Frances K. Curran
SUFFOLK - Frances Kunz Curran, 91, passed away March 4, 2008. She was a native of Hankinson, N.D., and a registered nurse who served in the Navy during World War II.
Frances was predeceased by her husband, Charles William Curran. She is survived by her daughter, Pauline Spangler and her husband Robert of Kentucky and a sister, Pauline DeGivonni of Reno, Nev.

Caroline Mary Doyle
VIRGINIA BEACH - Caroline Mary Doyle, 85, passed away peacefully March 7, 2008.
A native of
Brooklyn N.Y.,
she was the
daughter of the
late William and
Caroline Friel.
She proudly
served in the WACs during World War II, and retired from N.Y. TEL after 25 years of service.
She is survived by her daughter Caroline and her husband James Penney; her two sons, Patrick Doyle and Edward Doyle Jr. and his wife Claudia; her four grandchildren, Julienne and her husband Lance Fallen, Melissa and her husband Alexandre Hebert, Edward Doyle III and Kyleigh Doyle; and her three great-grandchildren, Alexandre II and James Herbert and Ruth Fallen.
The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, Virginia Beach, Monday from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Albert G. Richard H. Woodling
PORTSMOUTH - Richard H. Woodling, 85, retired district forester for Southeast Virginia, died March 9, 2008.
Mr. Woodling was born in Logansport, Ind., the son of the late Elmer Woodling and Laura Woodling McIntyre. He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and was one of the few Marines to make amphibious combat landings at both Tarawa and Iwo Jima. After the war, he graduated from Purdue University with a degree in forest management. He became a resident of Portsmouth when he joined the Virginia Division of Forestry in 1949. He retired as district forester for Southeast Virginia after 35 years of service.
He was a member of BPO Elks Lodge 82 for more than 50 years, served twice as its Exalted Ruler and was named Elk of the Year in 1976. After retirement in 1984, the Woodlings resided in Cane Garden Bay, Tortola, British Virgin Islands and Topping in Middlesex County, Virginia, in addition to Portsmouth. He was a charter member of Green Acres Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Leona P. Woodling; daughter, Linnea W. Whitlow; son-in-law, the Honorable Morton V. Whitlow; and grandson, M.V. Whitlow Jr.
A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday in Green Acres Presbyterian Church. Burial will be private. John Barton Lamond
VIRGINIA BEACH - Lt. Col. John Barton Lamond died peacefully at home March 7, 2008. John was born in Philadelphia on Nov. 10, 1916. He was the son of late John Drybrugh Lamond and Elsie Endebroch Lamond. He married his beloved wife Paddy Lamond on Feb. 5, 1944.
John joined the Pennsylvania National Guard prior to World War II. He was a member of the US Army Corps of Engineers during the rest of his Army career. He served as the executive officer for the Engineering Staff - London during World War II and the post engineer for Walter Reed Medical Center from 1946 to1950 and from 1963 to 1966. He was awarded the Bronze Star for his outstanding service contributions. After retiring from the Army, John returned to school and obtained his B.A. from Old Dominion University. He then taught history and political science at Norfolk Academy. He attended Old Donation Episcopal Church and was a member of the Kiwanis and was a past President of the World Affairs Council.
He is survived by his children, David Lamond of Edinburgh, Scotland, Bruce Lamond of Fairfax, Va., and Heather Grieshaber of Littleton, Colo., and five grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Old Donation Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army. National Cremation Society is in charge.

Carl Ray Thompson
VIRGINIA BEACH - Carl Ray Thompson, 74, died March 8, 2008, surrounded by his family. He was born in Ragland, W.Va., Jan. 15, 1934. He served in the U.S. Navy for 10 years and then worked for Lockheed-Martin as a field engineer until his retirement in 2001.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, a past master of Lynnhaven Masonic Lodge No. 220, AF & AM, was a member the Sojourners Organization and Khedive Temple of the Shrine.
He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Lola Castor Thompson; three daughters, Cindy Thompson Dough and her husband Mark of Kitty Hawk, N.C., Susan Thompson Wyche of Hatteras, N.C., and Laura Thompson and her fiancé, Norman Harrell of Virginia Beach; a son, Carl Robert Thompson of Jersey City, N.J.; two sisters, Frances Crammer and Betty Wellman of Columbus, Ohio; a brother, Claude Varney of Fredericksburg, Va.; and two grandchildren, Holly Louise Wyche of Hatteras, N.C., and Lauren Katherine Crow and her father Lee Crow of Virginia Beach; and his Masonic family.
A celebration of his life with Masonic rites will be conducted in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, Wednesday at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Fr. Stan Sawyer. Elsie Barlow
CHESTERTON, Ind. - Elsie (Susa) Barlow, 93, of Chesterton, formerly of Weirton, W. Va., died March 5, 2008.
Born Sept. 24, 1914 in Manor, Pa., she was a daughter of the late Cecelia and John Susa; beloved wife of the late Louis Barlow who died Feb. 19, 1976; beloved mother of Loretta Wright and husband Jerry, Bertha “Dolly” Muscara and husband Sandy, Louis Barlow and wife Rachel, Regina Pashe and husband William and Lawrence Barlow and wife Shelly; cherished grandmother of nine; cherished great-grandmother of 20; also many nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends; sister of the late Rose Persin, Bertha Petrovic, John Susa and Albert Susa.
Elsie loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed playing pinnacle, playing endless games of bunco, baking her wonderful Slovenian pastries and traveling around the world. She was a longtime member of the Royal Neighbors of America in Chesterton, where she proudly served her community.

