Alva W. Bryan
NORFOLK - Alva Williams Bryan, 90, of the 100 block of Westmont Ave., passed away July 29, 2007, in Lake Taylor Transitional Care Hospital.
A native of Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Samuel and Nancy Williams. She retired from the Norfolk Public School System as a secretary and was an active long-standing member of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church. She volunteered with Meals on Wheels for many years and enjoyed square dancing with the Tidewater Twirlers. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed needlepoint and loved doing things with her family.
She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Vincent D. Bryan; her son, Vincent D. “Dave” Bryan Jr. and wife Joanne of Virginia Beach; and two grandchildren, Paul Bryan and wife Andrea of Belleville, Mich., and Julie Bryan of Gloucester, Va.
A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery with the Rev. Bruce Carper officiating. The family will receive friends in the home of Joanne and Dave. NORFOLK - Oscar “Sonny” Walker of the 800 block of Goff St., died July 25, 2007, in his residence. A native of Norfolk, he was the widower of Mary Walker and a member of St. Steven Church of Christ on Maltby Avenue.

PORTSMOUTH - Cora L. James, 76, of the 3200 block of Gwin St., passed away July 28, 2007, in Norfolk. She was born April 12, 1931, in Scotland Neck, N.C. She was predeceased by a daughter, Marilyn James. She leaves to cherish her memory, three daughters, Gloria Creekmore (Emmett), Annette Cross (George) and Barbara Saulter (Willie); two sons, William James (Florence) and James E. James Jr.; two sisters; one brother; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; one greatgreat-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.

She owned the
Wiser Choice Cleaning Service, working for the Jewish community in Ghent and loved music, gardening and the outdoors.
Survivors include her mother, Maxine Parnell Wise; two daughters, Lee Ann Wise and companion Mike and Sara Nicole Wise Nelson and husband Erik; and one son, Erik David Nordhoff Monsen, all of Portsmouth; four sisters, Barbara Britton of Portsmouth, Brenda Bullock of Texas, Anne Rhodes of Newport News and Jeanette Best of Yorktown; one brother, John Wise of Newport News; a devoted friend, Mike Coleman and many other friends. She was “Me-Me,” a devoted grandmother to “Angel Bug” Dylan Wise, “Buddy” Logan Nelson and “Princess” Tessa Nelson.

