Esther Marie Arthur
Esther Marie Arthur, 74, of Pittsburg died at 1:20 a.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at the Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.
She was born May 11, 1930 in Fort Scott to William and Nadine Wines Einhellig.
She married Earl Arthur on Jan. 6, 1949 in Fort Scott. He preceded her in death on Feb. 12, 2004.
She attended Fort Scott Schools, and had lived in southeast Kansas all her life.
She worked 20 years for Wal-Mart where she worked in and managed the jewelry department.
Survivors include four sons, Gregg Arthur of Pittsburg, James E. Arthur of Pierce City, Mo., Larry Arthur of Opolis and Steve Arthur of Pittsburg; half brothers, Bill Einhellig and John Einhellig; half sisters, Cathy Crabtree and May Lou Steele of Siloam Springs, Ark.; and three granddaughters.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and two children, Pamela and Tony Arthur.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Friday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg. Burial followed in the Garden of Memories Cemetery.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home 522 S. Broadway.
Dorothy Irene Lopp
Dorothy Irene Lopp, 78, of Columbus, died at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 27, 2004 at her home in Columbus following an 18-month illness.
She was born Aug. 25, 1925 in Columbus to Vernie and Jessie Cool Teel.
She married Byrl Dean Lopp on April 7, 1946 in Columbus. He preceded her in death on Jan. 27, 1981.
She was a lifetime resident of Columbus and was a 1943 graduate of Columbus High School.
She worked for Long Bell Lumber Yard in Columbus, the Cherokee County Courthouse, Karbies Piggley Wiggley, Charlie's IGA in Columbus, Lopp Oil Company and Evans Drug Store.
She was a member of the First United Methodist in Columbus, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Columbus, the Coterie Club and Clio Club.
Survivors include a daughter, Sally Allen of Springfield, Mo.; two sons, John Lopp of Columbus, and Dr. Tom Lopp, DVM, of Ottumwa, Iowa; a sister, Emma Jean Aldrighetti of Columbus; and three grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Deanna Sue Lopp on Jan. 31, 1959 and three brothers, Bob, Kenneth, and Harry Teel.
Funeral services were 10:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Columbus with Rev. Don Flanner officiating. Burial will follow in the Park Cemetery in Columbus. The Order of Eastern Star will had rites at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus.

Larry Dean Thomas Sr., 58, of Girard, died Thursday, July 29, 2004, at his home.
Ina F. Theys
Ina F. Theys, 86, of Michigan, formerly of the Girard and Pittsburg areas, died at 10:59 a.m. Thursday, July 29, 2004 in Troy, Mich.
She was born April 16, 1918 at Girard to Tom and Addie Corckett Mauterer.
She is survived by her son, Louis Gasperut of Michigan; a sister, Lois Flannigan; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Theys.
Graveside services were 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Pittsburg with Father Thomas Stroot officiating. Visitation was 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Pittsburg. Arrangements are under the direction of the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway.
Harold W. Kidder
Harold W. Kidder, 91, of Girard, died 6 p.m., Thursday, July 29, 2004, at the Heritage Health Care Center in Chanute. He entered the health care center on Jan. 27.
He was born Jan. 6, 1913 at Pittsburg to Charles W. and Lottie May (Brown) Kidder.
He grew up and attended schools in Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1931.
He married Lillian Wilkins on Aug. 25, 1940 at Walnut. She preceded him in death on Aug. 13, 1945. He then married Mary H. Atha in February of 1948. She preceded him in death on July 23, 2003.
He attended Kansas Teachers College, now Pittsburg State University for two years.
He served in U.S. Navy from Aug. 24, 1943 until Nov. 19, 1945.
He worked for Fadler Produce in Pittsburg and later in the grocery business in Girard.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Girard and the George C. Brown Post No. 26 American Legion of Girard.