Louis L. Snidow
COROLLA - Louis Leigh Snidow died unexpectedly March 8, 2008, in his home in Corolla. He

C. Snidow Sr.
He graduated
from Thomas Jefferson High School in Richmond, Va., served in the U.S. Army and then went to work at American Tobacco Co. for 17 years in the traffic department. Louis went into business for himself in 1968, and owned and operated Mickleknox Dog Boarding Kennel in Rockville, Va., with his wife Carolyn, until his retirement at age 62. They moved to Corolla in January 2000 to make the beach their new home.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Bennett Snidow, who he married Aug. 26, 1962, with a daughter, Susan Hailey Hall, who he loved like his own; a grandson, Evan Leigh Hall; and son-in-law, Daniel E. Hall; a brother, Lyle C. Snidow Jr. and wife Greta; nieces, Karen Lazenby and husband Roland, Leslie McDearmon and husband John; nephew, Lyle C. Snidow III and wife Sondra.
At Louis’ request, there will be no service and according to his wishes, he will be cremated and his ashes will be scattered at a later date in Rockville, Va., and Corolla.
Anyone who knew Louis well, knows he had a passion for life and loved people, animals and above all, humor. Anything he got involved in, he gave it his all. We will miss him!

Carsie P. Edwards Jr.
WINDSOR - Carsie Pearlie Edwards Jr., 87, passed away March 10, 2008. C.P. was a native and lifelong resident of Isle of Wight County. He was the son of the late Carsie P. Sr. and Maggie T. Edwards. He was a member of Central Hill Baptist Church. C.P. was a devoted husband, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great-grandfather.
C.P. was an Army veteran of World War II and the 52nd Engineers Combat Battalion, Pacific Theatre, an honor of which he was very proud. He retired from NNSB, Dept. X-31, as an electrical supervisor, in 1975, after 27 years of service. C.P. was a member of the Central Hill Hunt Club. He was an avid traveler who visited every state in this country, except Louisiana and Alaska.
Preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, who he adored and longed to be with, Emily Jessie Edwards; two sisters, Mary Virginia Jones and Thelma Nurney; and four brothers, Frank Edwards, Pearlie Edwards, Clarence Edwards and Leverette Edwards.
C.P. leaves to cherish his memory his daughter, Sandra E. Little and her husband Lewis; son, Kenneth Glenn “Boots” Edwards and wife Brenda; grandchildren, Tracy L. Hassell, Missie L. Babb, Kenneth G. Edwards Jr. and Jesse Allen Edwards; great-grandchildren, Cory Little, Jalee Addison, Jamie Babb, Lindsey Babb, Gareth Edwards, and Aislinn Edwards; and one great-greatgrandchild, Kaden.
A graveside funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday in Mill Swamp Baptist Church Cemetery, Ivor, Va., with the Rev. Roger Johnson officiating. The family will receive friends in the home.

Jeremiah F. O’Neill Jr.
SMITHFIELD - Jeremiah Francis O’Neill Jr., 85, passed away March 8, 2008, at home in
Smithfield. He
was born Feb. 7,
1923, in
Saratoga
Springs, N.Y.
Mr. O’Neill was
a combat veteran of World War II, serving with the 104th Infantry Division (Timberwolves) in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was wounded in Germany, received the Purple Heart and was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry in action.
In 1949, Mr. O’Neill graduated from the Union College, Schenectady, N.Y., earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. His work career was exclusively in sales, and he retired in 1985 from Ericsson after 26 years of service. Upon retirement, he moved from Leawood, Kan., to Smithfield.
Over the years he was a member of the Rotary, Lions Club, and Junior Chamber of Commerce in Illinois, and the VFW Post 8545 in Smithfield. Mr. O’Neill volunteered in the Hardy Elementary reading program and at the Smithfield Library. He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, serving terms on the Administrative Board, Pastor/Parish Relations Committee, and also edited the church newsletter, The Trinity Beacon for two years.
Mr. O’Neill was preceded in death by his wife, Sally; brother, Donald J. O’Neill; and sister, Mary M. O’Neill. He was one of five children and is survived by siblings, Bernard J. O’Neill of Fly Creek, N.Y. and Claire Moore of Saratoga Springs, N.Y.; and three children, Sally Mauldin (Ed) of Reno, Nev., Cathy Couza (Mike) of Macomb, Ill. and Paul O’Neill (Phyllis) of Liberty, Mo.
Mr. O’Neill was an anatomical donor and his remains were donated to medical science.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at Trinity United Methodist Church with the Rev. Will Montgomery officiating.

