APPALACHIA, Va. - Eliza H. Allen, 87, passed away Saturday (Sept. 7, 2002) at Ridgecrest Manor Nursing Home at Duffield, Va.
She was preceded in death by four brothers, Phillip, Roscoe, Boyd and Obe Allen; and one sister, Edith Duckworth.
Survivors include one son, James Vernon Allen and wife Joanne of Dandridge, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Rebecca, Jimmy and Derrick; and eight grandchildren; sister-in-law, Effie Allen, Appalachia, Va.; and special niece, Wanda LoBiondo; and special nephew, Clayton Allen.

DRYDEN, Va. - Ray C. Allen, 81, passed away at his residence Friday (Sept. 6, 2002).
A lifelong resident of Lee County, he was the son of the late Claude and Ellen Allen. He was a retired coal miner of 27 years and a member of the UMWA.
He was a member of the Admant Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by one son, David R. Allen; one brother; and four sisters.
Survivors include his wife, Flora Holman Allen, Dryden, Va.; four sons, Roger and wife Carolyn, Newport, R.I., Larry and wife Pamela, Dryden, Va., Danny and wife Jeanie, Jonesville, Va., Paul Dean Allen, Dryden, Va.; a special daughter-in-law, Phyllis J. JONESVILLE, Va. - Lydia Jane Surber Bonham, 81, of Flatwoods community, died Friday (Sept. 6, 2002) at Morristown Hamblen Hospital in Morristown, Tenn.
Born August 7, 1921 in Sneedville, she had been a resident of Lee County, Va., for about 52 years. She was a homemaker and attended Friendship Baptist Church in Jonesville.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Shelby Surber; second husband, Wiley Bonham; parents, Robert and Bobbie Seals Jones; sisters, Dora Greer, Argil Lawson and Lethia Jones; brothers, Mack, Andy and Will Jones.
Survivors include her sons, Ralph Surber and Johnny Surber, both of Morristown, and Jessee Surber of Jonesville; daughter, Jewell Prior of Morristown; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; brother, George Jones of Jonesville; half brother, Charlie Horton of Erwin; sisters, Martha Ely of Rutledge, Tenn., Mary Roark of Morristown, and Dorothy Evans of Chatsworth, Ga.

GRAY - Joyce Ann Bowser, 67, 576 Buckingham Road, went peacefully to be with the Lord Friday (Sept. 6, 2002) at her residence after a lengthy illness.
Joyce was born on January 29, 1935 in Scott County, Va. She moved with her family to Kingsport in 1950 and was a 1953 graduate of Lynn View High School.
She was of the Christian faith. She was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and a friend to all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Audley Babb; mother, Elva Naomi Hall Babb; infant brother, Leon; infant sister, Brenda; sister, Darlene Bruner; brother, Perry Babb; sister, Glenna Wheat; infant daughter, Alice Kate.
Surviving are her husband of 48 years, James D. (Donal) Bowser; two sons, Michael James and Duane Scott; one daughter, Donna Annette, all of Gray; two very special grandchildren, Andy Scott Bowser and Ashley Suzanne Bowser; three sisters, Ruth (Virgil) Arnold, Marlene (Morrison) Manis, Marcella (Raymond) Cavin, all of Kingsport; four brothers, Gary Kay Babb, Ira Jackson, Lucian Audley Babb and Sidney Phillip Babb, all of Kingsport; one very dear niece, Janice Deakins; and special friend, Margie Hale of Gray who have given great support to our family; several nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT - Patsy Ruth Chaffin answered the call of the Lord bidding her to come home on Saturday (Sept. 7, 2002) with her family by her side.
Born February 6, 1935, she was the daughter of Sam and Lorene Elkins Taylor, who preceded her in death, Lorene in 1979 and Sam in 1998. Her sister-in-law, Charlotte Taylor, also preceded her in death.
While attending John Sevier Junior High School, she met the love of her life, Lincoln Chaffin, whom she married on August 23, 1952. Their home was made complete by the births of their three wonderful children, Bobby, Andrea and Kristy. Patsy was a very loving and devoted wife and mother who lived her life for her family, and was known by the sweet smile she always shared with everyone around her.
In 1974, she gave her heart wholly to the Lord, repented, was baptized in Jesus' name, and was filled with the Holy Ghost as described in Acts, Chapter 2. She became an active and lifelong member of the First Apostolic Church of Morrison City, today known as Christian Life Center. She taught Sunday School, home Bible studies, sang in the choir and was a faithful servant of the Lord the rest of her life.
Survivors include her loving husband of 50 years, Lincoln R. Chaffin; son, Bobby and wife Virginia; daughters, Andrea Barrett and husband Paul, and Kristy Dorton and husband Mark. She is also survived by her two sisters, Phyllis Marshall and husband Roy, and Rosemary Vicars and husband Lowell; her brother, Benny Taylor, all of Kingsport, and her stepmother, Ruth Taylor, Clinchport, Va. She was also the proud grandmother of 13 grandchildren, as well as another grandson due in January 2003; and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two husbands, Alva J. Richmond and Robert B. Clay; one granddaughter, Beverly Lynn Cook; and a sister, Norma Jean Campbell.
Survivors include her daughters, Lynn Reilley of Mullens, W.Va., with whom she made her home, Kay Harris and husband Paul, Jonesville, Va.; and son, Gary Richmond, also of Mullens, W.Va.; one brother, Wayne T. King, Detroit, Mich.; one sister, Donna Cunningham, The Plains, Ohio; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

KINGSPORT - Diana Teague Hammitt, 43, of 4000 Lake Forest Drive, went to be with her Lord Friday (Sept. 6, 2002) in the Johnson City Medical Center.
Diana was born in Sullivan County on July 22, 1959, a daughter of the late Perry Lee Campbell, who passed away in 2000, and Eileen Gilley Campbell of Kingsport. Diana was a registered nurse and was employed by Indian Path Medical Center.
She was a member of the Liberty Church of the Brethren.
In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by a son in 1979; a brother, Terry Allen Campbell in 1968.
She was a wonderful and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend who brought joy to those who knew her. She was very creative and loved crafts and gardening. She will be sadly missed until we meet her in heaven where she is preparing a garden for everyone she loves.

Mr. Keith was a native of Clinchco, Va., who had lived most of his adult life after military service in Johnson City. He was a veteran of Vietnam, having served in the U.S. Army.
He was a retired computer engineer from the Pitney-Bowes Company.
He was a member of the Trinity Baptist Church and had served as a youth minister in the Baptist church.
He was preceded in death by four siblings.

After a long, courageous fight with cancer, Betty chose eternal life. She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Nancy Kate Byrd.

He served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday in Gardeners Cemetery, Hiltons. The family will meet at the funeral home at 9:45 a.m. to go to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be family and friends.