Survivors include one son, James L. Kidder of Des Moines, Iowa; one step-son, Jack Bennett of Chanute; one step-daughter, Chloe Ann Tingey of Chanute; two grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; numerous step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Lewis Kidder of Arizona; and one sister, Helen Kidder of Pittsburg.
He was preceded in death by an infant son.
Funeral services for Harold W. Kidder were 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Girard Cemetery with Rev. Steve Cole officiating. Flag folding and presentation will be by the George C. Brown Post No. 26 American Legion of Girard.

Scott Alan Miller
Scott Alan Miller, 87, of Girard, died at 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, in the Swedish Hospital in Denver where he entered Sept. 29.
He was born Aug. 18, 1918, in Pittsburg, to Purl Franklin and Orilla (Light) Miller. He grew up and attended schools in Pittsburg and graduated from Pittsburg High School in 1936.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.
He married Marjorie Alene Bennett on May 5, 1940, in Kingman. She preceded him in death on March 8, 1988.
They lived in Kansas City, Louisville, Ky., and Pittsburg, before settling in Girard.
He owned and operated a radio and television repair shop in Girard for over 50 years. He was a substitute and later a full time rural mail carrier near Girard. He retired in 1983 to provide care for his wife prior to her death.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Girard and the Girard Lions Club. He provided a public address system for many school functions and at Wutke Park during the Fourth of July celebrations. He was a member of the Steven C. Bennefeld Post No. 7479, Veterans of Foreign Wars of Girard, the George C. Brown Post No. 26, American Legion of Girard, and a past precinct chairman.
Survivors include his companion, Madeline Harrigan of Girard; one daughter, Pamela A. Miller of Denver; two grandchildren of Denver; one great-granddaughter, of Denver; and one sister, Mary Miller Martin of Wichita.
He was preceded in death by one brother, William Miller.
Funeral services were Friday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery.

Charles Waterman
Charles Waterman, 91, died, Wednesday, January 12, 2005, in Florida.
He was born in 1913 on a grain farm near Girard. He attended Kansas State Teacher's College, now Pittsburg State University, where he took journalism classes.
He married DeBie. He stated writing outdoor articles in 1934 for the Pittsburg Headlight, where he worked as both a reporter and photographer.
He served as an officer-in-charge of a Navy combat photo team in the South Pacific during World War ll. After the war, he worked as a photographer at the San Mateo Times in San Mateo, Calif. The couple moved to Florida in 1952.
He wrote an outdoor column for the Jacksonville Times-Union. He taught literature and journalism at Stetson University for a year while establishing a freelance outdoors-story market. He spent 71 years writing award-winning pieces about light-tackle and fly-fishing and the best spots to hunt elk, deer and moose. He also was the author of 20 books on fishing and hunting. He wrote a monthly column for the Florida Sportsman and won several awards during his career. He earned the 1957 Outdoor Achievement Award by the Florida Association on Magazine Publishers, won the Florida Governor's Conservation Award in 1964 and was named the Top U.S. Outdoor Writer from the National Outdoor Writer's Association in 1976.
Claude Douglas Baker
HEPLER - Claude Douglas Baker, 80, of Hepler, died at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, March 3, 2005, in the Mercy Health Center in Fort Scott.
He was born Oct. 11, 1924 at Hiatville, a son of Charles and Lillie Elizabeth (Webb) Baker. He grew up and attended schools in the Hiatville and Hepler areas.
He married Cleta Jean Chambers on July 22, 1946 at Girard. She survives of the home.
He and his family owned and operated Baker's Cafe in Hepler for many years. He worked in the area for Schoenhofer Brothers Trucking and HMS/Derailed Commodity as a truck driver and drove for many years for various companies.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Hepler, the Hepler Ruritan Club and the Marmaton Masonic Lodge No. 245, AF & AM, of Moran.
Survivors include two sons, William W. Baker of Fort Scott, Keith Baker of Texas and Charles Baker of Hepler; three daughters Marilyn Stroud of Moran, Claudia Ausemus of Hepler and Susan Kroenke of Iola; 12 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Baker of Humboldt; and four sisters, Lucille George of Iola, Rosalie Harrison of Iola, Margaret Allen of Batesville, Miss. and Alice Goff of Shawnee.
