JONESVILLE, Va. - Miss Grace Davis, 99, passed away Wednesday (Sept. 4, 2002) at Johnston Memorial Hospital in Abingdon, Va.
She was born May 29, 1903 to Alexander Ewing Davis and Rose Sergent Davis.
She was a member of Russell Chapel United Methodist Church of Jonesville, Va. and the United Methodist Women. Miss Davis was a charter member of the Jonesville Women's Club and Jonesville Senior Citizens. She was a founding member of MEOC and served on the board of Mountain Empire Community College.
She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, American Cancer Society and AARP. She was featured as "Folk You Should Know" in the Bristol Herald Courier for all her volunteer work in the region. On many occasions, she had lobbied for rights of Senior Citizens in Richmond, Va. and was active in the Lee County Democratic Party. In 1989, Miss Grace received the "Governor's Award for Voluntary Excellence" in Richmond, Va.
Miss Grace was foremost an educator who helped many students get an education. She was educated in Lee County, Va. and attended Radford University and received her undergraduate degree from Peabody College and received a masters degree from University of Virginia Charlottesville, Va. Miss Grace taught school in Botetourt County, then in Lee County for over 50 years. After her retirement, she taught home bound students and Drivers Education to Senior Citizens.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Sheridan, Bill and John Davis; and one sister, Katherine D. Higginson.
Surviving are a sister, Eva D. Rush, Jonesville, Va.; one nephew, Jim Davis, Florida; two nieces, Peggy Lord, Towson, Md., and Rose Payne, Abingdon, Va.; three great-nieces and four great-nephews; nine great-great-nieces and nephews.

KINGSPORT - Houston Ivan Harrison, 47, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday (Sept. 4, 2002.) He has fought a courageous battle with cancer and won. He has gone home to be with his Father and now he is safe in the arms of Jesus.
He attended Daniel Boone High School and was a self-employed contractor. He loved farming and gardening and especially loved the outdoors.
Mr. Harrison attended Emmanuel Baptist Church.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend to all who knew him. He will be greatly missed by all.

EXETER, Va. - Lucille Pippin Peters, 87, joined her husband in eternal life and peace Thursday (Sept. 5, 2002) at Norton Community Hospital.
Born in Roebuck, Va., she was a 54-year resident of Exeter. She was the only daughter of Lula Boardwine Pippin and Drewy P. Pippin, who preceded her in death along with her husband of 66 years, Malcom E. Peters.
Her earlier years were spent working in the Bristol and Kingsport Silk Mills. After moving to Exeter she left her career to raise her family. She loved to cook for friends and family.
She was a Christian and a member of Walnut Creek Baptist Church.
Surviving are three sons, Ron Peters, Exeter, Va., Gerald Peters and Jim Peters, both of Big Stone Gap, Va.; one daughter, Reta Sargent, Appalachia, Va.; two brothers, Winford G.