CHESAPEAKE - Frances Alston Hunt, 74, of the 600 block of River Creek Road, died July 29, 2007. Born in Norfolk, she was the widow of Edward Lee Hunt Sr. Frances is survived by three daughters, Elva Hunt Stukes (David Sr.), Brenda Jones and Michelle Lamb (Keith); one stepdaughter, Pearl Oldham (John); sister, Annabell Davis; brother, John Alston Jr.; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; a god daughter, Velvet Jones; and a host of other relatives and friends. She was predeceased by a son, Edward Lee Hunt Jr. A funeral will be held at noon Friday in the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 1000 Holt St., Norfolk, by Father Ernest L. Helene V. Willis
CHESAPEAKE - Helene Vangol Willis, 90, quietly left us July 29, 2007, in the comfort of
her home after
a long illness.
Helen, as she
was known, was
born Dec. 10,
1916, in New
York City to
Anna Stiriz Vangol and Peter Vangol. After receiving her education in New York, she relocated to Norfolk where she worked at the Colonial Theatre, the Monticello Hotel and also Norfolk-Southern Railroad. She married Ralph E. Willis Jr. in 1946 in Norfolk, and they subsequently made homes in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Maryland. When her husband retired from the FBI, they returned to Virginia Beach and later settled in Chesapeake. Helen was a member of Great Bridge Presbyterian Church.
Helen was an accomplished artist specializing in portraits and still life oil paints. She was skilled in sewing, quilting, embroidery, knitting and crochet. She had a passion for gardening and could make anything grow, thrive and bloom. Helen lived independently until her illness at age 89. She enjoyed the seashore, reading biographies and murder mysteries, iced coffee (even in the winter), Hershey’s chocolate bars, TV, and listening to music. But above all, Helen devoted herself to her family. Her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were her first priority in life, always giving her unconditional love, care, nurturing and support throughout their lives. Their “Nana” was indeed a very special lady. Helen never spoke a negative word about anyone nor complained about any situation. She was always upbeat and positive, living by her motto, “tomorrow is a new day.”
Left to cherish her memory are her two daughters, Judith L. Mazzucchelli and her husband Richard of Leesburg, Va., and Jane W. Atkins and her husband Thomas of Virginia Beach; three grandchildren, Michael G. Mazzucchelli and his wife Jane of Takoma Park, Md., Troy E. Munday and his wife Jeanne of Chesapeake and D’Anna Lineberry of Chesapeake; and eight great-grandchildren, Tristhen Wear, Brian Lineberry Jr., Rayden Lineberry, Abigail Munday, Cole Munday, Allison Munday, Tess Mazzucchelli and Ryder Mazzucchelli. Helen was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Ralph E. Willis Jr.; and her great-granddaughter, Bri’Annajane Helene Lineberry.
A visitation for family and friends will be held Friday from 7 to 9 p.m. in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel, Cedar Road, Chesapeake. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Family and friends are invited to attend a luncheon following the service in the home of her grandson, Troy Munday, 608 Blackthorne Drive, Chesapeake. WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - Jeanette (Goodman) Mendelson, 89, formerly of Norfolk, widow of Abe Z. Mendelson, died July 31, 2007. Born in Portsmouth, she was the daughter of the late Louis M. and Rebecca (Brady) Goodman. She was a life member of Gomley Chesed Synagogue, Portsmouth.
She leaves a son, Dr. Louis M. Mendelson and his wife Marjorie of West Hartford; a son-in-law, Herbert Levin of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, David E. Mendelson of Washington, D.C., Andrew L. Mendelson of Nashville, Tenn., Dr. Ronald B. Levin and his wife Stephanie of Troy, Mich., Scott Levin and his wife Betty Ann of Norfolk and Rebecca Levin and her partner Kathy Duvall of Washington, D.C.; great-grandchildren, Elayna and Alex Levin and Emerson L. Yoriko Ishii Dreblow
NORFOLK - Yoriko Ishii Dreblow, 73, passed away Aug. 15, 2007, with her husband and son at her side.
She was a loving and caring wife, mother and grandmother. She always put her family first and made many special friends over the years. Yoriko was born in Kanagaua, Japan and raised in Yokosuka, Japan. She worked for the U.S. government as a dental hygienist before coming to the United States. She met her husband, Charles, in California and during his 26 years of naval service she was a proud and supportive Navy wife. She was active and always on the go, taking care of her family and visiting with friends until health problems forced her to slow down several years back. Yoriko will be greatly missed.
She is survived by her husband, Charles L. Dreblow; son, Royce A. Dreblow and his wife Felecia of Chesapeake; two granddaughters, Rachel Teruko Dreblow and Miranda Yoriko Dreblow. She was predeceased by her parents, three brothers and two sisters.

She was a member of Biltmore Baptist Church and a retired Tidewater real estate broker. She was a native of East Milton, Mass., and a daughter to the late J. Claud Frye and Ruth Frye Sorenson. She was predeceased by her husband, Coolidge Harrison; a daughter, Geri Williams Gray; and a son, Eddie Caviness.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Austin and husband Mike of Portsmouth and Kathy M. Gonzalez and husband Rick of Chesapeake; one son, Ben Miller of Fayetteville, N.C.; a sister, Ruth Harrison of Colerain, N.C.; two brothers, David Frye of England and Jessie Frye of Florida; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Evelyn Duncan Parrish
VIRGINIA BEACH - Evelyn Duncan Parrish was born in Macon, Ga., on May 13, 1919. She was an only child, a fact that would shape her life and friendships.
The family moved to New York, where she later met and married Charles Edward Parrish. Evelyn became a widow at a very young age and worked extremely hard to raise and support her two children, Lavitia and Charles. In 1991, she retired from the Archdiocese Children’s Home in Brooklyn, N.Y. She continued to do volunteer work for the next nine years.
Evelyn was devoted to and guided by God throughout her life. She had a zest for life, loved people and worked tirelessly, lending a helping hand whenever and wherever she could. There was nothing she would not do for family or friends.
In 2001, when she became ill and had to relocate to Virginia Beach with her son, it was her faith in God that kept her positive. Through the heartaches and pain, she leaned on Him and her spirits remained high.
On Thursday, Aug. 16, 2007, the Lord called one of his angels home. She was predeceased by her daughter, Lavitia Providence who was called home in March 2001.
Evelyn leaves to cherish her memory, a son, Charles Parrish (Sandra) of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Scott Parrish (Shana) of New Jersey, Marc Parrish of Atlanta, Stephen Providence (Judith) of Virginia and Andrea Robinson of New York; seven great-grandchildren, Wayne, Christina, Vincent, Stephanie, Terry, Joshua and Bryce; cousins, Rose Richards and Brenda Falus, both of New York, as well as friends she met along the way.