He was preceded in death by one granddaughter Traci Ann (Stroud) Krouse on Jan. 24, 2004.
Funeral services were Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Hepler with Rev. Pauline Clugston officiating. Burial will be in the Hepler Cemetery. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard.
Merle Ted Spencer
BAXTER SPRINGS - Merle Ted Spencer, 73, of Baxter Springs, died at 9:40 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2005, at his home.
He was born Nov. 8, 1931, in Oswego to Elizabeth Spencer.
He attended area schools. He served in the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged.
He was a machine operator for Ace Forms for 15 years. He was a custom harvester for 10 years. He worked for Newman's Boats in Miami, Okla., in the fiberglass department for nine years.
He was of the Christian faith. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Galena.
He married Erma Lee Imbeau on Aug. 21, 1960, in Columbus. She survives of the home.
Survivors include one son, Doug Spencer of Chanute; one daughter, Sonjia Leone of Weir; and four granddaughters.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sherman City Cemetery with the Rev. Jamie Tickle officiating. Family and friends are requested to meet at Bath-Naylor Funeral Home in Columbus to leave in procession to the cemetery by 10:15 a.m. Thursday. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Friends may call the funeral home after 3 p.m. Wednesday. Cleo Fern (Gilbert) Mengarelli
Cleo Fern (Gilbert) Mengarelli, 86, of rural Girard, died at 4 a.m., Wednesday, May 16, 2007, at her residence.
She was born March 11, 1921, at Englevale, Kan., the daughter of Garrett Cleo and Chloney Fern (Cunningham) Gilbert. She graduated from Girard High School and received her teaching certificate.
She was a school teacher and homemaker.
She married Augustine "Augie" Mengarelli on April 5, 1942 at Farlington, Kan. He preceded her in death last Wednesday, May 9, 2007.
They were lifelong farmers at rural Girard.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Farlington, the United Methodist Women, a Methodist Youth Fellowship leader, a 4-H leader, Home Demonstration Unit, and a charter member of the Girard Alumni Association. She enjoyed her roses, gardening, playing dominoes and she was an excellent cook.
Survivors include sons August Eugene and spouse Doris of Prescott, Ariz., and Jimmie and spouse Ann
of Girard; daughters Barbara and spouse Ed Babcock of Arma, Beverly and spouse Dick Vogel of Topeka, Roselle and spouse Dwight Gorrell of Centerville, Kansas and Rachelle Mengarelli of Arma; thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Friday, May 18 at the Union Cemetery northeast of Girard with Tony Stark officiating. The family will receive friends following the services at the cemetery. Friends may call after 1:00 P.M., Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard.

Garry W. Preston
COLUMBUS - Garry W. Preston, 64, of Columbus, died at 7:25 a.m. Saturday, May 27, 2006, at the Medicalodge of Columbus.
He was born March 11, 1942, in Hallowell, to Theodore Everett and Lora Marguerite (Hains) Preston. He attended school in Hallowell. In 1959, he graduated from CCHS in Columbus. He joined the Army Reserves, reciving the rank of Sergeant. He was later honorably discharged.
After returning from service, he worked at the Columbus State Bank for several years. He moved to Pittsburg where he worked at several other banks. He was a banker for 27 years.
He was a former resident of Grove, Okla., from 1988 until recently moving back to Columbus.
He was a past member of the Pittsburg Masonic Lodge No. 187 for 25 years. He also was a past member of the Mirza Shrine, Scottish Rite, York Rite and a member of the Oswego Order of Eastern Star. He held membership in the Methodist Church.
Survivors include one brother, Wyman Preston of Hallowell; two sisters, Ila Mae Froelich of Hallowell and Rosemary Hartman of Pittsburg.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
Graveside services were Tuesday at the McKee Cemetery near Hallowell. His brother-in-law, Raymond Hartman will be officiating the service.

