Samuel Lester Hugg
Samuel Lester 'Les' Hugg, 78 of Brazil died October 14, 2004 at 3:23pm at Harborside Healthcare Facility. He had been in failing health since May.
He was born March 28, 1926 in Ridgefarm, IL. The son of Carl E. Hugg and Daisy Deeter Hugg. He attended school in Cory before leaving to serve in the U.S. Army. He served in both the Army and the Air Force for five years. He was stationed in the South Pacific during WW II.
He was a member of the Staunton Christian Church. He was a member and Past Master two times of the Centerpoint Masonic Lodge #597; at 32 Degree Mason, Scottish Rite Valley of Terre Haute, and American Legion Post #2.
As a young man, following the service, he worked at Allis Chalmers in Terre Haute. He later worked for Mace Petroleum and retired from Amax Coal Company. He also built several homes in Clay County, including log homes. He enjoyed living on the water, and watching the geese fly. He was well known as a good and kind man.
He is survived by his wife R. Delores Clark Hugg; their daughter Cheri Brink of Brazil; two grandsons, Richard Brink of New York, and Jason Brink of Brazil; one sister Betty Weddle and husband Tom of Brazil; several cousins, nieces and nephews.
His parents preceded him in death.
Services will be held Tuesday at 11:00am at French Funeral Home with Rev. Ernie Rush officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday from 4-8pm with Masonic Services at 7:00pm. American Legion Post #2 and VFW #1127 will provide military graveside services.
Paul A. Dickison
Paul A. Dickison, 28, of Brazil died Sunday, August 18, 2002, from injuries sustained in an accident in his home. He was employed with R&E Software design in Terre Haute as a computer technician. He was born February 6, 1974 in Brazil to Paul and Susan Bobbitt Dickison. Survivors include his wife, Amy Bell Dickison whom he married February 26, 1993; their children Ashlen and Paul Dickison; his parents; his brother Matt Dickison of New Albany; one sister Sarah Dickison of Brazil; grandmother Maudie Dickison; mother and father-in-law Sandy and Warren Bell; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mark and Rae Ann Howald, Jay Bell, Pat and Jayme Longo, Dan and Lisa Brand and a large extended family. He was a 1992 graduate of Northview High School and a 1998 graduate of Indiana State University with a degree in criminology. He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing and the outdoors.
Visitation will be Wednesday, August 21, 2002 from 4-8 pm at the funeral home
Services will be Thursday, August 22, 2002 at 1:00 pm at the funeral home
Burial will be in Summit Lawn Cemetery, Brazil.

Steven A. Rials
Steven Allan Rials, 45, of Brazil, died Sunday August 11, 2002 following an accident on Interstate 70. Born August 23, 1956 in East Lansing, Michigan he was the son of William and Elizabeth Carter Rials. He graduated from Hillsdale High School. He had attended Central Michigan University. On October 16, 1962 he married Lora Southwell.
In his career he worked as a young man as manager of McDonald's, Burger King, later in hotel and restaurant management. He was a franchise owner of Dominos pIzza in Kansas City, Missouri. Four years ago he began his career as a truck driver, and was currently working for Barnes & Ferguson Trucking in Harrisonville, Missouri. He had attained his pilots license and was a Corvette enthusiast.
Survivors include his wife, Lora; their children, Trevor, Ashley and Jordan Rials; his parents of Hillsdale, Michigan; mother-in-law, Ruby Southwell of Litchfield, Michigan; four brothers, Thomas Rials of Newburg, Oregon, Seth Rials and wife Ginny of Columbus, Ohio, Paul Rials and wife Jan of York, PA, and Mark Rials and wife Pat of Brooksville, Florida. He was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Donald Southwell.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 15, 2002 at 7:00 pm at the Eastside Christian Church with Pastor Bill Brock officiating.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, September 1, 2002 at 2:00 at the Hillsdale First United Methodist Church in Hillsdale, Michigan.

