NORTON, Va. - Billy Ray Ayers, 70, died Thursday (July 11, 2002) at his residence in Norton.
He retired from the U.S. Army with more than 20 years of service. He served during the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mavis Morgan Ayers.
Surviving are five children in Germany; four stepdaughters, Judy Mefford, Mulberry, Fla., Cat Smith, Donna Cooper, both of Winter Haven, Fla., and Lois DeWolf, Siler City, N.C.; one stepson, Jimmy Ball, Winter Haven, Fla.; one sister, Mary Tate, Richmond, Ind.
Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Hagy & Fawbush Funeral Home in Norton.
Services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Sunday in the funeral home chapel with Gary Smith officiating.
Burial will follow in the American Legion Cemetery, where military graveside rites will be conducted by Norton VFW Post 4301 and Wise DAV Chapter 56.

GATE CITY, Va. - Lucy Myrtle Carter, 79, went to be with the Lord Thursday evening (July 11, 2002) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after a brief illness.
She was born in Scott County and was a charter member of Community Fellowship Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and active on several church ministries. She was a former clerk at City Lock Shop.
She was preceded in death by her father, Willard Fields; mother, Belvia Hammond Fields; son, Doug Carter; brother, Jess Fields; and sister, Reatha Sams.
Surviving are daughter and son-in-law, Jan and Mark Jenkins, Gate City, Va.; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Etta Carter, Grayslake, Ill.; daughter-in-law, Nancy Carter, Mount Carmel; sisters, Gladys Turner, Kingsport, Ellen Shelton, Weber City, Va., Emma Williams, Church Hill; granddaughter and husband, Deanna and Mark Russell, Mount Carmel; stepgrandson, Jody Repass, Franklin, Ind.; several nieces and nephews.

Born in Leona Mines, Va., she had been a resident of Scott County, Va. most of her life. She was a homemaker, retired nurse and of the Pentecostal faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Burl and Virgie Hughes; five brothers, Wayne, Shorty, Jackie, Bobby and Bruce Hughes; first husband, Marlin Fisher and second husband, Wayne Fraley.
Surviving are her sons, Daniel Fisher and wife, Tressa of Rogersville and Gary Fisher of Rogersville; daughters, Suzy Bowen and husband, Lester of Pennington Gap, Va., Sandy Jones and husband, Jackie of Clinchport, Va.; six grandchildren; four brothers, Eugene Hughes of Morristown, Jimmy Hughes of East Lake, Ohio, Mike Hughes of Norton, Va., and Earl Hughes of Morristown; two sisters, Sissy Miller and Evelyn Lephew, both of Kingston, Ga.; and a loving friend, David Williams of Gate City, Va.

KINGSPORT - Berchie Alexander Gray, 84, went peacefully to be with her Lord at 3:15 a.m. Friday morning (July 12, 2002) at the home of her daughter and surrounded by her family.
Berchie was born in Greenup, Ky. on Aug. 6, 1917 and was the daughter of the late Samuel and Julia (Eggers) Alexander. She was married to the late W.S. (William) Gray.
She was a member of the Lynn Garden Baptist Church, a gifted seamstress, loved crafts and crochet/knitting.
The family would like to extend a very special thanks to Letha Mullins and Wellmont Hospice for all of their help and caring.
In addition to her husband and parents a daughter, Deborah Gray Kerns; brothers, Vernon, Frank and Grant Alexander preceded her in death.