Joseph Eldon McNamara
ARMA - Joseph Eldon McNamara, 72, of Arma, died at 3 a.m. Friday, May 26, 2006, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.
He was born Sept. 21, 1933, in Mulberry, to Miles Bernard and Ada (Rank) McNamara. He attended schools in Breezy Hill No. 9 and Arma.
He served his country in the U.S. Air Force, during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. While in the service he went overseas to Greenland, Thailand, and Alaska. He was honorably discharged after 20 years of service, as an S/SGT at the Richards-Gebaur AFB in Missouri.
On Feb. 4, 1952, in Girard, he married Bernadean Rae Ann Cleffman. She survives of the home.
After returning from the service, he worked as a salesman for Dobrauc Oil Company for 19 years, retiring in 1994.
He attended the Arma Methodist Church.
Additional survivors include a daughter, Linda Diane Miller of Pittsburg; two sons, Robert Allen McNamara of Pittsburg and John Joe McNamara of Frontenac; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three more great-grandchildren due this year; and a host of cousins and numerous nices and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Robert Eldon McNamara and brother, Raymond Lee McNamara.
Graveside services were Tuesday at the Shiloh Cemetery in rural Arcadia, with Brother Roger John Rank officiating.

Donald Badart
Donald Badart, 70, of Pittsburg, died at 7:40 p.m., Wednesday, May 24, 2006, at Mt. Carmel Regional Medical Center in Pittsburg.
He was born Jan. 4, 1936, in Pittsburg, to Oscar Joseph and Hazel Jewell (Slaughter) Badart. He attended area schools.
He served his country in the U.S. Army. He was honorably discharged.
On Jan. 30, 1955, in Pittsburg, he married Freda R. Miller. She survives of the home.
He worked for Ray Wisdom Construction; Stark Rock Quarry; Broadway Lumber and Frito Construction. He later was the owner-operator of Badart Construction. He was in the construction business for more than 30 years.
He was of the Christian faith.
He belonged to the Benjamin Fuller American Legion Post No. 64 of Pittsburg; the V.F.W. and the D.A.V. He was a member of the West Mineral Eagles Lodge No. 918.
Additional survivors include a son, Donald Badart of Cherokee; a daughter, Debra Ann Badart of Columbus; sisters, Marilyn Horn of Las Vegas, and Sandra Jo Hamblin of Franklin; brothers, Johnny Joseph Badart of Pittsburg, and Jimmy Badart of Ellsworth; one granddaughter; two step-granddaugthers; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Ronald Badart; and sisters, Imogene Davidson and Beverly Jaynes.
Funeral services were Saturday at the Bath-Naylor Funeral Home, 522 S. Broadway Pittsburg, with Fr. Robert McElwee officiating.

Harvey M. McFarland
Harvey M. McFarland, 94, of Pittsburg, died at 1:10 a.m., Tuesday, May 23, 2006, at St. John's Regional Medical Center, Joplin, Mo.
He was born March 19, 1912, at Walnut, to James E. and Lillie Marshall McFarland. He attended school in Walnut graduating in 1929.
He served in World War II from 1943 until 1946 at Ft. McClellan, Ala., and was honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant.
On August 19, 1931, he married Margie Long in Walnut. She preceded him in death on Oct. 30, 1968. They owned and operated Mac's Cash Grocery until 1937. Then, he operated the DX Service Station for one year and then built his own service station in 1938, which he operated until selling it in 1971. He also worked for the Prest Lumber Company at Erie, from 1972 until 1981.
On January 31, 1970, he married Helen L. Pryor at Pittsburg. They moved to Pittsburg in October 1993. She survives at the family home.
He was the city treasurer of Walnut, retiring after 50 years of service.
He was a member of the Walnut United Methodist Church. After moving to Pittsburg, he became a member of the Countryside Christian Church. He was a member of the Vulcan Lodge AF & AM at Walnut since 1942 and and a 60 year member American Legion since 1946. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Craw-Kan Telephone Coop Association for 28 years.
