Barbara C. Silverman, 42, the Kentucky horsewoman with
ovarian cancer whose quest for a place on the U.S. Olympic
Equestrian Team captured national attention, died at her home in
Louisville Wednesday night.
Until the last two weeks of her life, she continued to coach student
horse riders and occasionally rode herself.Don Vowels, who advised
and counseled her, was one of three friends with her when she died at
11:15 p.m.
"She finally was able to die peacefully," Vowels said.
Silverman was a nationally ranked rider in dressage, in which the rider
puts the horse through a series of precise, elegant moves. She
used her reputation and the publicity she generated to focus
attention on ovarian cancer so more women would know how to
lower the risk of getting it.
People magazine wrote about her drive to make the Olympic team
despite her cancer in February, and earlier she was featured on NBC's
"Today."
Many people were inspired by her gritty effort, and she continued
riding with the hope of making the team despite the cancer therapy
that weakened her and left her bald. She abandoned the effort in
March when it became clear she could nolonger compete.
"The biggest contribution that Barbara has made in the last year is
raising the level of awareness of ovarian cancer as a silent killer of
women," said Mary Phelps of DeLeon Spring, Fla., a member of the
International Alliance of Equestrian Photographers.Phelps, who has
known and photographed Silverman for about 20 years,
remembered her as a "powerful, strong rider" and one of the top
women in dressage in the country.
Silverman was first treated for ovarian cancer when she was 26. It
recurred three years ago, and again last year.Nina Bonnie, a friend
and patron who was part of a group of Kentuckians who bought
Silverman a top-flight horse so she could mount a concerted effort
to make the Olympic team, also was with her when she died.
"She showed her spunk and sense of humor up until the end,"
Bonnie said.
Survivors include her sister, Susan Rosen of Silver Spring, Maryland.;
a niece,Sarah Rosen; and a nephew, Jake Rosen.
Funeral services will be private.
Contributions may go to either the U.S. Equestrian Team,
Pottersville Road,Gladstone, N.J. 07934, or the Ovarian Cancer National
Alliance, 910 17th St. NW, Washington, D.C. 20006.
