John David Sonnefield
John David Sonnefield, 49 of the Poland area died Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at his residence. He had been in failing health for several years and seriously ill for six months. He was born March 29, 1953 in Terre Haute the son of Roy Sonnefield Jr. and Mildred Davis Sonnefield.
He graduated from Brazil High School Class of 1971 and Vincennes University with an associate degree. He was engaged in farming, an occupation which he enjoyed for many years. He currently was employed at Oxford Automotive in Greencastle.
In August 1992 he married Bonita Dodge, who survives. He was a life long member of Zion United Church of Christ of Poland. A member of the John Deere Tractor Club, he enjoyed exhibiting and taking part in tractor driving competition.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1998.
Survivors include his wife Bonita Sonnefield; his mother Mildred Sonnefield; two brothers, James Sonnefield and wife Sue of Marion, Robert Sonnefield of Poland; a stepson Chris Sonnefield at home, two stepdaughters, Angie Withrow and husband Brian of Poland, Dianne Bettis and husband Tony of Illinois; stepgrandchildren, Kyle, Chelsea and Kayla Withrow of Poland, Angelina, Cameo and Tryston Bettis of Illinois; two nieces Amanda and Lauren Sonnefield of Marion and a large extended family.
A memorial service will be held at French Funeral Home on Monday, October 7, 2002 at 11:00 am with Pastor Adin Rodgers officiating. Visitation will be 2 hours prior to services. Burial will follow in Poland Chapel Cemetery.

Thelma I. Wallace
Thelma I. Wallace, 81, of Staunton, died October 6, 2002 at 11:35 am at Union Hospital. She was born April 23, 1921 in Posey Townshiop the daughter of Pearl and Rella Hardy Wallace. She worked as a legal secretary for the Thomas and Thomas Law Firm for 22 years. She was a member of the Brazil Business and Professional Womens Group, the Republican Club, the Historical Society and the Secretary Club.
She is survived by two sisters, Nellie Wools and Rose Elder both of Staunton; two nephes, Charles Wools and Herbert Wools; great nephew, Jeff Wools; great-nieces Mandy Locke and Molly Wools; great-great-niece and nephew Lindsay Wools and Alex Locke. She was preceded in death by her parents.
Funeral services will be held Friday, October 11, 2002 at 11:00 am at French Funeral Home with Rev. William Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Summit Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be one hour prior to services.
Ella Jane Iacinuo
Ella Jane Iacinuo, 63, of Brazil died October 9, 2002 at 5:39 am at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. She was born in Clay County on May 10, 1939 the daughter of Joseph and Esther Crague Mooney. She was a homemaker and mother. She enjoyed crocheting and needle work.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Frank B. Iacinuo, Jr. and a brother Thomas Mooney.
She is survived by her children, Frank Iacinuo and wife Teresa of Brazil, Cynthia Breneman and husband Jeff, Julia Parish and husband Ron all of Merriville, Kathy Morlan and husband Jim of Brazil and Frankie Brooks and husband Barry of Sherriville, IN; 10 grandchildren, Sydnee Iacinuo, Dominic Iacinuo, Kimberly Parish, Ronnie Parish, Samantha Breneman, Jennifer Babcock, Joshus Iancinuo, Barry Brooks, Christina Brooks, and Sara Jane Brooks; one sister Joan Millsop of Crown Point and one brother J.J. Mooney of Brazil.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday, October 12, 2002 at 10:00 am at Annunciation Church in Brazil with Father Joseph Kern officiating. Burail of ashes will take place following the mass at Diamond Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be Friday, October 11, 2002 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Lawson-Slack Funeral Home, 354 E National Ave, Brazil, IN 47834. Arrangements were handled by French Funeral Home.
Lloy June Gilliatt
Lloy June Gilliatt, 93, of Staunton, died October 13, 2002 at 6:30 am at Clay Health Center. She was born June 3, 1909 in Clay County the daughter of Luther and Nellie Mae Gregory Reynolds. Following high school, she went onto the Union Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1923. She married Thomas Lyle Gilliatt, he passed away in 1967. She worked for 33 years at the Clay County Hospital in obstetrics. She retired in 1980 and enjoyed traveling. She was a loyal Chicago Cubs fan. She was a past member of the RN Club of Clay County. She was one of the founding citizens of the Clay County Food Pantry. She also enjoyed caring for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and infant daughter Zo June Gilliatt, and a brother Forrest Gregory Reynolds.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jill and Richard Nussel of Staunton; two granddaughters, Sharri Jill Scamihorn and husband Kerry and Amy Lee Nussel all of Staunton; five great-grandchildren, Heather McGowan, Tessa Scamihorn, Olivia Scamihorn, Zebulon "Bub" Scamihorn and Jacob Nussel; one great-great-granddaughter, Jillyan McGowan.
Services will be Wednesday, October 16, 2002 at 1:00 pm at French Funeral Home with Rev. David Brown officiating. Burial will follow in Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 hours prior to services.
Thomas W. Price
Thomas Wolfe Price, 97, of Brazil, died October 24, 2002 at 5:00 am at the Plainfield Health Care Facility. He had been a resident there for a short time.
He was born January 14, 1905 in Cardonia the son of Henry and Dora Morgan Price. He was a graduate of Van Buren High School Class of 1924. His wife of 72 years Mable Cash Price passed away November 28, 1999. He was an accountant at Arketex for 44 years, retiring in 1971. He served on the Brazil City Council for 16 years.
He was a member of the Epworth Methodist Church since 1927. He was active in the church, singing in the choir and as a Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge #264 for over 50 years, the Scottish Rite Valley of Indianapolis, and the Shrine Lodge in Terre Haute. He was an active member of the Brazil Kiwanis, beginning in 1946. He was a boy scout leader for many years.
As a young man he enjoyed playing baseball, hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed playing Euchre.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Marilyn and Glenn Modesitt of Plainfield, 2 granddaughters, Lynn Roach and husband Dennis and Lisa Schuttler and husband Robert all of Plainfield; 7 great-grandchildren, Evan Roach, Jordan Roach, Ethan Roach, Sarah Schuttler, Micah Anne Schuttler, Jessica Sims and Thomas "Adam" Schuttler; one great-great-granddaughter, Samantha Leigh Sims all of Plainfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, their daughter Norma Jean Price who died in 1932, 4 sisters and 5 brothers, Margaret Moore, Elizabeth Denham, John Price, Will Price, Mae Loveall, Arthuretta Sheldon, Stanley Price, Harry Price and Chester Price.
Funeral Services will be Tuesday, October 29, 2002 at 11:00 am at French Funeral Home with Rev. Duane Caperton officiating. Burial will follow in Cottage Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, October 28, 2002 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home and Tuesday prior to services.

