Betty L. Michel
Betty L. Michel, age 67, of Canton, died Sunday in Aultman Hospital after an extended illness. She was a life resident of Canton and was a 1950 graduate of Lincoln High School. Betty was a member of St. Paul's Catholic Church in North Canton. Survived by her husband, Robert L. Michel; a daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Frank Gazzillo of Strongsville, OH; four sons and three daughters-in-law, Robert and Christi Michel of Berthoud, CO, William and Dr. Debra Michel of Phoenix, AZ, David Michel and Daniel and Heidi Michel, all of Canton; a sister, Donna Griffin of Canton; 11 grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents, Vincent and Florence Griffin; two brothers, Donald and Raymond Griffin; a sister, Patty Preusser. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Thursday at 10 a.m. in St. Paul's Catholic Church in North Canton with Fr. Joseph S. Rudjak as celebrant. Burial will be in North Canton Cemetery. Charles W. Dixon
Charles W. Dixon, age 68, of Massillon, passed away Sunday morning in Altercare of Navarre after an illness of three months. He was born in Alderson, WV, a son of the late Wiley and Hattie Hamrick Dixon, and had been a resident of the Canton-Massillon area about 35 years. He was retired from Buckeye Security, after 19 years service, where he was a security guard. Survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn and Clarence Dooley, of Rupert, WV, and Elisa and Mark Dowdle, of Canton; four sisters, Mrs. David (Geneva) Lyles, of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Mrs. Basil (Mildred) Martin, of Rainelle, WV, Mrs. Nathan (Vira) Beckham, of Harrisburg, AR, and Ardella Jane Brickhouse, of New Lexington, OH; four brothers, Walter Ray Dixon, of Derry, NH, Paul and Raymond Dixon, both of Chesapeake, VA, and Marcus Dixon, of Little Washington, NC; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Services will be conducted Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Formet-Clevenger Gordon Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Smith officiating. Interment in Evergreen Memorial Gardens. Charles W. Bumper Eubanks, age 86, died Monday, October 16, 2000 in the home after an extended illness. Born in Akron, July 13, 1914, he was a veteran of World War II serving with the 741st Tank Battalion. A retired employee of Hercules Engines after over 40 years of service. A member of A.A.R.P. and the U.A.W. Preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and four sisters. Survived by his wife, Mary Catherine Eubanks; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Richard and Diana Eubanks of North Canton and Randy Eubanks of Canton; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kim Hill of Canton, Susan and Larry Michel of North Canton; stepdaughter, Patricia Kennedy of Canton; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 1 p.m. in the Welch-Sekeres Lewis Funeral Home with Rev. Gerald Sommer M.S.C. officiating. Dorothy Dickes
Dorothy (Dottie) Dickes, age 76, of Canton, passed away Sunday evening at Mercy Medical Center after a brief illness. Mrs. Dickes was born in Uhrichsville, OH to the late George and Bernice (Jaberg) Wallace on February 9, 1924. She was a member of Trinity United Church of Christ, a graduate of McKinley High School, former member of the Eastern Star and one of the founder's of Southeast Asia Leave Project which was founded during the Vietnam War. She was also involved in the family restaurant business, Dick's Arcade Market. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Jack on January 1, 1987. She is survived by three sons and daughters-in-law, Kraig and Susan Dickes of Bay Village, OH, Scott and Rene Dickes of Hershey, PA, Kelly and Regina Dickes of Canton; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diana (Dee Dee) and Gene Hemminger of Bolivar, OH and Tracy and Tim Arbuckle of Canton; 14 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the Rossi Funeral Home with Pastor Darlene Garber officiating. Interment will be in Forest Hill Cemetery. Edward M. Heckaman
Edward M. Heckaman, 77, of Sherrodsville died Monday morning October 16, 2000 at Dover Union Hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack. He was born in Canton, April 1, 1923, son of the late Edward and Violet Suiter Heckaman. Ed was a member of the Dellroy Christ Community Church, Canton F A.M. Lodge #60, Carrollton V.F.W. and Canton Federation of Musician's. He was a WWII Army Veteran, former employee of the Timken Co. He owned and operated Edwards Music Co. at Canton until 1971. After moving to Dellroy he started Heckaman Carpet Cleaning which he operated until his retirement. He currently was a foster grandfather of Dellroy School. He is survived by his wife, the former Marjorie Jean Laughrey, to whom he was married on May 15, 1942; one son, Tim Heckaman of Canton, one grandson, Scott, and one great-grandson, Sam. Ed is preceded in death by a sister, Rosalie Boyle. Memorial Services will be held Sunday, October 22, 2000 at 2:00 p.m. in Christ Community Church at Dellroy with Rev's . Fred A. Rasnake
