Graveside masonic rites for Hugh E. "Jack" Anderson, Stanley Valley Road, Church Hill, who went to be with his Lord Sunday morning (Aug. 18, 2002), will be conducted at 11 a.m. today in Church Hill Memory Gardens with Church Hill Clay Masonic Lodge #386 in charge.
Pallbearers will be Michael Anderson, Matthew Anderson, Dean Anderson, Tony Anderson, Jack Anderson, Dr. Kirk Brody, Jimmy Byington and Benny Francisco.

Florence Byerley, 87, Castlewood, Va.
CASTLEWOOD, Va. - Florence Byerley, 87, of the Grassy Creek community, died Tuesday (Aug. 20, 2002) in the Wellmont Hospice House in Bristol.
Born January 30, 1915, she was a daughter of the late Q.C.H. Byerley and Etta G. Salyer Byerley. She was a lifelong resident of Russell County and retired from the Russell County School System.
She was a member of the Grassy Creek Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two sisters and eight brothers.
Surviving are one brother, Champ Byerley, Castlewood; also several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Combs Funeral Service in Lebanon, Va., and at the home of Rufus Byerley at anytime.
Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Charlie Killen and the Rev. Hershall Ramey officiating.
The body will be taken to the Grassy Creek Church where friends may call from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the Grassy Creek Church Cemetery.
Nephews will serve as pallbearers.

Graveside services will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

HILTONS, Va. - Jackie Carter, 71, Route 1, entered into rest Monday afternoon (Aug. 19, 2002) at his residence.

Kathy A. Cookenour, 53, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Kathy A. Cookenour, 53, went to be with the Lord on Saturday (Aug. 17, 2002) at Bristol Hospice House in Bristol.
She was born in Kingsport.
Kathy was loved by all who knew her. She loved to serve her church and the Lord. She loved to read and she loved riding with her husband on their motorcycle.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Maude Alley.
Survivors include her husband, Otto, of the home; father, Raymond Alley; stepdaughter, Jennifer Lyons and her husband Jeff, Pittsburgh, Pa.; stepgrandchildren, Ellison and Lauren; sister, Sheila Blizard; brother, Phil Alley and his wife Belinda; and niece, Kayla.
A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday at Gravely Baptist Church, 500 Gravely Road, with the Rev. Johnnie Darnell and the Rev. David Salley officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Bristol Hospice House, 280 Steeles Road, Bristol, Tenn. 37620.

Tim Jackson, 43, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Tim Jackson, 43, of 228 Mt. Vernon Drive, passed away Monday morning (Aug. 19, 2002) at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center following a brief illness.
Born in Illinois, he had resided in Kingsport since 1980. Mr. Jackson graduated from Mt. Zion High School in Mt. Zion, Ill., and attended Eastern Kentucky University. He was employed by Southern Sales House of Music.
Tim was a professional musician playing the violin, keyboards, saxophone, flute and other instruments. At the time of his death, he was a member of the band, "Mirage.''
He attended Bethel Presbyterian Church.
Surviving are his loving wife of 23 years, Donna Spencer Jackson, Kingsport; parents, Loren and Faye Jackson, Decatur, Ill.; one brother and sister-in-law, Tony and Tawnya Jackson, Warrensburg, Ill.; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary and Eugene Spencer, Beattyville, Ky.; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Tammy and Gary Howell, Sharon and Earl Vires, Dan and Sue Spencer, all of Beattyville, Ky.; two nephews, Drake and Logan Jackson of Warrensburg, Ill.; two nieces, Gena Howell and Heather Stamper; and a nephew, Dustin Howell.
Calling hours are from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Bethel Presbyterian Church.
Services will be conducted at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the church with the Rev. Gary R. Bement and the Rev. Martin Stokes officiating.
Burial will follow in East Lawn Memorial Park.
Pallbearers will be Dan Spencer, Sam Manis, Marvin Thompson, Cliff Cox, Rick Holmes, Ken Bledsoe, Rick Skelton and Henry Lingard.