Kathryn G. Ripple
Kathryn G. Ripple, 86, of Brazil died October 27, 2002 at 3:51 am in the emergency room of St. Vincent Clay Hospital. She was born August 21, 1916 in Knightsville, the daughter of Elza and Minne DeBruler Lucas.
She graduated from Brazil High School Class of 1934. She attended Longs Beauty Academy and was a beautician in Staunton in 1940.
She married Sidney Roy Ripple October 24, 1936 he preceded her in death. Together they owned and operated Brazil Concrete. She enjoyed playing bridge, bowling and lawn work. She was a member of the Church of Christ located at Harrison and Blaine.
She is survived by her son a daughter-in-law, Samuel Roy Ripple and wife Rosei of Watseka, IL; and a daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn Butt and husband Duane of Brazil; 5 grandchildren, Tina Francis and husband Ron of Pittsburg, PA, Carrie McCain and husband Jim of Watseka, IL, Charles Ripple also of Watseka, And Ashley Smith and Austin Smith borth of Brazil; 2 great-grandchildren, Sammy and Katie Francis of Pittsburg; 3 step-grandchildren, Keith Butt, Kimberly Butt and Kyle Butt all of Brazil and several nieces and nephews.
She was preced in death by her parents, her husband, five sisters, Thelma Winters, Ruby Hoskins, Dorothy Knight, Christina Lucas, and Mary Nolte and one brother Melvin Lucas and a son-in-law, Robert G. Smith.
Funeral Services will be Thursday, October 31, 2002 at 2:00 pm with Rev. Walter Hunter officiating. Burial will follow in Summit Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday from 11:00 until the time of services at the funeral home.

Maxine Doan Butler
Maxine Doan Butler, 84, of Diamond died October 25, 2002 at 7:20 pm at Terre Haute Regional Hospital. She was born March 10, 1918 in Blanford the daughter of Herbert and Essie Milligan Doan. She owned and operated the Diamond grocery story for 25 years. She was a member of the Pocohontas Lodge, Geronamo Council #51, Ladies Auxillary VFW #1127 and the Annunciation Catholic Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 53 years William C. Butler; a brother, Herbert Doan; sisters, Wilma Thomas and Mary Doan; and her stop-mother Helena Doan.
Survivors include her son Gary Butler and wife Evanette of Brazil; granddaughter Lisa Wileman; great-grandchidren Leighla Wileman and Timothy Allen Wileman; sisters, Nancy Bumpus and husband James of Terre Haute, Jo Anne McDuffee of Aurora, IL; and brothers, William Doan of Terre Haute and Herbert Doan and wife Joann of Terre Haute.
Funeral Services will be Wednesday, October 30, 2002 at 9:00 am at Annunciation Catholic Church in Brazil. Burial will follow at Clear Run Cemetery in Bridgeton. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 29, 2002 from 4:00 to 8:00 pm at French Funeral Home, 421 E National Ave, Brazil.

