Billie Lois Osborne

PORTSMOUTH - Billie Lois Osborne, 82, of Cypress Road passed away Aug. 29, 2007, in a local hospital. She was born Oct. 7, 1924, to the late Remy and Lucy Hibbard. Mrs. Osborne was a member of Grace Bible Church in Chesapeake. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Claude Allen Osborne Jr.

She is survived by her husband, Claude A. Osborne Sr.; a daughter, Cathy J. Jessee and husband Larry; two sons, Richard L. Osborne and wife Janet and Ronald R. Osborne and wife Diane; a sister, Hedy Couch; a brother, Walter Hibbard; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Michael Dillon. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will begin to receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

The family would like to thank Mrs. Osborne’s longtime caregiver, Ruth Underwood, for all her care and support.

Fannie Mae Sellers

PORTSMOUTH - Fannie Mae “Tumpy” Sellers, 63, of the 600 block of Lancier Drive, died Aug. 24, 2007, in her residence. A native of Portsmouth, she was a neighborhood mother and missionary and member of Community Outreach. The widow of Perry Sellers, she is survived by two daughters, Irish Caine (Gregory) and Diane Williams (Darnell), both of Portsmouth; two sons, Perry Sellers Jr. of Portsmouth and Autram Sellers of Virginia Beach; five sisters, Shirley Wright of Washington, D.C., Gloria Fields, Geraldine Christian and Thelma Shoatz, all of Philadelphia, and Aliminta Christian of Chesapeake; three brothers, Andrew Christian Jr. of Maryland, Henry Christian of Philadelphia and Donald Christian of Williamsburg, Va.; a special friend, Clarine Custom; five grandchildren; three godchildren; the Smith, Jones and Marshall families; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws, other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in New Mount Olivett Church by Pastor Milton Blount. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Viewing will be today from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. in Steele-Bullock Funeral Home, Portsmouth. Family and friends may assemble at 1100 Holiday St. for the procession to the church. Jack Helfant

VIRGINIA BEACH - Jack Helfant of 34th Street in Virginia Beach, beloved father, grandfather and friend died peacefully Aug. 28, 2007. Jack was born Jan. 5,
1921, in Brooklyn, N.Y., to

Anna and Joseph Helfant. He attended PS 66 and 214, Winthrop Junior High and Tilden High School. Jack served with the 18th Airborne Division during World War II and was a liberator of a women’s labor camp in Germany. Jack worked hard all his life as a window manufacturer, builder and manager of rental properties. He looked forward to work and never missed a day since beginning in his uncle’s deli 70 years ago. Jack will be remembered as an upbeat fellow who always had a smile and instantly made strangers into friends.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Henny Neuwirth; and his brother, Symour Helfant; and his wife, Shirley Dorothy Helfant. He is survived by his children, Sheila and Bob Josephberg, Joan Irvine and Bobby Dolsey, Robert and Robin Helfant and Rebecca and Randy Saunders. He will be missed greatly by his grandchildren, Tobin, Jaime, Jennifer, Holly, Casey, Jenny, Josh and Lisa.

He will be remembered always by his oldest friend and sister-in-law, Barbara Helfant and also by his extended family the Helfant-Fryes, Simmelinks and Neuwirths. A special love and thank you to his beloved friends in “the Friday night group.”

A chapel service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Laskin Road Chapel, by Rabbi Arthur Ruberg. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Online condolences may be sent to the family at www.hdoliver.com.

Jerome C. Barenti

ROCKLEDGE, Fla. - Jerome C. Barenti passed away Aug. 26, 2007, in Rockledge. The son of Abraham and Betty Barenti, Jerome was born in Mobile, Ala.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann (Sabbag) Barenti of Rockledge; sister, Margery Pizzuto of Brockton, Mass.; and son, Michael and daughter-in-law Juliet and grandchildren, Syringa and Jacob, all of Spokane, Wash.

A decorated Navy fighter pilot, Jerome flew numerous combat missions during the Vietnam War. After retiring from the Navy in 1977, Jerome lived with his family in Virginia Beach and started a second career as a software consultant. When he retired from that job, he relocated with Mary Ann to Rockledge, where he began substitute teaching for the Brevard County School District. He was also active in the Military Officers Association of America.

A funeral is scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., with military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Douglas M. Sanderlin Sr.

BRONX, N.Y. - Douglas M. Sanderlin Sr., 65, better known as Mac, of the 6500 block of Broadway, passed away Aug. 24, 2007.

He was born June 18, 1942, to the late Dewey and Inez Sanderlin in Norfolk. He was a butcher and a man of many words.