Fred A. Rasnake, age 65, of Canton, passed away Sunday, October 15, 2000 at Aultman Hospital from non-hodgkins lymphoma. Born December 13, 1934 in Drill, VA, to the late James and Laura Rasnake. He was a 1952 graduate of Honaker High School and an employee of Diebold, Inc. for 37 years. He was a member of Faith Fellowship Chapel and as the bass singer of The Messenger's Quartet, he sang for the glory of God for 25 years. He was a devoted Cleveland Indians fan and a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend. The lives of many people were enriched by having known him. He was preceded in death by a sister, Faye Ray and a brother, Ralph Rasnake, both of Honaker, VA; one grandchild; two great-grandchildren. Survived by his loving wife, Jackie (Hall) Rasnake with whom he celebrated 44 years of marriage; two daughters and sons-in-law, Pat and Chuck Keehn of Navarre, OH, Pam and Don Scott of Canton; one son and daughter-in-law, Pastor Allen and Karen Rasnake of Louisville, OH; nine grandchildren, Eddie, Shelly and James Keehn, Laura and Amy Rasnake, Kristen, Josh, Jenni and Kristopher Scott; three brothers, Earl and Mike Rasnake of Drill, VA and J.C. Jefferson Livingston, of Tilton, NH, died October 14, 2000. He was a retired Canton fireman prior to the move to New Hampshire. He was active in the Masonic Order, he was Most WorshipfulMaster of Lebenon Lodge #32 F AM and a member of Wm McKinley Lodge of Canton, past Soverign Prince of Arial Council of Jerusalem. Leona G. Fortune, 100, of Alliance, formerly of Carrollton, died Sunday, October 15, 2000 in Rose Lawn Care Center at Alliance after a lengthy illness. She was born April 3, 1900 in New Cumberland, OH, the daughter of the late Calvin and Ella Brown Scott. She was a resident of Alliance for 20 years and was a member of the Beechwood Christian Church at Alliance. On September 19, 1925, she married Glenn L. Fortune who died April 14, 1994. She is survived by two sons, Dean Fortune of Alliance and Keith Fortune of Eagle River, WI; and a grandson, Glenn Scott Fortune. She was preceded in death by two brothers and three sisters. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Allmon-Dugger Hively Funeral Home with Rev. John Hannum officiating. Burial will follow in Westview Cemetery. Born in Roseto Valfortore, Italy, on Dec. 3, 1919, he had lived the greater portion of his life in the Canton area. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army. He was a former employee of the Metropolitan Brick Co. and a retired employee of the Edmund-Wilson Co., retiring in 1981. He was preceded in death by his wife, Esther M. Shundry, who passed away Oct. 3, 1989 and a brother, Anthony Shundry. Susan D. Oberlin, age 34, passed on suddenly at Oregon, Ohio on October 6, 2000. Susan was a special person who spent her short life in group homes in the Toledo area. She was greatly loved by her friends and caretakers who will miss her special ways. Susan was preceded in death by her mother, Jo Ann Oberlin; and her grandfather, Bob Oberlin. Susan is survived be her father and stepmother, Jim and Carol Oberlin of Jackson Twp; her grandmothers, Lois Oberlin of Massillon; and Mary Zimmerman of Pittsburgh; her sister, Marcy Albrecht of Plain Twp; and her brother, David Oberlin of Perry Twp. Terry Evans Soles, age 54, of Minerva, died Sunday October 15, 2000 in his home following a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born December 8, 1945 in Alliance to the late Dale and May (Allen) Soles. He work for 24 years as a Hammerman at Alliance Drop Forge, and also he was the owner of Seven Soles Construction for ten years. He was a graduate of Alliance High School and Mansfield Business College in electronics. He was a veteran of the US Navy during the Vietnam War and was a member of Alliance First Christian Church. Survived by his wife, Denise Dee (Lockhart) Soles whom he married May 30, 1980; a daughter, Amy K. Soles of Canton; four sons, Dale W. Soles of Minerva, Mark A. Soles of East Canton, Troy E. Soles of Minerva, Tyler Soles of Minerva; a sister, Louellen Soles of Malvern; a brother, David Soles of Homeworth; four grandchildren, Ann Marie, Mitchel, Cade Soles, Tanya Rugani. Born