Irene "Teenie" White

Irene "Teenie" White, 89 of Terre Haute, died October 25, 2002 at Bethesda Gardens. She was born January 11, 1913 in Vigo County the daughter of Virgil and Ruth Harvey Brown. She was a secretary in the Research Department at IMC, formerly Commercial Solvents. She was a lifelong member of the West Terre Haute Assembly of God Church. She was always active in the church and served as a Sunday School teacher for years.
Her husband Shannon White died in 1988.
Survivors include her stepsons, Shannon R. White of Elkhart and Richard E. White of Findlay, OH; one stepdaughter Pauline Dishon of Terre Haute; two brothers, Jim Brown and wife Betty of Paris, IL and Max T. Brown and wife Martha of Terre Haute; sisters-in-law, Alice Brown of Indianapolis, Roberta Brown of Phoenix, AZ, Shirley Brown of Terre Haute, JoAnn Brown also of Terre Haute; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded by her parents; her husband; one sister Eva Roberts; five brothers, Wayne Brown, Norman Brown, Clarence Brown, Robert Brown and Phillip Brown.
A celebration of her life will be held Sunday, November 3, 2002 at 2:00 pm at the First Assembly of God Church, 708 W. National Ave, West Terre Haute.
Anna Maxine Hoffman
July 22,1928 - November 1,2002
Anna Maxine Hoffman, 74, of Brazil died November 1, 2002 at 4:15 am at her residence following an extended illness. She was born July 22, 1928 in Brazil the daughtr of Everett and Lena McLaughlin Miller. She attended Brazil High School. June 15, 1947 she married Lowell M. Hoffman, he preceded her in death on December 17, 1996.
She was a member of the Epworth United Methodist Church. She was active in the Brazil OES #80, Daughter of the Nile Badoura Temple #23 and the Order of the Amaranth. She was a homemaker, seamstress, and a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lowell Hoffman, and a sister Arlene Hoffman in childhood.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, James and Debbie Hoffman of St. Louis and a daughter and son-in-law Claudia and Jeff Duncan of Jesup, GA; four grandchildren, Heather Stark and husband Randy, Stephanie Hoffman all of St. Louis, Jennifer Duncan and Jonathan Duncan of Jesup, GA; two sister-in-laws, Nina Cagle of Brazil and Doris Hoffman of Indianapolis.
Funeral Services will be Monday, November 4, 2002 at 11:00 am at French Funeral Home with Rev. Marshall Hendrix officiating. Burial will follow in Clearview Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, November 3, 2002 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home.

Oscar T. Black
November 29,1926 - November 9,2002
Oscar T. Black, 75, of Brazil died November 9, 2002 at 9:17 am in the emergency room of St. Vincent Clay Hospital. He was born November 29, 1926 in Coalmont, IN the son of Oscar T. and Naomi Ruth Crosby Black. He graduated from Coalmont High School. He served in the US Army during WW II. Upon his discharge from the Army, he began working as a tree-trimmer. He retired from working from Townsend Tree Service due to health problems.
He was a member of the Deliverence Temple Church in Brazil. He loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed playing board games and working puzzles with his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson Michael David Stinson.
He is survived by his wife Nancy Padgett Black, whom he married August 6, 1966. Six children and their spouses; Nancy Weinrich of Lafayette, Clifford and Cindy Anderson of Brazil, Bob and Viola Ellis of Brazil, Chris Traver and Richard Stapert of Patricksburg, Michael Black and Bill Davis of Clinton and Brian and Sheila Black of Brazil; 14 grandchildren, Jennifer Stinson, Robert Weinrich, David Anderson, Jeremy Anderson, Phillip Ellis, Nick Ellis, Thomas Traver and wife Brandy, Jamie Traver, Michael Traver, Jesse Stapert, Christopher Stapert, Jack Barnett, Timothy Barnett and Heather Barnett; 8 great-grandchildren, Seth Brown, Hannah Traver, Haley Traver, Tabitha Traver, Makayla Traver, Makalya Sue Barnett, Kassidy Barnett and Mersaides Barnett; 2 sisters, Katherine Rose Griffith and Judy Kay Black both of Jasonville.