Robert C. Thomas
Robert C. Thomas, 81, of Brazil, died suddenly at his home August 19, 2002.
Born June 3, 1921 in Carbon he was the son of Emmanuel and Ellen Hunter Thomas. He graduated from Van Buren High School in 1939. He served in the Army from 1942-1945 in the South Pacific, and was awarded the Bronze Star. As a young man he worked locally at the clay factories, but then moved to South Bend area to work for Studebaker. He later worked as a chrome plater for Bendix, retiring in 1983. In 1986 he moved back to Brazil. He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 1009, the Eagles No. 291, both in Terre Haute, and the American Legion Post No. 2 and was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1127 both in Brazil.
Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Rob and Jan Thomas of South Bend; grandchildren, Chad, Megan and Sarah Thomas; dancing partner and dear friend, Lucille Burk of Terre Haute; sisters, Ruth Armstrong and husband Tom, Mary Margaret Pickett and husband Norval, and Norma Jean Morlan; several nieces, nephews and extended family members.
He was preceded in dealth by his parents; and brothers, Tom, Bill and Albert Thomas.
Funeral Services will be 1:00 pm Friday, August 23, 2002 at French Funeral Home with Rev. Bradley Harper officiating. Burial will be in Summit Lawn Cemetery, with graveside military rites provided by American Legion Post No. 2 and VFW No. 1127. Visitation will be 4-8 pm Thursday, August 22 with military walk through at 6:30 pm.
Gerald Eugene Guess
Gerald Eugene Guess, 72, of Brazil, died Friday, August 30, 2002 at the home of his daughter. He was born April 28, 1930 in Terre Haute the son of Otto and Sarah Iolean Guess. He served in the US Army as a Corporal from 1947 to 1953 receiving 3 bronze stars. He worked for Edgecomb Metals before retiring in 1993. On January 2, 1950 he married Joan Feuquay who preceded him hi death. He was also preceded in death by his parents and a special friend, Rosemary Grandey.
He was a member of the VFW #1147 and American Legion Post 2, Moose Lodge 180 and Eagles Lodge 274. He enjoyed fishing and NASCAR racing.
Survivors include one son Gary Guess and wife Tracie of Coatsville, IN; two daughters Sherry Shorer and husband Joe of Ladoga, IN, and Debbie Snyder and husband Mike of New Ross, IN; one brother Allen Guess; seven grandchildren, Amber Shorer, Joel Shorer, Jennifer Fretz, Matt Snyder, Bobby Snyder, Heathe rKnoll and Holly Still.
Graveside services will be 11:00 am Wednesday, September 4th in Floral Park Cemetery in Indianapolis with Brother Doug Parkey officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 3rd from 4-8 pm at French Funeral Home.
Nancy A. Pollom
Nancy A. Pollom, 55, of Brazil died September 1, 2002 at 4:30 pm at Putnam County Hospital from complications following cancer. She was born February 25, 1947 in Brazil the daughter of O.C. Stephenson and Betty Walters Stephenson. She graduated from Brazil High School and was completing a degree in Business at Indiana State University. On August 21, 1965 she married Mathew Pollom, he survives.
As a young woman she worked at Hardee's both in Brazil and Terre Haute as a manager. She worked in Sales for Western-Southern Insurance, and last worked at Columbia House in customer service, retiring in 1999 due to her health.
She was a member of Eastern Star in Kansas; member of the Brazil Concert Band for over 30 years; worked at Clay Youth Football League concession stand; enjoyed doing crafter, and working in her flower beds at home. She joined the Cancer Survivor Group at the Hope Center, and enjoyed working on several walks to raise money for Cancer Research.
She is survived by her husband Mathew Pollom of Brazil; their children, Delorus Lambert of Bell Union, IN, son-in-law Thomas Lambert of Eminence, IN, Charles "Chuck" Pollom and wife Stacy, and Mathew Pollom and wife Jenifer all of Terre Haute; 4 grandchildren, Misty Lambert, Katie Lambert, Kennedy Pollom, and Sloan Pollom and other extended family.
Services will be held Wednesday, September 4, 2002 at 7:00 pm at French Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Pollom officiating. Visitation will be from 5-7 pm. At her request cremation will take place with ashes being buried at a later date.