in Canton on April 9, 1923, she was the daughter of the late, Charles and Zella Hulit. She was a 1941 graduate of McKinley High School and a retired employee for the City of Canton. She was a member of the Jackson Christian Church and besides her parents, was preceded in death by a son, Ronald Rex and two sisters, Betty Myers and Jane Summers. Walter M. White, Jr., age 73, of Canton, OH, passed away Saturday morning in Aultman Hospital following a brief illness. Born in Huntsville, AL, on March 25, 1927 he had lived the greater portion of his life in Canton and was a Veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. He was a former employee of Union Metal Mfg. and a retired custodian for Martin Luther Lutheran Church, where he retired from in 1992. He was a member of Martin Luther Lutheran Church, had helped with Stark County Hunger Task Force and was a member for 35 years in Alcoholic Anonymous. He was preceded in death by his parents, Sarah and Walter M. White, Sr.; and also two brothers, Calvin Eugene White and Jerry Carl White. Survivors include his wife, Jo White of the home, to whom he had been married for 48 years; his son and daughter-in-law, David and Terry White of Lowell, OR; two daughters and sons-in-law, Brenda J. and Randy Kirkbride of Canal Fulton, OH, and Kay Dawn and Bill Harris of Massillon; his sister and brother-in-law, Mary E. and Bob Rock of Leesburg, FL; and a brother, Larry White of Canton; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter and several nieces and nephews. Clarice Mae Thompson, age 90, of Waynesburg Rd., Carrollton, formerly of Hudson, died Monday afternoon Oct. 16, 2000 in Sunnyslope Retirement Center at Bowerston after an extended illness. She was born March 7, 1910, in Hudson, OH, daughter of the late Samuel Henry and Zella Maxam Post. Clarice was a member of the New Harrisburg Presbyterian Church and had been a 50 year member of the First Christian Church at Hudson before moving here in 1968. She was a 60-year member of the Darrowville Grange and was a member of Hudson Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star. She is survived by her husband, M. Arthur “Art” Thompson, to whom she was married on August 8, 1930; two sons and daughters-in-law, Kenneth and Carol Thompson of Live Oak, FL, George and Connie Thompson of Carrollton; one daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Fredrick Young of Butler, PA; nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; one brother, Allan Post of Florida. She was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister. Funeral Services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the New Harrisburg Presbyterian Church with Rev. Sarah Hodsden officiating. Glenn Wesley Vogelgesang, one of the city’s most prominent attorney’s, died on October 13 at the age of 88. He had won national recognition for a law career that spanned over half a century, including the highest awards given by the American Bar Association and the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was active in many activities in the Canton area, particularly with the Church of the Savior United Methodist. Mr. Vogelgesang was born in Lorain, Ohio on February 10, 1912. He was the son of Edith Weidler and Charles Wesley Vogelgesang. After living briefly in Lorain and Cleveland, they moved to Canton in 1915, where Mr. Vogelgesang became a life long resident. He graduated from Canton McKinley High School in 1929, where he was a member of the National Honor Society and the Varsity Debate Team. Miss Florence Willett, one of his teachers, became a special mentor who encouraged him in public speaking and his eventual legal career. In 1933, he graduated from the College of Wooster in Wooster, OH. A chemistry major, he was named to Phi Beta Kappa and won the most prestigious prizes in oratory. After attending one year at the Cornell University Law School, he transferred to the Law School at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and graduated with a Doctorate of Jurisprudence in 1936. Mr. Vogelgesang worked as an attorney for over 50 years, from 1936 to 1987. He was admitted to the Bar for Stark County, the State of Ohio, and the Supreme Court of the United States in 1936. Former Congressman Henderson Carson introduced him to the U. S. Supreme Court. He began his practice in 1936 with the law firm of Herbruck, Shetler and Roach in Canton and served as a member of the faculty for the McKinley Law School, 1936-41. In 1955, he founded the law firm of Vogelgesang, Howes, Lindamood and Brunn. He was elected the President of the Stark County Bar Association in 1956 and a member to the Executive