Additional survivors include a step-son, William G. Pryor of Scottsdale, Ariz.; two step-daughters, Margaret Bailey and Patricia Sweetser, both of Pittsburg; and six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and his first wife.
Services were Friday at the Brenner Mortuary, with Dan Muter, minister, officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. Fourth St., Pittsburg.
Bill E. Comozzie
SUGAR HILL, Ga. - Bill E. Comozzie, 74, of Sugar Hill, Ga., died Saturday, May 20, 2006.
He was born in California on June 21, 1931. He lived in Tulsa, Okla., for more than 40 years and graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1950.
He was a retired manager from Mitchell Motors Automobile Dealership in Chamblee, Ga.
He was a member of the Sugar Hill United Methodist Church and attended Midway United Methodist Church in Alpharetta, Ga.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Taylor Comozzie of the home; two daughters, Kim Harrison of Cumming, Ga., and Nancy Boore of Girard; son, Rod Comozzie of Cumming; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, David Allen Comozzie.
A memorial service was Friday, at the Chapel of Midway United Methodist Church with Rev. Calvin Haney officiating.

Cpl. Richard A. "Ricky" Bennett
Cpl. Richard A. "Ricky" Bennett, 25, of Girard, died Saturday, May 30, 2006. He died when the Cobra helicopter he was in crashed into Al Habbaniyah Lake, 30 miles west of Baghdad, in Iraq.
Bennett was part of the First Marine Expeditionary Force Forward, Third Marine Aircraft Wing, 16th Marine Air Group, HMLA 169.
He was born on Feb. 10, 1981 in Girard, to Larry and Marilyn Bennett.
He received his Automotive Technician Degree from Pittsburg State University in 2002.
He enlisted in the Marines on May 10, 2004. He was deployed to Iraq on March 27, 2006. He received a Letter of Appreciation, the National Defense Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, and the Navy and Marine Corp. Achievement Medal.
Survivors include his parents, of the home; his sister, Angela Barrett of Nevada, Mo.; his fiancee, Janine Cracchiolo of San Clemente, Calif.; his grandfather, Roscoe Peterson, Sr., of Girard; a nephew, a niece, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Carrie Peterson; his paternal grandparents, Alva and Mildred Bennett; and three uncles, Floyd, Bob and Harold Bennett.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Michael's Church Hall in Girard. Pastor Bill Cox of the First Baptist Church in Nevada, Mo. will officiate. The eulogy will be given by Greg Malm. Burial will be in the Girard Cemetery with military honors given by the United States Marine Mobilization Command, the George C. Brown Post No. 26, American Legion of Girard, the sons of the American Legion of Girard, and the Stephen Bennefeld Post No. 7479 and Veterans of Foreign Wars of Girard.
Mary Lou Shaffer
COLUMBUS - Mary Lou Shaffer, 74, of Columbus, died Saturday, June 3, 2006, at the Freeman West Hospital in Joplin, Mo.
She was born Feb. 10, 1932, to George E. and Claire (Lee) Hopkins in Augusta. She was raised in Opolis and attended area schools. She furthered her education after high school and earned her bachelor degree in special education as well as a masters.
In 1954, she married Billy E. Shaffer and she later settled in Columbus. He preceded her in death on Feb. 6, 1991.
She worked in special education reading programs in Columbus and the surrounding area and worked to help children that were stuggling with their reading skills. She worked for 30 years in the Columbus school district and retired in 1991.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of Columbus, the Columbus Library, Who's Who In America, started the Title I Chapter Reading Program, Member of the Eatern Star, American Legion Ladies Auxiliary, and the Retired Teachers Association.
Survivors include daughters, Linda Lee (Shaffer) White of Columbus and Vicki Sue (Shaffer) Aldrighetti; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and a brother, George Vanse Hopkins.