He leaves to cherish his memory five daughters, the Rev. Sharon Cheek of Woodbridge, Va., Kennetha Sanderlin and Kechia Braithwaite of Norfolk, Trudie Johnson and Brandy Wood of New York; one son, Douglas M. Sanderlin Jr. of Norfolk; three sisters, Ethel M. Reynolds of Norfolk, Lula M. Lewis and Georgie R. Gregory of Virginia Beach; one brother, Robert L. Sanderlin of New York; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in St. Thomas AME Zion Church, 1700 Melon St., Norfolk, VA 23523, Elder Donna Warren will officiate. Interment will follow in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Family and friends will assemble at the church one hour prior to the service. Linwood R. Butler Sr.

CHESAPEAKE - Linwood R. Butler Sr., 59, of the 1000 block of Sean Drive, died Aug. 31, 2007, in his home. A native of Chesapeake, he was employed as an assistant shop foreman with Gibson Equipment Co., Norfolk, for 32 years. He was a member of New Hope Baptist Church (St. Julian Creek), Chesapeake, and an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Elois F. Butler; daughter, Sherri L. Butler of Norfolk; son, Linwood R. Butler Jr. (Katrina) of Richmond, Va.; stepmother, Earlene Butler of Garysburg, N.C.; sister, Janice Summerhill (Jimmy) if Virginia Beach; two grandchildren, Christian and Christiana; sister-in-law, Glenda F. Everett (Alcus) of Columbia, S.C.; aunt and uncle, Willie E. Butler and Flossie Butler. He was predeceased by his parents, Daisy Butler and Walter P. Butler Sr.; and his brother, Walter P. Butler Jr.

A funeral will be conducted by Dr. Frank Guns Sr. at 11 a.m. Wednesday in New Hope Baptist Church (St. Julian Creek), Chesapeake. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Albert M. Steinmeier

CHESAPEAKE - Albert M. “Al” Steinmeier, 83, of the 4000 block of San Salvador Drive, passed away Aug. 31, 2007, in his residence. He was the son of the late William and Frances Steinmeier and a World War II veteran with the Army Air Corps. He was a devoted husband of 58 years, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Survivors include his wife, Eloise Steinmeier; one daughter, Suzanne Kennon of Cartersville, Va.; three grandchildren, Beverly Payne, Adam Boyette and Chip Boyette; and one great-grandchild, Luke Payne.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Olive Branch Cemetery by Dr. Ray O. Jones. The family will receive friends Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. The family would like to extend a special thanks to hospice and their staff. Janet R. Stewart

CHESAPEAKE - Janet Ruth Stewart, 75, of the 700 block of Gainsborough Court, passed away Aug. 31, 2007, in her home. A native of Roanoke, Va., she was the daughter of the late Frank I. and Anna Boyles Wolfe and wife of the late Linwood F. Stewart Sr. She was a homemaker and a member of Parkway Christian Center.

She is survived by four sons, Gary K. Drew and his wife Brenda of Norfolk, Tommy Drew and his wife Ann, Steve F. Stewart and his wife Sharon, all of Virginia Beach and David H. Stewart and his wife Dee of Washington, Pa.; the father of two of her sons, L. Fred Drew Jr.; a stepdaughter, Sandra Woods and her husband Rodney of Cove City, N.C.; a stepson, Linwood F. Stewart Jr. of Durham, N.C.; a nephew, Sam Wolfe; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Colonial Grove Memorial Park, 3445 Princess Anne Road, Virginia Beach, with the Rev. Ernest Trueblood officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, 1112 Kempsville Road, Chesapeake. Rufus H. Bell Jr.

NORFOLK - Rufus H. Bell Jr., 85, of 1243 Marshall Ave., went home to his Lord and Savior the morning of Aug. 29, 2007, from the Veterans Hospital in Hampton. He was a member of St. John’s AME Church, Bute St. Rufus was an independent paint contractor known as “Bell The Painter.”

He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife, Dorothy A. Smith Bell; a son, Rufus S. Bell (E. Marie) of Virginia Beach; daughter, Dorothy B. Evans (Charles) of Portsmouth; two grandchildren, Felicia B. Anderson (Quinton) of Chesapeake and Christopher J. Bell (C. Yvette) of Suffolk; his great-grandchildren, Quinton T. Anderson, Christal Y. Bell and Deonte’ Leonard; three sisters, Elizabeth Perkins, Louise Harris and Vernice Archer of Norfolk; one brother, Nehemiah Bell (Karen) of Newark, N.J.; one sister-in-law, Marie Bell and one brother-in-law, Marcel Wilson of Norfolk. His youngest daughter, Sandra Bell Thompson predeceased him May 13, 2007.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in St. John’s AME Church, Bute St., Norfolk, by the Rev. John D. Burton. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk. The family will be at Bell’s residence of 1243 Marshall Ave., Norfolk, VA 23504. Hale Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Carolyn F. Brown

NORFOLK - Carolyn Ann Ferebee Brown, 49, of Waco, Texas, departed this life Aug. 26, 2007.