William R Downing
April 19,1950 - August 31, 2002
William R. Downing, 52, of Brazil died August 31, 2002 at his home. He was born April 19, 1950 in Brazil, the son of Robert and Louise Downing. He graduated from Brazil High School Class of 1968. On July 9, 1971 he married JoAnn Riddell, she survives. He was a truck driver and mechanic until 1983 when he had to retire due to health problems. He was an avid Nascar and Harley Davidson enthusiast.
He is survived by his wife JoAnn; three children, Brad Downing and wife Karen, Shane Downing and wife Cherish, and Kim Sutherlin and husband Brad; six grandchildren, Elizabeth, Kayla, Monica, Logan, Drake and Ethan; two brothers and two sisters, Bob Downing of Lafayette, Mike Downing, Marilyn Nees and Ginny Miller all of Brazil; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
At his request cremation will take place, with burial of ashes on Friday, September 6th at 11:00 am at Bee Ridge Cemetery. Pastor Bob Sampson will preside. Visitation will be Thursday, September 5th from 4-8 pm at the funeral home.

Phyllis I. Searcy
Phyllis I. Searcy, 66, of Brazil died September 2, 2002 at St. Vincent Clay Hospital. She was born March 20, 1936 in Terre Haute, the daughter of Oliver and Valara Malone Perrill. She graduated from Gerstmeyer High School, Class of 1954. On June 12, 1954 she married Norman Searcy he survives. She was a member of Eastern Star Knightsville Chapter #238. She enjoyed fishing and mushroom hunting. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She is survived by her husband Norman; three daughters, Debbie Searcy, Cheryl Brinson and husband David, Brenda Woods and husband Mike; one son Gary Searcy; six grandchildren, Jason Woods, Heather Woods, Justin Searcy, Matthew Searcy, Schuyler Brinson, and Danielle Brinson; one brother and sister-in-law, Dennis Perrill and wife Kay; several nieces and nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister Thelma Dickerson and a grandson Michael Jeremiah Woods.
Services will be Saturday, September 7, 2002 at 1:00 pm at French Funeral Home with Bob Kumpf officiating. Burial will follow at Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, September 6, 2002 from 4-8 pm and Saturday prior to the service.
Dr. Stanley E. Froderman
Stanley E. Froderman, M.D., 71, of Terre Haute, formerly of Brazil died September 12, 2002 at his residence. He was born April 24, 1931 in Wilmore, Kentucky the son of Carl and Jessie Stevens Froderman. He graduated from Hall High School in 1948 in Grays Knob, Kentucky and also attended Ashland Senior High. He attended Asbury College and Ashland Jr College. He served in the US Navy from 1950-1954. He was a radio operator on the ship. He came to the Wabash Valley and graduated from Indiana State University in 1957. He graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine in 1961, then went on to a four year surgical residency in Indianapolis.
On September 17, 1954 he married Lillyan "Tootsie" Turner. She preceded him in death March 4, 2001.
Dr. Froderman and Dr. Conrad established their medical office in Brazil starting in 1966 and retiring in 2000. He practiced general surgery and general medicine throughout those years.
He was a member of the World Gospel Church since its inception. The church was founded by his father. He was a member of the El Shaddai Emmaus Community.
Survivors include, two daughters and three sons, Vanessa Atkinson of Brazil, Lynda Tomhave and husband Dan of Calhoun, GA, Fred Froderman, DVM, and wife Trish of Brazil, Pastor Ted Froderman and wife Cheryl of Brazil, and Tim Froderman of Chicago; ten grandchildren, Rachael Purdy and husband Tim, Ben Atkinson, Abby Stevens and husband Shane, Katie Snurkowski and husband Matthew, Jessie Froderman, Cassy Froderman, Sadie Froderman, Bonnie Froderman, Beau Froderman, and Callie Froderman; two great-grandchildren, Kyndall Lillyan Stevens and Noah Daniel Snurkowski; one sister Doyne Clark and her husband Rev. Gene Clark of Findlay, OH and a large extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one sister and brother-in-law, June and Milton Bradley.
Services will be Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at 2:00 pm at the World Gospel Church, 900 Gardendale, Terre Haute, IN with Dr. William Coker officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 17, 2002 from 4-8 pm at French Funeral Home, 421 E. National Ave, Brazil. Burial will be in Roselawn Memorial Park located in Terre Haute, IN.