Per the families wishes private family ceremonies will take place at a later date.

Jerry R. Hallacy
ERIE - Jerry R. Hallacy, 66, of rural Erie, a long-time farmer and stockman, died at 8:55 p.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2006, at his home.
He was born July 25, 1939, in Girard, to John M. and Leona I. (Trainor) Hallacy. He grew up in the Girard/Walnut area. He graduated from Walnut High School in 1958.
He worked for Hy-Grade in St. Paul and was employed by the Greenbush Seed and Supply from 1972 to 1979. He also worked for the Katy Railroad for eight and a half years. He began working for Neosho County as a dump truck driver in 1986 and had been employed there.
He married Norma J. Born on Feb. 14, 1961, in St. Paul. She survives of the home.
He was a member of the St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul.
Additional survivors include one son Jerry Joe Hallacy in St. Paul; one daughter, Vicky Olenhouse of Seneca; two grandchildren; four brothers, Gene Hallacy and Bob Hallacy, both of Girard, Bill Hallacy of Shell Knob, Mo., and Herb Hallacy of Hooker, Okla.; six sisters, Mary Kay Mason and Joan Scales, both of Girard, Rita Ann Tierney and Dorothy Murphy, both of Pittsburg, Ginger Cronister of Augusta, and Lou Clark of Wichita.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, James Patrick "Pat", Hubert E., Dwayne, and John "Jack" Hallacy; and one infant sister.
Funeral mass was Saturday at the St. Francis Catholic Church in St. Paul. Burial will be in the St. Francis Cemetery.

Roger R. Stroud
FARLINGTON - Roger R. Stroud, 67, of Farlington, died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, May 28, 2006, at his home.
He was born July 15, 1938, in Silver City, Iowa, to Russell N. and Charlotte A. (Culbertson) Stroud. He grew up and attended schools in Iowa.
He served in the U.S. Navy from January 1956 until January 1962.
He was a lifelong trucker, having owned and operated his own truck.
He married Ruth Hunt on Jan. 8, 1979, in Miami, Okla. She survives of the home. They were caretakers at Elm Creek Lake near Hiattville before moving to Farlington in 1996. He retired in 2004.
Additional survivors include two sons, Rodney Stroud of Humboldt and Eddie Kirbey of the home; six daughters, Sharon Barnhart of Chanute, Marie White of Humboldt, Denise Shavely of Iola, Annette Brandell of Farlington, Laura McCall of Humboldt, and Tonya Keith of Arma; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Esther Eddy of Florida and Alta Mae Edwards of Oakland, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Teresa Stroud-Wagner in 1986; one grandson, Derrick Cole Brandell; one brother, Richard Stroud; and one sister, Gladys Marie Bates.
Funeral services were Friday at the United Methodist Church in Farlington with Rev. Steve Cole officiating.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Girard.
Janice R. Smutz
Janice R. Smutz, 47, of Pittsburg, died Tuesday morning, Sept. 27, 2005, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was born June 27, 1958, in Iola, to JoAnn and Richard Tice. She attended area schools, graduating from Moran High School with the class of 1977. She went on to cosmetology school in Pittsburg where she graduated in 1980.
She married Ronald W. Smutz Sr. on July 6, 1980 in Pittsburg. He survives of the home.
She was a member of the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church in Pittsburg where she worked in the office and volunteered around the church.
Additional survivors include her sons, Donny M. Smutz of Joplin, Mo., Ronny W. Smutz Jr. of Fort Riley, and Justin L. Smutz of Kansas City, Mo.; and daughter, Sarah R. Smutz of Pittsburg; sister, Sheila Ivy of Iola; brothers, Dave French of Osawatomie, Steve French of Iola, James French of California, and Shawn Wood of Gardner; her biological father; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her mother; adopted father, James P. French; and brother, Matthew French.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Lighthouse Tabernacle Church in Pittsburg with Rev. Daryl Gaddy officiating. Burial will follow in the Highland Park Cemetery.