CHESAPEAKE - A. Marie Broadhurst, 64, of the 400 block of Stalham Drive, was a loving angel who went home March 11, 2008.
Born in Coeburn, Va., she was the daughter of the late John and Ira Moore. Marie was predeceased by her husband, David F. Broadhurst; a daughter, Janet “Sam” Ramsey and a brother, John Moore Jr. Marie was a friend to many Tidewater charities.
A loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is survived by four sons, David Broadhurst and wife Teresa, Bill Broadhurst and wife Robin, Bobby Broadhurst and wife June and Dan Broadhurst and wife Tammy; a daughter, Linda Rose and husband Jason Moyer; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; two brothers, Alvin Moore and Davey Moore and a sister, Rosie Marrison.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Francis Gay Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 1146 Rodgers St., Chesapeake. The interment will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach.
The viewing will begin Friday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

William McKinney
NORFOLK - William Joseph McKinney, 86, of Willoughby Spit, passed away March 9, 2008.
He was born May 17, 1921, in Eastland, Texas. He was a vice president and salesman for Tidewater Supply Co. He joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942, became a naval aviator and ended his military career as a captain in 1952.
He is survived by a daughter, Nancy M. Luck and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by Ethel F. McKinney and Doris G. McKinney.

Mary Bell Hall Founds
PORTSMOUTH - Mary Bell Hall Founds, 72, of the 2800 block of Victory Blvd., passed away March 8, 2008 in her home.
A native of Coeburn, Va., she was the daughter of the late Norvale and Maggie Lee Hall. She was a waitress at the Full Boar Restaurant for 30 years. She was a member of Cradock Presbyterian Church.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 52 years, Keith H. Founds; three sons, Larry Founds, David Founds and wife Margaret and Gary Founds all of Portsmouth; a sister, Nancy Blankenship of Coeburn, Va.; and four grandchildren.

VIRGINIA BEACH - George Garland Smith Jr., 86, died March 9, 2008, at his home. He
was born in
Norfolk, Aug.
26, 1921, the son
of the late
George G. and
Dorothy S.
Smith. He
served his country proudly as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired as an industrial engineering technician from Norfolk Naval Shipyard after 35 years of faithful service. George was a member of the Atlantic Lodge No. 2 Masonic Lodge, Masonic Temple Member-Khedive Temple, a member of the Virginia Beach Shrine Club, and a first lieutenant of the Arab Patrol Marching Unit.
George was predeceased by his loving wife of 58 years, Jane P. Smith. He is survived by his two daughters, Dorothy A. Bradshaw and her husband Ric of West Palm Beach, Fla. and Linda S. Kane and her husband Mike of Hertford, N.C.; seven grandchildren; nine greatgrandchildren; and a sister, Dorothy J. Ripley and her husband Robert F. of Chesapeake.

Roy O. Matney
HAMPTON - Roy Otto Matney, 57, affectionately known as Otto by friends and family, departed this life on March 4, 2008, after a long struggle with posttraumatic stress (PTSD).
He was born in Grundy, Va., a son of the late Andrew and Florence Matney. He was 57 at the time of his death, had served in the United States Air Force, was a retired civil service employee and a member of the Foreign Wars Post No. 1400. He was preceded in death by two sisters, June Garner and Clara Blakely and one brother, A. C. Matney.
Survivors include two daughters, Patty and Jennifer and one son, Roy; as well as two sisters, Evelyn Holliday and Annie Wilson Fagan; and three brothers, Jennings, Eddie and Jimmy Matney.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and healthcare providers of the Veterans Hospital in Hampton for the care, aid and support over the years.
A memorial service will be held at the Albert G. Horton Jr., Memorial Veterans Cemetery at Hampton Roads, 5310 Milners Road, Suffolk, Friday at 1 p.m. Howard Fagan will be officiating.