Ronnie Ledford, 61, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Ronnie Glenn Ledford, 61, departed this life on Monday afternoon (Aug. 19, 2002) at his residence after a lengthy illness.
Born in Russell County, Va., he was a son of the late Arthur and Agnes Ledford and was retired from American General Life Insurance Co. He was a former Reserve Deputy with the Sullivan County Sheriff's Department and was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Kingsport.
He was a wonderful loving husband, father and grandfather.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded by death by five brothers, John, Jeff, Charles, Buddy and Elmer Ledford; and a sister, Joann Ledford.
Surviving are his wife, Myrtle Blessing Ledford, of the home; a daughter, Doris and husband, David Lawson, Kingsport; a granddaughter, Tonya Lawson, Kingsport; a grandson, Casey Lawson, Kingsport; sisters, Jean Kindle, Kingsport, and Lucille Meade, Castlewood, Va., Pat and husband, Henry Wise, Lebanon, Va.; a brother, Ralph Ledford, Fontana, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Nettie Rutherford, Bluff City, Imogene Ledford, Kingsport, and Ruth Ledford, Columbia, S.C.; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Eugene and Shirley Harless.

ROCK HILL, S.C. - Services for Kenneth "KD" Lee, 86, formerly of Kingsport, who passed away Saturday (Aug. 17, 2002), will be conducted at 8 p.m. Saturday in the chapel of Hamlett-Dobson Funeral Home, downtown Kingsport, with The Rev. Tully Hunter officiating.

Raymond McConnell, 71, Big Stone Gap, Va.
BIG STONE GAP, Va. - Raymond Curtis McConnell, 71, died Monday (Aug. 19, 2002) at Lonesome Pine Hospital in Big Stone Gap.
A lifelong resident of Big Stone Gap, he was a former coal miner and employee of Buckles Supermarket. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict.
He was a member of Cornerstone Pentecostal Church in Norton, Va.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Gilmer B. and Nellie McConnell; and one brother, Garland McConnell.
Survivors include his wife, Agnes McConnell, of the home; sons, Mitch McConnell, Big Stone Gap, and Mike McConnell, Appalachia, Va.; granddaughter, Mindy Stover, of California; grandson, Tim McConnell, Appalachia, Va.; special grandson, Shaun Southard, Holiday, Fla.; stepdaughter, Mary Gail Southard, Holiday, Fla.; stepsons, Randy Nipper, Sarasota, Fla., and Donnie Nipper, New Port Richey, Fla.; stepgrandson, Tim Mullins, Big Stone Gap; stepgranddaughter, Tina Nipper, Sarasota, Fla.; stepgrandsons, Randy Nipper, Sarasota, Fla., and Anthony Nipper, of Rhode Island; great-granddaughter, Destiny Stover, of California; stepgreat-granddaughter, Tasha Mullins, Kingsport; brother, Carl McConnell, Maryville.

Ruby Gibson Mullins, 83, Lebanon, Va.
LEBANON, Va. - Ruby Gibson Mullins, 83, died Tuesday (Aug. 20, 2002) in the Russell County Medical Center.
Born February 20, 1919, a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland Gibson and Minnie Elizabeth Hess Gibson, she was the widow of Alex Mullins.
She was of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Arbutus Musick and Eva Payne; and two brothers, Worley Gibson and Trinkle Lee Gibson.
Survivors include three daughters, Shirley Klingbyle, Windsor, Ontario, Canada, Retha Reedy, Rochester Hills, Mich., and Sondra Mullins, Lebanon; one son and daughter-in-law, Roger and Dot Mullins, Belfast, Va.; seven grandchildren, Sherry Kelly, Linda White, Dawn Denryter, Anthony Reedy, Bruce Mullins, Kimberly Rasnake and Bobby Mullins; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Delores Edwards, Clintwood, Va.; also several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Combs Funeral Service in Lebanon, Va.
Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon, Va., with Mr. Roger Mullins officiating.