Committee of the Stark County Bar Association. He was a member of the International Association of Insurance Counsel; the National Association of Railroad Trial Counsel, the Ohio Association of Civil Trial Attorney’s, and the Defense Research Institute. In addition, he was selected to become the Stark County Representative of the Board of Commissioners on Grievances and Discipline of the Supreme Court of Ohio. He served in that capacity from 1957 to 1965. He was Solicitor for the Village of Meyers Lake from 1953 to 1987. He entered semi-retirement from active practice in 1987. The highlight of Mr. Vogelgesang’s career came when two special honors were conferred in the late 1950’s. First, he was named a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in a special ceremony in Beverly Hills, California recognizing his achievements as among the highest in American jurisprudence. Membership in the Fellowship is limited to one per cent of the attorneys in any state of the United States. Second, he received the Award of Merit, the highest recognition accorded by the American Bar Association, in a ceremony in Dallas, Texas. In addition to his legal career, Mr. Vogelgesang engaged in a wide range of activities in the Canton Community. He was a life long member of the Church of the Savior United Methodist. He founded the Glenn W. Vogelgesang Family Church Trust to help promote educational and social programs in Canton. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees for the Church and taught Sunday School for many years. His other professional affiliations included membership in the Canton Chamber of Commerce, the Canton Club, the Board of Managers of the Central Branch of the Canton YMCA, Boy Scouts of America and the Wilderness Center. He was interested in politics throughout his life, serving several times as campaign manager for Republican candidates for public office. Beyond these professional and community achievements, many remember Mr. Vogelgesang most as a man who put his family first. He was a devoted husband to his first wife, Louise Forry of Newark, OH, whom he met at the College of Wooster and who died in 1984 after over 45 years of marriage. They have two surviving children, Ambassador Sandy Vogelgesang resides in Bethesda, Maryland with her husband Geoffrey Wolfe, and their two children, Christopher Glenn and Carolyn Louise Wolfe. Dr. Mark Wesley Vogelgesang lives in Hartville, Ohio with his wife, Susan Rood Vogelgesang and their two children, Christine Louise and James Wesley Vogelgesang. One son, Dwight Glenn, pre-deceased Glenn and Louise Vogelgesang in 1950. Mr. Vogelgesang married Betty J. Smith of Canton in 1987. They enjoyed over 12 years of marriage before her death on June 21 this year. His step-son, Mr. Richard Elder, resides in Richmond, Virginia. There will be a memorial service to celebrate the life of Glenn Vogelgesang at the Church of the Savior United Methodist at 11 a.m. Saturday, October 21, 2000 with Rev. Dr. Robert Buckley officiating. A private interment will be in North Lawn Cemetery. Nancy L. Agrusa, age 82, of Canton, passed away Tuesday, October 17, 2000, at Hanover House, after an extended illness. Paul L. Kiser, age 89, of Canton, died Saturday in Mercy Medical Center. Mr. Kiser was a member of Presbyterian Church of the Covenant and was retired from the Internal Revenue Service. John Earl Harvey, age 82, of Alliance, formerly of Hartville, passed away Monday October 16, 2000 in Alliance Community Hospital. He was born June 6, 1918 in Old Fort, NC to the late Robert H. and Cordelia (Early) Harvey. John came to Hartville in 1951 and retired from Teledyne Monarch Rubber Co. in 1980. After his retirement he worked an additional ten years at Edison Park Plaza and attended the Hartville Church of God. Mr. Harvey was a World War II Navy Veteran and was a member of the Alliance American Legion. Marie E. Dunning, age 93, of Canton, died Monday in Altercare. She grew up in Alliance, OH, moved to McDonaldsville after her marriage in 1941 and lived in Lake Cable for nearly 40 years. Robert R. Hilgert, age 48, of Louisville, passed away Monday, October 16, 2000 in Aultman Hospital following a recent illness. Born on November 4, 1951 in Canton. Bob was employed at Republic Engineered Steel as a track crewman for over 20 years. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved hunting and fishing. he was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church in Louisville. Bob leaves behind his mother, Janice (Styer) Hilgert of Louisville, many aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends. He is preceded in death by his father; Robert P.
