobar, 51, died July 10, 2003, at Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin.
He was born Dec. 17, 1951, in Burlington, the son of Harold W. and Catherine (Kilby) Bobar.
He graduated from Spaulding High School in 1971.
He was first married to Rachael Davis. He married Susan "Shandrae" Crede September 10, 1983, in Bolton. She died March 11, 2002.
Mr. Bobar worked for Raphael Lowe on a farm in Duxbury before helping his father in the family taxi business in Waterbury. He later worked at the Vermont State Hospital in Waterbury and delivered newspapers for the Burlington Free Press and The Times Argus.
He enjoyed fishing, horseshoes, country music, going for drives, crafts, gardening, going to lawn sales and horseback riding.
Survivors include two daughters, Chrystyne Bobar of Kansas City, Mo., and Martha "Zoe" Crede-Bobar of Montpelier; two sisters, Susan Bobar-Smedley of Berlin and Barbara Dupre of Waterbury; and a brother, Clyde Bobar of Gilbertsville, Pa.
His parents are deceased.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Perkins-Parker Funeral Home in Waterbury.
Inurnment will be at Holy Cross Cemetery in Duxbury.

William Heidenreich
HANOVER, N.H. - William C. Heidenreich, 92, of Hanover, N.H., died July 9, 2003, at his home, surrounded by his family.
He was born May 28, 1911, in Terre Haute, Ind., the son of William and Sadie Catherine (Evelo) Heidenreich.
He lived for a short time in Texas after the death of his mother, but spent most of his youth in Terre Haute, where he graduated Wiley High school in 1929.
He received a bachelor of science degree in chemical engineering in 1933 from Rose Polytechnic Institute (now Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology), where he was elected to Tau Beta Pi, an honorary engineering society, and was president of his graduating class.
In 1932, he and Rosa Elizabeth Carr eloped and were married in Charleston, Ill.
Mr. Heidenreich worked for the Union Carbide Corporation, beginning in 1934, in South Charleston, W. Va., and later in Shawinigan, Quebec, Canada; Niagara Falls, N.Y.; New York City; Monterrey, Mexico; Calcutta, India; Antwerp and Brussels, Belgium; and Geneva, Switzerland. He was a member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and a fellow of the American Institute of Chemists.
After retiring from Union Carbide in 1971, Bill and Rosa renovated a farmhouse near East Corinth and were very active gardeners and community members.
He enjoyed designing and building solar energy systems. He was Energy coordinator for the Town of Topsham, an energetic member of the town planning commission, trustee of the East Corinth Congregational Church, and member of Rotary for over fifty years.
He and his wife traveled with the International Executive Service Corps to Thailand, Taiwan, India, Brazil, and Mexico.
He enjoyed taking courses with his wife at Community College of Vermont and ILEAD.
Since 1999 they have lived at The Greens in Hanover, N.H.
Survivors include a daughter, Toby of Waterbury Center, Vt.; two sons, John and Jim, of East Corinth; two brothers, Carl and Ralph, both of South Charleston, W.Va.; 15 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
A brother, Alexander, died in 1993.
A celebration of his life will be held at 3 p.m. July 19th, at the East Corinth Congregational Church.
Burial will be private at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, gifts in Bill's memory may be made to the East Corinth Congregational Church or to VNA-VNH Hospice of Lebanon, N.H.

He was born April 12, 1960, in Orange, the son of Nelson A. and Margaret L. Willey.
He was educated at Oxbow High School in Bradford.
Mr. Willey worked at area farms and at Frist Student Bus Co. He also did automotive work, was school custodian and ran his own lawn and garden business. More recently he worked for RSD.
He was married to Irma Parker in Bradford. He later married Cherly Parker in Fairlee.
He was a member of the Vershire Volunteer Fire Department, the Thetford Fire Department and Vershire Days.
Survivors include five sons, Raymond Willey Baker of North Carolina, George Willey Baker of Georgia, Rodney Willey Baker of North Carolina, and Patrick and Douglas of Vershire; a brother Nelson Willey of Williamstown; two sisters, Peggy Thompson of Orange and Lisa Smith of Topsham and two grandchildren.
His parents are deceased.
A graveside service will be held at 6:30 p.m. July 23 at East Topsham Cemetery.