Joyce Richards, 63, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Joyce Marie Bolin Samples Richards, 63, of 1017 Reedy Place, went to be with her Lord on Monday (Aug. 19, 2002).
Joyce was a member of the Kingsport Salvation Army for over 25 years and taught Sunday School there for around 20 years. She was the young people's sergeant major for over 10 years. She was a member of the Ladies Home League for over 25 years and the League of Mercy for over 10 years. She was a Salvation Army bell ringer at Christmas time and also worked with the Angel Tree program. If it had to do with her church and her God, then she was very much involved in it.
She was preceded in death by her parents, O.D. Jennings and Lora Ellen Jennings; her first husband, Robert (Bob) Samples Sr.; and a son, Thomas (Tommy) Samples.
Survivors include her husband, T.W. (Jay) Richards of the home; three sons, Robert (Bob) Samples, Joseph (Joe) Samples and William (Billy) Samples and his fiancée Cherish Huff, all of Kingsport; grandchildren, Holly, Andrew, Danielle, Kourtnei, Joseph (Joe) Jr., Amber, Kevin and William Jr.; stepgrandchildren, Ursula Huff, Quindalyn Perry and Anthony Scott Huff; special friend, Sister Polly Chatman; stepdaughters, Jean Lockhart and Jane Fleenor; ex-daughters-in-law, Teresa (Tracy) Samples Bright, Carmeletta Samples, Regina Samples and Bobbie Samples Parson; brother-in-law, Joseph H. Samples Jr.; sister-in-law, Shelby Jean Samples; and several nephews.

Bobby E. Shaffer, 70, Piney Flats.
PINEY FLATS - Bobby Eugene Shaffer, 70, 940 Muddy Creek Road, went to be with the Lord Monday (Aug. 19, 2002) at the Hospice House in Bristol.
Bobby was born Oct. 13, 1932 in Washington County, Va., and was the son of the late Melvin and Birdie (Felty) Shaffer.
He was one of 12 children, an evangelist, attended Valley View Baptist Church and was a self-employed painter.
He was a kind, sincere and devoted man whose smiling face brought joy to those he touched. He was a very loving husband, father and grandfather.
Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Hazel Rhea Shaffer, of the home; daughter and son-in-law, Regina and Joe Chitwood of Blountville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robbie and Wilma Shaffer of Blountville and Randy and Agnes Shaffer of Piney Flats; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; five sisters, Mary Keesee, Helen Baker, Linda Feathers, June Poe and Jeanette Bright; six brothers, Frankie, Paul, Richard, Randall, Donnie and Bud Shaffer.

Donna Taylor, 66, Kingsport.
KINGSPORT - Donna Hurd Taylor, 66, 3116 Fairbanks St., passed away Monday (Aug. 19, 2002) at the Holston Valley Medical Center following an apparent heart attack.
Mrs. Taylor was a very loving, caring and kind mother, grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She will be sadly missed.
She was born in Hawkins County (Lewis Lane section) and was the daughter of the late Doyle and Janie Hurd. She was a graduate from Church Hill High School where she was a member of several clubs and the girls basketball team. She retired from Indian Path Hospital on April 1, 2000 with 20 years of service as Cardiac Monitor Technician.
She was a member of Bloomingdale Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Raymond Walter Taylor.
Surviving are one daughter and son-in-law, Patti Denise and Bob Davison of Piney Flats; a son, Randy Wayne Taylor, Spartanburg, S.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Richard William and Diane Taylor, Surgoinsville; five grandchildren, Samantha Davison, Jessica Taylor, Jennifer Taylor, Travis Taylor and Justin Taylor; brother and sister-in-law, Alvin York and Patricia Hurd, Church Hill; special friend, Jackie Carper, Morristown; and several cousins.

WISE, Va. - Mary E. Webb, 78, passed away Monday (Aug. 19, 2002) at Wellmont Lonesome Pine Hospital, Big Stone Gap, Va.
She was a retired LPN and former employee of Park Avenue Hospital, Norton, Va. She was a veteran of World War II, serving in the Woman's Army Corps.
She formerly attended the Missionary Baptist Church, Jenkins, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Webb.
Surviving are one son, Willie Charles Webb of Centreville, Md.; four daughters, Amber Willene Woods of Newport News, Va., Peggy Lou Hale of Wise, Va., Katheryn Melinda Nelson of Whittier, N.C., and Bonnie Marie Hampton of Appalachia, Va.; one brother, Harry Esmont of Michigan; two sisters, Polly Potter of Florida, and Joanne Nakula of Michigan; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.
Per Mrs. Webb's wishes, she was cremated and there will be no services.

Helen Viola Wolfe, Rogersville.
ROGERSVILLE - Services for Helen Viola Wolfe, 212 Persia Estate Rd., who died Monday (Aug. 19, 2002), will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Broome Funeral Home, Rogersville, with Elder John Arnott and the Rev. John McPheron officiating.
Calling hours will be from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home or anytime at the home of Geraldine and James West, 220 Old Persia Rd., Rogersville.