Howard N. Zentko
November 26,1923 - September 16, 2002
Howard N. Zentko, 78, of Carbon, died September 16, 2002 at 2:45 pm at his residence following a long battle with cancer. He was born November 26, 1923 in Parke County the some of Michael and Mabel Greenwalt Zentko.
He served in the US Navy from 1942 to 1945. He married Thelma Vanatti on August 4, 1945. He worked in the coal mines and later for Alcan, retiring in 1986. He attended Ebenezer Church and was a loyal Cub fan for 65 years. He loved watching his grandchildren and great-grandchildren in their sports activities. He was a devoted husband, father and grandpa.
Survivors include his wefe of 57 years Thelma; their daughters, Judy and Loren Horn, Donna and Larry Elwell of Brazil, Dala and Jeep Williams of Columbia, TN; seven grandchildren, Troy and Lori Horn, Shawn and Rachel Horn, Scott and Jamie Elwell, Jeremy Elwell, Shelly and William Roberts, Robbie and Amanda Williams, Lisa and TJ Ferguson; ten great-grandchildren, Bradley Horn, Trey Horn, Brooke Horn, Michael Elwell, Kinsey Elwell, Cassie Elwell, Maddie Roberts, Lydia Roberts, Preston Williams, Abigail Williams; one brother, John Zentko; three sisters, Mary Goodwin, Jean Tauber, Margaret Merrick.

Morris F. Wetnight
May 10,1923 - September 17,2002
Morris F. Wetnight, 79, of Brazil, died September 17, 2002 at 7:07 pm at Holly Hills Healthcare. He had been a patient for a short time. He was born May 10, 1923 in Clay County the son of Maurice Wetnight and Cordelia Bass Wetnight. He Served in the US Army from 1943 to 1945. He worked for Arketex for 25 years. He later drove a truck for Randall Oil and Reese Oil. He also worked at the Clay County Courthouse in maintenance.
On December 25, 1946 he married Beulah Shutlz, she survives.
He was an active member of the First Church of the Nazarene in Brazil since 1954, serving in many capacities. He helped to build the Brazil Nazarene Church and the Carbon Nazarene Church, and also helped with construction of the Community Missionary Church and the Forest Park Gazebo.
He enjoyed playing horseshoes and softball. He also enjoyed cooking for his friends and family. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah; their children and spouses, Rick and Sonya Wetnight, David and Onya Wetnight, Paul and Kim Wetnight, Pattie and Bruce Brim, Carol and Darrel Harrison; grandchildren, Chris, Brad, Justin, Jessica, Sara, Elizabeth, Christina and Kaleen Wetnight, Carlene and Jason Schwartz, Bobbi and Suzanne Brim, Jim and Maryellen Harrison, Tim and Marsha Harrison, Chad Peebles, Justin and Erin Smith and Jordan White; great-grandchildren, Evan Price, Jordan, Austin, Jacqueline Schwartz, Greg, Amanda, Chelsey, Olivia, Courtney, Sara and Savanna Harrison; one sister, Viola Summers and one brother Rev. Charles Wetnight; one sister-in-law, Doris Wetnight; several nieces and nephews and a large extended family.

Delores Josephine Batchelor
Delores J. Batchelor, 66, of Brazil died Sunday, September 29, 2002 at 7:16 am in Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was born January 25, 1936 in Lebanon, Indiana the daughter of Ernest Eugene and Kathryn Fern Cox Dodson.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother Raymond Dodson.
Survivors include; nine children, Kathleen Roberts, Donald Raines, Eddis Raines, Vickey Raines, John Smith, Della Kidd, George B. David J. Crowell
David Joseph Crowell, 55, of Brazil died at 8:00 am October 2, 2002 at Terre Haute Regional Hospital after a battle with cancer. He was born October 15, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York the son of James W. Crowell Jr. and Honore Canavan Crowell. He graduated from Fort Hamilton High School Class of 1964.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1968. On September 19, 1970 he married Judy Caccamo.
He moved to Brazil in 1985 and was the owner of Dave's T.V. and Fratello's Italian Hero Shop. He was currently employed at the Putnamville Correctional Facility as a cook. He was a member of Annunciation Church, American Legion and VFW.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife Judy; two daughters, Rita VanArsdale and husband Mike of Carbon and Amanda Crowell of Brazil; grandson, Logan David VanArsdale; two brothers, James W. Crowell III of New Jersey, Richard F. Crowell of Brazil; and a sister, Madeline Menzies of New Jersey.
Services will be held Saturday, October 5, 2002 at 11:00 am at Annunciation Catholic Church with Father Ken Ciano officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Terre Haute. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 pm Friday, October 4, 2002 at French Funeral Home.
