Monday, 9/4/2000 - 4 Elul 5760
Gerhard Herz, an internationally renowned Bach scholar who taught
at the University of Louisville for 40 years, died Sunday at Baptist
Hospital East. He was 88 and had been ill for several weeks.
Herz was inextricably bound up in the musical life of the university and
the city.
He was largely responsible for establishing the Chamber Music Society
of Louisville and personally responsible for bringing some of the
best-known classical artists to the city. His seminars at U of L attracted
a wide following, as did his music-appreciation sessions at public-library
branches.
Herz's early career reflected the turmoil of a world in crisis. A native
ofDusseldorf, Germany, and the son of a prominent Jewish judge,
he fled the Nazis in 1937. He arrived in New York with a Ph.D. from the
University of Zurich -- but without a job.
He carried, however, a powerful asset: a recommendation from Albert
Schweitzer, who was an authority on J.S. Bach as well as a famous
humanitarian. Herz soon made a connection with the U of L School
of Music and its dean, Dwight Anderson. By early 1938, Herz,
then 26, had gained an appointment to the music faculty.
"He created the music history department at U of L," William Mootz,
a former Courier-Journal critic who was one of Herz's students,
recalled yesterday. "Gerhard was this dynamo. . . . He didn't lecture --
he acted."
In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Anderson, Mayor Charles Farnsley
and the Louisville Orchestra's founding conductor, Robert Whitney,
redefined what was possible in the performing arts in Louisville.
In 1938, Herz and Emilie Strong Smith organized the Chamber Music
Society. He drew on personal contacts to engage such performers
as the Budapest String Quartet.
At U of L his classes and scholarship were gaining momentum,
and other schools were casting envious glances toward Louisville.
Herz spent a semester in 1945 guest-teaching at the Indiana University
School of Music in Bloomington, and IU was doing its best to make
his stay permanent.
Herz's brother Werner recalled: "Charlie Farnsley came over to our
apartment on Cherokee Road, sat down with Gerhard and said: 'You
must stay here -- we need you; we're beginning a great musical life in
Louisville. IU is not going to give that to you.' It went on for two hours."
Evidently persuaded, Herz remained at U of L until retiring in 1978.
Along the way he married Mary Jo Fink Herz, who taught French at
U of L from 1942 until 1979. She died in 1995; they had no children.
"His love for our school was strong," said Herbert Koerselman, the
current dean. "The School of Music is, I understand, the main
beneficiary of his estate, (supporting) a Bach scholar that would . . .
be in residence for a semester every three years or so."
Over the decades, Herz's scholarly investigations drew increasing
admiration in this country and elsewhere. He produced significant
editions of several Bach cantatas and other sacred choral works,
serving also as the first head of the American chapter of the Neue
Bach-gesell-schaft (New Bach Society). In 1984 he produced the
400-page "Bach Sources in America."
"He basically tracked down every scrap of paper that had anything to
do with Bach that existed in this country," said Melvin Dickinson,
director of the Louisville Bach Society and a colleague of Herz's at
U of L. One of those scraps was the only known original in the United
States of Bach's signature, which Herz himself owned.
Besides his brother Werner, Herz is survived by another brother,
John Herz of New York City; and by a sister, Lore Kingsley of Pacific
Palisades, Calif.
The funeral will be private.
There will be a public memorial concert at the U of L School of Music
at 4 p.m. Sept. 16, with performances by the Bach Society and other
artists.
Memorial gifts may go to the Chamber Music Society or the Louisville
Bach Society.