John Winston Siebert
VIRGINIA BEACH - Jack W. Siebert, 88, passed away peacefully Aug. 17, 2007, in his Sandbridge Beach home surrounded by his family. Born Jan. 29, 1919, in Norfolk, Jack enjoyed a wonderful life with his family and friends and was passionate about his work as a Realtor and his community involvements. In most cases, Jack’s winning personality usually resulted in him becoming president of whatever association he joined. Jack was a former member of the Talbot Park Baptist Church and the Blackwater Baptist Church. He was a devoted Sunday school teacher for many years and also served on the Board of Deacons.
Jack was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. After a career as a longshoreman for 26 years, Jack became a real estate broker in 1963. He co-founded Warren, Siebert, Page Realty in Norfolk in 1964 and was president/owner in 1966. In 1973, he established a branch office at Sandbridge Beach. He and his wife Jean ultimately established Siebert Realty in 1980. Throughout his real estate career, he received numerous awards that include twice being voted “Realtor of the Year” by the local Board of Realtor. He served as president of the Norfolk Board of Realtors, president of the Virginia Association of Realtors, and was vice president of the National Association of Realtors.
Jack was pleased to be the Past Grand Master (1961) of the Corinthian Lodge No. 266, Norfolk, as well as a member of the Scottish Rite and a Shriner. Additionally, Jack was a loyal member of the Norfolk Host Lions Club and the Virginia Beach Auxiliary Police. Jack was honored to serve twice as president of the American Cancer Society and was proud of his involvement with the Old Dominion University Intercollegiate Foundation Board. He received an honorary degree from Old Dominion in 2001.
Jack’s favorite pastimes were being with family and friends and cheering on the ODU Monarchs men’s basketball team. He loved “his” team and was a longtime, enthusiastic supporter. They will greatly miss their “head cheerleader.”
Jack was predeceased by his parents, Fredrick and Hattie Siebert and his siblings, Virginia Siebert Miller, Fred “B” Siebert and William Siebert. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Jean. He also leaves to cherish his memory his sons, John Keenan and his wife Deb of Kitty Hawk, N.C., James Keenan and his wife Jennifer of Virginia Beach and Patrick Keenan and his wife Lea of Virginia Beach; and his daughters, Susan Parsons and her husband Ronnie of Suffolk and Joanne Young and her husband James of Virginia Beach. He also leaves 12 grandchildren, Drew and Grant Keenan, Gregory, Sarah and Caroline Keenan, Jacob and Rachel Keenan, Patrick and Allison Young, Ginny Doughtie and Holly and Katie Parsons; three great-grandchildren, Jordan, Grayson and Aaron Doughtie. The Siebert Realty team was also a big part of Jack’s family, and they will miss him dearly. His light-hearted humor and passion for life were an inspiration to everyone.
A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today in the First Presbyterian Church, 300 36th St., Virginia Beach. Interment will be at the Eastern Shore Chapel Cemetery, 2020 Laskin Road, immediately following the service. To celebrate Jack’s life, friends are invited to join the family at the Princess Anne Country Club, 3800 Pacific Ave., Virginia Beach, at 4 p.m. or immediately following the interment. LONGWOOD, Fla. - Lessie Strickland Williams, 99, formerly of Chesapeake, passed away Friday, Aug. 17, 2007. She was a native of Wendell, N.C., and was predeceased by her husband, James C. Williams Sr. She was a member of West End United Methodist Church.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, is handling arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made in her name to the American Heart Association.