A native of Norfolk, she was the beloved daughter of George Washington and Queen Elizabeth Ferebee and birth daughter of Marie Palmer, born April 3, 1958, in Norfolk. She was a loving and vibrant child who grew into a successful and strong loving mother and grandmother. Her pursuit for a higher education began at Norfolk State University from 1976-1980. While serving in the Chesapeake School district as a teacher’s assistant, to further her educational goals, she majored in physical therapy with a minor in kinesiology. After graduation from Norfolk State University, she pursued her career as a physical therapist at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Hampton. Her career path led her to the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Waco, Texas. After many years of hard work and dedication to her career, she retired from this field and fulfilled her duties as a grandmother.

Carolyn is survived by her daughter, Antonelle Tiffany Brown; a son, Antonio Brown Jr.; three brothers, James Q. Smith, Keith Hunter and Calvin E. Smith; three sisters, Denise Ebron Smith, Pamela Smith and Cynthia Foster; four grandchildren, Davonta Smith, Asia Smith, Datri Smith and Tyrell Mills; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the chapel of Metropolitan Funeral Service, 7246 Granby St. Interment will be at Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. Ruben T. Edmond

NORFOLK - Ruben Titus Edmond of the 800 block of B Ave., died Aug. 30, 2007, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born in Tillery, N.C., he worked for the City of Norfolk in health sanitation. He was a member of Second Calvary Baptist Church where he was a Sunday school teacher, head of the senior male usher board, and a member of the Pastor’s Aide, Calling Committee, Church Anniversary Committee and Pastor Council Committee. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include three daughters, Dorothy Smith of Illinois, Estelle Bussey of Chesapeake and Shirley Steward of Georgia; two sons, James Edmond (Jamie) of Norfolk and Ruben L. Edmond (Peggy) of Chesapeake; two sisters, Adell Davis of North Carolina and Cora E. Bridges of Virginia Beach; three brothers, Patrick Edmond of Norfolk, Lenburg Edmond of North Carolina and Perry Edmond of North Carolina; 14 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted by the Rev. Dr. Geoffrey Guns at noon Tuesday in Second Calvary Baptist Church. Burial will be in Woodlawn Memorial Park. The remains will be ready for viewing Monday from 3:30 to 8 p.m. in Carlos A. Howard Funeral Homes, Norfolk Chapel. The remains will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. The family will assemble at the residence at 11 a.m. for the procession.

Rosa Mae Jones-Parker

NORFOLK - Rosa Mae Jones-Parker of the 1300 block of Wall St., passed away in her residence Aug. 29, 2007. A native of Norfolk, she was a devoted member of the New Union Chapel AME Church in Norfolk.

She was predeceased by her mother and father, one sister, three brothers and one son.

She is survived by her husband, James Parker; her sons, Larry Scott, Reginald Scott (Renee), Charles Scott, James Scott (Marichell), William Scott, Derrick Burch, Donnell Burch and Paul Knight (Alena); one daughter, June Briggs; a special daughter, Aileen Rodgers; four sisters; four brothers; 17 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

A wake will be held in the chapel of Graves Funeral Home Monday from 7 to 8 p.m.

A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in New Union Chapel AME Church, 1200 St. Julian Ave., Norfolk. The Rev. Clifton R. Wilson will officiate. The family will receive friends at her residence and gather there one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Suffolk.

Tommy Ray Reid

NORFOLK - Tommy Ray Reid, 60, of the 800 block of Avenue B died Aug. 29, 2007, in his house. Mr. Reid was born in Norfolk. He was self-employed.

Survivors include his mother and father, Emma and William C. Reid Sr., of Norfolk; a son, Cassell Lacey of Norfolk; a daughter, Shadrian Reid of Northern Virginia; two brothers, William C. Reid Jr. (Dianne) of Norfolk and Reginald Reid of Virginia Beach; three sisters, Cynthia Reid and Corliss Hood, both of Norfolk and Pamela Brannon (Richard) of Suffolk; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and -nephews, aunts and uncles; a loving and devoted former wife, Louise Askew; a stepson, Tory Robertson; stepdaughters, Crystal and Cindy Robertson; and other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be conducted Wednesday at noon at Riddick Funeral Service Chapel, 1225 Norview Ave., Norfolk. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. A viewing will be held Tuesday from 2 to 8 p.m. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Thomas E. Sullivan Sr.

NORFOLK - Thomas Ernest Sullivan Sr., 82, passed away Aug. 31, 2007, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

He was self-employed in the fishing industry after retiring from the U.S. Navy with 20 years of service. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Lodge 4809 in Norfolk.

Mr. Sullivan was predeceased by his wife, Florence Williamson Sullivan and his son, Thomas E. Sullivan Jr.

Mr. Sullivan is survived by his two daughters, Theresa Renfroe and Corinne Mosher; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Altmeyer Funeral Home, 5792 Greenwich Road, Virginia Beach Chapel.
